16TheseH428 were the namesH8034 of the menH582 MosesH4872 sentH7971 to spy outH8446 the landH776; and MosesH4872 gaveH7121 to HosheaH1954 sonH1121 of NunH5126 the name JoshuaH3091.

17When MosesH4872 sentH7971 themH853 to spy outH8446 the landH776 of CanaanH3667, he toldH559 themH413, “Go upH5927 through the NegevH5045 andH5927 into the hill countryH2022. 18SeeH7200 whatH4100 the landH776 is likeH1931 andH853 whether its peopleH5971 are strongH2389H1931 or weakH7504, fewH4592H1931 orH518 manyH7227. 19Is the landH776 whereH834 theyH1931 liveH3427 goodH2896 orH518 badH7451H4100? 21So they went upH5927 and spied outH8446 the landH776 from the WildernessH4057 of ZinH6790 asH5704 far as RehobH7340, toward Lebo-hamathH935H2574. 22They went upH5927 through the NegevH5045 and cameH935 toH5704 HebronH2275, whereH8033 AhimanH289, SheshaiH8344, and TalmaiH8526, the descendantsH3211 of AnakH6061, dwelledH2275. It had been builtH1129 sevenH7651 yearsH8141 beforeH6440 ZoanH6814 in EgyptH4714.

23When they cameH935 toH5704 the ValleyH5158 of EshcolH812,2 they cut downH3772H8033 a branchH2156 with a singleH259 clusterH811 of grapesH6025, which they carriedH5375 on a poleH4132 between two menH8147. They also took someH4480 pomegranatesH7416H4480 and figsH8384. 24Because ofH5921H182 the clusterH811 of grapes the IsraelitesH1121H3478 cutH3772 thereH8033, thatH1931 placeH4725 was calledH7121 the ValleyH5158 of EshcolH812.

The Reports of the Spies

25AfterH7093 fortyH705 daysH3117 the men returnedH7725 from spying outH8446 the landH776, 26and they went backH1980H935 toH413 MosesH4872, AaronH175H413, and the wholeH3605 congregationH5712H1121 of IsraelH3478 inH413 the WildernessH4057 of ParanH6290 at KadeshH6946. They brought backH7725 a reportH1697 for the wholeH3605 congregationH5712 and showedH7200 themH853 the fruitH6529 of the landH776.

27And they gave this accountH5608 toH559 Moses: “We wentH935 intoH413 the landH776 to whichH834 you sent usH7971, and indeedH1571, itH1931 is flowingH2100 with milkH2461 and honeyH1706. Here isH2088 some of its fruitH6529! 28NeverthelessH657H3588, the peopleH5971 livingH3427 in the landH776 are strongH5794, and the citiesH5892H1219 are largeH1419 and fortifiedH3966. We evenH1571 sawH7200 the descendantsH3211 of AnakH6061 thereH8033. 29The AmalekitesH6002 liveH3427 in the landH776 of the NegevH5045; the HittitesH2850, JebusitesH2983, and AmoritesH567 liveH3427 in the hill countryH2022; and the CanaanitesH3669 liveH3427 byH5921 the seaH3220 and alongH5921H3027 the JordanH3383.”

30Then CalebH3612 quietedH2013 the peopleH5971 beforeH413 MosesH4872 and saidH559, “We must go upH5927 and take possession ofH3423 the land, forH3588 we can certainly conquerH3201 it!”

31But the menH582 whoH834 had gone upH5927 with himH5973 repliedH559, “We cannotH3808H3201 go upH5927 againstH413 the peopleH5971, forH3588 theyH1931 are strongerH2389 than we areH4480!”

32So they gaveH3318 the IsraelitesH1121 a bad reportH1681H3478H559 about the landH776 thatH834 they had spied outH8446: “The landH776 we exploredH5674H8446 devoursH398 its inhabitantsH3427H1931, and allH3605 the peopleH5971 we sawH7200 thereH8432 are great in statureH582H4060. 33We even sawH7200 the NephilimH5303 thereH8033—the descendantsH1121 of AnakH6061 that come fromH4480 the NephilimH5303! We seemedH1961 like grasshoppersH2284 in our own sightH5869, and we must have seemedH1961H5869 the same to themH3651!”
