Arad Conquered
1When the CanaaniteH3669, the kingH4428 of 1AradH6166, who livedH3427 in the 2NegevH5045, heardH8085 that IsraelH3478 was comingH935 by the wayH1870 of AtharimH871, he foughtH3898 against IsraelH3478 and tookH7617 someH4480 of them captiveH7628. 2So 3IsraelH3478 madeH5087 a vowH5088 to the LordH3068 and saidH559, “IfH518 You will indeedH5414 handH3027H5414 overH5414 thisH2088 peopleH5971 to me, then I will 4utterlyH2763 destroyH2763 their citiesH5892.” 3The LordH3068 heardH8085 the voiceH6963 of IsraelH3478 and turnedH5414 overH5414 the CanaanitesH3669; then they 5utterlyH2763 destroyedH2763 them and their citiesH5892. And the placeH4725 was namedH8034H7121 67HormahH2767.
4Then they setH5265 outH5265 from MountH2022 HorH2023 by the wayH1870 of the 8RedH5488 SeaH3220, to 9goH5437 aroundH5437 the landH776 of EdomH112; and the 10peopleH5315H5971 becameH7114 impatientH7114 because of the journeyH1870. 5So the peopleH5971 spokeH1696 against GodH430 and MosesH4872: “11WhyH4100 have you broughtH5927 us upH5927 from EgyptH4714 to dieH4191 in the wildernessH4057? For thereH369 isH369 noH369 12foodH3899 and noH369 waterH4325, and 1314we are disgustedH6973 with 15this miserableH7052 foodH3899.”
The Bronze Serpent
616Then the LordH3068 sentH7971 fieryH8314 serpentsH8314 among the peopleH5971 and 17they bitH5391 the peopleH5971, so that 18manyH7227 peopleH5971 of IsraelH3478 diedH4191. 719So the peopleH5971 cameH935 to MosesH4872 and saidH559, “We have sinnedH2398, becauseH3588 we have spokenH1696 against the LordH3068 and against you; 20intercedeH6419 with the LordH3068, that He will removeH5493 the serpentsH5175 from us.” And MosesH4872 intercededH6419 for the peopleH5971. 8Then the LordH3068 saidH559 to MosesH4872, “21MakeH6213 a 22fieryH8314 serpent, and putH7760 it on a flagH5251 pole; and it shall comeH1961 aboutH1961, that everyoneH3605 who is bittenH5391, and looksH7200 at it, will liveH2421.” 9So MosesH4872 madeH6213 a 23bronzeH5178 serpentH5175 and putH7760 it on the flagH5251 pole; and it cameH1961 aboutH1961, that ifH518 a serpentH5175 bitH5391 someoneH376, and he lookedH5027 at the bronzeH5178 serpentH5175, he livedH2421.
1024Now the sonsH1121 of IsraelH3478 movedH5265 outH5265 and campedH2583 in ObothH88. 11Then they journeyedH5265 from ObothH88 and campedH2583 at Iye-abarimH5863, in the wildernessH4057 whichH834 is oppositeH5921H6440 MoabH4124, to the 25eastH4217H8121. 1226From thereH8033 they setH5265 outH5265 and campedH2583 in 27WadiH5158 ZeredH2218. 13From thereH8033 they journeyedH5265 and campedH2583 on the otherH5676 sideH5676 of the ArnonH769, whichH834 is in the wildernessH4057 that comesH3318 outH3318 of the borderH1366 of the AmoritesH567; 28for the ArnonH769 is the borderH1366 of MoabH4124, betweenH996 MoabH4124 and the AmoritesH567. 14For thatH3651 reasonH3651 it is saidH559 in the BookH5612 of the WarsH4421 of the LordH3068, “WahebH2052 in SuphahH5492, And the 29wadisH5158 of the ArnonH769,15And the slopeH793 of the wadisH5158 That extendsH5186 to the siteH7675 of 30ArH6144, And leansH8172 to the borderH1366 of MoabH4124.”
1631From thereH8033 they continued to 32BeerH876, that is the wellH875 whereH834 the LordH3068 saidH559 to MosesH4872, “AssembleH622 the peopleH5971, that I may giveH5414 them waterH4325.”
