War between Asa and Baasha

(1 Kings 15:16–22)

1In the thirty-sixthH7970H8337H4438 yearH8141 of Asa’sH609 reign, BaashaH1201 kingH4428 of IsraelH3478 went upH5927 againstH5921 JudahH3063 and fortifiedH1129 RamahH7414 to preventH1115H5414 anyone from leavingH3318 or entering the territoryH935 of AsaH609 kingH4428 of JudahH3063. 2So AsaH609 withdrewH3318 the silverH3701 and goldH2091 from the treasuriesH214 of the houseH1004 of the LORDH3068 and the royalH4428 palaceH1004, and he sent itH7971 with this messageH559 toH413 Ben-hadadH1130 kingH4428 of AramH758, who was rulingH3427 in DamascusH1834: 3“Let there be a treatyH12851 between me and youH996 as there was betweenH996 my fatherH1H996 and your fatherH1. SeeH2009, I have sentH7971 you silverH3701 and goldH2091. Now goH1980 and breakH6565 your treatyH1285 withH854 BaashaH1201 kingH4428 of IsraelH3478, so that he will withdrawH5927 from meH5921.”

4And Ben-hadadH1130 listenedH8085 toH413 KingH4428 AsaH609 and sentH7971 the commandersH8269 of his armiesH2428 againstH413 the citiesH5892 of IsraelH3478, conqueringH5221 IjonH5859, DanH1835, Abel-maimH66,2 and allH3605 the storeH4543 citiesH5892 of NaphtaliH5321.

When BaashaH1201 learned of thisH8085, he stoppedH2308 fortifyingH1129 RamahH7414 and abandonedH7673 his workH4399. 6Then KingH4428 AsaH609 broughtH3947 allH3605 the men of JudahH3063, and they carried awayH5375 the stonesH68 of RamahH7414 and the timbersH6086 BaashaH1201 had used for buildingH1129. And with these materials he built upH1129 GebaH1387 and MizpahH4709.

Hanani’s Message to Asa

7At thatH1931 timeH6256 HananiH2607 the seerH7203 cameH935 toH413 KingH4428 AsaH609 of JudahH3063 and toldH559 himH413, “Because you have reliedH8172 onH5921 the kingH4428 of AramH758 and notH3808 onH5921 the LORDH3068 your GodH430H5921H3651, the armyH2428 of the kingH4428 of AramH758 has escapedH4422 from your handH3027. 8WereH1961 notH3808 the CushitesH35693 and LibyansH3864 a vastH7230 armyH2428 with manyH7235H3966 chariotsH7393 and horsemenH6571? Yet because you reliedH8172 onH5921 the LORDH3068, He delivered themH5414 into your handH3027. 9ForH3588 the eyesH5869 of the LORDH3068 roam to and froH7751 over allH3605 the earthH776, to show Himself strongH2388 on behalf ofH5973 those whose heartsH3824 are fully devotedH8003 to HimH413. You have acted foolishlyH5528 inH5921 this matterH2063. From now onH6258, thereforeH3588, you will be atH3426H5973 warH4421.”

10AsaH609 was angryH3707 withH413 the seerH7203 and became so enragedH2197H5973 overH5921 this matterH2063 that he putH5414 the man in prisonH1004H4115. And at the sameH1931 timeH6256 AsaH609 oppressedH7533 some ofH4480 the peopleH5971.

The Death and Burial of Asa

11NowH2009 the actsH1697 of AsaH609, from beginningH7223 to endH314, are indeedH2005 writtenH3789 inH5921 the BookH5612 of the KingsH4428 of JudahH3063 and IsraelH3478. 12In the thirty-ninthH7970H8672 yearH8141 of his reignH4438, AsaH609 became diseasedH2456 in his feetH7272, andH5704 his diseaseH2483 became increasingly severeH4605. Yet evenH1571 in his illnessH2483 he did notH3808 seekH1875 the LORDH3068, butH3588 only the physiciansH7495.

13So in the forty-firstH705H259 yearH8141 of his reignH4427, AsaH609 diedH4191 and restedH7901 withH5973 his fathersH1. 14And he was buriedH6912 in the tombH6913 thatH834 he had cut outH3738 for himself in the CityH5892 of DavidH1732. They laid himH7901 on a bierH4904 thatH834 was full ofH4390 spicesH1314 and variousH2177 blendedH4639 perfumesH7543H4842; then they made a greatH1419H5704H3966 fireH8313 in his honorH8316.
