Joash Repairs the Temple

(2 Kings 12:1–16)

1JoashH3101 was sevenH7651 years oldH1121H8141 when he became kingH4427, and he reignedH4427 in JerusalemH3389 fortyH705 yearsH8141. His mother’sH517 nameH8034 was ZibiahH6645; she was from BeershebaH884. 2And JoashH3101 didH6213 what was rightH3477 in the eyesH5869 of the LORDH3068 allH3605 the daysH3117 of JehoiadaH3077 the priestH3548. 3JehoiadaH3077 tookH5375 for him twoH8147 wivesH802, and he hadH3205 sonsH1121 and daughtersH1323.

4Some time laterH1961H310, JoashH3101 setH1961 his heartH3820 on repairingH2318 the houseH1004 of the LORDH3068. 5So he gatheredH6908 the priestsH3548 and LevitesH3881 and saidH559, “Go outH3318 to the citiesH5892 of JudahH3063 and collectH6908 the moneyH3701 dueH1767 annuallyH8141 from allH3605 IsraelH3478, to repairH2388 the houseH1004 of your GodH430H859. Do itH1697 quicklyH4116.”

The Levites, howeverH3881, did notH3808 make hasteH4116. 6So the kingH4428 calledH7121 JehoiadaH3077 the highH7218 priest and saidH559, “WhyH4069 have you notH3808 requiredH1875H5921 the LevitesH3881 to bringH935 from JudahH3063 and JerusalemH3389 the tax imposedH4864 by MosesH4872 the servantH5650 of the LORDH3068 and by the assemblyH6951 of IsraelH3478 for the TentH168 of the TestimonyH5715?”

7ForH3588 the sonsH1121 of that wicked womanH4849 AthaliahH6271 had broken intoH6555 the houseH1004 of GodH430 and had evenH1571H3605 usedH6213 the sacred objectsH6944 of the houseH1004 of the LORDH3068 for the BaalsH1168.

8At the king’sH4428 commandH559 aH259 chestH727 was madeH6213 and placedH5414 outsideH2351, at the gateH8179 of the houseH1004 of the LORDH3068. 9And a proclamationH6963 was issuedH5414 in JudahH3063 and JerusalemH3389 that they were to bringH935 to the LORDH3068 the taxH4864 imposed by MosesH4872 the servantH5650 of GodH430 onH5921 IsraelH3478 in the wildernessH4057. 10AllH3605 the officersH8269 and allH3605 the peopleH5971 rejoicedH8055 and brought their contributionsH935, and they dropped themH7993 in the chestH727 untilH5704 it was fullH3615.

11

WheneverH6256 the chestH727 was broughtH935 byH3027 the LevitesH3881 toH413 the king’sH4428 overseersH6486 and they sawH7200 thatH3588 there was a large amountH7227 of moneyH3701, the royalH4428 scribeH5608 and the officerH6496 of the highH7218 priestH3548 would comeH935 and emptyH6168 the chestH727 and carry itH5375 backH7725 toH413 its placeH4725. They didH6213 thisH3541 dailyH3117 and gatheredH622 the moneyH3701 in abundanceH7230. 12Then the kingH4428 and JehoiadaH3077 would giveH5414 the money to those whoH413 supervisedH6213H4399 the laborH5656 on the houseH1004 of the LORDH3068H1961 to hireH7936 stonecuttersH2672 and carpentersH2796 to restoreH2318 the houseH1004 of the LORDH3068, as well asH1571 workersH2796 in ironH1270 and bronzeH5178 to repairH2388 the houseH1004 of the LORDH3068.

13So the workmenH6213H4399 laboredH6213, and in their handsH3027 the repairH724 workH4399 progressedH5927. They restoredH5975 the houseH1004 of GodH430 accordingH5921 to its specificationsH4971, and they reinforced itH553. 14When they were finishedH3615, they broughtH935 the restH7605 of the moneyH3701 toH6440 the kingH4428 and JehoiadaH3077, and with it were madeH6213 articlesH3627 for the houseH1004 of the LORDH3068—utensilsH3627 for the serviceH8335 and for the burnt offeringsH5927, dishesH3709, and other objectsH3627 of goldH2091 and silverH3701.

