Leviticus 14
(Matthew 8:1–4; Mark 1:40–45; Luke 5:12–16)
Then the LORDH3068 saidH1696 toH413 MosesH4872H559, 2“ThisH2063 isH1961 the lawH8451 for the one afflicted with a skin diseaseH68791 on the dayH3117 of his cleansingH2893, when he is broughtH935 toH413 the priestH3548. 3The priestH3548H413 is to goH3318 outsideH2351 the campH4264 to examine himH7200H3548, and ifH2009 the skin diseaseH6883 ofH4480 the afflicted personH6879 has healedH7495H5061, 4the priestH3548 shall orderH6680 that twoH8147 liveH2416 cleanH2889 birdsH6833, cedarH730 woodH6086, scarlet yarnH8144H8438, and hyssopH231 be broughtH3947 for the one to be cleansedH2891.
Then the priestH3548 shall commandH6680 that oneH259 of the birdsH6833 be slaughteredH7819 overH5921 freshH2416 waterH43252 inH413 a clayH2789 potH3627. 6And he is to takeH3947 the liveH2416 birdH6833 together with the cedarH730 woodH6086, scarlet yarnH8144H8438, and hyssopH231, and dipH2881 themH853 into the bloodH1818H6833 of the birdH6833 that was slaughteredH7819 overH5921 the freshH2416 waterH4325. 7SevenH7651 timesH6471 he shall sprinkleH5137H5921 the one to be cleansedH2891 ofH4480 the skin diseaseH6883. Then he shall pronounce him cleanH2891 and releaseH7971 the liveH2416 birdH6833 intoH5921 the openH6440 fieldH7704.
The one being cleansedH2891 must washH3526 his clothesH899, shave offH1548 allH3605 his hairH8181, and batheH7364 with waterH4325; then he will be ceremonially cleanH2891. AfterwardH310, he may enterH935H413 the campH4264, but he must remainH3427 outsideH2351 his tentH168 for sevenH7651 daysH3117. 9On the seventhH7637 dayH3117H1961 he must shave offH1548 allH3605 his hairH8181—his headH7218, his beardH2206, his eyebrowsH1354H5869, and the restH3605 of his hairH8181H1548. He must washH3526 his clothesH899 and batheH7364 himselfH1320 with waterH4325, and he will be cleanH2891.
On the eighthH8066 dayH3117 he is to bringH3947 twoH8147 unblemishedH8549 male lambsH3532, anH259 unblemishedH8549 ewe lambH3535 a year oldH1323H8141, a grain offeringH4503 of three-tenthsH7969H6241 of an ephah of fine flourH55603 mixedH1101 with olive oilH8081, and oneH259 logH3849 of olive oilH8081.4 11The priestH3548 who performs the cleansingH2891 shall presentH5975 the oneH376 to be cleansedH2891, together with these offeringsH854, beforeH6440 the LORDH3068 at the entranceH6607 to the TentH168 of MeetingH4150.
Then the priestH3548 is to takeH3947 oneH259 of the male lambsH3532 and presentH7126 it as a guilt offeringH817, along with the logH3849 of olive oilH8081; and he must waveH5130 themH853 as a wave offeringH8573 beforeH6440 the LORDH3068. 13Then he is to slaughterH7819 the lambH3532 in the sanctuaryH6944 areaH4725 whereH834 the sin offeringH2403 and burnt offeringH5930 are slaughteredH7819. LikeH3588 the sin offeringH2403, the guilt offeringH817 belongs to the priestH3548; itH1931 is mostH6944 holyH6944H1931.
The priestH3548 is to takeH3947 some of the bloodH1818 from the guilt offeringH817 and put itH5414H3548 onH5921 the rightH3233 earlobeH241H8571 of the one to be cleansedH2891, onH5921 the thumbH931 of his rightH3233 handH3027, and onH5921 the big toeH931 of his rightH3233 footH7272. 15Then the priestH3548 shall takeH3947 some of the logH3849 of olive oilH8081, pourH3332 it intoH5921 hisH3548 leftH8042 palmH3709, 16dipH2881 his rightH3233 forefingerH676 intoH4480 the oilH8081 inH5921 his leftH8042 palmH3709, and sprinkleH5137 some ofH4480 the oilH8081 with his fingerH676 sevenH7651 timesH6471 beforeH6440 the LORDH3068. 17And the priestH3548 is to putH5414 someH5921 of the oilH8081 remainingH3499 inH5921 his palmH3709 on the rightH3233 earlobeH241H8571 of the one to be cleansedH2891, onH5921 the thumbH931 of his rightH3233 handH3027, and onH5921 the big toeH931 of his rightH3233 footH7272, on top ofH5921 the bloodH1818 of the guilt offeringH817.
