Ahaz Succeeds Jotham in Judah
11AhazH271 was twentyH6242 yearsH8141 oldH1121 when he becameH4427 kingH4427, and he reignedH4427 in JerusalemH3389 for sixteenH8337H6240 yearsH8141. 2He did not doH6213 what was rightH3477 in the sightH5869 of the LordH3068 as his fatherH1 DavidH1732 had done. 23But he walkedH1980 in the waysH1870 of the kingsH4428 of IsraelH3478; he alsoH1571 4madeH6213 castH4541 metalH4541 imagesH4541 for the BaalsH1168. 3Furthermore, 5he burnedH6999 incenseH6999 in the ValleyH1516 of Ben-hinnomH1121H2011, and 6burnedH1197 his sonsH1121 in fireH784, 7according to the abominationsH8441 of the nationsH1471 whomH834 the LordH3068 had drivenH3423 outH3423 from the sonsH1121 of IsraelH3478. 4He sacrificedH2076 and 8burnedH6999 incenseH6999 on the highH1116 placesH1116, on the hillsH1389, and underH8478 everyH3605 greenH7488 treeH6086.
Judah Is Invaded
5Therefore 9the LordH3068 his GodH430 handedH5414H3027 him overH5414 to the kingH4428 of AramH758; and they 10defeatedH5221 him and carriedH7617 from him a greatH1419 number of captivesH7633, and broughtH935 them to DamascusH1834. And he was alsoH1571 handedH5414H3027 overH5414 to the kingH4428 of IsraelH3478, who struckH5221 him with heavyH1419 casualtiesH4347. 6For 11PekahH6492 the sonH1121 of RemaliahH7425 killedH2026 120,000H3967H6242H505 in JudahH3063 in oneH259 dayH3117, allH3605 valiantH2428 menH1121, because they had abandonedH5800 the LordH3068 GodH430 of their fathersH1. 7And ZichriH2147, a mightyH1368 manH1368 of EphraimH669, killedH2026 MaaseiahH4641 the king’sH4428 sonH1121, AzrikamH5840 the rulerH5057 of the houseH1004, and ElkanahH511 the secondH4932 to the kingH4428.
812The sonsH1121 of IsraelH3478 ledH7617 awayH7617 captiveH7617 twoH3967 hundredH3967 thousandH505 of 13their relativesH251, womenH802, sonsH1121, and daughtersH1323; and they alsoH1571 14tookH962 a greatH7227 dealH7227 of spoilsH7998 from them, and broughtH935 the spoilsH7998 to SamariaH8111. 9But a prophetH5030 of the LordH3068 was thereH8033, whose nameH8034 was OdedH5752; and 15he wentH3318 outH3318 to meetH6440 the armyH6635 which cameH935 to SamariaH8111 and saidH559 to them, “BeholdH2009, because the LordH3068, the GodH430 of your fathersH1, 16was angryH2534 with JudahH3063, He has handedH5414H3027 them overH5414 to you, and you have killedH2026 them in a rageH2197 17which has evenH5704 reachedH5060 heavenH8064. 10NowH6258 you are proposingH559 to 18subjugateH3533 the peopleH1121 of JudahH3063 and JerusalemH3389 as maleH5650 and femaleH8198 slavesH8198H5650 for yourselves. Are you not, howeverH7534 guiltyH5973H819 yourselvesH864 of offensesH819 against the LordH3068 your GodH430? 11NowH6258 then, listenH8085 to me and returnH7725 the captivesH7633 19whomH834 you capturedH7617 from your brothersH251, 20for the burningH2740 angerH639 of the LordH3068 is againstH5921 you.” 12Then someH376 of the leadingH7218 menH376 of the sonsH1121 of EphraimH669--AzariahH5838 the sonH1121 of JohananH3076, BerechiahH1296 the sonH1121 of MeshillemothH4919, JehizkiahH3169 the sonH1121 of ShallumH7967, and AmasaH6021 the sonH1121 of HadlaiH2311--roseH6965 upH6965 againstH5921 those who were comingH935 from the battleH6635, 13and saidH559 to them, “You must not bringH935 the captivesH7633 inH935 hereH2008, for you are proposingH559 to bring guiltH819 upon us before the LordH3068, addingH3254 to our sinsH2403 and our guiltH819; for our guiltH819 is greatH7227, and His burningH2740 angerH639 is againstH5921 IsraelH3478.” 14So the armedH2502 menH2502 leftH5800 the captivesH7633 and the spoilsH957 beforeH6440 the officersH8269 and allH3605 the assemblyH6951. 15Then 21the menH376 whoH834 were designatedH5344 by nameH8034 gotH6965 upH6965, tookH2388 the captivesH7633, and they clothedH3847 allH3605 their nakedH4636 peopleH4636 from the spoilsH7998; they gaveH3847 them clothesH3847 and sandalsH5274, fedH398 them and 22gaveH8248 them drinkH8248, anointedH5480 them with oil, ledH5095 allH3605 their feebleH3782 ones on donkeysH2543, and broughtH935 them to JerichoH3405, 23the cityH5892 of palmH8558 treesH8558, to their brothersH251; then they returnedH7725 to SamariaH8111.
