Covenant of the Rainbow

1And Godאֱלֹהִ֔ים'E.lo.HimH430blessedוַיְבָ֣רֶךְvay.Va.rekhH1288Noahנֹ֖חַNo.achH5146and his sonsבָּנָ֑יוba.NavH1121and saidוַיֹּ֧אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559to them, “Be fruitfulפְּר֥וּpe.RuH6509and multiplyוּרְב֖וּu.re.VuH7235,and fillוּמִלְא֥וּu.mil.'UH4390the earthהָאָֽרֶץ׃ha.'A.retzH776.

2The fearוּמוֹרַאֲכֶ֤םu.mo.ra.'a.KhemH4172of you and the terrorוְחִתְּכֶם֙ve.chi.te.KhemH2844of you will be on everyכָּל־kol-H3605beastH2421of the earthהָאָ֔רֶץha.'A.retzH776and on everyכָּל־kol-H3605birdע֣וֹףofH5775of theskyהַשָּׁמָ֑יִםha.sha.Ma.yimH8064;with everythingבְּכֹל֩be.KholH3605that creepsתִּרְמֹ֧שׂtir.MosH7430on the groundהָֽאֲדָמָ֛הha.'a.da.MahH127,and allוּֽבְכָל־u.ve.Khol-H3605the fishדְּגֵ֥יde.GeiH1709of the seaהַיָּ֖םhai.YamH3220,into your handבְּיֶדְכֶ֥םbe.yed.KhemH3027they are givenנִתָּֽנוּ׃ni.Ta.nuH5414.

3Everyכָּל־kol-H3605movingH7431thingרֶ֙מֶשׂ֙Re.mesH7431that is aliveחַ֔יChaiH2416shall be foodלְאָכְלָ֑הle.'okh.LahH402for you; I giveנָתַ֥תִּיna.Ta.tiH5414allכֹּֽל׃KolH3605to you, as I gavethe greenכְּיֶ֣רֶקke.Ye.rekH3418plantעֵ֔שֶׂב'E.sevH6212.

4Onlyאַךְ־'akh-H389you shall not eatתֹאכֵֽלוּ׃to.Khe.luH398fleshבָּשָׂ֕רba.SarH1320with its lifeבְּנַפְשׁ֥וֹbe.naf.ShoH5315, that is,its bloodדָמ֖וֹda.MoH1818.

5Surelyוְאַ֨ךְve.'AkhH389I will requireאֶדְרֹ֔שׁ'ed.RoshH1875your lifebloodדִּמְכֶ֤ם לְנַפְשֹֽׁתֵיכֶם֙dim.Khem le.naf.sho.tei.KhemH1818 H5315;from everyכָּל־kol-H3605beastH2421I will requireאֶדְרְשֶׁ֑נּוּ'ed.re.She.nuH1875it. And from everymanהָֽאָדָ֗םha.'a.DamH120,from everyH376man’sH376brotherאָחִ֔יו'a.ChivH251I will requireאֶדְרֹ֖שׁ'ed.RoshH1875the lifeנֶ֥פֶשׁNe.feshH5315of manהָֽאָדָֽם׃Ha.'a.DamH120.

6Whoever shedsשֹׁפֵךְ֙sho.feKhH8210man’sהָֽאָדָ֔םha.'a.DamH120bloodדַּ֣םdamH1818,By manבָּֽאָדָ֖םba.'a.DamH120his bloodדָּמ֣וֹda.MoH1818shall be shedיִשָּׁפֵ֑ךְyi.sha.FekhH8210, Forin the imageבְּצֶ֣לֶםbe.Tze.lemH6754of Godאֱלֹהִ֔ים'E.lo.HimH430He madeעָשָׂ֖ה'a.SahH6213manהָאָדָֽם׃ha.'a.DamH120.

7As for you,be fruitfulפְּר֣וּpe.RuH6509and multiplyוּרְב֑וּu.re.VuH7235;PopulateH8317the earthבָאָ֖רֶץva.'A.retzH776abundantlyH8317and multiplyוּרְבוּ־u.re.vu-H7235in it.”

