Israel Provoked God
1“HearH8085, IsraelH3478! You are crossingH5674 the JordanH3383 todayH3117, to goH935 inH935 to dispossessH3423 1nationsH1471 greaterH1419 and mightierH6099 thanH4480 you, citiesH5892 that are greatH1419 and 2fortifiedH1219 to heavenH8064, 2a peopleH5971 who are greatH1419 and tallH7311, the sonsH1121 of the AnakimH6062, whomH834 you knowH3045 and of whomH834 you have heardH8085 it said, ‘3WhoH4310 can standH3320 againstH6440 the sonsH1121 of AnakH6061?’ 3So beH3045 awareH3045 todayH3117 that 4it is the LordH3068 your GodH430 who is crossingH5674 overH5674 aheadH6440 of you as 5a consumingH398 fireH784. He will destroyH8045 them and He will subdueH3665 them beforeH6440 you, so that 6you may driveH3423 them outH3423 and eliminateH6 them quicklyH4118, justH3512 asH3512 the LordH3068 has spokenH1696 to you.
4“7Do not sayH559 in your heartH3824 when the LordH3068 your GodH430 has drivenH1920 them awayH1920 from 8you, ‘Because of my righteousnessH6666 the LordH3068 has broughtH935 me inH935 to takeH3423 possessionH3423 of thisH2088 landH776.’ Rather, it is 9because of the 10wickednessH7564 of theseH428 nationsH1471 that the LordH3068 is dispossessingH3423 them beforeH4480H6440 you. 5It is 11not because of your righteousnessH6666 or the uprightnessH3476 of your heartH3824 that you are goingH935 inH935 to takeH3423 possessionH3423 of their landH776, 12but it is becauseH3588 of the 13wickednessH7564 of theseH428 nationsH1471 that the LordH3068 your GodH430 is drivingH3423 them outH3423 from beforeH6440 you, and inH4616 orderH4616 toH4616 confirmH6965 14the 15oathH1697 whichH834 the LordH3068 sworeH7650 to your fathersH1, to AbrahamH85, IsaacH3327, and JacobH3290.
6“KnowH3045, then, that it is not because of your righteousnessH6666 that the LordH3068 your GodH430 is givingH5414 you thisH2088 goodH2896 landH776 to possessH3423, for you are 16a 17stubbornH7186H6203 peopleH5971. 7RememberH2142, do not forgetH7911 howH854H834 you provokedH7107 the LordH3068 your GodH430 toH7107 angerH7107 in the wildernessH4057; 18from the dayH3117 that you leftH3318 the landH776 of EgyptH4714 untilH5704 you arrivedH935 at thisH2088 placeH4725, you have beenH1961 rebelliousH4784 againstH5973 the LordH3068. 8Even 19at HorebH2722 you provokedH7107 the LordH3068 toH7107 angerH7107, and the LordH3068 was so angryH599 with you that He would have destroyedH8045 you. 9When I wentH5927 upH5927 to the mountainH2022 to receiveH3947 the tabletsH3871 of stoneH68, the tabletsH3871 of the covenantH1285 whichH834 the LordH3068 madeH3772 with you, then I remainedH3427 on the mountainH2022 for fortyH705 daysH3117 and nightsH3915; 20I neitherH3808 ateH398 breadH3899 norH3808 drankH8354 waterH4325. 10The LordH3068 gaveH5414 me the twoH8147 tabletsH3871 of stoneH68 21writtenH3789 by the fingerH676 of GodH430; and on them were allH3605 the wordsH1697 whichH834 the LordH3068 had spokenH1696 with you at the mountainH2022 from the midstH8432 of the fireH784 on the dayH3117 of the assemblyH6951. 11It cameH1961 aboutH1961 22at the endH7093 of fortyH705 daysH3117 and nightsH3915 that the LordH3068 gaveH5414 me the twoH8147 tabletsH3871 of stoneH68, the tabletsH3871 of the covenantH1285. 1223Then the LordH3068 saidH559 to me, ‘AriseH6965, goH3381 downH3381 from hereH2088 quicklyH4118, becauseH3588 your peopleH5971, whomH834 you broughtH3318 outH3318 of EgyptH4714, have behavedH7843 corruptlyH7843. They have 24quicklyH4118 turnedH5493 asideH5493 from the wayH1870 thatH834 I commandedH6680 them; they have madeH6213 a castH4541 metalH4541 imageH4541 for themselves.’ 13The 25LordH3068 also saidH559 to 26me, ‘I have seenH7200 thisH2088 peopleH5971, and indeedH2009, it is a 2728stubbornH7186H6203 peopleH5971. 1429LeaveH7503 Me aloneH4480H7503, that I may destroyH8045 them and 30wipeH4229 outH4229 their nameH8034 from underH8478 heavenH8064; and I will makeH6213 of you a nationH1471 mightierH6099 and greaterH7227 thanH4480 they.’
