1And Jacobוְיַעֲקֹ֖בve.ya.'a.KoH3290wentH1980on his wayלְדַרְכּ֑וֹle.dar.KoH1870,and the angelsמַלְאֲכֵ֥יmal.'a.KheiH4397of Godאֱלֹהִֽים׃'E.lo.HimH430metוַיִּפְגְּעוּ־vai.yif.ge.'u-H6293him.

2And when JacobH3290saw themרָאָ֔םra.'AmH7200,he saidוַיֹּ֤אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559, This isGod’sH430hostמַחֲנֵ֥הma.cha.NehH4264:and he calledוַיִּקְרָ֛אvai.yik.Ra'H7121the nameשֵֽׁם־shem-H8034of that placeהַמָּק֥וֹםha.ma.KomH4725Mahanaimמַֽחֲנָֽיִם׃ פMa.cha.Na.yimH4266.

3And JacobH3290sentוַיִּשְׁלַ֨חvai.yish.LachH7971messengersמַלְאָכִים֙mal.'a.KhimH4397before himלְפָנָ֔יוle.fa.NavH6440to Esauעֵשָׂ֖ו'e.SavH6215his brotherאָחִ֑יו'a.ChivH251unto the landאַ֥רְצָה'Ar.tzahH776of Seirשֵׂעִ֖ירse.'IrH8165,the countryשְׂדֵ֥הse.DehH7704of Edomאֱדֽוֹם׃'e.DomH123.

4And he commandedוַיְצַ֤וvay.TzavH6680them, sayingלֵאמֹ֔רle.MorH559,Thus shall ye speakתֹאמְר֔וּןtom.RunH559unto my lordלַֽאדֹנִ֖יla.do.NiH113EsauH6215;Thy servantעַבְדְּךָ֣'av.de.KhaH5650JacobH3290saithאָמַר֙'a.MarH559thus, I have sojournedגַּ֔רְתִּיGar.tiH1481with Labanלָבָ֣ןla.VanH3837,and stayed thereוָאֵחַ֖רva.'e.CharH309until now:

5And I have oxenשׁ֣וֹרShorH7794,and assesוַחֲמ֔וֹרva.cha.MorH2543,flocksצֹ֖אןtzonH6629,and menservantsH5650,and womenservantsוְשִׁפְחָ֑הve.shif.ChahH8198:and I have sentוָֽאֶשְׁלְחָה֙va.'esh.le.ChahH7971to tellלְהַגִּ֣ידle.ha.GidH5046my lordH113,that I may findלִמְצֹא־lim.tzo'-H4672graceחֵ֖ןchenH2580in thy sightבְּעֵינֶֽיךָ׃be.'ei.Nei.khaH5869.

6And the messengersהַמַּלְאָכִ֔יםha.mal.'a.KhimH4397returnedוַיָּשֻׁ֙בוּ֙vai.ya.Shu.vuH7725to Jacobיַעֲקֹ֖בya.'a.KoH3290,sayingלֵאמֹ֑רle.MorH559,We cameבָּ֤אנוּBa.nuH935to thy brotherאָחִ֙יךָ֙'a.Chi.khaH251Esauעֵשָׂ֔ו'e.SavH6215,and also he comethהֹלֵ֣ךְho.LekhH1980to meet theeH7125,and four hundredמֵא֥וֹתme.'otH3967menאִ֖ישׁ'ishH376with him.

7Then JacobH3290was greatlyמְאֹ֖דme.'OdH3966afraidוַיִּירָ֧אvai.yi.Ra'H3372and distressedוַיֵּ֣צֶרvai.Ye.tzerH3334:and he dividedוַיַּ֜חַץvai.Ya.chatzH2673the peopleהָעָ֣םha.'AmH5971that waswith him, and the flocksהַצֹּ֧אןha.TzonH6629,and herdsהַבָּקָ֛רha.ba.KarH1241,and the camelsוְהַגְּמַלִּ֖יםve.hag.ge.ma.LimH1581,into twoלִשְׁנֵ֥יlish.NeiH8147bandsמַחֲנֽוֹת׃ma.cha.NotH4264;

8And saidוַיֹּ֕אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559,If Esauעֵשָׂ֛ו'e.SavH6215comeיָב֥וֹאya.Vo'H935to the oneהָאַחַ֖תha.'a.ChatH259companyH4264,and smite itוְהִכָּ֑הוּve.hi.Ka.huH5221,then the other companyH4264which is leftהַנִּשְׁאָ֖רha.nish.'ArH7604shall escapeלִפְלֵיטָֽה׃lif.lei.TahH6413.