8Then Godאֱלֹהִים֙'E.lo.HimH430spokeוַיֹּ֤אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559to Noahנֹ֔חַNo.achH5146and to his sonsבָּנָ֥יוba.NavH1121with him, sayingלֵאמֹֽר׃le.MorH559,

9“Now beholdH2009,I Myselfוַאֲנִ֕יva.'a.NiH589do establishמֵקִ֛יםme.KimH6965My covenantבְּרִיתִ֖יbe.ri.TiH1285with you, and with yourdescendantsזַרְעֲכֶ֖םzar.'a.KhemH2233afterאַֽחֲרֵיכֶֽם׃'A.cha.rei.KhemH310you;

10and with everyכָּל־kol-H3605livingH2416creatureנֶ֤פֶשׁNe.feshH5315that is with you, the birdsבָּע֧וֹףba.'ofH5775,the cattleבַּבְּהֵמָ֛הba.be.he.MahH929,and everyוּֽבְכָל־u.ve.Khol-H3605beastH2421of the earthהָאָ֖רֶץha.'A.retzH776with you; of allמִכֹּל֙mi.KolH3605that comesיֹצְאֵ֣יyo.tze.'EiH3318out of the arkהַתֵּבָ֔הha.te.VahH8392,even everyלְכֹ֖לle.KholH3605beastH2421of the earthהָאָֽרֶץ׃ha.'A.retzH776.

11I establishוַהֲקִמֹתִ֤יva.ha.ki.mo.TiH6965My covenantבְּרִיתִי֙be.ri.TiH1285with you; and allכָּל־kol-H3605fleshבָּשָׂ֛רba.SarH1320shallneverוְלֹֽא־ve.lo'-H3808againע֖וֹדodH5750be cutיִכָּרֵ֧תyi.ka.RetH3772offH3772by the waterמִמֵּ֣יmi.MeiH4325of the floodהַמַּבּ֑וּלha.ma.BulH3999,neitherוְלֹֽא־ve.lo'-H3808shall there againע֛וֹדodH5750be a floodמַבּ֖וּלma.BulH3999to destroyלְשַׁחֵ֥תle.sha.ChetH7843the earthהָאָֽרֶץ׃ha.'A.retzH776.”

12Godאֱלֹהִ֗ים'E.lo.HimH430saidוַיֹּ֣אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559, “ThisH2088isthe signאֽוֹת־'ot-H226of the covenantהַבְּרִית֙ha.be.RitH1285whichH834I am makingנֹתֵ֗ןno.TenH5414betweenH996Me and you and everyכָּל־kol-H3605livingחַיָּ֖הchai.YahH2416creatureנֶ֥פֶשׁNe.feshH5315that is with you, forallH5769successiveH5769generationsלְדֹרֹ֖תle.do.RotH1755;

13I setנָתַ֖תִּיna.Ta.tiH5414Mybowקַשְׁתִּ֕יkash.TiH7198in the cloudבֶּֽעָנָ֑ןbe.'a.NanH6051,and it shall be for a signלְא֣וֹתle.'otH226of a covenantבְּרִ֔יתbe.RitH1285betweenH996Me and the earthהָאָֽרֶץ׃ha.'A.retzH776.

14It shall comeוְהָיָ֕הve.ha.YahH1961about, when I bringבְּעַֽנְנִ֥יbe.'a.NiH6049a cloudעָנָ֖ן'a.NanH6051overעַל־'al-H5921the earthהָאָ֑רֶץha.'A.retzH776,that the bowהַקֶּ֖שֶׁתha.Ke.shetH7198will be seenוְנִרְאֲתָ֥הve.nir.'a.TahH7200in the cloudבֶּעָנָֽן׃be.'a.NanH6051,

15andI will rememberוְזָכַרְתִּ֣יve.za.khar.TiH2142My covenantבְּרִיתִ֗יbe.ri.TiH1285,whichאֲשֶׁ֤ר'a.SherH834is betweenH996Me and you and everyכָּל־kol-H3605livingחַיָּ֖הchai.YahH2416creatureנֶ֥פֶשׁNe.feshH5315of allבְּכָל־be.kholH3605fleshבָּשָׂ֑רba.SarH1320; andneverוְלֹֽא־ve.lo'-H3808againע֤וֹדodH5750shall the waterהַמַּ֙יִם֙ha.Ma.yimH4325becomeיִֽהְיֶ֨הyih.YehH1961a floodלְמַבּ֔וּלle.ma.BulH3999to destroyלְשַׁחֵ֖תle.sha.ChetH7843allכָּל־kol-H3605fleshבָּשָֽׂר׃ba.SarH1320.

