2 Samuel 12

Revised Version 1895

1And the LORDH3068 sentH7971 NathanH5416 unto DavidH1732. And he cameH935 unto him, and saidH559 unto him, There were twoH8147 menH376 in one cityH5892; the one richH6223, and the otherH259 poorH7326. 2The richH6223 manH6223 had exceedingH3966 manyH7235 flocksH6629 and herdsH1241: 3but the poorH7326 manH1121 had nothingH369, save one littleH6996 eweH3535 lambH3535, whichH834 he had boughtH7069 and nourished upH1431: and it grewH1431 upH1431 togetherH3162 with him, and with his childrenH1121; it didH834 eatH398 of his ownH1961 morselH6595, and drankH8354 of his ownH1961 cupH3563, and layH7901 in his bosomH2436, and was unto him as a daughterH1323. 4And there cameH935 a traveller unto the richH6223 manH376, and he sparedH2550 to takeH3947 of his ownH376 flockH6629 and of his ownH376 herdH1241, to dress for the wayfaring manH376 that was comeH935 unto him, but tookH3947 the poorH7326 man’sH376 lambH3535, and dressed it for the manH376 that was comeH935 to him. 5And David’sH1732 angerH639 was greatlyH3966 kindledH2734 againstH413 the manH376; and he saidH559 to NathanH5416, As the LORDH3068 liveth, the manH376 that hath doneH6213 this is worthy to dieH4194: 6and he shall restore the lambH3535 fourfoldH706, becauseH5921 he didH6213 this thingH1697, and becauseH5921 he had noH3808 pityH2550. 7And NathanH5416 saidH559 to DavidH1732, Thou art the manH376. ThusH3541 saith the LORDH3068, the GodH430 of IsraelH3478, I anointedH4886 thee kingH4428 over IsraelH3478, and I deliveredH5337 thee outH5921 of the handH3027 of SaulH7586; 8and I gaveH5414 thee thy master’sH113 houseH1004, and thy master’sH113 wivesH802 intoH5414 thy bosomH2436, and gaveH5414 thee the houseH1004 of IsraelH3478 and of JudahH3063; and ifH518 that had been too littleH4592, I would have addedH3254 unto thee suchH2007 and suchH2007 things. 9Wherefore hast thou despisedH959 the wordH1697 of the LORDH3068, to doH6213 that whichH5869 is evilH7451 in his sightH5869? thou hast smittenH5221 UriahH223 the HittiteH2850 with the swordH2719, and hast takenH3947 his wifeH802 to be thy wifeH802, and hast slainH2026 him with the swordH2719 of the childrenH1121 of AmmonH5983. 10NowH6258 therefore, the swordH2719 shall neverH3808 departH5493 from thine houseH1004; becauseH3588 thou hast despisedH959 meH3947, and hast takenH3947 the wifeH802 of UriahH223 the HittiteH2850 to be thy wifeH802. 11ThusH3541 saith the LORDH3068, BeholdH2005, I will raiseH6965 upH6965 evilH7451 againstH5921 thee outH5921 of thine ownH5869 houseH1004, and I will takeH3947 thy wivesH802 beforeH5869 thine eyesH5869, and giveH5414 them unto thy neighbour, and he shall lieH7901 with thy wivesH802 in the sightH5869 of this sunH8121. 12For thou didst it secretly: but I will doH6213 this thingH1697 beforeH5048 allH3605 IsraelH3478, and beforeH5048 the sunH8121. 13And DavidH1732 saidH559 unto NathanH5416, I have sinnedH2398 againstH413 the LORDH3068. And NathanH5416 saidH559 unto DavidH1732, The LORDH3068 also hath putH4191 awayH5674 thy sinH2398; thou shalt notH3808 dieH4191. 14Howbeit, becauseH3588 by this deedH1697 thou hast givenH5006 great occasion to the enemiesH341 of the LORDH3068 to blasphemeH5006, the childH1121 also that is bornH3209 unto thee shall surelyH3588 dieH4191. 15And NathanH5416 departed unto his houseH1004. And the LORDH3068 struckH5062 the childH3206 that Uriah’sH223 wifeH802 bare unto DavidH1732, and it was very sickH605. 16DavidH1732 therefore besought GodH430 for the childH5288; and DavidH1732 fastedH6684, and wentH935 in, and layH7901 allH7901 night uponH935 the earthH776. 