9And Jacobיַעֲקֹב֒ya.'a.KoH3290saidH559,O Godאֱלֹהֵי֙'e.lo.HeiH430of my fatherאָבִ֣י'a.ViH1Abrahamאַבְרָהָ֔ם'av.ra.HamH85,and Godוֵאלֹהֵ֖יve.lo.HeiH430of my fatherאָבִ֣י'a.ViH1Isaacיִצְחָ֑קyitz.ChakH3327,the Lordיְהוָ֞הYah.wehH3068which saidstH559unto me, Returnשׁ֧וּבshuvH7725unto thy countryלְאַרְצְךָ֛le.'ar.tze.KhaH776,and to thy kindredוּלְמוֹלַדְתְּךָ֖u.le.mo.lad.te.KhaH4138,and I will deal wellוְאֵיטִ֥יבָהve.'ei.Ti.vahH3190with thee:

10I am not worthy of the leastקָטֹ֜נְתִּיka.To.ne.tiH6994of all the merciesהַחֲסָדִים֙ha.cha.sa.DimH2617,and of all the truthהָ֣אֱמֶ֔תha.'e.MetH571,which thou hast shewedעָשִׂ֖יתָ'a.Si.taH6213unto thy servantעַבְדֶּ֑ךָ'av.De.khaH5650;for with my staffבְמַקְלִ֗יve.mak.LiH4731I passed overעָבַ֙רְתִּי֙'a.Var.tiH5674this Jordanהַיַּרְדֵּ֣ןhai.yar.DenH3383;and now I am become twoלִשְׁנֵ֥יlish.NeiH8147bandsמַחֲנֽוֹת׃ma.cha.NotH4264.

11Deliver meהַצִּילֵ֥נִיha.tzi.Le.niH5337,I pray thee, from the handמִיַּ֥דmi.YadH3027of my brotherאָחִ֖י'a.ChiH251,from the handמִיַּ֣דmi.YadH3027of Esauעֵשָׂ֑ו'e.SavH6215:for I fearיָרֵ֤אya.Re'H3373him, lest he will comeיָב֣וֹאya.Vo'H935and smite meוְהִכַּ֔נִיve.hi.Ka.niH5221, andthe motherאֵ֖ם'emH517withעַל־'al-H5921the childrenבָּנִֽים׃ba.NimH1121.

12And thou saidstאָמַ֔רְתָּ'a.Mar.taH559,I will surelyהֵיטֵ֥בhei.TevH3190do thee goodאֵיטִ֖יב'ei.TivH3190,and makeוְשַׂמְתִּ֤יve.sam.TiH7760thy seedזַרְעֲךָ֙zar.'a.KhaH2233as the sandכְּח֣וֹלke.CholH2344of the seaהַיָּ֔םhai.YamH3220,which cannot be numberedיִסָּפֵ֖רyi.sa.FerH5608for multitudeמֵרֹֽב׃me.RoH7230.

13And he lodgedוַיָּ֥לֶןvai.Ya.lenH3885there that same nightבַּלַּ֣יְלָהba.Lay.lahH3915;and tookוַיִּקַּ֞חvai.yi.KachH3947of that which cameהַבָּ֧אha.Ba'H935to his handבְיָד֛וֹve.ya.DoH3027a presentמִנְחָ֖הmin.ChahH4503for Esauלְעֵשָׂ֥וle.'e.SavH6215his brotherאָחִֽיו׃'a.ChivH251;

14Two hundredמָאתַ֔יִםma.Ta.yimH3967she goatsעִזִּ֣ים'i.ZimH5795,and twentyעֶשְׂרִ֑ים'es.RimH6242he goatsוּתְיָשִׁ֖יםu.te.ya.ShimH8495,two hundredמָאתַ֖יִםma.Ta.yimH3967ewesרְחֵלִ֥יםre.che.LimH7353,and twentyעֶשְׂרִֽים׃'es.RimH6242ramsוְאֵילִ֥יםve.'ei.LimH352,

15Thirtyשְׁלֹשִׁ֑יםshe.lo.ShimH7970milchמֵינִיק֛וֹתmei.ni.KotH3243camelsגְּמַלִּ֧יםge.ma.LimH1581with their coltsוּבְנֵיהֶ֖םu.ve.nei.HemH1121,fortyאַרְבָּעִים֙'ar.ba.'ImH705kineפָּר֤וֹתpa.RotH6510,and tenעֲשָׂרָ֔ה'a.sa.RahH6235bullsוּפָרִ֣יםu.fa.RimH6499,twentyH6242she assesאֲתֹנֹ֣ת'a.to.NotH860,and tenעֲשָׂרָֽה׃'a.sa.RahH6235foalsוַעְיָרִ֖םva'.ya.RimH5895.

