Shishak Raids Jerusalem
(1 Kings 14:25–28)
After Rehoboam had establishedH3559 hisH7346 sovereigntyH4438 and royal powerH2393, he and allH3605 IsraelH34781 with himH5973 forsookH5800 the LawH8451 of the LORDH3068. 2In the fifthH2549 yearH8141 of Rehoboam’sH7346 reignH4428, becauseH3588 they had been unfaithfulH4603 to the LORDH3068, ShishakH7895 kingH4428 of EgyptH4714 attackedH5927H5921 JerusalemH3389 3with 1,200H505H3967 chariotsH7393, 60,000H8346H505 horsemenH6571,2 and countlessH369H4557 troopsH5971 whoH834 cameH935 with himH5973 out of EgyptH4714—LibyansH3864, SukkitesH5525, and CushitesH3569.3 4He capturedH3920 the fortifiedH4694 citiesH5892 of JudahH3063 and cameH935 as far asH5704 JerusalemH3389.
5Then ShemaiahH8098 the prophetH5030 cameH935 toH413 RehoboamH7346 and the leadersH8269 of JudahH3063 whoH834 had gatheredH622 atH413 JerusalemH3389 because ofH6440 ShishakH7895, and he said toH559 them, “This is whatH3541 the LORDH3068 saysH559: ‘YouH859 have forsaken MeH5800; thereforeH637, IH589 have forsakenH5800 youH853 into the handH3027 of ShishakH7895.’”
6So the leadersH8269 of IsraelH3478 and the kingH4428 humbled themselvesH3665 and saidH559, “The LORDH3068 is righteousH6662.”
7When the LORDH3068 sawH7200 thatH3588 they had humbled themselvesH3665, the wordH1697 of the LORDH3068 cameH1961 toH413 ShemaiahH8098, sayingH559, “They have humbled themselvesH3665; I will notH3808 destroy themH7843, but will soon grantH5414H4592 them deliveranceH6413. My wrathH2534 will notH3808 be poured outH5413 on JerusalemH3389 throughH3027 ShishakH7895. 8NeverthelessH3588, they will becomeH1961 his servantsH5650, so that they may learnH3045 the difference between serving MeH5656 and servingH5656 the kingsH4467 of other landsH776.”
9So KingH4428 ShishakH7895 of EgyptH4714 attackedH5927H5921 JerusalemH3389 and seizedH3947 the treasuresH214 of the houseH1004 of the LORDH3068 andH853 of the royalH4428 palaceH1004. He tookH3947 everythingH3605, including the goldH2091 shieldsH4043 thatH834 SolomonH8010 had madeH6213.
10Then KingH4428 RehoboamH7346 madeH6213 bronzeH5178 shieldsH4043 in their placeH8478 and committed themH6485 toH5921 the careH3027 of the captainsH8269 of the guardH7323 on dutyH8104 at the entranceH6607 to the royalH4428 palaceH1004. 11AndH1961 wheneverH1767 the kingH4428 enteredH935 the houseH1004 of the LORDH3068, the guardsH7323 would goH935 with him, bearingH5375 the shields, and later they would return themH7725 toH413 the guardroomH7323H8372.
12Because Rehoboam humbled himselfH3665, the angerH639 of the LORDH3068 turned awayH7725 from himH4480, and He did notH3808 destroy him completelyH7843H3617. IndeedH1571, conditionsH1697 wereH1961 goodH2896 in JudahH3063.
Rehoboam’s Reign and Death
(1 Kings 14:21–24)
13Thus KingH4428 RehoboamH7346 established himselfH2388 in JerusalemH3389 and reignedH4427. He was forty-oneH705H259 years oldH1121H8141 when he became kingH4427, and he reignedH4427 seventeenH7651H6240 yearsH8141 in JerusalemH3389, the cityH5892 the LORDH3068 had chosenH977 from allH3605 the tribesH7626 of IsraelH3478 in which to putH7760 His NameH8034H8033. His mother’sH517 nameH8034 was NaamahH5279 the AmmoniteH5984. 14And Rehoboam did evilH6213H7451 becauseH3588 he did notH3808 setH3559 his heartH3820 to seekH1875 the LORDH3068.
15Now the actsH1697 of RehoboamH7346, from firstH7223 to lastH314, are theyH3808 notH1992 writtenH3789 in the recordsH1697 of ShemaiahH8098 the ProphetH5030 and of IddoH5714 the SeerH2374 concerning the genealogiesH3187? There was warH4421 between RehoboamH7346 and JeroboamH3379 throughoutH3605 their daysH3117. 16And RehoboamH7346 restedH7901 withH5973 his fathersH1 and was buriedH6912 in the CityH5892 of DavidH1732. And his sonH1121 AbijahH294 reignedH4427 in his placeH8478.