17And the eldersH2205 of his houseH1004 aroseH6965, and stoodH6965 besideH5921 him, to raiseH6965 him upH6965 from the earthH776: but he would notH3808, neitherH3808 didH3808 he eat breadH3899 with them. 18And it cameH1961 to passH1961 on the seventhH7637 dayH3117, that the childH3206 diedH4191. And the servantsH5650 of DavidH1732 fearedH3372 to tellH5046 him that the childH3206 was deadH4191: for they saidH559, BeholdH2009, whileH1961 the childH3206 was yet aliveH2416, weH3588 spake unto him, and he hearkened notH3808 unto our voiceH6963: howH349 will he then vex himselfH3117, ifH3588 weH3588 tellH5046 him that the childH3206 is deadH4191? 19But when DavidH1732 sawH7200 that his servantsH5650 whispered together, DavidH1732 perceivedH7200 that the childH3206 was deadH4191: and DavidH1732 saidH559 unto his servantsH5650, Is the childH3206 deadH4191? And they saidH559, He is deadH4191. 20Then DavidH1732 aroseH6965 from the earthH776, and washedH7364, and anointed himselfH7812, and changedH2498 his apparel; and he cameH935 intoH413 the houseH1004 of the LORDH3068, and worshipped: then he cameH935 to his own houseH1004; and when he requiredH7760 they setH7760 breadH3899 beforeH413 him, and he didH7812 eatH398. 21Then saidH559 his servantsH5650 unto him, WhatH4100 thingH1697 is this that thou hast doneH6213? thou didst fastH6684 and weepH1058 for the childH3206, whileH834 it was aliveH2416; but when the childH3206 was deadH4191, thou didst riseH6965 and eatH398 breadH3899. 22And he saidH559, WhileH5750 the childH3206 was yet aliveH2416, I fastedH6684 and weptH1058: for I saidH559, Who knoweth whether the LORDH3068 will notH3588 be gracious to meH2603, that the childH3206 may liveH2416? 23But nowH6258 he is deadH4191, wherefore should I fastH6684? canH3201 I bringH7725 him backH7725 againH5750? I shall goH1980 to him, but he shall notH3808 returnH7725 to meH413. 24And DavidH1732 comfortedH5162 Bath-sheba his wifeH802, and wentH935 in unto herH413, and layH7901 with herH413: and sheH7121 bare a sonH1121, and he calledH7121 his nameH8034 SolomonH8010. And the LORDH3068 lovedH157 him; 25and he sentH7971 by the handH3027 of NathanH5416 the prophetH5030, and he calledH7121 his nameH8034 JedidiahH3041, for the LORD’SH3068 sakeH5668. 26Now JoabH3097 foughtH3898 againstH3898 RabbahH7237 of the childrenH1121 of AmmonH5983, and tookH3920 the royalH4410 cityH5892. 27And JoabH3097 sentH7971 messengersH4397 to DavidH1732, and saidH559, I have foughtH3898 againstH413 RabbahH7237, yea, I have takenH3920 the cityH5892 of watersH4325. 28NowH6258 therefore gatherH622 the restH3499 of the peopleH5971 togetherH622, and encampH2583 againstH5921 the cityH5892, and takeH622 it: lestH6435 I takeH622 the cityH5892, and it be calledH7121 afterH5921 my nameH8034. 29And DavidH1732 gatheredH622 allH3605 the peopleH5971 togetherH622, and went to RabbahH7237, and foughtH3898 againstH3898 it, and tookH3920 it. 30And he tookH3947 the crownH5850 of their kingH4428 from offH5921 his headH7218; and the weightH4948 thereof was a talentH3603 of goldH2091, and in it were preciousH3368 stonesH68; and it was setH3318 on David’sH1732 headH7218. And he broughtH3318 forthH3318 the spoilH7998 of the cityH5892, exceedingH3966 muchH7235. 31And he broughtH3318 forthH3318 the peopleH5971 that were therein, and putH7760 them underH3389 sawsH4050, and underH3389 harrows of ironH1270, and underH3389 axesH4037 of ironH1270, and madeH6213 them passH5674 throughH5674 the brickkilnH4404: and thusH3651 didH6213 he unto allH3605 the citiesH5892 of the childrenH1121 of AmmonH5983. And DavidH1732 and allH3605 the peopleH5971 returnedH7725 unto JerusalemH3389.
