Jeremiah 20
Pashhur Persecutes Jeremiah
1When PashhurH6583 the priestH3548, the sonH1121 of 1ImmerH564, whoH1931 was 2chiefH5057 overseerH6496 in the houseH1004 of the LordH3068, heardH8085 JeremiahH3414 prophesyingH5012 theseH428 thingsH1697, 2PashhurH6583 had JeremiahH3414 the prophetH5030 3beatenH5221 and putH5414 him in the 4stocksH4115 that were at the upperH5945 5BenjaminH1144 GateH8179, whichH834 was by the houseH1004 of the LordH3068. 3Then on the nextH4283 dayH4283, when PashhurH6583 releasedH3318 JeremiahH3414 from the stocksH4115, JeremiahH3414 saidH559 to him, “PashhurH6583 is not the nameH8034 the LordH3068 has 6calledH7121 you, but ratherH3588H518 78Magor-missabibH4036. 4For thisH3541 isH3541 whatH3541 the LordH3068 saysH559: ‘BeholdH2009, I am going to makeH5414 you a 9horrorH4032 to yourself and to allH3605 your friendsH157; and while 10your eyesH5869 lookH7200 on, they will fallH5307 by the swordH2719 of their enemiesH340. So I will 11handH5414H3027 allH3605 JudahH3063 overH5414 to the kingH4428 of BabylonH894, and he will takeH1540 them awayH1540 asH1540 12exilesH1540 to BabylonH894 and will killH5221 them with the swordH2719. 5I will also giveH5414 allH3605 the 13wealthH2633 of thisH2088 cityH5892, allH3605 its produceH3018 and allH3605 its valuableH3366 thingsH3366--even allH3605 the treasuresH214 of the kingsH4428 of JudahH3063 I will 14handH5414H3027 overH5414 to their enemiesH340, and they will plunderH962 them, takeH3947 them away, and bringH935 them to BabylonH894. 6And you, 15PashhurH6583, and allH3605 who liveH3427 in your houseH1004 will goH1980 into captivityH7628; and you will enterH935 BabylonH894, and thereH8033 you will dieH4191 and thereH8033 you will be buriedH6912, you and allH3605 your 16friendsH157 to whomH834 you have 17falselyH8267 prophesiedH5012.’”
Jeremiah’s Complaint
7LordH3068, You persuadedH6601 me and I let myself be persuadedH6601; You have 18overcomeH2388 me and prevailedH3201. I have becomeH1961 a 19laughingstockH7814 allH3605 dayH3117 long; EveryoneH3605 20mocksH3932 me.8For eachH1767 timeH1767 I speakH1696, I cryH2199 aloudH2199; I 21proclaimH7121 violenceH2555 and destructionH7701, BecauseH3588 for me the 22wordH1697 of the LordH3068 has 23resultedH1961 In tauntingH2781 and derisionH7047 allH3605 dayH3117 long.9But if I sayH559, “I will not 24rememberH2142 Him NorH3808 speakH1696 anymoreH5750 in His nameH8034,” Then in 25my heartH3820 it becomesH1961 like a burningH1197 fireH784 ShutH6113 upH6113 in my bonesH6106; And I amH3811 tiredH3811 of holdingH3557 it in, And 26I cannotH3808 endureH3201 it.10For 27I have heardH8085 the whisperingH1681 of manyH7227, “28TerrorH4032 on everyH5439 sideH5439! 29DenounceH5046 him; let’s denounceH5046 him!” 30AllH3605 my 31trustedH7965 friendsH582H7965, WatchingH8104 for my fallH6761, say: “PerhapsH194 he will be persuadedH6601, so that we may 32prevailH3201 against him And takeH3947 our revengeH5360 on him.”11But the 33LordH3068 is with me like a powerfulH6184 championH1368; ThereforeH5921H3651 my 34persecutorsH7291 will stumbleH3782 and not prevailH3201. They will be putH954 toH954 greatH3966 shameH954 becauseH3588 they have 35failedH3808H7919, An 36everlastingH5769 disgraceH3639 that will not be forgottenH7911.12Yet, LordH3068 of armiesH6635, who 37testsH974 the righteousH6662, Who seesH7200 the 38mindH3629 and the heartH3820; Let me 39seeH7200 Your vengeanceH5360 on them, For 40to You I have disclosedH1540 my causeH7379.1341SingH7891 to the LordH3068, praiseH1984 the LordH3068! For He has 42savedH5337 the soulH5315 of the needyH34 oneH34 From the handH3027 of evildoersH7489.
14CursedH779 be the 43dayH3117 whenH834 I was bornH3205; May the dayH3117 whenH834 my motherH517 gaveH3205 birthH3205 to me not be blessedH1288!15CursedH779 be the manH376 whoH834 broughtH1319 the newsH1319 To my fatherH1, sayingH559, “A 4445boyH1121H2145 has been bornH3205 to you!” And madeH8055 him veryH8055 happyH8055.16But may that manH376 be like the citiesH5892 WhichH834 the LordH3068 46overthrewH2015 withoutH3808 47relentingH5162, And may he hearH8085 an 48outcryH2201 in the morningH1242 And 49an alarmH8643 forH8643 warH8643 at noonH6672;17BecauseH834 he did not 50killH4191 me 51beforeH4480 birthH7358, So that my motherH517 would have beenH1961 my graveH6913, And her wombH7358 foreverH5769 pregnantH2030.18WhyH4100 did I everH2088 comeH3318 outH3318 of the wombH7358 To 52lookH7200 at troubleH5999 and sorrowH3015, So that my 53daysH3117 have been spentH3615 in 54shameH1322?
