Jeremiah 16
Distresses Foretold
1The wordH1697 of the LordH3068 also cameH1961 to me, sayingH559, 2“You shall not take a wifeH802 for yourself norH3808 haveH1961 sonsH1121 or daughtersH1323 in thisH2088 placeH4725.” 3For thisH3541 isH3541 whatH3541 the LordH3068 saysH559 concerningH5921 the sonsH1121 and daughtersH1323 bornH3209 in thisH2088 placeH4725, and concerningH5921 their 1mothersH517 who giveH3205 birthH3205 to them, and their 2fathersH1 who fatherH3205 them inH3205 thisH2088 landH776: 4“They will 3dieH4191 of deadlyH4463 diseasesH8463, they 4will not be mournedH5594 or buriedH6912; they will be like 5dungH1828 on the surfaceH6440 of the groundH127. And they will perishH3615 by swordH2719 and famineH7458, and their deadH5038 bodiesH5038 will becomeH1961 foodH3978 for the 6birdsH5775 of the skyH8064 and for the animalsH929 of the earthH776.”
5For thisH3541 isH3541 whatH3541 the LordH3068 saysH559: “Do not enterH935 a houseH1004 of 7mourningH4798, or goH1980 to mournH5594 or to consoleH5110 them; for I have 8withdrawnH622 My peaceH7965 from thisH2088 peopleH5971,” declaresH5002 the LordH3068, “and My 9favorH2617 and compassionH7356. 6Both 10greatH1419 peopleH1419 and smallH6996 will dieH4191 in thisH2088 landH776; they will not be buriedH6912, people will not mournH5594 for them, norH3808 will anyone 11makeH1413 cutsH1413 on himself or have his headH7139 12shavedH7139 for them. 7People will not 13breakH6536 bread in mourningH60 for them, to comfortH5162 anyone for the deadH4191, norH3808 giveH8248 them a cupH3563 of consolationH8575 toH8248 drinkH8248 for anyone’s fatherH1 or motherH517. 8Moreover, you shall 14not goH935 into a houseH1004 of feastingH4960 to sitH3427 with them to eatH398 and drinkH8354.” 9For thisH3541 isH3541 whatH3541 the LordH3068 of armiesH6635, the GodH430 of IsraelH3478 saysH559: “BeholdH2009, I am going to 15eliminateH7673 from thisH2088 placeH4725, before your eyesH5869 and in your timeH3117, the voiceH6963 of rejoicingH8342 and the voiceH6963 of joyH8057, the voiceH6963 of the groomH2860 and the voiceH6963 of the brideH3618.
10“Now it will happenH1961 that, whenH3588 you tellH5046 thisH2088 peopleH5971 allH3605 theseH428 wordsH1697, they will sayH559 to you, ‘16ForH5921 whatH4100 reasonH5921H4100 has the LordH3068 declaredH1696 allH3605 thisH2088 greatH1419 disasterH7463 againstH5921 us? And whatH4100 is our wrongdoingH5771, or whatH4100 is our sinH2403 that we have committedH2398 against the LordH3068 our GodH430?’ 11Then you are to sayH559 to them, ‘It is 17becauseH5921H834 your forefathersH1 have abandonedH5800 Me,’ declaresH5002 the LordH3068, ‘and have followedH1980H310 18otherH312 godsH430, and servedH5647 and worshipedH2331 them; but they have abandonedH5800 Me and have not keptH8104 My LawH8451. 12You too have doneH6213 evilH7451, even 19moreH4480 thanH4480 your forefathersH1; for beholdH2009, eachH376 oneH376 of you is followingH1980H310 the 20stubbornnessH8307 of his own 21evilH7451 heartH3820, withoutH1115 listeningH8085 to Me. 13So I will 22hurlH2904 you offH4480H5921 thisH2088 landH776 to the 23landH776 whichH834 you have not knownH3045, neither you norH3808 your fathersH1; and thereH8033 you will 24serveH5647 otherH312 godsH430 dayH3119 and nightH3915, becauseH834 I will showH5414 you noH3808 compassionH2594.’
God Will Restore Them
14“25ThereforeH3651 beholdH2009, daysH3117 are comingH935,” declaresH5002 the LordH3068, “when it will noH3808 longerH5750 be saidH559, ‘As the LordH3068 livesH2416, whoH834 26broughtH5927 upH5927 the sonsH1121 of IsraelH3478 out of the landH776 of EgyptH4714,’ 15but, ‘As the LordH3068 livesH2416, whoH834 broughtH5927 upH5927 the sonsH1121 of IsraelH3478 from the 27landH776 of the northH6828 and from allH3605 the landsH776 whereH834H8033 He had banishedH5080 them.’ For I will restoreH7725 them to their own landH127 whichH834 I gaveH5414 to their fathersH1.
16“BeholdH2009, I am going to sendH7971 for manyH7227 28fishermenH1728,” declaresH5002 the LordH3068, “and they will fishH1770 for them; and afterwardH310H3651 I will sendH7971 for manyH7227 huntersH6719, and they will 29huntH6679 them 30from everyH3605 mountainH2022 and everyH3605 hillH1389 and from the cleftsH5357 of the rocksH5553. 1731For My eyesH5869 are on allH3605 their waysH1870; they are not hiddenH5641 from My faceH6440, 32norH3808 is their wrongdoingH5771 concealedH6845 from My eyesH5869. 18I will firstH7223 repayH7999 them 33doubleH4932 for their wrongdoingH5771 and their sinH2403, becauseH5921 they have 34defiledH2490 My landH776; they have filledH4390 My inheritanceH5159 with the carcassesH5038 of their 35detestableH8251 idolsH8251 and their abominationsH8441.”
19LordH3068, my 36strengthH5797 and my strongholdH4581, And my 37refugeH4498 in the dayH3117 of distressH6869, To You the 38nationsH1471 will comeH935 From the endsH657 of the earthH776 and sayH559, “Our fathersH1 have inheritedH5157 nothingH389 butH389 39falsehoodH8267, FutilityH1892, and 4041things of noH369 benefitH3276.”20Can a personH120 makeH6213 godsH430 for himself? But they are 42not godsH430!
21“ThereforeH3651 beholdH2009, I am going to make them knowH3045-- ThisH2088 timeH6471 I will 43make them knowH3045 My 44powerH3027 and My mightH1369; And they will 45knowH3045 that My nameH8034 is the LordH3068.”
