Numbers 13

Spies View the Land

1Then 1the LordH3068 spokeH1696 to MosesH4872 sayingH559, 2“2SendH7971 out for yourself menH376 so that they may spyH8446 out the landH776 of CanaanH3667, whichH834 I am going to giveH5414 to the sonsH1121 of IsraelH3478; you shall sendH7971 a manH376 from eachH376H259 of their fathers’H1 tribesH4294, everyH3605 oneH3605 a leaderH5387 among them.” 3So MosesH4872 sentH7971 them from the wildernessH4057 of ParanH6290 at the 3commandH6310 of the LordH3068, allH3605 of them menH376 who were headsH7218 of the sonsH1121 of IsraelH3478. 4TheseH428 then were their namesH8034: from the tribeH4294 of ReubenH7205, ShammuaH8051 the sonH1121 of ZaccurH2139; 5from the tribeH4294 of SimeonH8095, ShaphatH8202 the sonH1121 of HoriH2752; 6from the tribeH4294 of JudahH3063, 4CalebH3612 the sonH1121 of JephunnehH3312; 7from the tribeH4294 of IssacharH3485, IgalH3008 the sonH1121 of JosephH3130; 8from the tribeH4294 of EphraimH669, 5HosheaH1954 the sonH1121 of NunH5126; 9from the tribeH4294 of BenjaminH1144, PaltiH6406 the sonH1121 of RaphuH7505; 10from the tribeH4294 of ZebulunH2074, GaddielH1427 the sonH1121 of SodiH5476; 11from the tribeH4294 of JosephH3130, from the tribeH4294 of ManassehH4519, GaddiH3426 the sonH1121 of SusiH5485; 12from the tribeH4294 of DanH1835, AmmielH5988 the sonH1121 of GemalliH1582; 13from the tribeH4294 of AsherH836, SethurH5639 the sonH1121 of MichaelH4317; 14from the tribeH4294 of NaphtaliH5321, NahbiH5147 the sonH1121 of VophsiH2058; 15from the tribeH4294 of GadH1410, GeuelH1345 the sonH1121 of MachiH4352. 16TheseH428 are the namesH8034 of the menH376 whomH834 MosesH4872 sentH7971 to spyH8446 out the landH776; but MosesH4872 calledH7121 6HosheaH1954 the sonH1121 of NunH5126, JoshuaH3091.

17When MosesH4872 sentH7971 them to spyH8446 out the landH776 of CanaanH3667, he saidH559 to them, “GoH5927 up 7thereH2088 into 8the 9NegevH5045; then goH5927 up into the hillH2022 countryH2022. 18SeeH7200 whatH4100 the landH776 is like, and whether the peopleH5971 who liveH3427 in it are strongH2389 or weakH7504, whether they are fewH4592 orH518 manyH7227. 19HowH4100 is the landH776 in whichH834 they liveH3427, is it goodH2896 orH518 badH7451? And howH4100 are the citiesH5892 in whichH834H1992 they liveH3427, are they 10like open campsH4264 orH518 with fortificationsH4013? 2011HowH4100 is the landH776, is it fatH8082 orH518 leanH7330? Are thereH3426 treesH6086 in it orH518 not? 12MakeH2388 an 13effortH2388 then to getH3947 someH4480 of the fruitH6529 of the landH776.” Now the timeH3117 was the timeH3117 of the firstH1061 ripeH1061 grapesH6025.

21So they wentH5927 up and spiedH8446 out the landH776 from 14the wildernessH4057 of ZinH6790 as farH5704 as RehobH7340, 1516at Lebo-hamathH935. 22When they had goneH5927 up into 17the NegevH5045, 18they cameH935 to HebronH2275 whereH8033 19AhimanH289, SheshaiH8344 and TalmaiH8526, the 20descendantsH3211 of 21AnakH6061 were. (Now HebronH2275 was builtH1129 sevenH7651 yearsH8141 beforeH6440 22ZoanH6814 in EgyptH4714.)

23Then they cameH935 to the 23valleyH5158 of 2425EshcolH812 and from thereH8033 cutH3772 downH3772 a branchH2156 with a singleH259 clusterH811 of grapesH6025; and they carriedH5375 it on a poleH4132 between twoH8147 men, with someH4480 of the pomegranatesH7416 and the figsH8384. 24That placeH4725 was calledH7121 the valleyH5158 of 26EshcolH812, becauseH5921H182 of the clusterH811 whichH834 the sonsH1121 of IsraelH3478 cutH3772 downH3772 from thereH8033.

The Spies’ Reports

25When they returnedH7725 from spyingH8446 out the landH776, at the endH7093 of fortyH705 daysH3117, 26they proceededH1980 to comeH935 to MosesH4872 and AaronH175 and to allH3605 the congregationH5712 of the sonsH1121 of IsraelH3478 27in the wildernessH4057 of ParanH6290, at 28KadeshH6946; and they broughtH7725 backH7725 wordH1697 to them and to allH3605 the congregationH5712 and showedH7200 them the fruitH6529 of the landH776. 27Thus they toldH5608 him, and saidH559, “We wentH935 in to the landH776 whereH834 you sentH7971 us; and 29it certainlyH1571 does flowH2100 with milkH2461 and honeyH1706, and 30thisH2088 is its fruitH6529. 28NeverthelessH657H3588, 31the peopleH5971 who liveH3427 in the landH776 are strongH5794, and the citiesH5892 are fortifiedH1219 and veryH3966 largeH1419; and moreoverH1571, we sawH7200 32the 33descendantsH3211 of AnakH6061 thereH8033. 29AmalekH6002 is livingH3427 in the landH776 of 34the NegevH5045 and the HittitesH2850 and the JebusitesH2983 and 35the AmoritesH567 are livingH3427 in the hillH2022 countryH2022, and 36the CanaanitesH3669 are livingH3427 by the seaH3220 and by the sideH3027 of the JordanH3383.”

30Then CalebH3612 quietedH2013 the peopleH5971 37beforeH413 MosesH4872 and saidH559, “We should by allH5927 meansH5927 goH5927 up and takeH3423 possessionH3423 of it, for we will surelyH3201 overcomeH3201 it.” 31But the menH376 whoH834 had goneH5927 up with him saidH559, “38We are not ableH3201 to goH5927 up againstH413 the peopleH5971, for they are tooH4480 strongH2389 for us.” 32So they gaveH3318 out to the sonsH1121 of IsraelH3478 39a badH1681 reportH1681 of the landH776 whichH834 they had spiedH8446 out, sayingH559, “The landH776 throughH5674 whichH834 we have goneH5674, in spyingH8446 it out, is 40a landH776 that devoursH398 its 41inhabitantsH3427; and 42allH3605 the peopleH5971 whomH834 we sawH7200 in it are menH376 of great sizeH4060. 33ThereH8033 also we sawH7200 the 43NephilimH5303 (the sonsH1121 of AnakH6061 are part of the NephilimH5303); and 44we becameH1961 like grasshoppersH2284 in our own sightH5869, and soH3651 we were in their sightH5869.”
