Joshua 7

1But the children of IsraelH3478 committed a trespass in the devoted thing; for AchanH5912, the sonH1121 of CarmiH3756, the sonH1121 of ZabdiH2067, the sonH1121 of ZerahH2226, of the tribeH4294 of JudahH3063, tookH3947 of the devoted thing: and the angerH639 of Jehovah was kindled against the children of IsraelH3478.

2And JoshuaH3091 sentH7971 menH376 from JerichoH3405 to Ai, which is beside Beth-aven, on the eastH6924 side of Beth-el, and spake unto them, sayingH559, GoH5927 up and spyH7270 out the landH776. And the menH376 wentH5927 up and spiedH7270 out Ai. 3And they returnedH7725 to JoshuaH3091, and saidH559 unto him, Let not all the peopleH5971 goH5927 up; but let about two or threeH7969 thousandH505 menH376 goH5927 up and smite Ai; make not all the peopleH5971 to toil thither; for they are but fewH4592. 4So there wentH5927 up thither of the peopleH5971 about threeH7969 thousandH505 menH376: and they fledH5127 before the menH376 of Ai. 5And the menH376 of Ai smote of them about thirtyH7970 and sixH8337 menH376; and they chased them from before the gateH8179 even unto Shebarim, and smote them at the descentH4174: and the heartsH3824 of the peopleH5971 meltedH4549, and becameH1961 as waterH4325.

6And JoshuaH3091 rent his clothesH8071, and fellH5307 to the earthH776 upon his faceH6440 before the arkH727 of Jehovah until the eveningH6153, he and the eldersH2205 of IsraelH3478; and they put dustH6083 upon their headsH7218. 7And JoshuaH3091 saidH559, AlasH162, O LordH136 Jehovah, wherefore hast thou at all brought this peopleH5971 over the JordanH3383, to deliver us into the handH3027 of the AmoritesH567, to cause us to perishH6? would that we had been content and dweltH3427 beyond the JordanH3383! 8Oh, LordH136, what shall I sayH559, after that IsraelH3478 hath turnedH2015 their backsH6203 before their enemiesH341! 9For the CanaanitesH3669 and all the inhabitantsH3427 of the landH776 will hearH8085 of it, and will compass us roundH5437, and cutH3772 off our nameH8034 from the earthH776: and what wilt thou do for thy greatH1419 nameH8034?

10And Jehovah saidH559 unto JoshuaH3091, Get thee up; wherefore art thou thus fallenH5307 upon thy faceH6440? 11IsraelH3478 hath sinnedH2398; yea, they have even transgressed my covenantH1285 which I commandedH6680 them: yea, they have even takenH3947 of the devoted thingH3627, and have alsoH1571 stolenH1589, and dissembled alsoH1571; and they have even putH7760 it among their own stuff. 12Therefore the children of IsraelH3478 cannot standH6965 before their enemiesH341; they turnH6437 their backsH6203 before their enemiesH341, because they are becomeH1961 accursed: I will not beH1961 with you any more, except ye destroyH8045 the devoted thing from among you. 13Up, sanctifyH6942 the peopleH5971, and sayH559, SanctifyH6942 yourselves against to-morrow: for thusH3541 saith Jehovah, the GodH430 of IsraelH3478, There is a devoted thing in the midstH7130 of thee, O IsraelH3478; thou canst not standH6965 before thine enemiesH341, until ye take awayH5493 the devoted thing from among you. 14In the morningH1242 therefore ye shall beH1961 broughtH7126 near by your tribesH7626: and it shall beH1961, that the tribeH7626 which Jehovah taketh shall come near by familiesH4940; and the familyH4940 which Jehovah shall takeH3920 shall come near by householdsH1004; and the householdH1004 which Jehovah shall takeH3920 shall come near manH1397 by manH1397. 15And it shall beH1961, that he that is takenH3920 with the devoted thing shall beH1961 burnt with fireH784, he and all that he hath; because he hath transgressed the covenantH1285 of Jehovah, and because he hath wrought follyH5039 in IsraelH3478.

16So JoshuaH3091 roseH7925 up earlyH7925 in the morningH1242, and broughtH7126 IsraelH3478 near by their tribesH7626; and the tribeH7626 of JudahH3063 was takenH3920: 17and he broughtH7126 near the familyH4940 of JudahH3063; and he tookH3920 the familyH4940 of the Zerahites: and he broughtH7126 near the familyH4940 of the Zerahites manH1397 by manH1397; and ZabdiH2067 was takenH3920: 18and he broughtH7126 near his householdH1004 manH1397 by manH1397; and AchanH5912, the sonH1121 of CarmiH3756, the sonH1121 of ZabdiH2067, the sonH1121 of ZerahH2226, of the tribeH4294 of JudahH3063, was takenH3920. 19And JoshuaH3091 saidH559 unto AchanH5912, My sonH1121, giveH5414, I pray thee, gloryH3519 to Jehovah, the GodH430 of IsraelH3478, and makeH7760 confession unto him; and tellH5046 me now what thou hast done; hideH3582 it not from me. 20And AchanH5912 answered JoshuaH3091, and saidH559, Of a truth I have sinnedH2398 against Jehovah, the GodH430 of IsraelH3478, and thus and thus have I done: 21when I sawH7200 among the spoilH7998 a goodly Babylonish mantle, and two hundredH3967 shekelsH8255 of silverH3701, and a wedge of goldH2091 of fiftyH2572 shekelsH8255 weightH4948, then I covetedH2530 them, and tookH3947 them; and, behold, they are hidH2934 in the earthH776 in the midstH8432 of my tentH168, and the silverH3701 under it.

22So JoshuaH3091 sentH7971 messengersH4397, and they ranH7323 unto the tentH168; and, behold, it was hidH2934 in his tentH168, and the silverH3701 under it. 23And they tookH3947 them from the midstH8432 of the tentH168, and broughtH935 them unto JoshuaH3091, and unto all the children of IsraelH3478; and they laid them down before Jehovah. 24And JoshuaH3091, and all IsraelH3478 with him, tookH3947 AchanH5912 the sonH1121 of ZerahH2226, and the silverH3701, and the mantle, and the wedge of goldH2091, and his sonsH1121, and his daughtersH1323, and his oxen, and his asses, and his sheepH6629, and his tentH168, and all that he had: and they broughtH5927 them up unto the valleyH6010 of AchorH5911. 25And JoshuaH3091 saidH559, WhyH4100 hast thou troubledH5916 us? Jehovah shall troubleH5916 thee this dayH3117. And all IsraelH3478 stonedH5619 him with stonesH68; and they burnedH8313 them with fireH784, and stonedH5619 them with stonesH68. 26And they raisedH6965 over him a greatH1419 heapH1530 of stonesH68, unto this dayH3117; and Jehovah turnedH7725 from the fierceness of his angerH639. Wherefore the nameH8034 of that placeH4725 was calledH7121, The valleyH6010 of AchorH5911, unto this dayH3117.