Compromise with Assyria
1624At that timeH6256 KingH4428 AhazH271 sentH7971 word to the 25kingsH4428 of AssyriaH804 for helpH5826. 1726For the EdomitesH130 had comeH935 againH5750 and attackedH5221 JudahH3063, and ledH7617 awayH7617 captivesH7628. 1827The PhilistinesH6430 had also invadedH6584 the citiesH5892 of the 28lowlandH8219 and of the NegevH5045 of JudahH3063, and had takenH3920 Beth-shemeshH1053, AijalonH357, GederothH1450, and SocoH7755 with its villagesH1323, TimnahH8553 with its villagesH1323, and GimzoH1579 with its villagesH1323; and they had settledH3427 thereH8033. 19For the LordH3068 had humbledH3665 JudahH3063 becauseH5668 of AhazH271 kingH4428 of 29IsraelH3478, for he had broughtH6544 aboutH6544 a lackH6544 ofH6544 restraintH6544 in JudahH3063 and was veryH4604 unfaithfulH4604 to the LordH3068. 20So 30Tilgath-pilneserH8407 kingH4428 of AssyriaH804 cameH935 againstH5921 him and afflictedH6887 him insteadH3808 of strengtheningH2388 him. 2131AlthoughH3588 AhazH271 tookH2505 aH2505 portionH2505 outH2505 of the houseH1004 of the LordH3068 and out of the palaceH1004 of the kingH4428 and of the princesH8269, and gaveH5414 it to the kingH4428 of AssyriaH804, it did not helpH5833 him.
22Now during the timeH6256 of his distressH6887, thisH1931 sameH1931 KingH4428 AhazH271 32becameH4603 evenH3254 moreH3254 unfaithfulH4603 to the LordH3068. 2333For he sacrificedH2076 to the godsH430 of DamascusH1834 who had 34defeatedH5221 him, and saidH559, “35BecauseH3588 the godsH430 of the kingsH4428 of AramH758 helpedH5826 them, I will sacrificeH2076 to them so that they may helpH5826 me.” But they becameH1961 the 36downfallH3782 of him and allH3605 IsraelH3478. 24Moreover, when AhazH271 gatheredH622 together the utensilsH3627 of the houseH1004 of GodH430, he 37cutH7112 the utensilsH3627 of the houseH1004 of GodH430 inH7112 piecesH7112; and he 38closedH5462 the doorsH1817 of the houseH1004 of the LordH3068, and 39madeH6213 altarsH4196 for himself in everyH3605 cornerH6438 of JerusalemH3389. 25In everyH3605 cityH5892 of JudahH3063 he madeH6213 highH1116 placesH1116 to burnH6999 incenseH6999 to otherH312 godsH430, and provokedH3707 the LordH3068, the GodH430 of his fathersH1, toH3707 angerH3707. 2640Now the restH3499 of his actsH1697 and allH3605 his waysH1870, from the firstH7223 to the lastH314, beholdH2009, they are writtenH3789 in the BookH5612 of the KingsH4428 of JudahH3063 and IsraelH3478. 2741So AhazH271 42layH7901 downH7901 with his fathersH1, and they buriedH6912 him in the cityH5892, in JerusalemH3389, for they did not bringH935 him to the tombsH6913 of the kingsH4428 of 43IsraelH3478; and his sonH1121 HezekiahH2396 reignedH4427 inH8478 his placeH8478.
