2 Chronicles 24

New American Standard Bible 2020

Young Joash Influenced by Jehoiada

11JoashH3060 was sevenH7651 yearsH8141 oldH1121 when he becameH4427 kingH4427, and he reignedH4427 for fortyH705 yearsH8141 in JerusalemH3389; and his mother’sH517 nameH8034 was ZibiahH6645 from BeershebaH884. 22JoashH3060 didH6213 what was rightH3477 in the sightH5869 of the LordH3068 allH3605 the daysH3117 of JehoiadaH3077 the priestH3548. 3JehoiadaH3077 tookH5375 twoH8147 wivesH802 for him, and he fatheredH3205 sonsH1121 and daughtersH1323.

Faithless Priests

4Now it cameH1961 aboutH1961 afterH310 thisH3651 that JoashH3060 3decidedH1961H5973H3820 4to restoreH2318 the houseH1004 of the LordH3068. 5He gatheredH6908 the priestsH3548 and LevitesH3881 and saidH559 to them, “GoH3318 outH3318 to the citiesH5892 of JudahH3063 and collectH6908 moneyH3701 from allH3605 5IsraelH3478 to 6repairH2388 the houseH1004 of your GodH430 annuallyH1767H8141, and you shall 7doH4116 the workH1697 quicklyH4116.” But the LevitesH3881 did not actH4116 quicklyH4116. 6So the kingH4428 summonedH7121 JehoiadaH3077, the chiefH7218 priest, and saidH559 to him, “WhyH4069 have you not requiredH1875 the LevitesH3881 to bringH935 inH935 from JudahH3063 and from JerusalemH3389 8the 9contributionH4864 of MosesH4872, the servantH5650 of the LordH3068, and the congregationH6951 of IsraelH3478, 10for the tentH168 of the testimonyH5715?” 7For 11the sonsH1121 of the wickedH4849 AthaliahH6271 had brokenH6555 intoH6555 the houseH1004 of GodH430, and evenH1571 12usedH6213 the holyH6944 thingsH6944 of the houseH1004 of the LordH3068 for the BaalsH1168.

Temple Repaired

8So the kingH4428 commandedH559, and 13they madeH6213 a chestH727 and setH5414 it outsideH2351 by the gateH8179 of the houseH1004 of the LordH3068. 914And they madeH5414 a proclamationH6963 in JudahH3063 and JerusalemH3389 to bringH935 to the LordH3068 15the 16contributionH4864 commanded by MosesH4872 the servantH5650 of GodH430 on IsraelH3478 in the wildernessH4057. 10AllH3605 the officersH8269 and allH3605 the peopleH5971 rejoicedH8055, and they broughtH935 inH935 their contribution and 17droppedH7993 it into the chestH727 untilH5704 they had finishedH3615. 11It happenedH1961 that wheneverH6256 the chestH727 was broughtH935 to the king’sH4428 officerH6496 by the LevitesH3881, and 18they sawH7200 that the moneyH3701 was substantialH7227, the king’sH4428 scribeH5613 and the chiefH7218 priest’sH3548 officerH6496 would comeH935 and emptyH6168 the chestH727, and pickH5375 it upH5375 and returnH7725 it to its placeH4725. They didH6213 thisH3541 dailyH3117 and collectedH622 a largeH7230 amountH7230 of moneyH3701. 12The kingH4428 and JehoiadaH3077 gaveH5414 it to those who didH6213 the workH4399 of the serviceH5656 of the houseH1004 of the LordH3068; and they hiredH7936 masonsH2672 and carpentersH2796 to restoreH2318 the houseH1004 of the LordH3068, and alsoH1571 workersH2796 in ironH1270 and bronzeH5178 to repairH2388 the houseH1004 of the LordH3068. 13So the workmenH4399H6213 laboredH6213, and the repairH724 workH4399 progressedH5927 in their handsH3027, and they 19restoredH5975 the houseH1004 of GodH430 accordingH5921 to its 20specificationsH4971 and strengthenedH553 it. 14When they had finishedH3615, they broughtH935 the restH7605 of the moneyH3701 beforeH6440 the kingH4428 and JehoiadaH3077; and it was madeH6213 into utensilsH3627 for the houseH1004 of the LordH3068, utensilsH3627 for the serviceH8335 and the burntH5930 offeringsH5930, and pansH3709 and utensilsH3627 of goldH2091 and silverH3701. And they offeredH5927 burntH5930 offeringsH5930 in the houseH1004 of the LordH3068 continuallyH8548, allH3605 the daysH3117 of JehoiadaH3077.

