Asa Reigns in Judah

(1 Kings 15:9–15)

1Then AbijahH29 restedH7901 withH5973 his fathersH1 and was buriedH6912 in the CityH5892 of DavidH1732. And his sonH1121 AsaH609 reignedH4427 in his placeH8478, and in his daysH3117 the landH776 was at peaceH8252 for tenH6235 yearsH8141.

2And AsaH609 didH6213 what was goodH2896 and rightH3477 in the eyesH5869 of the LORDH3068 his GodH430. 3He removedH5493 the foreignH5236 altarsH4196 and high placesH1116, shatteredH7665 the sacred pillarsH4676, and chopped downH1438 the Asherah polesH842. 4He commandedH559 the people of JudahH3063 to seekH1875 the LORDH3068, the GodH430 of their fathersH1, and to observeH6213 the lawH8451 and the commandmentsH4687. 5He also removedH5493 the high placesH1116 and incense altarsH2553 from allH3605 the citiesH5892 of JudahH3063, and under himH6440 the kingdomH4467 was at peaceH8252.

6BecauseH3588 the landH776 was at peaceH8252, Asa builtH1129 fortifiedH4694 citiesH5892 in JudahH3063. In thoseH428 daysH8141 no oneH369 made warH4421 with himH5973, becauseH3588 the LORDH3068 had given him restH5117. 7So he saidH559 to the people of JudahH3063, “Let us buildH1129 theseH428 citiesH5892 and surround themH5437 with wallsH2346 and towersH4026, with doorsH1817 and barsH1280. The landH776 is stillH5750 oursH6440 becauseH3588 we have soughtH1875 the LORDH3068 our GodH430. We have soughtH1875 Him, and He has given us restH5117 on every sideH5439.” So they builtH1129 and prosperedH6743.

8AsaH609 hadH1961 an armyH2428 of 300,000 menH7969H3967H505 from JudahH3063 bearingH5375 large shieldsH6793 and spearsH7420, and 280,000 menH3967H8084H505 from BenjaminH1144 bearingH5375 small shieldsH4043 and drawingH1869 the bowH7198. AllH3605 theseH428 were mighty menH1368 of valorH2428.

9Then ZerahH2226 the CushiteH3569 cameH3318 against themH413 with an armyH2428 of 1,000,000 menH5051 and 300H7969H3967 chariotsH4818, and they advancedH935 as far asH5704 MareshahH4762. 10So AsaH609 marched outH3318 against himH6440 and lined upH6186 in battle formationH4421 in the ValleyH1516 of ZephathahH6859 near MareshahH4762.2

11Then AsaH609 cried outH7121 toH413 the LORDH3068 his GodH430H559: “O LORDH3068, there is no oneH369 besides YouH5973 to helpH5826H996 the powerlessH369H3581 against the mightyH7227. Help usH5826, O LORDH3068 our GodH430, forH3588 we relyH8172 on YouH5921, and in Your nameH8034 we have comeH935 againstH5921 thisH2088 multitudeH1995. O LORDH3068, YouH859 are our GodH430. Do notH408 let a mere mortalH582 prevailH6113 against YouH5973.”

12So the LORDH3068 struck downH5062 the CushitesH3569 beforeH6440 AsaH609 andH6440 JudahH3063, and the CushitesH3569 fledH5127. 13Then AsaH609 and his armyH5971 pursued themH7291 as far asH5704 GerarH1642. The CushitesH3569 fellH5307 and could notH369 recoverH4241, forH3588 they were crushedH7665 beforeH6440 the LORDH3068H6440 and His armyH4264. So the people of Judah carried offH5375 a great amount ofH7235H3966 plunderH7998 14and attackedH5221 allH3605 the citiesH5892 aroundH5439 GerarH1642, becauseH3588 the terrorH6343 of the LORDH3068 had fallenH1961 upon themH5921. They plunderedH962 allH3605 the citiesH5892, sinceH3588 there wasH1961 muchH7227 plunderH961 there. 15They alsoH1571 attackedH5221 the tentsH168 of the herdsmenH4735 and carried offH7617 manyH7230 sheepH6629 and camelsH1581. Then they returnedH7725 to JerusalemH3389.
