Sennacherib Invades Judah

1AfterH310 theseH428 1actsH1697 of faithfulnessH571 2SennacheribH5576 kingH4428 of AssyriaH804 cameH935 and invadedH935 JudahH3063 and besiegedH2583H5921 the fortifiedH1219 citiesH5892, and 3intendedH559 to breakH1234 into them for himself. 2Now when HezekiahH2396 sawH7200 that SennacheribH5576 had comeH935 and that 4he intendedH6440 to wage warH4421 against JerusalemH3389, 3he decidedH3289 with his officersH8269 and his warriorsH1368 to cutH5640 offH5640 the supply of waterH4325 from the springsH5871 whichH834 were outsideH4480H2351 the cityH5892, and they helpedH5826 him. 4So manyH7227 peopleH5971 assembledH6908 5and stoppedH5640 upH5640 allH3605 the springsH4599 and 6the streamH5158 which flowedH7857 7throughH8432 the regionH776, sayingH559, “WhyH4100 should the kingsH4428 of AssyriaH804 comeH935 and findH4672 abundantH7227 waterH4325?” 5And he resolutelyH2388 setH2388 toH2388 workH2388 and 8rebuiltH1129 allH3605 of the wallH2346 that had been brokenH6555 downH6555 and 9erectedH5927 towersH4026 on it, and built 10anotherH312 outsideH2351 wallH2346 and strengthenedH2388 the 1112MilloH4407 in the cityH5892 of DavidH1732, and madeH6213 weaponsH7973 and shieldsH4043 in greatH7230 numbersH7230. 6He appointedH5414 militaryH4421 officersH8269 overH5921 the peopleH5971 and gatheredH6908 them to him in the publicH7339 squareH7339 at the cityH5892 gateH8179, and 13spokeH1696 14encouraginglyH5921H3824 to them, sayingH559, 7“15Be strongH2388 and courageousH553, do not fearH3372 or be dismayedH2865 becauseH4480H6440 of the kingH4428 of AssyriaH804 nor becauseH4480H6440 of allH3605 the hordeH1995 that is with him; 16for the One with us is greaterH7227 thanH4480 the one with him. 8With him is only 17an armH2220 of fleshH1320, but 18with us is the LordH3068 our GodH430 to helpH5826 us and to fightH3898 our battlesH4421.” And the peopleH5971 reliedH5564 on the wordsH1697 of HezekiahH2396 kingH4428 of JudahH3063.

Sennacherib Undermines Hezekiah

9AfterH310 thisH2088 19SennacheribH5576 kingH4428 of AssyriaH804 sentH7971 his servantsH5650 to JerusalemH3389 while he was 20besiegingH5921 LachishH3923 with allH3605 his forcesH4475 with him, againstH5921 HezekiahH2396 kingH4428 of JudahH3063 and againstH5921 allH3605 of JudahH3063 whoH834 were in JerusalemH3389, sayingH559, 10“ThisH3541 isH3541 whatH3541 SennacheribH5576 kingH4428 of AssyriaH804 saysH559: ‘On whatH4100 are you trustingH982 that you are stayingH3427 in JerusalemH3389 under siegeH4692? 11Is HezekiahH2396 not misleadingH5496 you to giveH5414 yourselves overH5414 to dieH4191 by hungerH7458 and by thirstH6772, sayingH559, “The LordH3068 our GodH430 will saveH5337 us from the 21handH3709 of the kingH4428 of AssyriaH804”? 1222Is it not the sameH1931 HezekiahH2396 who removedH5493 His highH1116 placesH1116 and His altarsH4196, and saidH559 to JudahH3063 and 23JerusalemH3389, “You shall worshipH2331 beforeH6440 oneH259 altarH4196, and on it you shall 24burnH6999 incenseH6999”? 13Do you not knowH3045 whatH4100 I and my fathersH1 have doneH6213 to allH3605 the peoplesH5971 of the landsH776? 25WereH3201 the godsH430 of the nationsH1471 of those landsH776 atH3201 allH3201 ableH3201 to saveH5337 their landH776 from my handH3027? 1426WhoH4310 was there among allH3605 the godsH430 of thoseH428 nationsH1471 whichH834 my fathersH1 utterlyH2763 destroyedH2763 whoH834 couldH3201 saveH5337 his peopleH5971 from my handH3027, that your GodH430 would beH3201 ableH3201 to saveH5337 you from my handH3027? 15NowH6258 then, do not let HezekiahH2396 deceiveH5378 you or misleadH5496 you like thisH2088, and do not believeH539 him, for 27noH3808H3605 godH433 of anyH3605 nationH1471 or kingdomH4467 wasH3201 ableH3201 to saveH5337 his peopleH5971 from my handH3027 or from the handH3027 of my fathersH1. HowH637 muchH637H3588 lessH637 will your GodH430 saveH5337 you from my handH3027?’”