ThroughoutH3605 the daysH3117 of JehoiadaH3077, burnt offeringsH5930 were presentedH5927 regularlyH8548 in the houseH1004 of the LORDH3068.

Jehoiada’s Death and Burial

15When Jehoiada was oldH2204 and full ofH7646 yearsH3117, he diedH4191 at the ageH8141 of 130H3967H7970.

16And Jehoiada was buriedH6912 withH5973 the kingsH4428 in the CityH5892 of DavidH1732, becauseH3588 he had doneH6213 what was goodH2896 in IsraelH3478 forH5973 GodH430 and His templeH1004.

The Wickedness of Joash

17AfterH310 the deathH4194 of Jehoiada, howeverH3077, the officialsH8269 of JudahH3063 cameH935 and paid homageH7812 to the kingH4428, andH227 he listenedH8085 to themH413. 18They abandonedH5800 the houseH1004 of the LORDH3068, the GodH430 of their fathersH1, and servedH5647 the Asherah polesH842 and idolsH6091. So wrathH7110 cameH1961 uponH5921 JudahH3063 and JerusalemH3389 for thisH2063 guilt of theirsH819. 19Nevertheless, the LORD sentH7971 prophetsH5030 to bring the people backH7725 toH413 Him and to testifyH5749 against them, but they would notH3808 listenH238.

20Then the SpiritH7307 of GodH430 came uponH3847 ZechariahH2148 sonH1121 of JehoiadaH3077 the priestH3548, who stood upH5975 beforeH5921 the peopleH5971 and saidH559 to them, “This is whatH3541 GodH430 saysH559: ‘WhyH4100 do youH859 transgressH5674 the commandmentsH4687 of the LORDH3068 so that you cannotH3808 prosperH6743? BecauseH3588 you have forsakenH5800 the LORDH3068, He has forsakenH5800 youH853.’”

21But they conspiredH7194 against ZechariahH5921, and by orderH4687 of the kingH4428, they stoned himH7275H68 in the courtyardH2691 of the houseH1004 of the LORDH3068.

22Thus KingH4428 JoashH3101 failed toH3808 rememberH2142 the kindnessH2617 thatH834 Zechariah’s fatherH1 JehoiadaH3077 had extendedH6213 to himH5973. Instead, Joash killedH2026 Jehoiada’s sonH1121. As he lay dyingH4191, Zechariah saidH559, “May the LORDH3068 see thisH7200 and call you to accountH1875.”

The Death of Joash

(2 Kings 12:17–21)

In the springH8622H8141,1 the army of AramH758 went to warH5927 against JoashH5921H2428. They enteredH935H413 JudahH3063 and JerusalemH3389 and destroyedH7843 allH3605 the leadersH8269 of the peopleH5971, and they sentH7971 allH3605 the plunderH7998 to their kingH4428 in DamascusH1834. 24AlthoughH3588 the ArameanH758 armyH2428 had comeH935 with only a fewH4705 menH582, the LORDH3068 deliveredH5414 into their handH3027 a veryH3966 greatH7230 armyH2428. BecauseH3588 Judah had forsakenH5800 the LORDH3068, the GodH430 of their fathersH1, judgmentH8201 was executedH6213 onH854 JoashH3101.

25And when the Arameans had withdrawnH1980H4480, they leftH5800 Joash severelyH7227 woundedH4251. His own servantsH5650 conspiredH7194 against himH5921 for shedding the bloodH1818 of the sonH11212 of JehoiadaH3077 the priestH3548, and they killed himH2026 onH5921 his bedH4296. So he diedH4191 and was buriedH6912 in the CityH5892 of DavidH1732, but notH3808 in the tombsH6913 of the kingsH4428. 26ThoseH428 who conspiredH7194 againstH5921 Joash were ZabadH20663 sonH1121 of ShimeathH8100 the AmmonitessH5984 and JehozabadH3075 sonH1121 of ShimrithH81164 the MoabitessH4125.

27The accounts of the sonsH1121 of Joash and the manyH7230 pronouncementsH4853 about himH5921, and of the restorationH32455 of the houseH1004 of GodH430, are indeedH2005 writtenH3789 inH5921 the TreatiseH40976 of the BookH5612 of the KingsH4428. And his sonH1121 AmaziahH558 reignedH4427 in his placeH8478.
