Numbers 21
1When the CanaaniteH3669 kingH4428 of AradH6166, who livedH3427 in the NegevH5045, heardH8085 thatH3588 IsraelH3478 was comingH935 along the roadH1870 to AtharimH871, he attackedH3898 IsraelH3478 and capturedH7617 someH4480 prisonersH7628. 2So IsraelH3478 madeH5087 a vowH5088 to the LORDH3068H559: “IfH518 You will deliverH5414 thisH2088 peopleH5971 into our handsH3027, we will devoteH2763 their cities to destructionH5892.1”
3And the LORDH3068 heardH8085 Israel’sH3478 pleaH6963 and delivered upH5414 the CanaanitesH3669. Israel devotedH2763 themH853 andH853 their cities to destructionH5892; so they namedH7121H8034 the placeH4725 HormahH2767.2
The Bronze Serpent
4Then they set outH5265 from MountH2022 HorH2023 along the routeH1870 to the RedH5488 SeaH3220,3 in order to bypassH5437 the landH776 of EdomH123. But the peopleH5971 grew impatientH7114H5315 on the journeyH1870 5and spokeH1696 against GodH430 and against MosesH4872: “WhyH4100 have you led us upH5927 out of EgyptH4714 to dieH4191 in the wildernessH4057H3588? There is noH369 breadH3899H369 or waterH4325, and weH5315 detestH6973 this wretchedH7052 foodH3899!”
6So the LORDH3068 sentH7971 venomousH8314 snakesH5175 amongH5971 the people, and manyH7227 of the IsraelitesH5971H3478 were bittenH5391 and diedH4191.
7Then the peopleH5971 cameH935 toH413 MosesH4872 and saidH559, “We have sinnedH2398 byH3588 speakingH1696 against the LORDH3068 and against you. IntercedeH6419 withH413 the LORDH3068 so He will takeH5493 the snakesH5175 away from usH5921.” So MosesH4872 intercededH6419 forH1157 the peopleH5971.
8Then the LORDH3068 saidH559 toH413 MosesH4872, “MakeH6213 a fiery serpentH8314 and mountH7760 itH853 onH5921 a poleH5251H1961. When anyoneH3605 who is bittenH5391 looks at itH7200, he will liveH2421.” 9So MosesH4872 madeH6213 a bronzeH5178 snakeH5175 and mountedH7760 it onH5921 a poleH5251H1961. IfH518 anyone whoH376 was bittenH5391 lookedH5027 atH413H5175 the bronzeH5178 snakeH5175, he would liveH2421.
The Journey to Moab
10Then the IsraelitesH1121H3478 set outH5265 and campedH2583 at ObothH88. 11They journeyedH5265 from ObothH88 and campedH2583 at Iye-abarimH5863 in the wildernessH4057 oppositeH5921 MoabH4124 to the eastH4217H8121. 12From thereH8033 they setH5265 out and campedH2583 in the ValleyH5158 of ZeredH2218. 13From thereH8033 they moved onH5265 and campedH2583 on the other sideH5676 of the ArnonH769, in the wildernessH4057 that extendsH3318 into the AmoriteH567 territoryH1366.
NowH3588 the ArnonH769 is the borderH1366 betweenH996 the MoabitesH4124 andH996 the AmoritesH567. 14ThereforeH5921H3651 it is statedH559 in the BookH5612 of the WarsH4421 of the LORDH3068:
16From thereH8033 they went on to BeerH876H1931,4 the wellH875 whereH834 the LORDH3068 saidH559 to MosesH4872, “GatherH622 the peopleH5971 so that I may giveH5414 them waterH4325.” 17ThenH227 IsraelH3478 sangH7891 thisH2063 songH7892:
From the wildernessH4057 the Israelites went on to MattanahH4980, 19and from MattanahH4980 to NahalielH5160, and from NahalielH5160 to BamothH1120, 20and from BamothH1120 to the valleyH1516 in MoabH4124 where the topH7218 of PisgahH6449 overlooksH8259H5921H6440 the wastelandH3452.5
The Defeat of Sihon
(Deuteronomy 2:24–37)
21Then IsraelH3478 sentH7971 messengersH4397 toH413 SihonH5511 kingH4428 of the AmoritesH567, sayingH559, 22“Let us passH5674 through your landH776. We will notH3808 turn aside intoH5186 any fieldH7704 or vineyardH3754, or drinkH8354 waterH4325 from any wellH875. We will stay onH1980 the King’sH4428 HighwayH1870 untilH5704 we have passed throughH5674 your territoryH1366.”
23But SihonH5511 would notH3808 letH5414 IsraelH3478 passH5674 through his territoryH1366. Instead, heH5511 gatheredH622 his wholeH3605 armyH5971 and went outH3318 to confrontH7122 IsraelH3478 in the wildernessH4057. When he cameH935 to JahazH3096,6 he foughtH3898 against IsraelH3478. 24And IsraelH3478 put himH5221 to the swordH6310H2719 and took possession ofH3423 his landH776, from the ArnonH769 toH5704 the JabbokH2999—but only up toH5704 the borderH1366 of the AmmonitesH1121H5983, becauseH3588 it was fortifiedH5794.7
25IsraelH3478 capturedH3947 allH3605 the citiesH5892H428 of the AmoritesH567 and occupiedH3427 them, including HeshbonH2809 and allH3605 its villagesH1323. 26HeshbonH2809 was the cityH5892 of SihonH5511 kingH4428 of the AmoritesH567, whoH1931 had foughtH3898 against the formerH7223 kingH4428 of MoabH4124 and takenH3947 allH3605 his landH776H3027 asH5704 far as the ArnonH769. 27That is whyH5921H3651 the poetsH4911 sayH559:
The Defeat of Og
(Deuteronomy 3:1–11)
31So IsraelH3478 livedH3427 in the landH776 of the AmoritesH567. 32After MosesH4872 had sentH7971 spiesH7270 to JazerH3270, Israel capturedH3920 its villagesH1323 and drove outH3423 the AmoritesH567 whoH834 were thereH8033.
33Then they turnedH6437 and went upH5927 the roadH1870 to BashanH1316, and OgH5747 kingH4428 of BashanH1316 and his wholeH3605 armyH5971 came outH3318 to meetH7122 themH1931 in battleH4421 at EdreiH154.
34But the LORDH3068 saidH559 toH413 MosesH4872, “Do notH408 fear himH3372, forH3588 I have deliveredH5414 himH853 into your handH3027, along withH853 allH3605 his peopleH5971 and his landH776. DoH6213 to him asH834 you didH6213 to SihonH5511 kingH4428 of the AmoritesH567, whoH834 livedH3427 in HeshbonH2809.”
35So they struck downH5221 Og, along withH853 his sonsH1121 and his wholeH3605 armyH5971, untilH5704 noH1115 remnant was leftH7604. And they took possession ofH3423 his landH776.