16His servantsH5650 spokeH1696 furtherH5750 againstH5921 the LordH3068 GodH430 and againstH5921 His servantH5650 HezekiahH2396. 17He also wroteH3789 lettersH5612 to insultH2778 the LordH3068 GodH430 of IsraelH3478, and to speakH559 againstH5921 Him, sayingH559, “28As the godsH430 of the nationsH1471 of the landsH776 29have not savedH5337 their peopleH5971 from my handH3027, soH3651 the GodH430 of HezekiahH2396 will not saveH5337 His peopleH5971 from my handH3027.” 1830They calledH7121 this outH7121 with a loudH1419 voiceH6963 in the languageH3066 ofH3066 JudahH3066 to the peopleH5971 of JerusalemH3389 whoH834 were on the wallH2346, to frightenH3372 and terrifyH926 them, soH4616 thatH4616 they might takeH3920 the cityH5892. 19They spokeH1696 31of the GodH430 of JerusalemH3389 as they did againstH5921 32the godsH430 of the peoplesH5971 of the earthH776, the workH4639 of humanH120 handsH3027.

Hezekiah’s Prayer Is Answered

20But KingH4428 HezekiahH2396 and IsaiahH3470 the prophetH5030, the sonH1121 of AmozH531, prayedH6419 aboutH5921 thisH2088 and calledH2199 outH2199 to heavenH8064 for helpH2199. 21And the LordH3068 sentH7971 an angelH4397 who destroyedH3582 everyH3605 warriorH1368, commanderH5057, and officerH8269 in the campH4264 of the kingH4428 of AssyriaH804. So he returnedH7725 33in shameH1322H6440 to his own landH776. And when he had enteredH935 the templeH1004 of his godH430, someH4480 of his ownH4578 sonsH3329H4578 killedH5307 him thereH8033 with the swordH2719. 22So the LordH3068 34savedH3467 HezekiahH2396 and the inhabitantsH3427 of JerusalemH3389 from the handH3027 of SennacheribH5576 the kingH4428 of AssyriaH804 and from the handH3027 of allH3605 others, and 35guidedH5095 them on everyH5439 sideH5439. 23And 36manyH7227 were bringingH935 giftsH4503 to the LordH3068 at JerusalemH3389 and valuableH4030 presentsH4030 to HezekiahH2396 kingH4428 of JudahH3063; so thereafterH4480H310H3651 37he roseH5375 in the sightH5869 of allH3605 nationsH1471.

2438In thoseH1992 daysH3117 HezekiahH2396 becameH2470 39mortallyH4191 illH2470; and he prayedH6419 to the LordH3068, and 40the Lord spokeH559 to him and gaveH5414 him a signH4159. 25But HezekiahH2396 did nothingH3808 inH7725 returnH7725 for the benefitH1576 41he receivedH5921, 42becauseH3588 his heartH3820 wasH1361 43proudH1361; 44therefore wrathH7110 cameH1961 upon him and upon JudahH3063 and JerusalemH3389. 26However, 45HezekiahH2396 46humbledH3665 the prideH1363 of his heartH3820, both he and the inhabitantsH3427 of JerusalemH3389, so that the wrathH7110 of the LordH3068 did not comeH935 on them in the daysH3117 of HezekiahH2396.

27Now HezekiahH2396 hadH1961 immenseH3966 richesH6239 and honorH3519; and he madeH6213 for himself treasuriesH214 for silverH3701, goldH2091, preciousH3368 stonesH68, spicesH1314, shieldsH4043, and allH3605 kinds of valuableH2532 articlesH3627, 28also storehousesH4543 for the produceH8393 of grainH1715, wineH8492, and oilH3323; stallsH723 for allH3605 kindsH929 ofH929 cattleH929, and 47sheepfoldsH723 for the flocksH5739. 29He madeH6213 citiesH5892 for himself and acquiredH4735 flocksH6629 and herdsH1241 in abundanceH7230, becauseH3588 48GodH430 had givenH5414 him veryH3966 greatH7227 49wealthH7399. 30It was HezekiahH2396 who 50stoppedH5640 the upperH5945 outletH4161 of the watersH4325 of 51GihonH1521 and directedH3474 them to the westH4628 sideH4628 of the cityH5892 of DavidH1732. And HezekiahH2396 wasH6743 successfulH6743 in everythingH3605 that he didH4639. 31EvenH3651 in the matter of 52the messengersH3917 of the rulersH8269 of BabylonH894, who were sentH7971 to him to inquireH1875 about 53the wonderH4159 that had happenedH1961 in the landH776; GodH430 leftH5800 him aloneH5800 only 54to testH5254 him, so that He might knowH3045 everythingH3605 that was in his heartH3824.

32Now the restH3499 of the actsH1697 of HezekiahH2396 and his deedsH2617 ofH2617 devotionH2617, beholdH2009, they are writtenH3789 in the visionH2377 of IsaiahH3470 the prophetH5030, the sonH1121 of AmozH531, in the BookH5612 of the KingsH4428 of JudahH3063 and IsraelH3478. 33So HezekiahH2396 55layH7901 downH7901 with his fathersH1, and they buriedH6912 him in the 56upperH4608 sectionH4608 of the tombsH6913 of the sonsH1121 of DavidH1732; and allH3605 JudahH3063 and the inhabitantsH3427 of JerusalemH3389 57honoredH3519 him at his deathH4194. And his sonH1121 ManassehH4519 becameH4427 kingH4427 inH8478 his placeH8478.