15“31So I turnedH6437 and cameH3381 downH3381 from the mountainH2022 while the mountainH2022 was burningH1197 with fireH784, and the twoH8147 tabletsH3871 of the covenantH1285 were in my twoH8147 handsH3027. 16And I sawH7200 that you had indeedH2009 sinnedH2398 against the LordH3068 your GodH430. You had madeH6213 for yourselves a castH4541 metalH4541 imageH4541 of a calfH5695; you had quicklyH4118 turnedH5493 asideH5493 from the wayH1870 that the LordH3068 had commandedH6680 you. 17So I tookH8610 holdH8610 of the twoH8147 tabletsH3871 and threwH7993 them from my twoH8147 handsH3027, and smashedH7665 them toH7665 piecesH7665 before your eyesH5869! 1832Then I fellH5307 downH5307 beforeH6440 the LordH3068 33like the firstH7223 time, for fortyH705 daysH3117 and nightsH3915; 34I neitherH3808 ateH398 breadH3899 norH3808 drankH8354 waterH4325, 35becauseH5921 of allH3605 your sinH2403 whichH834 you had committedH2398 by doingH6213 whatH7451 wasH7451 evilH7451 in the sightH5869 of the LordH3068, to provokeH3707 Him toH3707 angerH3707. 19For 36I was afraidH3025 of the angerH639 and the rageH2534 with whichH834 the LordH3068 wasH7107 angryH7107 with you so as to destroyH8045 you; 37but the LordH3068 listenedH8085 to me that timeH6471 asH1571 wellH1571. 20The LordH3068 was also angryH599 enoughH3966 with AaronH175 to destroyH8045 him; so I alsoH1571 prayedH6419 for AaronH175 at the sameH1931 timeH6256. 2138And I tookH3947 your 39sinfulH2403 thing whichH834 you had madeH6213, the calfH5695, and burnedH8313 it in the fireH784 and crushedH3807 it, grindingH2912 it thoroughlyH3190 untilH5704H834 it was as fineH1854 as dustH6083; and I threwH7993 its dustH6083 into the streamH5158 that cameH3381 downH3381 from the mountainH2022.
22“Then at 40TaberahH8404, at 41MassahH4532, and at 42Kibroth-hattaavahH6914 you kept provokingH7107 the LordH3068 toH7107 angerH7107. 23And when the LordH3068 sentH7971 you from 43Kadesh-barneaH6947, sayingH559, ‘44GoH5927 upH5927 and takeH3423 possessionH3423 of the landH776 whichH834 I have givenH5414 you,’ you rebelledH4784 againstH854 the 45commandH6310 of the LordH3068 your GodH430; 46you neitherH3808 trustedH539 Him norH3808 listenedH8085 to His voiceH6963. 2447You have beenH1961 rebelliousH4784 towardH5973 the LordH3068 sinceH4480 the dayH3117 I knewH3045 you.
25“48So I fellH5307 downH5307 beforeH6440 the LordH3068 for the fortyH705 daysH3117 and nightsH3915, whichH834 I 49didH5307 becauseH3588 the LordH3068 saidH559 He would destroyH8045 you. 2650And I prayedH6419 to the LordH3068 and saidH559, ‘LordH136 GodH3068, do not destroyH7843 Your peopleH5971, Your inheritanceH5159, whomH834 You have redeemedH6299 through Your greatnessH1433, whomH834 You have broughtH3318 outH3318 of EgyptH4714 with a mightyH2389 handH3027! 27RememberH2142 Your servantsH5650, AbrahamH85, IsaacH3327, and JacobH3290; do not turnH6437 Your attentionH6437 to the stubbornnessH7190 of thisH2088 peopleH5971, or to their wickednessH7562, or their sinH2403. 28OtherwiseH6435, the people of the landH776 from whichH834 You broughtH3318 us will sayH559, “51SinceH4480H1097 the LordH3068 wasH3201 not ableH3201 to bringH935 them into the landH776 whichH834 He had 52promisedH1696 them, and sinceH4480 He hatedH8135 them, He has broughtH3318 them outH3318 to killH4191 them in the wildernessH4057!” 29Yet they are Your peopleH5971, and 53Your inheritanceH5159, whomH834 You broughtH3318 outH3318 by Your 54greatH1419 powerH3581 and Your outstretchedH5186 armH2220.’
