Laws about Animals for Food

2“Speakדַּבְּר֛וּda.be.RuH1696to the sonsבְּנֵ֥יbe.NeiH1121of Israelיִשְׂרָאֵ֖לYis.ra.'ElH3478,sayingלֵאמֹ֑רle.MorH559, ‘TheseH2088are the creaturesH2421whichH834you may eatתֹּאכְל֔וּto.khe.LuH398from allמִכָּל־mi.kolH3605the animalsהַבְּהֵמָ֖הha.be.he.MahH929that are on the earthהָאָֽרֶץ׃ha.'A.retzH776.

3Whateverכֹּ֣ל׀kolH3605hasH6536a dividedמַפְרֶ֣סֶתmaf.Re.setH6536hoofפַּרְסָ֗הpar.SahH6541,showingH8156splitH8156hoofsפְּרָסֹ֔תpe.ra.SotH6541, andchewsמַעֲלַ֥תma.'a.LatH5927the cudגֵּרָ֖הge.RahH1625,among the animalsבַּבְּהֵמָ֑הba.be.he.MahH929,that you may eatתֹּאכֵֽלוּ׃to.Khe.luH398.

4Neverthelessאַ֤ךְ'akhH389,you are not to eatתֹֽאכְל֔וּto.khe.LuH398of theseזֶה֙zehH2088,among those which chewמִֽמַּעֲלֵי֙mi.ma.'a.LeiH5927the cudהַגֵּרָ֔הha.ge.RahH1625,or among those which haveH6536a dividedH6536hoofהַפַּרְסָ֑הha.par.SahH6541:the camelהַ֠גָּמָלHa.ga.molH1581,for though it chewsמַעֲלֵ֨הma.'a.LehH5927cudגֵרָ֜הge.RahH1625,it does not haveH6536a dividedH6536hoofוּפַרְסָה֙u.far.SahH6541;it is uncleanטָמֵ֥אta.Me'H2931to you.

5Likewise, the rockהַשָּׁפָ֗ןha.sha.FanH8227hyraxH8227,for though it chewsמַעֲלֵ֤הma.'a.LehH5927cudגֵרָה֙ge.RahH1625,it does not haveH6536a dividedיַפְרִ֑יסyaf.RisH6536hoofוּפַרְסָ֖הu.far.SahH6541;it is uncleanטָמֵ֥אta.Me'H2931to you.

9‘Theseזֶה֙zehH2088you may eatתֹּֽאכְל֔וּto.khe.LuH398,of whateverמִכֹּ֖לmi.KolH3605 H834is in the waterבַּמָּ֑יִםba.Ma.yimH4325:everythingכֹּ֣לkolH3605that has finsסְנַפִּ֨ירse.na.PirH5579and scalesוְקַשְׂקֶ֜שֶׂתve.kas.Ke.setH7193,in the waterבַּמַּ֗יִםba.Ma.yimH4325,in the seasבַּיַּמִּ֛יםbai.ya.MimH3220,or in the riversוּבַנְּחָלִ֖יםu.va.ne.cha.LimH5158,you may eatתֹּאכֵֽלוּ׃to.Khe.luH398.

Avoid the Unclean

13‘Moreover, theseאֵ֙לֶּה֙'e.lehH428you shall detestתְּשַׁקְּצ֣וּte.sha.ke.TzuH8262amongמִן־min-H4480the birdsהָע֔וֹףha.'ofH5775;they are detestableשֶׁ֣קֶץShe.ketzH8263,not to be eatenיֵאָכְל֖וּye.'a.khe.LuH398: theeagleהַנֶּ֙שֶׁר֙ha.Ne.sherH5404,the vultureהַפֶּ֔רֶסha.Pe.resH6538, and thebuzzardהָעָזְנִיָּֽה׃ha.'a.ze.ni.YahH5822,

18the whiteH8580owlהַתִּנְשֶׁ֥מֶתha.tin.She.metH8580, thepelicanהַקָּאָ֖תha.ka.'AtH6893,and the carrionH7360vultureהָרָחָֽם׃ha.ra.ChamH7360,

19the storkהַחֲסִידָ֔הha.cha.si.DahH2624,the heronהָאֲנָפָ֖הha.'a.na.FahH601in its kindsלְמִינָ֑הּle.mi.NahH4327,the hoopoeהַדּוּכִיפַ֖תha.du.khi.FatH1744,and the batהָעֲטַלֵּֽף׃ha.'a.ta.LefH5847.

