Context of Exodus 38:8

6He made the poles of acacia wood and overlaid them with bronze. 7Then he inserted the poles into the rings on the sides of the altar, with which to carry it. He made it hollow with planks. Moreover, he made the basin of bronze with its base of bronze, from the mirrors of the serving women who served at the doorway of the tent of meeting. 9Then he made the courtyard: for the south side the hangings of the courtyard were of fine twisted linen, a hundred cubits; 10their twenty pillars, and their twenty bases, were made of bronze; the hooks of the pillars and their bands were of silver.

Commentaries on Exodus 38:8

• Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 8He made the laver - See Clarke's note on Exodus 30:18, etc. The looking-glasses - The word מראת maroth, from ראה raah, he saw, signifies reflectors or mirrors of any kind. Here metal, highly polished, must certainly be meant, as glass was not yet in use; and had it even been in use, we are sure that looking - Glasses could not make a Brazen laver. The word therefore should be rendered mirrors, not looking-glasses, which in the above verse is perfectly…Read the comment

The giving up of their mirrors for the use of the sanctuary was a fit sacrifice for such women to make (compare Exodus 35:22 note).Read the comment
• Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 8The plans for the bronze basin were part of the instructions to the priests (30:17–21; 29:38–30:38). Here, however, the text reports how the basin was built, following a logical order. This bronze, which they could polish to look like mirrors, was probably of very high quality. It was suitable for use in God's Tent of Meeting.Read the comment

It was customary for the Egyptian women to carry mirrors with them to the temples; and whether by taking the looking glasses of the Hebrew women Moses designed to put it out of their power to follow a…Read the comment
