Abijah Succeeds Rehoboam

11In the eighteenthH8083H6240 yearH8141 of KingH4428 JeroboamH3379, AbijahH29 becameH4427 kingH4427 overH5921 JudahH3063. 2He reignedH4427 in JerusalemH3389 for threeH7969 yearsH8141; and his mother’sH517 nameH8034 was 2MicaiahH4322 the daughterH1323 of UrielH222 of GibeahH1390.

3Now there was warH4421 betweenH996 AbijahH29 and JeroboamH3379. 3AbijahH29 beganH631 the battleH4421 with an armyH2428 of warriorsH1368H4421, fourH702 hundredH3967 thousandH505 chosenH977 menH376, while JeroboamH3379 drewH6186 upH6186 in battleH4421 formationH6186 againstH5973 him with eightH8083 hundredH3967 thousandH505 chosenH977 menH376 who were valiantH2428 warriorsH1368.

Civil War

4Then AbijahH29 stoodH6965 on MountH2022 4ZemaraimH6787, whichH834 is in the hillH2022 countryH2022 of EphraimH669, and saidH559, “ListenH8085 to me, JeroboamH3379 and allH3605 IsraelH3478: 5Do you not knowH3045 that 5the LordH3068 GodH430 of IsraelH3478 gaveH5414 the ruleH4467 overH5921 IsraelH3478 foreverH5769 to DavidH1732 6and his sonsH1121 by 7a covenantH1285 of saltH4417? 6Yet 8JeroboamH3379 the sonH1121 of NebatH5028, the servantH5650 of SolomonH8010 the sonH1121 of DavidH1732, roseH6965 upH6965 and rebelledH4775 againstH5921 his 9masterH113, 7and worthlessH7386 menH376 gatheredH6908 to him, wickedH1100 menH1121, who provedH553 tooH5921 strongH553 for RehoboamH7346, the sonH1121 of SolomonH8010, when 1011he was youngH5288 and timidH7390H3824 and could not holdH2388 his ownH2388 againstH6440 them.

8“So nowH6258 you intendH559 to assertH2388 yourselves againstH6440 the kingdomH4467 of the LordH3068 12throughH3027 the sonsH1121 of DavidH1732, 13being a greatH7227 multitudeH1995 and having with you 14the goldenH2091 calvesH5695 whichH834 JeroboamH3379 madeH6213 for you as godsH430. 915Have you not drivenH5080 outH5080 the priestsH3548 of the LordH3068, the sonsH1121 of AaronH175 and the LevitesH3881, and madeH6213 for yourselves priestsH3548 like the peoplesH5971 of other landsH776? WhoeverH3605 comesH935 16to consecrateH4390H3027 himselfH3027 with a bullH6499H1121H1241 and sevenH7651 ramsH352, even he may becomeH1961 a priestH3548 of things that are 17not godsH430. 10But as for us, the LordH3068 is our GodH430, and we have not abandonedH5800 Him; and the sonsH1121 of AaronH175 are ministeringH8334 to the LordH3068 as priestsH3548, and the LevitesH3881 18attend to their workH4399. 11EveryH1242 morningH1242 and eveningH6153 19they 20burnH6999 to the LordH3068 burntH5930 offeringsH5930 and fragrantH5561 incenseH7004, and 21the showbreadH3899H4635 is set on the cleanH2889 tableH7979, and the goldenH2091 lampstandH4501 with its lampsH5216 is ready to lightH1197 everyH6153 eveningH6153; for we performH8104 our dutyH4931 to the LordH3068 our GodH430, but you have abandonedH5800 Him. 12Now beholdH2009, GodH430 is with us at our headH7218, and 22His priestsH3548 with the signalH8643 trumpetsH2689 to soundH7321 theH7321 warH7321 cryH7321 againstH5921 you. SonsH1121 of IsraelH3478, do not fightH3898 againstH5973 the LordH3068 GodH430 of your fathersH1, for you will not succeedH6743.”

13But JeroboamH3379 23had setH5437 an ambushH3993 to comeH935 from behindH310, so that Israel was in frontH6440 of JudahH3063 and the ambushH3993 was behindH4480H310 them. 14When JudahH3063 turnedH6437 aroundH6437, beholdH2009, 24they were attackedH4421 both from frontH6440 and rearH268; so 25they criedH6817 outH6817 to the LordH3068, and the priestsH3548 blewH2690 the trumpetsH2689. 15Then the menH376 of JudahH3063 raisedH7321 aH7321 warH7321 cryH7321, and when the menH376 of JudahH3063 raisedH7321 theH7321 warH7321 cryH7321, GodH430 2627defeatedH5062 JeroboamH3379 and allH3605 IsraelH3478 beforeH6440 AbijahH29 and JudahH3063. 16When the sonsH1121 of IsraelH3478 fledH5127 from JudahH3063, 28GodH430 handedH5414H3027 them overH5414 to them. 17AbijahH29 and his peopleH5971 defeatedH5221 them with a greatH7227 slaughterH4347, so that fiveH2568 hundredH3967 thousandH505 chosenH977 menH376 of IsraelH3478 fellH5307 slainH2491. 18The sonsH1121 of IsraelH3478 were subduedH3665 at that timeH6256, and the sonsH1121 of JudahH3063 29conqueredH553 30becauseH3588 they trustedH8172 in the LordH3068, the GodH430 of their fathersH1. 19AbijahH29 pursuedH7291 JeroboamH3379 and capturedH3920 from him several citiesH5892, BethelH1008 with its villagesH1323, JeshanahH3466 with its villagesH1323, and 31EphronH6085 with its villagesH1323.

Death of Jeroboam

20JeroboamH3379 did not againH5750 recoverH6113 strengthH3581 in the daysH3117 of AbijahH29; and the 32LordH3068 struckH5062 him and 33he diedH4191.

21But AbijahH29 becameH2388 powerfulH2388, and he tookH5375 fourteenH702H6240 wivesH802 for himself, and fatheredH3205 twenty-twoH6242H8147 sonsH1121 and sixteenH8337H6240 daughtersH1323. 22Now the restH3499 of the actsH1697 of AbijahH29, and his waysH1870 and his wordsH1697 are writtenH3789 in 34the 35treatiseH4097 of 36IddoH5714 the prophetH5030.