29‘Now theseוְזֶ֤הve.ZehH2088are to you the uncleanהַטָּמֵ֔אha.ta.Me'H2931among the swarmingבַּשֶּׁ֖רֶץba.She.retzH8318thingsH8318which swarmהַשֹּׁרֵ֣ץha.sho.RetzH8317on the earthהָאָ֑רֶץha.'A.retzH776:the moleהַחֹ֥לֶדha.Cho.ledH2467,the mouseוְהָעַכְבָּ֖רve.ha.'akh.BarH5909, and thegreatH6632lizardH6632in its kindsלְמִינֵֽהוּ׃le.mi.Ne.huH4327,

30the geckoוְהָאֲנָקָ֥הve.ha.'a.na.KahH604, thecrocodileוְהַכֹּ֖חַve.ha.Ko.achH3581,the lizardוְהַלְּטָאָ֑הve.ha.le.ta.'AhH3911, thesandH2546reptileH2546,and the chameleonוְהַתִּנְשָֽׁמֶת׃ve.ha.tin.Sha.metH8580.

31Theseאֵ֛לֶּה'E.lehH428are to you the uncleanהַטְּמֵאִ֥יםha.te.me.'ImH2931among allבְּכָל־be.kholH3605the swarmingהַשָּׁ֑רֶץha.Sha.retzH8318thingsH8318;whoeverכָּל־kol-H3605touchesהַנֹּגֵ֧עַha.no.Ge.a'H5060them when they are deadבְּמֹתָ֖םbe.mo.TamH4194becomesH2930uncleanיִטְמָ֥אyit.Ma'H2930untilעַד־'ad-H5704eveningהָעָֽרֶב׃ha.'A.revH6153.

33As for anyוְכָל־ve.kholH3605earthenwareחֶ֔רֶשׂChe.resH2789vesselכְּלִי־ke.li-H3627into whichאֲשֶׁר־'a.Sher-H834one of them may fallיִפֹּ֥לyi.PolH5307,whateverכֹּ֣ל אֲשֶׁ֧רkol 'a.SherH3605 H834is in it becomesH2930uncleanיִטְמָ֖אyit.Ma'H2930and you shall breakתִשְׁבֹּֽרוּ׃tish.Bo.ruH7665the vessel.

34Anyמִכָּל־mi.kolH4480 H3605of thefoodהָאֹ֜כֶלha.'O.khelH400whichאֲשֶׁ֣ר'a.SherH834may be eatenיֵאָכֵ֗לye.'a.KhelH398,on whichאֲשֶׁ֨ר'a.SherH834waterמַ֖יִםMa.yimH4325comesיָב֥וֹאya.Vo'H935,shall becomeH2930uncleanיִטְמָ֑אyit.Ma'H2930,and anyוְכָל־ve.kholH3605liquidמַשְׁקֶה֙mash.KehH4945whichאֲשֶׁ֣ר'a.SherH834may beH8354drunkיִשָּׁתֶ֔הyi.sha.TehH8354in everyבְּכָל־be.kholH3605vesselכְּלִ֖יke.LiH3627shall becomeH2930uncleanיִטְמָֽא׃yit.Ma'H2930.

35Moreover, everythingוְ֠כֹלVe.kholH3605on whichאֲשֶׁר־'a.Sher-H834part of their carcassמִנִּבְלָתָ֥ם׀mi.niv.la.TamH5038may fallיִפֹּ֨לyi.PolH5307becomesH2930uncleanיִטְמָא֒yit.Ma'H2930;an ovenתַּנּ֧וּרta.NurH8574or astoveוְכִירַ֛יִםve.khi.Ra.yimH3600shall beH5422smashedH5422;they are uncleanטְמֵאִ֣יםte.me.'ImH2931and shall continueיִהְי֥וּyih.YuH1961as uncleanוּטְמֵאִ֖יםu.te.me.'ImH2931to you.