1733ThenH227 IsraelH3478 sangH7891 thisH2088 songH7892: “SpringH5927 upH5927, O wellH875! SingH6031 to it!18The wellH875, which the leadersH8269 dugH2658, Which the noblesH5081 of the peopleH5971 hollowedH3738 outH3738, With the scepterH2710 and with their staffsH4938.” And from the wildernessH4057 they continued to MattanahH4980, 19and from MattanahH4980 to NahalielH5160, and from NahalielH5160 to BamothH1120, 20and from BamothH1120 to the valleyH1516 that is in the landH7704 of MoabH4124, at the topH7218 of PisgahH6449, which overlooksH5921H6440H8259 the 34desertH3452.
Two Victories
2135Then IsraelH3478 sentH7971 messengersH4397 to SihonH5511, kingH4428 of the AmoritesH567, sayingH559, 22“36Let me passH5674 through your landH776. We will not turnH5186 offH5186 into fieldH7704 or vineyardH3754; we will not drinkH8354 waterH4325 from wellsH875. We will goH1980 by the king’sH4428 roadH1870 untilH5704H834 we have passedH5674 throughH5674 your borderH1366.” 2337But SihonH5511 would not permitH5414 IsraelH3478 to passH5674 through his borderH1366. Instead, SihonH5511 gatheredH622 allH3605 his peopleH5971 and wentH3318 outH3318 againstH7122 IsraelH3478 in the wildernessH4057, and cameH935 to 38JahazH3096 and foughtH3898 against IsraelH3478. 24Then 39IsraelH3478 struckH5221 him with the edgeH6310 of the swordH2719, and tookH3423 possessionH3423 of his landH776 from the ArnonH769 to the JabbokH2999, as farH5704 as the sonsH1121 of AmmonH5983; for the 40borderH1366 of the sonsH1121 of AmmonH5983 was 41JazerH3270. 25IsraelH3478 tookH3947 allH3605 theseH428 citiesH5892, and 42IsraelH3478 livedH3427 in allH3605 the citiesH5892 of the AmoritesH567, in HeshbonH2809 and in allH3605 her 43villagesH1323. 26For HeshbonH2809 was the cityH5892 of SihonH5511, kingH4428 of the AmoritesH567, whoH1931 had foughtH3898 against the formerH7223 kingH4428 of MoabH4124 and had takenH3947 allH3605 his landH776 out of his handH3027, as farH5704 as the ArnonH769. 27For thatH3651 reasonH3651 those who useH4911 proverbsH4911 sayH559, “ComeH935 to HeshbonH2809! Let it be builtH1129! So let the cityH5892 of SihonH5511 be establishedH3559.2844For a fireH784 spreadH3318 from HeshbonH2809, A flameH3852 from the townH7151 of SihonH5511; It devouredH398 45ArH6144 of MoabH4124, The 4647dominantH1167 48heightsH1181 of the ArnonH769.2949WoeH188 to you, MoabH4124! You are destroyedH6, peopleH5971 of 50ChemoshH3645! 51He has givenH5414 his sonsH1121 as fugitivesH6412, 52And his daughtersH1323 into captivityH7622, To an AmoriteH567 kingH4428, SihonH5511.30But we have shotH3384 them downH3384 with arrows, HeshbonH2809 is destroyedH6 as farH5704 as 53DibonH1769, Then we have laidH8074 wasteH8074 as farH5704 as NophahH5302, WhichH834 reaches to MedebaH4311.”
31So IsraelH3478 livedH3427 in the landH776 of the AmoritesH567. 32Now MosesH4872 sentH7971 men to spyH7270 outH7270 54JazerH3270, and they capturedH3920 its villagesH1323 and dispossessedH3423 the AmoritesH567 whoH834 were thereH8033.
3355Then they turnedH6437 and wentH5927 upH5927 by the wayH1870 of BashanH1316, and OgH5747 the kingH4428 of BashanH1316 wentH3318 outH3318 againstH7125 them 56with allH3605 his peopleH5971, for battleH4421 at 57EdreiH154. 34But the LordH3068 saidH559 to MosesH4872, “58Do not fearH3372 him, for I have handedH5414H3027 him overH5414 to you, and allH3605 his peopleH5971 and his landH776; and you shall doH6213 to him as you didH6213 to SihonH5511, kingH4428 of the AmoritesH567, whoH834 livedH3427 in HeshbonH2809.” 35So 59they 60killedH5221 him and his sonsH1121 and allH3605 his peopleH5971, untilH5704 there was noH1115 survivorH8300 leftH7604; and they tookH3423 possessionH3423 of his landH776.
