Jehoshaphat Reigns in Judah
(1 Kings 15:23–24)
1Asa’s sonH1121 JehoshaphatH3092 reignedH4427 in his placeH8478, and he strengthened himselfH2388 againstH5921 IsraelH3478. 2He stationedH5414 troopsH2428 in everyH3605 fortifiedH1219 cityH5892 of JudahH3063 and putH5414 garrisonsH5333 in the landH776 of JudahH3063 and in the citiesH5892 of EphraimH669 thatH834 his fatherH1 AsaH609 had capturedH3920.
3Now the LORDH3068 wasH1961 withH5973 JehoshaphatH3092 becauseH3588 he walkedH1980 in the earlierH7223 waysH18701 of his fatherH1 DavidH1732. He did notH3808 seekH1875 the BaalsH1168, 4butH3588 he soughtH1875 the GodH430 of his fatherH1 and walkedH1980 by His commandmentsH4687 rather thanH3808 the practicesH4639 of IsraelH3478. 5So the LORDH3068 establishedH3559 the kingdomH4467 in his handH3027, and allH3605 JudahH3063 broughtH5414 himH3092 tributeH4503, so thatH1961 he had an abundanceH7230 of richesH6239 and honorH3519. 6And his heartH3820 took delightH13612 in the waysH1870 of the LORDH3068; furthermoreH5750, he removedH5493 the high placesH1116 and Asherah polesH842 from JudahH3063.
7In the thirdH7969 yearH8141 of his reignH4427, Jehoshaphat sentH7971 his officialsH8269 Ben-hailH1134, ObadiahH5662, ZechariahH2148, NethanelH5417, and MicaiahH4322 to teachH3925 in the citiesH5892 of JudahH3063, 8accompanied byH5973 certain LevitesH3881—ShemaiahH8098, NethaniahH5418, ZebadiahH2069, AsahelH6214, ShemiramothH8070, JehonathanH3083, AdonijahH138, TobijahH2900, and Tob-adonijahH2899—along withH5973 the priestsH3548 ElishamaH476 and JehoramH3088. 9They taughtH3925 throughout JudahH3063, taking with themH5973 the BookH5612 of the LawH8451 of the LORDH3068. They wentH5437 throughoutH3605 the townsH5892 of JudahH3063 and taughtH3925 the peopleH5971.
10And the dreadH6343 of the LORDH3068 fellH1961 uponH5921 allH3605 the kingdomsH4467 of the landsH776 thatH834 surroundedH5439 JudahH3063, so that they did notH3808 make warH3898 againstH5973 JehoshaphatH3092. 11SomeH4480 PhilistinesH6430 also broughtH935 giftsH4503 and silverH3701 as tributeH4853 to JehoshaphatH3092, andH1571 the ArabsH6163 broughtH935 him 7,700H7651H505H3967 ramsH352 and 7,700H7651H505H3967 goatsH8495 from their flocksH6629.
JehoshaphatH3092 grew strongerH1980H1432H5704 and strongerH4605, and he builtH1129 fortressesH1003 and storeH4543 citiesH5892 in JudahH3063 13and kept vastH7227 suppliesH4399 in the citiesH5892 of JudahH3063. He also hadH1961 warriorsH4421H582 in JerusalemH3389 who were mighty menH1368 of valorH2428. 14TheseH428 are their numbersH6486 according to the housesH1004 of their fathersH1:
From JudahH3063, the commandersH8269 of thousandsH505: AdnahH5734 the commanderH8269, and with himH5973 300,000H7969H3967H505 mighty menH1368 of valorH2428; 15next toH5921 himH3027, JehohananH3076 the commanderH8269, and with himH5973 280,000H3967H8084H505; 16and next toH5921 himH3027, AmasiahH6007 sonH1121 of ZichriH2147, the volunteerH5068 for the LORDH3068, and with himH5973 200,000H3967H505 mighty menH1368 of valorH2428. 17FromH4480 BenjaminH1144: EliadaH450, a mighty manH1368 of valorH2428, and with himH5973 200,000H3967H505 armedH5401 with bowsH7198 and shieldsH4043; 18and next toH5921 himH3027, JehozabadH3075, and with himH5973 180,000H3967H8084H505 armedH2502 for battleH6635.
19These were the menH428 who servedH8334 the kingH4428, besidesH905 thoseH834 heH4428 stationedH5414 in the fortifiedH4013 citiesH5892 throughoutH3605 JudahH3063.