16When the bowהַקֶּ֖שֶׁתha.Ke.shetH7198is in the cloudבֶּֽעָנָ֑ןbe.'a.NanH6051,then I will lookוּרְאִיתִ֗יהָu.re.'i.Ti.haH7200upon it, to rememberלִזְכֹּר֙liz.KorH2142theeverlastingעוֹלָ֔םo.LamH5769covenantבְּרִ֣יתbe.RitH1285betweenH996Godאֱלֹהִ֔ים'E.lo.HimH430and everyכָּל־kol-H3605livingחַיָּ֔הchai.YahH2416creatureנֶ֣פֶשׁNe.feshH5315of allבְּכָל־be.kholH3605fleshבָּשָׂ֖רba.SarH1320that is on the earthהָאָֽרֶץ׃ha.'A.retzH776.”

17And Godאֱלֹהִ֖ים'E.lo.HimH430saidוַיֹּ֥אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559to Noahנֹ֑חַNo.achH5146, “ThisH2088is the signאֽוֹת־'ot-H226of the covenantהַבְּרִית֙ha.be.RitH1285whichH834I have establishedהֲקִמֹ֔תִיha.ki.Mo.tiH6965betweenH996Me and allכָּל־kol-H3605fleshבָּשָׂ֖רba.SarH1320that is on the earthהָאָֽרֶץ׃ פha.'A.retzH776.”

18Now the sonsבְנֵי־ve.nei-H1121of Noahנֹ֗חַNo.achH5146who cameהַיֹּֽצְאִים֙hai.yo.tze.'ImH3318out of the arkהַתֵּבָ֔הha.te.VahH8392were Shemשֵׁ֖םshemH8035and Hamוְחָ֣םve.ChamH2526and Japhethוָיָ֑פֶתva.Ya.fetH3315; andHamוְחָ֕םve.ChamH2526was the fatherאֲבִ֥י'a.ViH1of Canaanכְנָֽעַן׃khe.Na.'anH3667.

19Theseאֵ֖לֶּה'E.lehH428threeשְׁלֹשָׁ֥הshe.lo.ShahH7969werethe sonsבְּנֵי־be.nei-H1121of Noahנֹ֑חַNo.achH5146, andfrom theseוּמֵאֵ֖לֶּהu.me.'E.lehH428the wholeכָל־khol-H3605earthהָאָֽרֶץ׃ha.'A.retzH776waspopulatedנָֽפְצָ֥הna.fe.TzahH5310.

20Then Noahנֹ֖חַNo.achH5146beganוַיָּ֥חֶלvai.Ya.chelH2490farmingאִ֣ישׁ הָֽאֲדָמָ֑ה'ish ha.'a.da.MahH376 H127and plantedוַיִּטַּ֖עvai.yi.Ta'H5193a vineyardכָּֽרֶם׃Ka.remH3754.

21He drankוַיֵּ֥שְׁתְּvai.Ye.shetH8354of the wineהַיַּ֖יִןhai.Ya.yinH3196andbecameH7937drunkוַיִּשְׁכָּ֑רvai.yish.KarH7937,and uncoveredוַיִּתְגַּ֖לvai.yit.GalH1540himself insideבְּת֥וֹךְbe.TokhH8432his tentאָהֳלֽוֹ׃'o.ho.LoH168.

