Jacob Meets Esau

1Then Jacobיַעֲקֹ֜בya.'a.KoH3290liftedוַיִּשָּׂ֨אvai.yi.Sa'H5375his eyesעֵינָ֗יו'ei.NavH5869and lookedוַיַּרְא֙vai.yaR'H7200,and beholdוְהִנֵּ֣הve.hi.NehH2009,Esauעֵשָׂ֣ו'e.SavH6215was comingבָּ֔אBa'H935,and fourאַרְבַּ֥ע'ar.Ba'H702hundredמֵא֖וֹתme.'otH3967menאִ֑ישׁ'IshH376with him. So he dividedוַיַּ֣חַץvai.Ya.chatzH2673the childrenהַיְלָדִ֗יםhay.la.DimH3206amongH5921Leahלֵאָה֙le.'AhH3812and Rachelרָחֵ֔לra.ChelH7354and the twoשְׁתֵּ֥יshe.TeiH8147maidsהַשְּׁפָחֽוֹת׃ha.she.fa.ChotH8198.

2He putוַיָּ֧שֶׂםvai.Ya.semH7760the maidsהַשְּׁפָח֛וֹתha.she.fa.ChotH8198and their childrenיַלְדֵיהֶ֖ןyal.dei.HenH3206in frontרִֽאשֹׁנָ֑הri.sho.NahH7223,and Leahלֵאָ֤הle.'AhH3812and her childrenוִֽילָדֶ֙יהָ֙vi.la.Dei.haH3206nextאַחֲרֹנִ֔ים'a.cha.ro.NimH314,and Rachelרָחֵ֥לra.ChelH7354and Josephיוֹסֵ֖ףyo.SefH3130lastאַחֲרֹנִֽים׃'a.cha.ro.NimH314.

3But he himselfוְה֖וּאve.Hu'H1931passedעָבַ֣ר'a.VarH5674on aheadלִפְנֵיהֶ֑םlif.nei.HemH6440of them andbowedH7812downוַיִּשְׁתַּ֤חוּvai.yish.Ta.chuH7812to the groundאַ֙רְצָה֙'ar.tzahH776sevenשֶׁ֣בַעShe.va'H7651timesפְּעָמִ֔יםpe.'a.MimH6471,untilH5704he cameH5066nearH5066to his brotherאָחִֽיו׃'a.ChivH251.

4Then Esauעֵשָׂ֤ו'e.SavH6215ranוַיָּ֨רָץvai.Ya.rotzH7323to meetלִקְרָאתוֹ֙lik.ra.ToH7122him and embracedוַֽיְחַבְּקֵ֔הוּvay.cha.be.Ke.huH2263him, andfellוַיִּפֹּ֥לvai.yi.PolH5307on his neckצַוָּארָ֖יוtza.va.RavH6677and kissedוַׄיִּׄשָּׁׄקֵ֑ׄהׄוּׄvai.yi.sha.Ke.huH5401him, and they weptוַיִּבְכּֽוּ׃vai.yiv.KuH1058.

5He liftedוַיִּשָּׂ֣אvai.yi.Sa'H5375his eyesעֵינָ֗יו'ei.NavH5869and sawוַיַּ֤רְאvai.Yar'H7200the womenהַנָּשִׁים֙ha.na.ShimH802and the childrenהַיְלָדִ֔יםhay.la.DimH3206,and saidוַיֹּ֖אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559, “Whoמִי־mi-H4310are theseאֵ֣לֶּה'E.lehH428with you?” So he saidוַיֹּאמַ֕רvai.yo.MarH559, “The childrenהַיְלָדִ֕יםhay.la.DimH3206whomאֲשֶׁר־'a.Sher-H834Godאֱלֹהִ֖ים'E.lo.HimH430has graciouslyH2603givenH2603your servantעַבְדֶּֽךָ׃'av.De.khaH5650.”

6Then the maidsהַשְּׁפָח֛וֹתha.she.fa.ChotH8198cameH5066nearH5066with their childrenוְיַלְדֵיהֶ֖ןve.yal.dei.HenH3206,and they bowedH7812downוַתִּֽשְׁתַּחֲוֶֽיןָ׃va.Tish.ta.cha.Vei.naH7812.

7Leahלֵאָ֛הle.'AhH3812likewiseגַּם־gam-H1571cameH5066nearH5066with her childrenוִילָדֶ֖יהָvi.la.Dei.haH3206,and they bowedH7812downוַיִּֽשְׁתַּחֲו֑וּvai.yish.ta.cha.VuH7812;and afterwardוְאַחַ֗רve.'a.CharH310Josephיוֹסֵ֛ףyo.SefH3130cameH5066nearH5066with Rachelוְרָחֵ֖לve.ra.ChelH7354,and they bowedH7812downוַיִּֽשְׁתַּחֲוֽוּ׃vai.Yish.ta.cha.VuH7812.