The restH3498 of the oilH8081 in hisH5921 palmH3709, the priestH3548 is to putH5414 onH5921 the headH7218 of the one to be cleansedH2891, to make atonementH3722 for himH5921 beforeH6440 the LORDH3068. 19Then the priestH3548 is to sacrificeH6213 the sin offeringH2403 and make atonementH3722 forH5921 the one to be cleansedH2891 from his uncleannessH2932. After thatH310, the priest shall slaughterH7819 the burnt offeringH5930 20and offerH5927 it on the altarH4196, withH853 the grain offeringH4503, to make atonementH3722 for himH5921, and he will be cleanH2891.
If, howeverH518, the person is poorH1800 and cannotH369 afford theseH3027H5381 offerings, he is to takeH3947 oneH259 male lambH3532 as a guilt offeringH817 to be wavedH8573 to make atonementH3722 for himH5921, along with a tenthH6241 of an ephah of fine flourH5560H2595 mixedH1101 with olive oilH8081 for a grain offeringH4503, a logH3849 of olive oilH8081, 22and twoH8147 turtledovesH8449 orH176 twoH8147 youngH1121 pigeonsH3123, whicheverH834 he can affordH5381H3027, oneH259 to beH1961 a sin offeringH2403 and the otherH259 a burnt offeringH5930.
On the eighthH8066 dayH3117 he is to bringH935 themH853 for his cleansingH2893 toH413 the priestH3548 atH413 the entranceH6607 to the TentH168 of MeetingH4150 beforeH6440 the LORDH3068. 24The priestH3548 shall takeH3947 the lambH3532 for the guilt offeringH817, along withH853 the logH3849 of olive oilH8081, and waveH5130 themH853H3548 as a wave offeringH8573 beforeH6440 the LORDH3068.
And after he slaughtersH7819 the lambH3532 for the guilt offeringH817, the priestH3548 is to takeH3947 some of the bloodH1818 of the guilt offeringH817 and putH5414 it onH5921 the rightH3233 earlobeH8571H241 of the one to be cleansedH2891, onH5921 the thumbH931 of his rightH3233 handH3027, and onH5921 the big toeH931 of his rightH3233 footH7272. 26Then the priestH3548 is to pourH3332 some ofH4480 the oilH8081 intoH5921 hisH3548 leftH8042 palmH3709 27and sprinkleH5137 with his rightH3233 forefingerH676 some ofH4480 the oilH8081 inH5921 his leftH8042 palmH3709 sevenH7651 timesH6471 beforeH6440 the LORDH3068. 28The priestH3548 shall also putH5414 some ofH4480 the oilH8081 inH5921 his palmH3709 onH5921 the rightH3233 earlobeH8571H241 of the one to be cleansedH2891, onH5921 the thumbH931 of his rightH3233 handH3027, and onH5921 the big toeH931 of his rightH3233 footH7272—onH5921 the same placesH4725 as the bloodH1818 of the guilt offeringH817.
The restH3498 ofH4480 the oilH8081 in hisH5921 palmH3709, the priestH3548 is to putH5414 onH5921 the headH7218 of the one to be cleansedH2891, to make atonementH3722 for himH5921 beforeH6440 the LORDH3068. 30Then he must sacrificeH6213 the turtledovesH8449 orH176H4480 youngH1121 pigeonsH3123, whicheverH834 he can affordH5381H3027, 31oneH259 as a sin offeringH2403 and the otherH259 as a burnt offeringH5930,6 together withH5921 the grain offeringH4503. In this way the priestH3548 will make atonementH3722 beforeH6440 the LORDH3068 forH5921 the one to be cleansedH2891.
ThisH2063 is the lawH8451 for someone who hasH834H5061 a skin diseaseH6883 and cannotH3808 affordH5381H3027 the cost of his cleansingH2893.”
Signs of Home Contamination
Then the LORDH3068 saidH1696 toH413 MosesH4872H413 and AaronH175H559, 34“WhenH3588 you enterH935H413 the landH776 of CanaanH3667, whichH834 IH589 am givingH5414 you as your possessionH272, and I putH5414 a contaminationH5061 of mildewH68837 into a houseH1004 in that landH776, 35the ownerH834 of the houseH1004 shall comeH935 and tellH5046 the priestH3548H559, ‘Something like mildewH5061 has appearedH7200 in my houseH1004.’
