Saul among the Prophets

1Then 1SamuelH8050 tookH3947 the flaskH6378 of oilH8081, pouredH3332 it on 2Saul’s headH7218, 3kissedH5401 him, and saidH559, “Has 4the LordH3068 not anointedH4886 you as rulerH5057 overH5921 5His inheritanceH5159? 2When you leaveH1980H4480 me todayH3117, then you will findH4672 twoH8147 menH376 closeH5973 to 6Rachel’sH7354 tombH6900 in the territoryH1366 of BenjaminH1144 at ZelzahH6766; and they will sayH559 to you, ‘7The donkeysH860 whichH834 you wentH1980 to lookH1245 forH1245 have been foundH4672. Now beholdH2009, your fatherH1 has stoppedH5203 talkingH1697 about the donkeysH860 and isH1672 anxiousH1672 about you, sayingH559, “WhatH4100 am I to doH6213 about my sonH1121?”’ 3Then you will goH2498 onH2498 fartherH1973 from thereH8033, and you will comeH935 as farH5704 as the 89oakH436 of TaborH8396, and thereH8033 threeH7969 menH376 goingH5927 upH5927 10to GodH430 at BethelH1008 will meetH4672 you: oneH259 carryingH5375 threeH7969 youngH1423 goatsH1423, anotherH259 carryingH5375 threeH7969 loavesH3603 of breadH3899, and anotherH259 carryingH5375 a jugH5035 of wineH3196. 4And they will 11greetH7592H7965 you and giveH5414 you twoH8147 loaves of breadH3899, which you will acceptH3947 from their handH3027. 5AfterwardH310H3651 you will comeH935 to 1213the hillH1389 of GodH430 whereH834H8033 the PhilistineH6430 garrisonH5333 is; and it shall be as soon as you have comeH935 thereH8033 to the cityH5892, that you will meetH6293 14a groupH2256 of prophetsH5030 comingH3381 downH3381 from the highH1116 placeH1116 with harpH5035, tambourineH8596, fluteH2485, and a lyreH3658 in frontH6440 of them, and 15they will be prophesyingH5012. 6Then 16the SpiritH7307 of the LordH3068 will rushH6743 uponH5921 you, and 17you will prophesyH5012 with them and be changedH2015 into a differentH312 manH376. 7And it shall be whenH3588 theseH428 signsH226 comeH935 to you, 18doH6213 for yourself whatH834 19the occasionH3027 requiresH4672, becauseH3588 20GodH430 is with you. 8And 21you shall goH3381 downH3381 aheadH6440 of me to GilgalH1537; and beholdH2009, I will be comingH3381 downH3381 to you to offerH5927 burntH5930 offeringsH5930 and 22sacrificeH2076 peaceH8002 offeringsH8002. 23You shall waitH3176 sevenH7651 daysH3117 untilH5704 I comeH935 to you and informH3045 you of whatH834 you should doH6213.”

9Then it happenedH1961, when he turnedH6437 his backH7926 to leaveH1980H4480H5973 SamuelH8050, that GodH430 24changedH2015 25his heartH3820; and allH3605 thoseH428 signsH226 cameH935 aboutH935 on that dayH3117. 1026When they cameH935 thereH8033 to 27the hillH1389, beholdH2009, a groupH2256 of prophetsH5030 metH7122 him; and the SpiritH7307 of GodH430 rushedH6743 uponH5921 him, so that he prophesiedH5012 amongH8432 them. 11And it cameH1961 aboutH1961, when allH3605 who previouslyH4480H8032H865 knewH3045 him sawH7200 that he was indeedH2009 prophesyingH5012 with the prophetsH5030, that the peopleH5971 saidH559 to oneH376 anotherH7453, “WhatH4100 is thisH2088 that has happenedH1961 to the sonH1121 of KishH7027? 28Is SaulH7586 alsoH1571 among the prophetsH5030?” 12And a manH376 from thereH8033 respondedH6030 and saidH559, “And whoH4310 is their fatherH1?” ThereforeH5921H3651 it becameH1961 a sayingH4912: “29Is SaulH7586 alsoH1571 among the prophetsH5030?” 13When he had finishedH3615 prophesyingH5012, he cameH935 to the highH1116 placeH1116.

