Jehoshaphat Reproved by Jehu
1When JehoshaphatH3092 kingH4428 of JudahH3063 had returnedH7725 safelyH7965 toH413 his homeH1004 in JerusalemH3389, 2JehuH3058 sonH1121 of HananiH2607 the seerH2374 went outH3318 toH413 confront himH6440 and saidH559 toH413 KingH4428 JehoshaphatH3092, “Should you helpH5826 the wickedH7563 and loveH157 those who hateH8130 the LORDH3068? Because of thisH2063, the wrathH7110 of the LORDH3068 is upon youH6440H5921. 3HoweverH61, someH1697 goodH2896 is foundH4672 in youH5973, forH3588 you have removedH1197 the Asherah polesH842 fromH4480 the landH776 and have setH3559 your heartH3824 on seekingH1875 GodH430.”
Jehoshaphat’s Reforms
4JehoshaphatH3092 livedH3427 in JerusalemH3389, and once againH7725 he went outH3318 among the peopleH5971 from BeershebaH884 toH5704 the hill countryH2022 of EphraimH669 and turned them backH7725 toH413 the LORDH3068, the GodH430 of their fathersH1. 5He appointedH5975 judgesH8199 in the landH776, in each ofH3605 the fortifiedH1219 citiesH5892 of JudahH3063. 6Then he saidH559 toH413 the judgesH8199, “Consider carefullyH7200 whatH4100 youH859 doH6213, forH3588 you are notH3808 judgingH8199 for manH120, butH3588 for the LORDH3068, who is with youH5973 when you render judgmentH1697H4941. 7And nowH6258, may the fearH6343 of the LORDH3068 beH1961 upon youH5921. Be carefulH8104 what you doH6213, forH3588 withH5973 the LORDH3068 our GodH430 there is noH369 injusticeH5766 or partialityH4856H6440 or briberyH4727H7810.”
8MoreoverH1571, JehoshaphatH3092 appointedH5975 in JerusalemH3389 some ofH4480 the LevitesH3881, priestsH3548, and headsH7218 of the IsraeliteH3478 familiesH1 to judgeH4941 on behalf of the LORDH3068 and to settle disputesH7379. And they livedH7725 in JerusalemH3389. 9He commanded themH6680H5921, sayingH559H3541, “You must serveH6213 faithfullyH530 and wholeheartedlyH8003H3824 in the fearH3374 of the LORDH3068. 10For everyH3605 disputeH7379 thatH834 comesH935 before youH5921 from your brothersH251 who dwellH3427 in their citiesH5892—whetherH996 it regards bloodshedH1818 or some other violationH1818 ofH996 lawH8451, commandmentsH4687, statutesH2706, or ordinancesH4941—you are to warn themH2094, so that they will notH3808 incur guiltH816 before the LORDH3068 and wrathH7110 will not comeH1961 upon youH5921 andH5921 your brothersH251. DoH6213 thisH3541, and you will notH3808 incur guiltH816.
11Note thatH2009 AmariahH568, the chiefH7218 priestH3548, will be over youH5921 in allH3605 that pertainsH1697 to the LORDH3068, and ZebadiahH2069 sonH1121 of IshmaelH3458, the rulerH5057 of the houseH1004 of JudahH3063, in allH3605 that pertainsH1697 to the kingH4428. And the LevitesH3881 will serve as officersH7860 before youH6440. ActH6213 resolutelyH2388; may the LORDH3068 beH1961 withH5973 the uprightH2896!”
