Leviticus 24
(Exodus 27:20–21)
1Then the LORDH3068 saidH1696 toH413 MosesH4872H559, 2“CommandH6680 the IsraelitesH1121H3478 to bringH3947 youH413 pureH2134 oilH8081 of pressedH3795 olivesH2132 for the lightH3974, to keep the lampsH5216 burningH5927 continuallyH8548.
3OutsideH2351 the veilH6532 of the TestimonyH57151 in the TentH168 of MeetingH4150, AaronH175 is to tendH6186 the lampsH853 continuallyH8548 beforeH6440 the LORDH3068 from eveningH6153 untilH5704 morningH1242. This is to be a permanentH5769 statuteH2708 for the generations to comeH1755. 4He shall tendH6186 the lampsH5216 onH5921 the pureH2889 gold lampstandH4501 beforeH6440 the LORDH3068 continuallyH8548.
The Showbread
(Exodus 25:23–30; Exodus 37:10–16)
5You are also to takeH3947 fine flourH5560 and bakeH644 twelveH8147H6240 loavesH2471, usingH1961 two-tenths of an ephahH8147H6241 for eachH259 loafH2471,2 6and setH7760 themH853 in twoH8147 rowsH4635—sixH8337 per rowH4635—onH5921 the tableH7979 of pure goldH2889 beforeH6440 the LORDH3068. 7And you are to placeH5414 pureH2134 frankincenseH3828 nearH5921 each rowH4635, so that it may serveH1961 as a memorial portionH234 for the breadH3899, a food offeringH801 to the LORDH3068.
8Every Sabbath dayH3117H7676 the bread is to be set outH6186 beforeH6440 the LORDH3068H8548H854 on behalf of the IsraelitesH1121H3478 as a permanentH5769 covenantH1285. 9It belongs toH1961 AaronH175 and his sonsH1121, who are to eatH398 it in a holyH6918 placeH4725; forH3588 itH1931 is to him a mostH6944 holyH6944 part of the food offeringsH801 to the LORDH3068—his portionH2706 foreverH5769.”
Punishment for Blasphemy
10Now the sonH1121 of an IsraeliteH3481H1931 motherH802 and an EgyptianH4713 fatherH376 went outH3318 amongH8432 the IsraelitesH1121H3478, and a fight broke outH5327 in the campH4264 between him and an IsraeliteH3481. 11The sonH1121 of the IsraeliteH3481 womanH802 blasphemedH5344 the NameH8034 with a curseH7043. So they broughtH935 himH853 toH413 MosesH4872. (His mother’sH517 nameH8034 was ShelomithH8019 daughterH1323 of DibriH1704, of the tribeH4294 of DanH1835.)
12They placed himH5117 in custodyH4929 until the willH6310 of the LORDH3068 should be made clearH6567 to themH5921.
13Then the LORDH3068 saidH1696 toH413 MosesH4872H559, 14“TakeH3318 the blasphemerH70433 outsideH2351 the campH4264, and have allH3605 who heardH8085 himH853 layH5564 their handsH3027 onH5921 his headH7218; then have the wholeH3605 assemblyH5712 stoneH7275 himH853.
And you are to tellH1696H559 the IsraelitesH1121H3478, ‘IfH3588 anyoneH376 cursesH7043 his GodH430, he shall bear the consequencesH5375 of his sinH2399. 16Whoever blasphemesH5344 the nameH8034 of the LORDH3068 must surely be put to deathH4191; the wholeH3605 assemblyH5712 must surely stoneH7275 him, whether he is a foreign residentH1616 or nativeH249; if he blasphemesH5344 the NameH8034, he must be put to deathH4191.
An Eye for an Eye
(Matthew 5:38–48)
17And ifH3588 a manH376 takes the lifeH5221 of anyone elseH3605H5315H120, he must surely be put to deathH4191. 18Whoever killsH5221 an animalH929 must make restitutionH7999—lifeH5315 forH8478H5315 lifeH5315. 19IfH3588 anyoneH376 injuresH5414H3971 his neighborH5997, whateverH834 he has doneH6213H3651 must be doneH6213 to him: 20fractureH7667 forH8478 fractureH7667, eyeH5869 forH8478 eyeH5869, toothH8127 forH8478 toothH8127.4 Just asH834 he injuredH5414H3971 the other personH120, the sameH3651 must be inflictedH5414 on him.
21Whoever killsH5221 an animalH929 must make restitutionH7999, but whoever killsH5221 a manH120 must be put to deathH4191. 22You are to haveH1961 the sameH259 standard of lawH4941 for the foreign residentH1616 and the nativeH249H1961; forH3588 IH589 am the LORDH3068 your GodH430.’”
23Then MosesH4872 spokeH1696 toH413 the IsraelitesH1121H3478, and they tookH3318 the blasphemerH7043 outsideH413H2351 the campH4264 and stonedH7275 himH68. So the IsraelitesH1121H3478 didH6213 asH834 the LORDH3068 had commandedH6680 MosesH4872.