36Neverthelessאַ֣ךְ'akhH389,a springמַעְיָ֥ןma'.YanH4599or a cisternוּב֛וֹרu.VorH953collectingמִקְוֵה־mik.veh-H4723waterמַ֖יִםMa.yimH4325shall be cleanטָה֑וֹרta.HorH2889,though the one who touchesוְנֹגֵ֥עַve.no.Ge.a'H5060their carcassבְּנִבְלָתָ֖םbe.niv.la.TamH5038shall beH2930uncleanיִטְמָֽא׃yit.Ma'H2930.

37Now ifוְכִ֤יve.KhiH3588a part of their carcassמִנִּבְלָתָ֔םmi.niv.la.TamH5038fallsיִפֹּל֙yi.PolH5307on anyכָּל־kol-H3605seedזֶ֥רַעZe.ra'H2233for sowingזֵר֖וּעַze.Ru.a'H2221whichאֲשֶׁ֣ר'a.SherH834is to be sownיִזָּרֵ֑עַyi.za.Re.a'H2232,it is cleanטָה֖וֹרta.HorH2889.

38But ifוְכִ֤יve.KhiH3588waterמַ֙יִם֙ma.yimH4325is putיֻתַּן־yu.tan-H5414on the seedזֶ֔רַעZe.ra'H2233and a part of their carcassמִנִּבְלָתָ֖םmi.niv.la.TamH5038fallsוְנָפַ֥לve.na.FalH5307on it, it is uncleanטָמֵ֥אta.Me'H2931to you.

39‘Also ifוְכִ֤יve.KhiH3588one of the animalsהַבְּהֵמָ֔הha.be.he.MahH929diesיָמוּת֙ya.MutH4191whichאֲשֶׁר־'a.Sher-H834you have for foodלְאָכְלָ֑הle.'okh.LahH402,the one who touchesהַנֹּגֵ֥עַha.no.Ge.a'H5060its carcassבְּנִבְלָתָ֖הּbe.niv.la.TahH5038becomesH2930uncleanיִטְמָ֥אyit.Ma'H2930untilעַד־'ad-H5704eveningהָעָֽרֶב׃ha.'A.revH6153.

42Whateverכֹּל֩kolH3605crawlsהוֹלֵ֨ךְho.LekhH1980on its bellyגָּח֜וֹןga.ChonH1512,and whateverוְכֹ֣ל׀ve.KholH3605walksהוֹלֵ֣ךְho.LekhH1980on allfoursאַרְבַּ֗ע'ar.Ba'H702,whateverכָּל־kol-H3605hasH7235manyH7235feetרַגְלַ֔יִםrag.La.yimH7272,in regard to everyלְכָל־le.kholH3605swarmingH8318thingהַשֶּׁ֖רֶץha.She.retzH8318that swarmsהַשֹּׁרֵ֣ץha.sho.RetzH8317on the earthהָאָ֑רֶץha.'A.retzH776,you shall not eatתֹאכְל֖וּםtokh.LumH398them, becauseכִּי־ki-H3588they are detestableשֶׁ֥קֶץShe.ketzH8263.

43Do not makeתְּשַׁקְּצוּ֙te.sha.ke.TzuH8262yourselvesנַפְשֹׁ֣תֵיכֶ֔םnaf.Sho.tei.KhemH5315detestableH8262through anyבְּכָל־be.kholH3605of the swarmingהַשֶּׁ֖רֶץha.She.retzH8318thingsH8318that swarmהַשֹּׁרֵ֑ץha.sho.RetzH8317;and you shall not makeתִֽטַּמְּאוּ֙ti.ta.me.'UH2930yourselves uncleanH2930with them so that you becomeH2930uncleanוְנִטְמֵתֶ֖םve.nit.me.TemH2930.