22Hamחָ֚םchamH2526,the fatherאֲבִ֣י'a.ViH1of Canaanכְנַ֔עַןkhe.Na.'anH3667,sawוַיַּ֗רְאvai.Yar'H7200the nakednessעֶרְוַ֣ת'er.VatH6172of his fatherאָבִ֑יו'a.VivH1,and toldוַיַּגֵּ֥דvai.ya.GedH5046his twoלִשְׁנֵֽי־lish.nei-H8147brothersאֶחָ֖יו'e.ChavH251outsideבַּחֽוּץ׃ba.ChutzH2351.

23But Shemשֵׁ֨םshemH8035and Japhethוָיֶ֜פֶתva.Ye.fetH3315tookוַיִּקַּח֩vai.yi.KachH3947a garmentהַשִּׂמְלָ֗הha.sim.LahH8071and laidוַיָּשִׂ֙ימוּ֙vai.ya.Si.muH7760it upon bothשְׁנֵיהֶ֔םshe.nei.HemH8147their shouldersשְׁכֶ֣םshe.KhemH7926and walkedוַיֵּֽלְכוּ֙vai.yel.KhuH1980backwardH322and coveredוַיְכַסּ֕וּvay.kha.SuH3680the nakednessעֶרְוַ֣ת'er.VatH6172of their fatherאֲבִיהֶ֑ם'a.vi.HemH1;and their facesוּפְנֵיהֶם֙u.fe.nei.HemH6440wereturnedH322awayH322,so that they did not seeרָאֽוּ׃ra.'UH7200their father’sאֲבִיהֶ֖ם'a.vi.HemH1nakednessוְעֶרְוַ֥תve.'er.VatH6172.

24When Noahנֹ֖חַNo.achH5146awokeוַיִּ֥יקֶץvai.Yi.ketzH3364from his wineמִיֵּינ֑וֹmi.yei.NoH3196,he knewוַיֵּ֕דַעvai.Ye.da'H3045whatאֲשֶׁר־'a.Sher-H834his youngestהַקָּטָֽן׃ha.ka.TanH6996sonבְּנ֥וֹbe.NoH1121had doneעָ֥שָׂה־'A.sah-H6213to him.

25So he saidוַיֹּ֖אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559, “Cursedאָר֣וּר'a.RurH779be Canaanכְּנָ֑עַןke.Na.'anH3667;A servantעֶ֥בֶד'E.vedH5650of servantsעֲבָדִ֖ים'a.va.DimH5650He shall be to his brothersלְאֶחָֽיו׃le.'e.ChavH251.”

26He also saidוַיֹּ֕אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559, “Blessedבָּר֥וּךְba.RukhH1288be the Lordיְהֹוָ֖הYah.wehH3068,The Godאֱלֹ֣הֵי'e.Lo.heiH430of Shemשֵׁ֑םShemH8035;And let Canaanכְנַ֖עַןkhe.Na.'anH3667behis servantעֶ֥בֶד'E.vedH5650.

27May Godאֱלֹהִים֙'E.lo.HimH430enlargeיַ֤פְתְּyaftH6601Japhethלְיֶ֔פֶתle.Ye.fetH3315,And let him dwellוְיִשְׁכֹּ֖ןve.yish.KonH7931in the tentsבְּאָֽהֳלֵי־be.'o.ho.lei-H168of Shemשֵׁ֑םShemH8035;And let Canaanכְנַ֖עַןkhe.Na.'anH3667behis servantעֶ֥בֶד'E.vedH5650.”

28Noahנֹ֖חַNo.achH5146livedוַֽיְחִי־vay.chi-H2421threeשְׁלֹ֤שׁshe.LoshH7969hundredמֵאוֹת֙me.'OtH3967and fiftyוַֽחֲמִשִּׁ֖יםva.cha.mi.ShimH2572yearsH8141afterאַחַ֣ר'a.CharH310the floodהַמַּבּ֑וּלha.ma.BulH3999.

29So allכָּל־kol-H3605the daysיְמֵי־ye.mei-H3117of Noahנֹ֔חַNo.achH5146were nineתְּשַׁ֤עte.Sha'H8672hundredמֵאוֹת֙me.'OtH3967and fiftyוַחֲמִשִּׁ֖יםva.cha.mi.ShimH2572yearsH8141,and he diedוַיָּמֹֽת׃ פvai.ya.MotH4191.