The priestH3548 must order thatH6680 the houseH1004 be clearedH6437 beforeH2962 heH3548 enters itH935 to examineH7200 the mildewH5061, so that nothingH3808H3605 in the houseH1004 will become uncleanH2930. AfterH310 thisH3651, the priestH3548 shall go inH935 to inspectH7200 the houseH1004.
He is to examineH7200 the house, and ifH2009 the mildewH5061 on the wallsH7023 consists of greenH3422 orH176 redH125 depressionsH8258 that appearH4758 to be beneathH8217H4480 the surface of the wallH7023, 38the priestH3548H4480 shall go outsideH3318 the doorwayH6607 of the houseH1004 and closeH5462 it upH1004 for sevenH7651 daysH3117.
On the seventhH7637 dayH3117 the priestH3548 is to returnH7725 and inspectH7200 the house. IfH2009 the mildewH5061 has spreadH6581 on the wallsH7023, 40he must orderH6680 thatH834 the contaminatedH5061 stonesH68 be pulled outH2502 and thrownH7993 intoH413 an uncleanH2931 placeH4725 outsideH2351 the cityH5892H413. 41AndH853 he shall have the insideH1004 of the houseH1004 scrapedH7106 completelyH5439 and the plasterH6083 thatH834 is scraped offH7096 dumpedH8210 intoH413 an uncleanH2931 placeH4725 outsideH2351 the cityH5892H413.
So differentH312 stonesH68 must be obtainedH3947 to replaceH935H413H8478 the contaminated onesH68, as well as additionalH312 mortarH6083 to replasterH2902 the houseH1004.
IfH518 the mildewH5061H6524 reappearsH7725 in the houseH1004 afterH310 the stonesH68 have been torn outH2502 andH310 the houseH1004H310 has been scrapedH7096 and replasteredH2902, 44the priestH3548 must comeH935 and inspect itH7200.
IfH2009 the mildewH5061 has spreadH6581 in the houseH1004, itH1931 is a destructiveH3992 mildewH6883; the houseH1004 is uncleanH2931H1931. 45ItH1004 must be torn downH5422 with its stonesH68, its timbersH6086, and allH3605 itsH1004 plasterH6083, and takenH3318 outsideH2351 the cityH5892H413 toH413 an uncleanH2931 placeH4725. 46Anyone who entersH935H413 the houseH1004 during anyH3605 of the daysH3117 that it is closed upH5462 will be uncleanH2930 untilH5704 eveningH6153. 47And anyone who sleepsH7901 in the houseH1004 or eatsH398 in itH1004 must washH3526 his clothesH899.
Cleansing a Home
If, howeverH518, the priestH3548 comesH935 and inspects itH7200, andH2009 the mildewH5061 has notH3808 spreadH6581 afterH310 the houseH1004 has been replasteredH2902, heH3548 shall pronounce the houseH1004 cleanH2891, becauseH3588 the mildewH5061 is goneH7495.
He is to takeH3947 twoH8147 birdsH6833, cedarH730 woodH6086, scarlet yarnH8144H8438, and hyssopH231 to purifyH2398 the houseH1004; 50and he shall slaughterH7819 oneH259 of the birdsH6833 overH413 freshH2416 waterH4325 in a clayH2789H5921 potH3627.
Then he shall takeH3947 the cedarH730 woodH6086, the hyssopH231, the scarlet yarnH8144H8438, and the liveH2416 birdH6833, dipH2881 themH853 in the bloodH1818 of the slaughteredH7819 birdH6833 and the freshH2416 waterH4325, and sprinkleH5137H413 the houseH1004 sevenH7651 timesH6471. 52And he shall cleanseH2398 the houseH1004 with the bird’sH6833 bloodH1818, the freshH2416 waterH4325, the liveH2416 birdH6833, the cedarH730 woodH6086, the hyssopH231, and the scarlet yarnH8144H8438.
Finally, he is to releaseH7971 the liveH2416 birdH6833 intoH413 the openH6440 fieldsH7704 outsideH2351 the cityH5892H413. In this way he will make atonementH3722 forH5921 the houseH1004, and it will be cleanH2891.
ThisH2063 is the lawH8451 for anyH3605 infectious skin diseaseH6883H5061, for a scaly outbreakH5424, 55for mildewH6883 in clothingH899 or in a houseH1004, 56and for a swellingH7613, rashH5597, or spotH934, 57to determineH3384 whenH3117 something is cleanH2889 or uncleanH2931. ThisH2063 is the lawH8451 regarding skin diseases and mildewH6883.8”
