Saul and the Spirit Medium
1Now it cameH1961 aboutH1961 in thoseH1992 daysH3117 that 1the PhilistinesH6430 gatheredH6908 their armed campsH4264 for warH6635, to fightH3898 against IsraelH3478. And AchishH397 saidH559 to DavidH1732, “KnowH3045 forH3045 certainH3045 that you will goH3318 outH3318 with me in the campH4264, you and your menH376.” 2DavidH1732 saidH559 to AchishH397, “VeryH3651 wellH3651, you will learnH3045 whatH834 your servantH5650 can doH6213.” So AchishH397 saidH559 to DavidH1732, “Then I will assuredlyH3651 makeH7760 you 2my bodyguardH8104H7218 3for 4lifeH3605H3117!”
3Now 5SamuelH8050 was deadH4191, and allH3605 IsraelH3478 had mournedH5594 him and buriedH6912 him 6in RamahH7414, his own cityH5892. And SaulH7586 had removedH5493 the 7mediumsH178 and spiritistsH3049 from the landH776. 4So the PhilistinesH6430 assembledH6908 and cameH935 and campedH2583 8in ShunemH7766; and SaulH7586 gatheredH6908 allH3605 IsraelH3478 together, and they campedH2583 in 9GilboaH1533. 5When SaulH7586 sawH7200 the campH4264 of the PhilistinesH6430, he wasH3372 afraidH3372 and his heartH3820 trembledH2729 greatlyH3966. 610So SaulH7586 inquiredH7592 of the LordH3068, but 11the LordH3068 did not answerH6030 him, eitherH1571 in 12dreamsH2472, orH1571 by the 13UrimH224, orH1571 by the prophetsH5030. 7Then SaulH7586 saidH559 to his servantsH5650, “FindH1875 for me a womanH802 who is a mediumH1172H178, so that I may goH1980 to her and inquireH1875 of her.” And his servantsH5650 saidH559 to him, “BeholdH2009, 14there is a womanH802 who is a mediumH1172H178 at 15En-dorH5874.”
8Then SaulH7586 16disguisedH2664 himself by puttingH3847 onH3847 differentH312 clothesH899, and wentH1980, he and twoH8147 menH376 with him, and they cameH935 to the womanH802 by nightH3915; and he saidH559, “17ConsultH7080 the spiritH178 for me, pleaseH4994, and 18bringH5927 upH5927 for me the one whomH834 I shall 19nameH559 for you.” 9But the womanH802 saidH559 to him, “BeholdH2009, you knowH3045 20whatH834 SaulH7586 has doneH6213, that he has eliminatedH3772 the mediumsH178 and spiritistsH3049 from the landH776. WhyH4100 are you then settingH5367 aH5367 trapH5367 for my lifeH5315, to bringH4191 aboutH4191 my deathH4191?” 10So SaulH7586 sworeH7650 anH7650 oathH7650 to her by the LordH3068, sayingH559, “As the LordH3068 livesH2416, noH518 punishmentH5771 shall comeH7136 uponH7136 you for thisH2088 thingH1697.” 11Then the womanH802 saidH559, “WhomH4310 shall I bringH5927 upH5927 for you?” And he saidH559, “BringH5927 upH5927 SamuelH8050 for me.” 12When the womanH802 sawH7200 SamuelH8050, she criedH2199 outH2199 with a loudH1419 voiceH6963; and the womanH802 spokeH559 to SaulH7586, sayingH559, “WhyH4100 have you deceivedH7411 me? For you are SaulH7586!” 13But the kingH4428 saidH559 to her, “Do not beH3372 afraidH3372; but whatH4100 do you seeH7200?” And the womanH802 saidH559 to SaulH7586, “I seeH7200 a 21divineH430 beingH430 comingH5927 upH5927 from the earthH776.” 14He saidH559 to her, “22HowH4100 does he appearH8389?” And she saidH559, “An oldH2205 manH376 is comingH5927 upH5927, and 23he is wrappedH5844 in a robeH4598.” Then SaulH7586 knewH3045 that it was SamuelH8050, and 24he bowedH6915 with his faceH639 to the groundH776 and paidH2331 25homageH2331.
15And SamuelH8050 saidH559 to SaulH7586, “WhyH4100 have you disturbedH7264 me by bringingH5927 me upH5927?” SaulH7586 repliedH559, “I amH6887 veryH3966 distressedH6887, for the PhilistinesH6430 are wagingH3898 warH3898 against me, and 26GodH430 has abandonedH5493 me and 27noH3808 longerH5750 answersH6030 me, eitherH1571 throughH3027 prophetsH5030 orH1571 in dreamsH2472; therefore I have calledH7121 you, so that you may letH3045 me knowH3045 whatH4100 I should doH6213.” 16SamuelH8050 saidH559, “But whyH4100 askH7592 me, since the LordH3068 has abandonedH5493 you and has becomeH1961 your enemyH6145? 17And the LordH3068 has doneH6213 28justH3512 29as He spokeH1696 throughH3027 me; for the LordH3068 has tornH7167 the kingdomH4467 from your handH3027 and givenH5414 it to your neighborH7453, to DavidH1732. 18JustH3512 asH3512 30you did not 31obeyH8085H6963 the LordH3068 and did not executeH6213 His fierceH2740 wrathH639 on AmalekH6002, soH5921H3651 the LordH3068 has doneH6213 thisH2088 thingH1697 to you thisH2088 dayH3117. 19Furthermore, the LordH3068 will alsoH1571 handH5414H3027 IsraelH3478 alongH5973 withH5973 you overH5414 to the PhilistinesH6430; so tomorrowH4279 32you and your sonsH1121 will be with me. IndeedH1571, the LordH3068 will handH5414H3027 the armyH4264 of IsraelH3478 overH5414 to the PhilistinesH6430!”
20Then SaulH7586 immediatelyH4116 fellH5307 fullH4393 lengthH6967 to the groundH776 and wasH3372 veryH3966 afraidH3372 becauseH4480 of Samuel’sH8050 wordsH1697; there was noH3808 strengthH3581 in him eitherH1571, becauseH3588 he had eatenH398 noH3808 33foodH3899 allH3605 dayH3117 and allH3605 nightH3915. 21The womanH802 cameH935 to SaulH7586 and sawH7200 that he was utterlyH3966 horrifiedH926, and she saidH559 to him, “BeholdH2009, your servantH8198 has 34obeyedH8085H6963 you, and 35I have 36takenH7760 my lifeH5315 in my handH3709 and have listenedH8085 to your wordsH1697 whichH834 you spokeH1696 to me. 22So nowH6258 you tooH1571, pleaseH4994 listenH8085 to the voiceH6963 of your servantH8198, and let me serveH7760H6440 you a pieceH6595 of breadH3899, and eatH398 it, so that you will haveH1961 strengthH3581 whenH3588 you goH1980 on your wayH1870.” 23But he refusedH3985 and saidH559, “37I will not eatH398.” 38However, his servantsH5650 togetherH1571 with the womanH802 urgedH6555 him, and he listenedH8085 to 39them. So he gotH6965 upH6965 from the groundH776 and satH3427 on 40the bedH4296. 24Now the womanH802 had a 41fattenedH4770 calfH5695 in the houseH1004, and she quicklyH4116 slaughteredH2076 it; then she 42tookH3947 flourH7058, kneadedH3888 it and bakedH644 unleavenedH4682 breadH4682 from it. 25She then servedH5066H6440 it to SaulH7586 and his servantsH5650, and they ateH398. Then they gotH6965 upH6965 and leftH1980 that nightH3915.
