Context of Jeremiah 15:13

11The Lord said, “I will certainly set you free for purposes of good; I will certainly make the enemy plead with you In a time of disaster and a time of distress. 12“Can anyone smash iron, Iron from the north, or bronze? I will give your wealth and your treasures As plunder without cost, For all your sins And within all your borders. 14Then I will make your enemies bring your possessions Into a land that you do not know; For a fire has been kindled in My anger, And it will burn upon you.” 15You know, Lord; Remember me, take notice of me, And take vengeance for me on my persecutors. Do not, in view of Your patience, take me away; Know that for Your sake I endure reproach.

• Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 13Jeremiah is personally addressed in the verse, because he stood before God as the intercessor, representing the people. (1) God would give Judah‘s treasures away for nothing; implying that He did not value them. (2) the cause of this contempt is Judah‘s sins. (3) this is justified by Judah having committed them throughout her whole land.Read the comment
• Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 10-14Verses 10-14 Jeremiah met with much contempt and reproach, when they ought to have blessed him, and God for him. It is a great and sufficient support to the people of God, that however troublesome their way may be, it shall be well with them in their latter end. God turns to the people. Shall the most hardy and vigorous of their efforts be able to contend with the counsel of God, or with the army of the Chaldeans? Let them hear their doom. The enemy will…Read the comment
• Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 13-14It is unclear if the Lord was speaking about Jeremiah's future or Judah's future. If about Jeremiah, this prediction came true after Jerusalem fell in 586 BC, when Jeremiah and Baruch were taken to Egypt against their will (see Jeremiah 41–44). If it refers to Judah's future, the prediction came true with the fall of Jerusalem and the Exile.Read the comment
