Numbers 5

(Leviticus 13:1–46)

1Then the LORDH3068 saidH1696 toH413 MosesH4872H559, 2“CommandH6680 the IsraelitesH1121H3478 to send awayH7971 fromH4480 the campH4264 anyoneH3605 with a skin diseaseH6879,1 anyoneH3605 who has a bodily dischargeH2100, and anyoneH3605 who is defiledH2931 by a dead bodyH5315. 3You must send awayH7971H413 maleH2145 andH5704 female alikeH5347; send themH7971 outsideH2351 the campH4264 so they will notH3808 defileH2930 their campH4264, whereH834 IH589 dwellH7931 among themH8432.”

4So the IsraelitesH1121H3478 didH6213 thisH3651, sendingH7971 such people outsideH413H2351 the campH4264. They didH6213 just asH834 the LORDH3068H413 had instructedH1696 MosesH4872H3651.

Confession and Restitution

(Luke 19:1–10)

5And the LORDH3068 saidH1696 toH413 MosesH4872H559, 6“TellH1696H413 the Israelites thatH1121H3478 whenH3588 a manH376 orH176 womanH802 actsH4603 unfaithfullyH4604 against the LORDH3068 by committingH6213 anyH3605 sinH2403 against anotherH120, thatH1931 personH5315 is guiltyH816 7and must confessH3034 the sinH2403 he has committedH6213. He must make full restitutionH7725, addH3254 a fifthH2549 to its valueH5921, and give all thisH5414 to the oneH834 he has wrongedH816.

8But ifH518 the manH376 has noH369 relativeH1350 to whom restitution can be made forH7725 the wrongH817H413, the restitutionH817H7725 belongs to the LORDH3068 and must be given to the priestH3548 along withH905 the ramH352 of atonementH3725, by whichH834 the atonement is madeH3722 for himH5921.

9EveryH3605 sacredH6944 contributionH8641H3605 the IsraelitesH1121H3478 bringH7126 to the priestH3548 shall belongH1961 to him. 10Each man’sH376 sacred giftsH6944 are his own, but whateverH834 he givesH5414 to the priestH3548 will belong toH1961 the priest.”

The Adultery Test

11Then the LORDH3068 saidH1696 toH413 MosesH4872H559, 12“SpeakH1696 toH413 the IsraelitesH1121H3478 and tell them thatH559H413 ifH3588 any man’sH376 wifeH802 goes astrayH7847 and is unfaithfulH4603 to him 13by sleeping withH7901 another manH376H854H7902H2233, and it is concealedH5956 fromH5869 her husbandH376 and herH1931 impurityH2930 is undetectedH5641 (since there is noH369 witness against herH5707 and sheH1931 was notH3808 caught in the actH8610), 14and if a feelingH7307 of jealousyH7068 comes overH5674 her husband and he suspectsH7065 his wifeH802 whoH1931 has defiled herselfH2930—orH176 if a feelingH7307 of jealousyH7068 comes overH5674 himH5921 and he suspectsH7065 herH802 even though sheH1931 has notH3808 defiled herselfH2930— 15thenH376 he is to bringH935 his wifeH802 toH413 the priestH3548.

He must also bringH935 for herH5921 an offeringH7133 of a tenthH6224 of an ephahH374 of barleyH8184 flourH7058.2 He is notH3808 to pourH3332 oilH8081H3808 overH5921 it or putH5414 frankincenseH3828 on itH5921, becauseH3588 itH1931 is a grain offeringH4503 for jealousyH7068, an offeringH4503 of memorialH2146 as a reminderH2142 of iniquityH5771.

16The priestH3548 is to bring the wife forwardH7126 and have her standH5975 beforeH6440 the LORDH3068. 17ThenH3548 he is to takeH3947 some holyH6918 waterH4325 in a clayH2789 jarH3627 and putH5414 some ofH4480 the dustH6083 from the tabernacleH4908 floorH7172 intoH413 the waterH4325.

18After the priestH3548 has the womanH802 standH5975 beforeH6440 the LORDH3068, he is to let downH6544 herH802 hairH7218 and placeH5414 inH5921 her handsH3709 the grain offeringH4503 of memorialH2146, whichH1931 is the grain offeringH4503 for jealousyH7068. The priestH3548 isH1961 to holdH3027 the bitterH4751 waterH4325 that brings a curseH779. 19AndH3548 he is to put the woman under oathH7650 and sayH559 toH413 herH802, ‘IfH518 no otherH3808 manH376H854 has slept with youH7901 andH518 you have notH3808 gone astrayH7847 and become defiledH2932 while underH8478 your husband’s authorityH376, may you be immuneH5352 to thisH428 bitterH4751 waterH4325 that brings a curseH779. 20But ifH3588 youH859 have gone astrayH7847 while underH8478 your husband’s authorityH376 andH3588 have defiled yourselfH2930 and lainH5414 carnallyH7903 with a manH376 other thanH1107 your husbandH376’— 21and the priestH3548 shall have the womanH802 swearH7650 under the oathH7621 of the curseH423—‘then may the LORDH3068 makeH5414 youH853 an attestedH423 curseH7621 amongH8432 your peopleH5971 by makingH5414 your thighH3409 shrivelH5307 and your bellyH990 swellH6639. 22May thisH428 waterH4325 that brings a curseH779 enterH935 your stomachH4578 and cause your bellyH990 to swellH6638 and your thighH3409 to shrivelH5307.’

Then the womanH802 is to sayH559, ‘AmenH543, AmenH543.’

23And the priestH3548 shall writeH3789 theseH428 cursesH423 on a scrollH5612 and wash them offH4229 intoH413 the bitterH4751 waterH4325. 24He is to have the womanH802 drinkH8248 the bitterH4751 waterH4325 that brings a curseH779, and itH4325 will enterH935 her and may cause her bitterH4751 sufferingH779. 25The priestH3548 shall takeH3947 fromH802 her handH3027 the grain offeringH4503 for jealousyH7068, waveH5130 it beforeH6440 the LORDH3068, and bringH7126 it toH413 the altarH4196. 26Then the priestH3548 is to take a handfulH7061 ofH4480 the grain offeringH4503 as a memorial portionH234 and burnH6999 it on the altarH4196; after thatH310 he is to have the womanH802 drinkH8248 the waterH4325.

27When he has made her drinkH8248 the waterH4325, ifH518 she has defiled herselfH2930 and been unfaithfulH4603H4604 to her husbandH376, then the waterH4325 that brings a curseH779 will enterH935 her and cause bitter sufferingH4751; her bellyH990 will swellH6638, her thighH3409 will shrivelH5307, and she will becomeH1961H802 accursedH423 amongH7130 her peopleH5971. 28But ifH518 the womanH802 has notH3808 defiled herselfH2930 and is cleanH2889, sheH1931 will be unaffectedH5352 and able to conceiveH2232 childrenH2233.

29ThisH2063 is the lawH8451 of jealousyH7068 whenH834 a wifeH802 goes astrayH7847 and defiles herselfH2930 while underH8478 her husband’s authorityH376, 30orH176 whenH834 a feelingH7307 of jealousyH7068 comes overH5674H5921 a husbandH376 and he suspectsH7065 his wifeH802. He is to have the womanH802 standH5975 beforeH6440 the LORDH3068, and the priestH3548 is to applyH6213 to her thisH2063 entireH3605 lawH8451. 31The husbandH376 will be freeH5352 from guiltH5771, but theH1931 womanH802 shall bearH5375 herH853 iniquityH5771.”