8And he saidוַיֹּ֕אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559, “Whatמִ֥יmiH4310do you mean byallכָּל־kol-H3605thisהַזֶּ֖הha.ZehH2088companyהַמַּחֲנֶ֥הha.ma.cha.NehH4264whichאֲשֶׁ֣ר'a.SherH834I have metפָּגָ֑שְׁתִּיpa.Ga.she.tiH6298?”And he saidוַיֹּ֕אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559, “To findלִמְצֹא־lim.tzo'-H4672favorחֵ֖ןchenH2580in the sightבְּעֵינֵ֥יbe.'ei.NeiH5869of my lordאֲדֹנִֽי׃'a.do.NiH113.”

9But Esauעֵשָׂ֖ו'e.SavH6215saidוַיֹּ֥אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559, “I haveיֶשׁ־yesh-H3426plentyרָ֑בRavH7227,my brotherאָחִ֕י'a.ChiH251;let whatאֲשֶׁר־'a.Sher-H834you haveיְהִ֥יye.HiH1961be your own.”

10Jacobיַעֲקֹ֗בya.'a.KoH3290saidוַיֹּ֣אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559, “Noאַל־'al-H408,pleaseנָא֙na'H4994,ifאִם־'im-H518nowנָ֨אna'H4994I have foundמָצָ֤אתִיma.Tza.tiH4672favorחֵן֙chenH2580in your sightבְּעֵינֶ֔יךָbe.'ei.Nei.khaH5869,then takeוְלָקַחְתָּ֥ve.la.kach.TaH3947my presentמִנְחָתִ֖יmin.cha.TiH4503from my handמִיָּדִ֑יmi.ya.DiH3027,for I seeרָאִ֣יתִיra.'I.tiH7200your faceפָנֶ֗יךָfa.Nei.khaH6440as one seesכִּרְאֹ֛תkir.'OtH7200the faceפְּנֵ֥יpe.NeiH6440of Godאֱלֹהִ֖ים'E.lo.HimH430,and you have receivedH7521me favorablyוַתִּרְצֵֽנִי׃va.tir.Tze.niH7521.

11Pleaseנָ֤אna'H4994takeקַח־kach-H3947mygiftבִּרְכָתִי֙bir.kha.TiH1293whichאֲשֶׁ֣ר'a.SherH834has been broughtהֻבָ֣אתhu.VatH935to you,becauseכִּֽי־ki-H3588Godאֱלֹהִ֖ים'E.lo.HimH430has dealtH2603graciouslyH2603with me and becauseוְכִ֣יve.KhiH3588I haveיֶשׁ־yesh-H3426plentyכֹ֑לKholH3605.”Thus he urgedוַיִּפְצַר־vai.yif.tzar-H6484him and he tookוַיִּקָּֽח׃vai.yi.KachH3947it.

12ThenEsau saidוַיֹּ֖אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559, “Let us takeH5265our journeyH5265and goוְנֵלֵ֑כָהve.ne.Le.khahH1980,and I will goוְאֵלְכָ֖הve.'e.le.KhahH1980beforeלְנֶגְדֶּֽךָ׃le.neg.De.khaH5048you.”

13But he saidוַיֹּ֣אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559to him, “My lordאֲדֹנִ֤י'a.do.NiH113knowsיֹדֵ֙עַ֙yo.De.a'H3045that the childrenהַיְלָדִ֣יםhay.la.DimH3206are frailרַכִּ֔יםra.KimH7390and that the flocksוְהַצֹּ֥אןve.ha.TzonH6629and herdsוְהַבָּקָ֖רve.ha.ba.KarH1241which are nursingעָל֣וֹתa.LotH5763area careעָלָ֑י'a.LaiH5921to me. And if they are drivenH1849hardH1849oneאֶחָ֔ד'e.ChadH259dayי֣וֹםYomH3117,allכָּל־kol-H3605the flocksהַצֹּֽאן׃ha.TzonH6629will dieוָמֵ֖תוּva.Me.tuH4191.

