The Philistines Mistrust David
1Now 1the PhilistinesH6430 gatheredH6908 together allH3605 their armiesH4264 to 2AphekH663, while the IsraelitesH3478 were campingH2583 by the springH5871 whichH834 is in 3JezreelH3157. 2And the governorsH5633 of the PhilistinesH6430 were proceedingH5674 onH5674, leading hundredsH3967 and thousandsH505, and 4DavidH1732 and his menH376 were proceedingH5674 in the backH314 with AchishH397. 3Then the commandersH8269 of the PhilistinesH6430 saidH559, “WhatH4100 are theseH428 HebrewsH5680 doing here?” And AchishH397 saidH559 to the commandersH8269 of the PhilistinesH6430, “Is thisH2088 not DavidH1732, the servantH5650 of SaulH7586 the kingH4428 of IsraelH3478, 5whoH834 has beenH1961 with me theseH2088 daysH3117, orH176 rather theseH2088 yearsH8141, and 6I have foundH4672 nothingH3808H3972 atH3972 allH3972 suspicious in him sinceH4480 the dayH3117 he 7desertedH5307 to me to thisH2088 dayH3117?” 4But the commandersH8269 of the PhilistinesH6430 wereH7107 angryH7107 with him, and the commandersH8269 of the PhilistinesH6430 saidH559 to him, “Make the manH376 goH7725 backH7725, so that he will returnH7725 8to his placeH4725 whereH834H8033 you have assignedH6485 him, and do not let him goH3381 downH3381 to battleH4421 with us, 9orH3808 in the battleH4421 he may becomeH1961 an adversaryH7854 to us. For howH4100 could thisH2088 man findH7521 favorH7521 with his lordH113? Would it not be with the headsH7218 of 10theseH1992 menH376? 5Is thisH2088 not DavidH1732, 11of whomH834 they singH6031 in the dancesH4246, sayingH559, ‘SaulH7586 has slainH5221 his thousandsH505, And DavidH1732 his tenH7233 thousandsH7233’?”
6Then AchishH397 calledH7121 DavidH1732 and saidH559 to him, “As the LordH3068 livesH2416, you have indeedH3588 been honestH3477, and 12your 13goingH3318 outH3318 and your comingH935 inH935 with me in the armyH4264 are pleasingH2896 in my sightH5869; 14for I have not foundH4672 evilH7463 in you sinceH3588 the dayH3117 of your comingH935 to me to thisH2088 dayH3117. Nevertheless, you are not pleasingH2896 in the sightH5869 of the governorsH5633. 7NowH6258 then, returnH7725 and goH1980 in peaceH7965, so that you will not doH6213 anything wrongH7451 in the sightH5869 of the governorsH5633 of the PhilistinesH6430.” 8However, DavidH1732 saidH559 to AchishH397, “15But whatH4100 have I doneH6213? And whatH4100 have you foundH4672 in your servantH5650 sinceH4480 the dayH3117 that I cameH1961 beforeH6440 you, to thisH2088 dayH3117, that I cannot goH935 and fightH3898 against the enemiesH340 of my lordH113 the kingH4428?” 9But AchishH397 repliedH6030 to DavidH1732, “I knowH3045 that you are pleasingH2896 in my sightH5869, 16like an angelH4397 of GodH430; neverthelessH389 17the commandersH8269 of the PhilistinesH6430 have saidH559, ‘He must not goH5927 upH5927 with us into the battleH4421.’ 10NowH6258 then, riseH7925 earlyH7925 in the morningH1242 18with the servantsH5650 of your lordH113 whoH834 have comeH935 with you, and as soon as you have risenH7925 earlyH7925 in the morningH1242 and haveH215 lightH215, leaveH1980.” 11So DavidH1732 gotH7925 upH7925 earlyH7925, he and his menH376, to leaveH1980 in the morningH1242 to returnH7725 to the landH776 of the PhilistinesH6430. And the PhilistinesH6430 wentH5927 upH5927 to JezreelH3157.