16And he deliveredוַיִּתֵּן֙vai.yi.TenH5414theminto the handבְּיַד־be.yad-H3027of his servantsעֲבָדָ֔יו'a.va.DavH5650,every droveH5739by themselves; and saidוַ֤יֹּאמֶרVai.yo.merH559unto his servantsעֲבָדָיו֙'a.va.DavH5650,Pass overעִבְר֣וּ'iv.RuH5674before meלְפָנַ֔יle.fa.NaiH6440,and putתָּשִׂ֔ימוּta.Si.muH7760a spaceוְרֶ֣וַחve.Re.vachH7305betwixtבֵּ֥יןbeinH996droveH5739andוּבֵ֥יןu.VeinH996droveH5739.

17And he commandedוַיְצַ֥וvay.TzavH6680the foremostהָרִאשׁ֖וֹןha.ri.ShonH7223,sayingH559,When Esauעֵשָׂ֣ו'e.SavH6215my brotherאָחִ֗י'a.ChiH251meeteth theeיִֽפְגָּשְׁךָ֞yif.ga.she.KhaH6298,and asketh theeוִשְׁאֵֽלְךָ֙vish.'e.le.KhaH7592,sayingH559, Whose artthou? and whither goestH3212thou? and whose arethese beforeH6440thee?

18Then thou shalt sayH559, They bethy servantלְעַבְדְּךָ֣le.'av.de.KhaH5650Jacob’sלְיַעֲקֹ֔בle.ya.'a.KoH3290; it isa presentמִנְחָ֥הmin.ChahH4503sentשְׁלוּחָ֔הshe.lu.ChahH7971unto my lordלַֽאדֹנִ֖יla.do.NiH113EsauH6215: and, behold, also he isbehind usאַחֲרֵֽינוּ׃'a.cha.Rei.nuH310.

19And soH1571commanded heוַיְצַ֞וvay.TzavH6680the secondהַשֵּׁנִ֗יha.she.NiH8145,and the thirdהַשְּׁלִישִׁ֔יha.she.li.ShiH7992,and all that followedהַהֹ֣לְכִ֔יםha.Ho.le.KhimH310 H1980the drovesהָעֲדָרִ֖יםha.'a.da.RimH5739,sayingH559,On this mannerכַּדָּבָ֤רka.da.VarH1697shall ye speakתְּדַבְּר֣וּןte.da.be.RunH1696unto EsauH6215,when ye findבְּמֹצַאֲכֶ֖םbe.mo.tza.'a.KhemH4672him.

20And say yeH559moreoverH1571,Behold, thy servantעַבְדְּךָ֥'av.de.KhaH5650Jacobיַעֲקֹ֖בya.'a.KoH3290isbehind usH310.For he saidH559,I will appeaseאֲכַפְּרָ֣ה'a.kha.pe.RahH3722himפָנָ֗יוfa.NavH6440with the presentבַּמִּנְחָה֙ba.min.ChahH4503that goethH1980before meלְפָנָ֔יle.fa.NaiH6440,and afterwardH310I will seeאֶרְאֶ֣ה'er.'EhH7200his faceפָנָ֔יוfa.NavH6440;peradventure he will acceptיִשָּׂ֥אyi.Sa'H5375of meפָנָֽי׃fa.NaiH6440.

21So wentH5674the presentH4503overH5674before himH6440:and himself lodgedלָ֥ןlanH3885that nightבַּלַּֽיְלָה־ba.lay.lah-H3915in the companyבַּֽמַּחֲנֶֽה׃Ba.ma.cha.NehH4264.

22And he rose upוַיָּ֣קָם׀vai.Ya.komH6965that nightH3915,and tookוַיִּקַּ֞חvai.yi.KachH3947his twoשְׁתֵּ֤יshe.TeiH8147wivesנָשָׁיו֙na.ShavH802,and his twoשְׁתֵּ֣יshe.TeiH8147womenservantsשִׁפְחֹתָ֔יוshif.cho.TavH8198,and his elevenאַחַ֥ד עָשָׂ֖ר'a.Chad 'a.SarH259 H6240sonsיְלָדָ֑יוye.la.DavH3206,and passed overH5674the fordמַעֲבַ֥רma.'a.VarH4569Jabbokיַבֹּֽק׃ya.BokH2999.