14Pleaseנָ֥אna'H4994let my lordאֲדֹנִ֖י'a.do.NiH113passיַעֲבָר־ya.'a.vor-H5674on beforeלִפְנֵ֣יlif.NeiH6440his servantעַבְדּ֑וֹav.DoH5650,and I will proceedאֶתְנָהֲלָ֣ה'et.na.ha.LahH5095at my leisureלְאִטִּ֗יle.'i.TiH328,according to the paceלְרֶ֨גֶלle.Re.gelH7272of the cattleהַמְּלָאכָ֤הha.me.la.KhahH4399that are beforeלְפָנַי֙le.fa.NaiH6440me and according to the paceוּלְרֶ֣גֶלu.le.Re.gelH7272of the childrenהַיְלָדִ֔יםhay.la.DimH3206,untilעַ֛ד'adH5704 H834I comeאָבֹ֥א'a.Vo'H935to my lordאֲדֹנִ֖י'a.do.NiH113atSeirשֵׂעִֽירָה׃se.'I.rahH8165.”

15Esauעֵשָׂ֔ו'e.SavH6215saidוַיֹּ֣אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559, “Pleaseנָּ֣אna'H4994let me leaveאַצִּֽיגָה־'a.tzi.gah-H3322with you someמִן־min-H4480of the peopleהָעָ֖םha.'AmH5971whoאֲשֶׁ֣ר'a.SherH834are with me.” But he saidוַיֹּ֙אמֶר֙vai.Yo.merH559, “Whatלָ֣מָּהLa.mahH4100need is there?Let me findאֶמְצָא־'em.tza'-H4672favorחֵ֖ןchenH2580in the sightבְּעֵינֵ֥יbe.'ei.NeiH5869of my lordאֲדֹנִֽי׃'a.do.NiH113.”

16So Esauעֵשָׂ֛ו'e.SavH6215returnedוַיָּשָׁב֩vai.ya.ShavH7725that dayבַּיּ֨וֹםbai.YomH3117on his wayלְדַרְכּ֖וֹle.dar.KoH1870to Seirשֵׂעִֽירָה׃se.'I.rahH8165.

17Jacobוְיַעֲקֹב֙ve.ya.'a.KoH3290journeyedנָסַ֣עna.Sa'H5265toSuccothסֻכֹּ֔תָהsu.Ko.tahH5523,and builtוַיִּ֥בֶןvai.Yi.venH1129for himself a houseבָּ֑יִתBa.yitH1004and madeעָשָׂ֣ה'a.SahH6213boothsסֻכֹּ֔תsu.KotH5521for his livestockוּלְמִקְנֵ֙הוּ֙u.le.mik.Ne.huH4735;thereforeעַל־ כֵּ֛ן'al- kenH5921 H3651the placeהַמָּק֖וֹםha.ma.KomH4725is namedקָרָ֥א שֵׁם־ka.Ra' shem-H7121 H8034Succothסֻכּֽוֹת׃ סsu.KotH5523.

18Now Jacobיַעֲקֹ֨בya.'a.KoH3290cameוַיָּבֹא֩vai.ya.Vo'H935safelyשָׁלֵ֜םsha.LemH8003to the cityעִ֣יר'irH5892ofShechemשְׁכֶ֗םshe.KhemH7927,whichאֲשֶׁר֙'a.SherH834is in the landבְּאֶ֣רֶץbe.'E.retzH776of Canaanכְּנַ֔עַןke.Na.'anH3667,when he cameבְּבֹא֖וֹbe.vo.'OH935fromPaddan-aramמִפַּדַּ֣ןmi.pa.DanH6307,and campedוַיִּ֖חַןvai.Yi.chanH2583beforeפְּנֵ֥יpe.NeiH6440the cityהָעִֽיר׃ha.'IrH5892.

19He boughtוַיִּ֜קֶןvai.Yi.kenH7069the pieceH2513of landH2513whereאֲשֶׁ֤ר שָׁם֙'a.Sher shamH834 H8033he had pitchedנָֽטָה־na.tah-H5186his tentאָהֳל֔וֹ'o.ho.LoH168from the handמִיַּ֥דmi.YadH3027of the sonsבְּנֵֽי־be.nei-H1121of Hamorחֲמ֖וֹרcha.MorH2544,Shechem’sשְׁכֶ֑םshe.KhemH7927fatherאֲבִ֣י'a.ViH1,for one hundredבְּמֵאָ֖הbe.me.'AhH3967piecesקְשִׂיטָֽה׃ke.si.TahH7192of moneyH7192.

20Then he erectedוַיַּצֶּב־vai.ya.tzev-H5324thereשָׁ֖םshamH8033an altarמִזְבֵּ֑חַmiz.Be.achH4196and calledוַיִּ֨קְרָא־vai.Yik.ra'-H7121itEl-Elohe-IsraelH415.