15Now JehoiadaH3077 21reachedH2204 a goodH7646H3117 oldH2204 ageH3117 and he diedH4191; he was 130H3967H7970 yearsH8141 oldH1121 at his deathH4194. 16And they buriedH6912 him 22in the cityH5892 of DavidH1732 with the kingsH4428, becauseH3588 he had doneH6213 wellH2899 in 23IsraelH3478 and 24for GodH430 and His houseH1004.

17But afterH310 the deathH4194 of JehoiadaH3077 the officialsH8269 of JudahH3063 cameH935 and bowedH2331 downH2331 to the kingH4428, and the kingH4428 listenedH8085 to them. 18And they abandonedH5800 25the houseH1004 of the LordH3068, the GodH430 of their fathersH1, and 26servedH5647 the 27AsherimH842 and the idolsH6091; so 28wrathH7110 cameH1961 upon JudahH3063 and JerusalemH3389 for thisH2088 guiltH819 of theirs. 19Yet 29He sentH7971 prophetsH5030 to them to bringH7725 them backH7725 to the LordH3068; and they testifiedH5749 against them, but they would not listenH238.

Joash Murders Son of Jehoiada

2030Then the SpiritH7307 of GodH430 31coveredH3847 ZechariahH2148, the sonH1121 of JehoiadaH3077 the priestH3548 likeH3847 clothingH3847; and he stoodH5975 aboveH4480H5921 the peopleH5971 and saidH559 to them, “ThisH3541 isH3541 whatH3541 GodH430 has saidH559, ‘32WhyH4100 do you breakH5674 the commandmentsH4687 of the LordH3068 and do not prosperH6743? 33BecauseH3588 you have abandonedH5800 the LordH3068, He has also abandonedH5800 you.’” 21So 34they conspiredH7194 againstH5921 him, and at the commandH4687 of the kingH4428 they stonedH7275 him 35to deathH68 in the courtyardH2691 of the houseH1004 of the LordH3068. 22So JoashH3060 the kingH4428 did not rememberH2142 the kindnessH2617 whichH834 Zechariah’s fatherH1 JehoiadaH3077 had shownH6213 him, but he murderedH2026 his sonH1121. And as Zechariah diedH4194 he saidH559, “May 36the LordH3068 seeH7200 and 37avengeH1875!”

Aram Invades and Defeats Judah

23Now it happenedH1961 at the turnH8622 of the yearH8141 that 38the armyH2428 of the ArameansH758 cameH5927 upH5927 againstH5921 Joash; and they cameH935 to JudahH3063 and JerusalemH3389, destroyedH7843 allH3605 the officialsH8269 of the peopleH5971 from among the peopleH5971, and sentH7971 allH3605 their spoilsH7998 to the kingH4428 of DamascusH1834. 24IndeedH3588, the armyH2428 of the ArameansH758 cameH935 with a smallH4705 numberH4705 of menH376; yet 39the LordH3068 handedH5414H3027 a veryH3966 greatH7230 armyH2428 overH5414 to them, 40becauseH3588 41Judah and Joash had abandonedH5800 the LordH3068, the GodH430 of their fathersH1. So they executedH6213 judgmentH8201 on JoashH3060.

2542When they leftH1980 him (for they leftH5800 him veryH7227 sickH4251), his own servantsH5650 conspiredH7194 againstH5921 him because of the bloodH1818 of the 43sonH1121 of JehoiadaH3077 the priestH3548, and they murderedH2026 him on his bedH4296. So he diedH4191, and they buriedH6912 him in the cityH5892 of DavidH1732, but they did not buryH6912 him in the tombsH6913 of the kingsH4428. 26Now theseH428 are the men who conspiredH7194 againstH5921 him: ZabadH2066 the sonH1121 of ShimeathH8100 the AmmonitessH5985, and JehozabadH3075 the sonH1121 of ShimrithH8116 the MoabitessH4125. 27As to his sonsH1121 and the manyH7230 pronouncementsH4853 againstH5921 him and 44the 45rebuildingH3245 of the houseH1004 of GodH430, beholdH2009, they are writtenH3789 in the 4647treatiseH4097 of the BookH5612 of the KingsH4428. Then his sonH1121 AmaziahH558 becameH4427 kingH4427 inH8478 his placeH8478.