23And he took themH3947,and sent them overH5674the brookהַנָּ֑חַלha.Na.chalH5158,and sent overH5674that he had.

24And Jacobיַעֲקֹ֖בya.'a.KoH3290was leftוַיִּוָּתֵ֥רvai.yi.va.TerH3498alone; and there wrestledוַיֵּאָבֵ֥קvai.ye.'a.VekH79a manאִישׁ֙'ishH376with him until the breakingעֲל֥וֹתa.LotH5927of the dayהַשָּֽׁחַר׃ha.Sha.charH7837.

25And when he sawוַיַּ֗רְאvai.Yar'H7200that he prevailedיָכֹל֙ya.KholH3201not against him, he touchedוַיִּגַּ֖עvai.yi.Ga'H5060the hollow of his thighיְרֵכ֑וֹye.re.KhoH3409;and the hollowH3709of Jacob’sH3290thighיֶ֣רֶךְYe.rekhH3409was out of jointוַתֵּ֙קַע֙va.Te.ka'H3363,as he wrestledH79with him.

26And he saidוַיֹּ֣אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559,Let me goשַׁלְּחֵ֔נִיsha.le.Che.niH7971,for the dayהַשָּׁ֑חַרha.Sha.charH7837breakethעָלָ֖ה'a.LahH5927.And he saidוַיֹּ֙אמֶר֙vai.Yo.merH559,I will not let thee goאֲשַֽׁלֵּחֲךָ֔'a.sha.le.cha.KhaH7971,exceptאִם־'im-H518thou blessבֵּרַכְתָּֽנִי׃be.rakh.Ta.niH1288me.

27And he saidH559unto him, What isthy nameשְּׁמֶ֑ךָshe.Me.khaH8034?And he saidH559,Jacobיַעֲקֹֽב׃ya.'a.KoH3290.

28And he saidH559,Thy nameH8034shall be calledH559no more JacobH3290,but Israelיִשְׂרָאֵ֑לYis.ra.'ElH3478:for as a prince hast thou powerשָׂרִ֧יתָsa.Ri.taH8280with Godאֱלֹהִ֛ים'E.lo.HimH430and with menאֲנָשִׁ֖ים'a.na.ShimH582,and hast prevailedוַתּוּכָֽל׃va.tu.KhalH3201.

29And JacobH3290askedוַיִּשְׁאַ֣לvai.yish.'AlH7592him,and saidH559,Tellהַגִּֽידָה־ha.gi.dah-H5046me,I pray thee, thy nameH8034.And he saidH559, Wherefore isitזֶּ֖הzehH2088thatthou dost askתִּשְׁאַ֣לtish.'AlH7592after my nameH8034?And he blessedוַיְבָ֥רֶךְvay.Va.rekhH1288him there.

30And JacobH3290calledוַיִּקְרָ֧אvai.yik.Ra'H7121the nameH8034of the placeהַמָּק֖וֹםha.ma.KomH4725Penielפְּנִיאֵ֑לpe.ni.'ElH6439:for I have seenרָאִ֤יתִיra.'I.tiH7200Godאֱלֹהִים֙'E.lo.HimH430faceפָּנִ֣יםpa.NimH6440to faceפָּנִ֔יםpa.NimH6440,and my lifeנַפְשִֽׁי׃naf.ShiH5315is preservedוַתִּנָּצֵ֖לva.ti.na.TzelH5337.

31And as he passed overעָבַ֖ר'a.VarH5674PenuelH6439the sunהַשֶּׁ֔מֶשׁha.She.meshH8121roseוַיִּֽזְרַֽח־vai.yiz.rach-H2224upon him, and he haltedצֹלֵ֖עַtzo.Le.a'H6760upon his thighיְרֵכֽוֹ׃ye.re.KhoH3409.

32Therefore the childrenבְנֵֽי־ve.nei-H1121of Israelיִשְׂרָאֵ֜לYis.ra.'ElH3478eatיֹאכְל֨וּyo.khe.LuH398not ofthe sinewגִּ֣ידgidH1517which shrankהַנָּשֶׁ֗הha.na.ShehH5384, which isupon the hollowכַּ֣ףkafH3709of the thighH3409,unto this dayהַיּ֣וֹםhai.YomH3117:because he touchedנָגַע֙na.Ga'H5060the hollowבְּכַף־be.khaf-H3709of Jacob’sיַעֲקֹ֔בya.'a.KoH3290thighH3409in the sinewבְּגִ֖ידbe.GidH1517that shrankהַנָּשֶֽׁה׃ha.na.ShehH5384.