14Now 30Saul’sH7586 uncleH1730 saidH559 to him and his servantH5288, “WhereH575 did you goH1980?” And he saidH559, “31To lookH1245 forH1245 the donkeysH860. When we sawH7200 that they were nowhereH369 to be found, we wentH935 to SamuelH8050.” 15Saul’sH7586 uncleH1730 saidH559, “PleaseH4994 tellH5046 me whatH4100 SamuelH8050 saidH559 to you.” 16So SaulH7586 saidH559 to his uncleH1730, “32He toldH5046 us plainlyH5046 that the donkeysH860 had been foundH4672.” But he did not tellH5046 him about the matterH1697 of the kingdomH4410 whichH834 SamuelH8050 had mentionedH559.

Saul Publicly Chosen King

17Now SamuelH8050 calledH6817 the 33peopleH5971 togetherH6817 to the LordH3068 at MizpahH4709; 18and he saidH559 to the sonsH1121 of IsraelH3478, “34ThisH3541 isH3541 whatH3541 the LordH3068, the GodH430 of IsraelH3478 saysH559: ‘I broughtH5927 IsraelH3478 upH5927 from EgyptH4714, and I rescuedH5337 you from the handH3027 of the EgyptiansH4714 and from the 35powerH3027 of allH3605 the kingdomsH4467 that were oppressingH3905 you.’ 19But todayH3117 you 36have rejectedH3988 your GodH430, whoH834 savesH3467 you from allH3605 your catastrophesH7463 and your distressesH6869; yet you have 37saidH559, ‘NoH3808, but putH7760 a kingH4428 overH5921 us!’ NowH6258 then, 38presentH3320 yourselves beforeH6440 the LordH3068 by your tribesH7626 and by your 39groupsH505 ofH505 thousandsH505.”

20So SamuelH8050 broughtH7126 allH3605 the tribesH7626 of IsraelH3478 forwardH7126; and the tribeH7626 of BenjaminH1144 was selectedH3920 byH3920 lotH3920. 21Then he broughtH7126 the tribeH7626 of BenjaminH1144 forwardH7126 by its familiesH4940, and the MatriteH4309 familyH4940 was selectedH3920 byH3920 lotH3920. And SaulH7586 the sonH1121 of KishH7027 was selectedH3920 byH3920 lotH3920; but when they lookedH1245 forH1245 him, he could not be foundH4672. 22Therefore 40they inquiredH7592 furtherH5750 of the LordH3068: “Has the manH376 comeH935 hereH1988 yetH5750?” And the LordH3068 saidH559, “BeholdH2009, he is hidingH2244 himselfH1931 amongH413 the baggageH3627.” 23So they ranH7323 and tookH3947 him from thereH8033, and when he stoodH3320 amongH8432 the peopleH5971, 41he wasH1361 tallerH1361 thanH4480 anyH3605 of the peopleH5971 from his shouldersH7926 upwardH4605. 24SamuelH8050 saidH559 to allH3605 the peopleH5971, “Do you seeH7200 him 42whomH834 the LordH3068 has chosenH977? SurelyH3588 thereH369 isH369 noH369 oneH369 likeH3644 him among allH3605 the peopleH5971.” So allH3605 the peopleH5971 shoutedH7321 and saidH559, “4344Long liveH2421 the kingH4428!”

25Then SamuelH8050 toldH1696 the peopleH5971 45the ordinancesH4941 of the kingdomH4410, and wroteH3789 them in the bookH5612, and 46placedH5117 it beforeH6440 the LordH3068. And SamuelH8050 sentH7971 allH3605 the peopleH5971 awayH7971, eachH376 oneH376 to his houseH1004. 26SaulH7586 alsoH1571 wentH1980 47to his houseH1004 in GibeahH1390; and the valiantH2428 men whoseH834 heartsH3820 GodH430 had touchedH5060 wentH1980 with him. 27But certain 4849uselessH1100 menH1121 saidH559, “HowH4100 can thisH2088 oneH2088 saveH3467 us?” And they despisedH959 him and 50did not bringH935 him a giftH4503. But 51he keptH2790 silentH2790 about it.
