War with the Philistines
1SaulH7586 was 1thirty yearsH8141 oldH1121 when he began to reignH4427, and he reignedH4427 for 2forty-twoH8147 yearsH8141 overH5921 IsraelH3478.
2Now SaulH7586 choseH977 for himself threeH7969 thousandH505 men of IsraelH3478, of whom twoH505 thousandH505 were with SaulH7586 in 3MichmashH4363 and in the hillH2022 countryH2022 of BethelH1008, while a thousandH505 were with JonathanH3083 at 4GibeahH1390 of BenjaminH1144. But he sentH7971 the restH3499 of the peopleH5971 awayH7971, eachH376 to his tentH168. 3And JonathanH3083 attackedH5221 5the garrisonH5333 of the PhilistinesH6430 that was in 6GebaH1387, and the PhilistinesH6430 heardH8085 about it. Then SaulH7586 7blewH8628 the trumpetH7782 throughoutH3605 the landH776, sayingH559, “Let the HebrewsH5680 hearH8085!” 4And allH3605 IsraelH3478 heardH8085 8the newsH559 that SaulH7586 had attackedH5221 the garrisonH5333 of the PhilistinesH6430, and alsoH1571 that IsraelH3478 9had becomeH887 repulsiveH887 to the PhilistinesH6430. Then the peopleH5971 were summonedH6817 10to SaulH7586 at GilgalH1537.
5Now the PhilistinesH6430 assembledH622 to fightH3898 with IsraelH3478, thirtyH7970 thousandH505 chariotsH7393 and sixH8337 thousandH505 horsemenH6571, and 11peopleH5971 like the sandH2344 whichH834 is on the seashoreH3220H8193 in abundanceH7230; and they cameH5927 upH5927 and campedH2583 in MichmashH4363, eastH6926 of 12Beth-avenH1007. 6When the menH376 of IsraelH3478 sawH7200 that they were in troubleH6862 (for the peopleH5971 were hard-pressedH5065), then 13the peopleH5971 keptH2244 themselves hiddenH2244 in cavesH4631, in crevicesH2336, in cliffsH5553, in cryptsH6877, and in pitsH953. 7And some of the HebrewsH5680 crossedH5674 the JordanH3383 into the landH776 of 14GadH1410 and GileadH1568. But as for SaulH7586, he was stillH5750 in GilgalH1537, and allH3605 the peopleH5971 followedH310 him, tremblingH2729.
8Now 15he waitedH3176 for sevenH7651 daysH3117, until the appointedH4150 timeH4150 that SamuelH8050 had set, but SamuelH8050 did not comeH935 to GilgalH1537; and the peopleH5971 were scatteringH6327 from him. 9So SaulH7586 saidH559, “BringH5066 me the burntH5930 offeringH5930 and the peaceH8002 offeringsH8002.” And 16he offeredH5927 the burntH5930 offeringH5930. 10But as soon as he finishedH3615 offeringH5927 the burntH5930 offeringH5930, beholdH2009, SamuelH8050 cameH935; and 17SaulH7586 wentH3318 outH3318 to meetH7122 him and to 18greetH1288 him. 11But SamuelH8050 saidH559, “WhatH4100 have you doneH6213?” And SaulH7586 saidH559, “SinceH3588 I sawH7200 that the peopleH5971 were scatteringH5310 from me, and that you did not comeH935 at the appointedH4150 19timeH4150, and that 20the PhilistinesH6430 were assemblingH622 at MichmashH4363, 12I 21thoughtH559, ‘NowH6258 the PhilistinesH6430 will comeH3381 downH3381 againstH413 me at GilgalH1537, and I have not 22askedH2470 the favorH6440 of the LordH3068.’ So I workedH662 upH662 theH662 courageH662 and offeredH5927 the burntH5930 offeringH5930.” 13But SamuelH8050 saidH559 to SaulH7586, “23You have actedH5528 foolishlyH5528! 24You have not keptH8104 the commandmentH4687 of the LordH3068 your GodH430, whichH834 He commandedH6680 you, for the LordH3068 would nowH6258 have establishedH3559 your kingdomH4467 25overH413 IsraelH3478 26foreverH5704H5769. 14But 27nowH6258 your kingdomH4467 shall not endureH6965. 28The LordH3068 has soughtH1245 for Himself a manH376 29after His own heartH3824, and the LordH3068 has appointedH6680 him rulerH5057 overH5921 His peopleH5971, becauseH3588 you have not keptH8104 whatH834 the LordH3068 commandedH6680 you.”
15Then SamuelH8050 setH6965 outH6965 and wentH5927 upH5927 from GilgalH1537 to 30GibeahH1390 of BenjaminH1144. And SaulH7586 31countedH6485 the peopleH5971 who wereH4672 32presentH4672 with him, 33about sixH8337 hundredH3967 menH376. 16Now SaulH7586, his sonH1121 JonathanH3083, and the peopleH5971 who wereH4672 34presentH4672 with them were stayingH3427 in 35GebaH1387 of BenjaminH1144 while the PhilistinesH6430 campedH2583 at MichmashH4363. 17Then 3637raidersH4889 cameH3318 from the campH4264 of the PhilistinesH6430 in threeH7969 38companiesH7218: oneH259 39companyH7218 turnedH6437 40towardH413H1870 41OphrahH6084, to the landH776 of ShualH7777, 18and anotherH259 42companyH7218 turnedH6437 43towardH1870 44Beth-horonH1032, and anotherH259 45companyH7218 turnedH6437 46towardH1870 the borderH1366 that overlooksH8259H5921 the ValleyH1516 of 47ZeboimH6650 toward the wildernessH4057.
19Now 48noH3808 blacksmithH2796 could be foundH4672 in allH3605 the landH776 of IsraelH3478, becauseH3588 the PhilistinesH6430 saidH559, “OtherwiseH6435 the HebrewsH5680 will makeH6213 4950swordsH2719 orH176 spearsH2595.” 20So allH3605 IsraelH3478 wentH3381 downH3381 to the PhilistinesH6430, eachH376 to sharpenH3913 his plowshareH4282, his mattockH855, his axeH7134, and his hoeH4281. 21The chargeH6477 was 51two-thirdsH6371 ofH6371 aH6371 shekelH6371 for the plowsharesH4281, the mattocksH855, the forksH7969H7053, and the axesH7134, and to fixH5324 the 52cattleH1861 goadsH1861. 22So it cameH1961 aboutH1961 on the dayH3117 of battleH4421 that 53neitherH3808 swordH2719 norH3808 spearH2595 was foundH4672 in the handsH3027 of anyH3605 of the peopleH5971 whoH834 were with SaulH7586 and JonathanH3083, but they were foundH4672 with SaulH7586 and his sonH1121 JonathanH3083. 23And 54the garrisonH4673 of the PhilistinesH6430 wentH3318 outH3318 to 55the gorgeH4569 of MichmashH4363.
