Exodus 13

New American Standard Bible 2020

1Then the LordH3068 spokeH1696 to MosesH4872, sayingH559, 2“1SanctifyH6942 to Me everyH3605 firstbornH1060, the firstbornH6363 of everyH3605 wombH7358 among the sonsH1121 of IsraelH3478, among peopleH120 and animalsH929 alike; it belongs to Me.”

3And MosesH4872 saidH559 to the peopleH5971, “2RememberH2142 thisH2088 dayH3117 in whichH834 you departedH3318 from EgyptH4714, from the houseH1004 of 3slaveryH5650; for 4by 5a powerfulH2392 handH3027 the LordH3068 broughtH3318 you outH3318 from thisH2088 place. 6And nothingH3808 withH2557 yeastH2557 shall be eatenH398. 4On this dayH3117 in the 7monthH2320 of AbibH24, you are about to goH3318 outH3318 from here. 5And it shall be whenH3588 the LordH3068 8bringsH935 you to the landH776 of the CanaaniteH3669, the HittiteH2850, the AmoriteH567, the HiviteH2340, and the JebusiteH2983, whichH834 9He sworeH7650 to your fathersH1 to giveH5414 you, a landH776 flowingH2100 with milkH2461 and honeyH1706, 10that you shall 11performH5647 thisH2088 riteH5656 in thisH2088 monthH2320. 6For 12sevenH7651 daysH3117 you shall eatH398 unleavenedH4682 breadH4682, and on the seventhH7637 dayH3117 there shall be a feastH2282 to the LordH3068. 7UnleavenedH4682 breadH4682 shall be eatenH398 throughout the sevenH7651 daysH3117; and 13nothingH3808 withH2557 yeastH2557 shall 14be seenH7200 among you, norH3808 shall any doughH7603 withH7603 yeastH7603 15be seenH7200 among you in allH3605 your bordersH1366. 8And 16you shall tellH5046 your sonH1121 on that dayH3117, sayingH559, ‘It is becauseH5668 of whatH2088 the LordH3068 didH6213 for me when I cameH3318 outH3318 of EgyptH4714.’ 9And 17it shall 18serveH1961 as a signH226 to you on your handH3027, and as a reminderH2146 19on your foreheadH996H5869, that the lawH8451 of the LordH3068 may be in your mouthH6310; for with 20a powerfulH2389 handH3027 the LordH3068 broughtH3318 you outH3318 of EgyptH4714. 10Therefore, you shall 21keepH8104 thisH2088 ordinanceH2708 at its appointedH4150 timeH4150 from 22yearH3117 to yearH3117.

11“Now whenH3588 23the LordH3068 bringsH935 you to the landH776 of the CanaaniteH3669, as 24He sworeH7650 to you and to your fathersH1, and givesH5414 it to you, 1225you shall 26devoteH5674 to the LordH3068 everyH3605 firstbornH6363 of a wombH7358, and everyH3605 firstbornH6363 offspringH7698 of an animalH929 that you ownH1961; the malesH2145 belong to the LordH3068. 13But 27everyH3605 firstbornH6363 of a donkeyH2543 you shall redeemH6299 with a lambH7716, but ifH518 you do not redeemH6299 it, then you shall breakH6202 its neckH6202; and 28everyH3605 29firstbornH1060 among your sonsH1121 you shall redeemH6299. 1430And it shall be whenH3588 your sonH1121 asksH7592 you inH4279 timeH4279 toH4279 comeH4279, sayingH559, ‘WhatH4100 is thisH2088?’ then you shall sayH559 to him, ‘31With 32a powerfulH2392 handH3027 the LordH3068 broughtH3318 us outH3318 of EgyptH4714, from the houseH1004 of 33slaveryH5650. 15And it cameH1961 aboutH1961, whenH3588 PharaohH6547 wasH7185 stubbornH7185 about lettingH7971 us goH7971, that the 34LordH3068 putH2026 toH2026 deathH2026 everyH3605 firstbornH1060 in the landH776 of EgyptH4714, from humanH120 firstbornsH1060 to animalH929 firstbornsH1060. ThereforeH5921H3651, I sacrificeH2076 to the LordH3068 the malesH2145, everyH3605 firstbornH1060 of a wombH7358, but everyH3605 firstbornH1060 of my sonsH1121 I redeemH6299.’ 16So 35it shall 36serveH1961 as a signH226 on your handH3027 and as 37phylacteriesH2903 38on your foreheadH996H5869, for with 39a powerfulH2392 handH3027 the LordH3068 broughtH3318 us outH3318 of EgyptH4714.”

God Leads the People

17Now when PharaohH6547 had letH7971 the peopleH5971 goH7971, GodH430 did not leadH5148 them by the wayH1870 of the landH776 of the PhilistinesH6430, evenH3588 thoughH3588 it was nearH7138; for GodH430 saidH559, “40The peopleH5971 mightH6435 changeH5162 their mindsH5162 when they seeH7200 warH4421, and returnH7725 to EgyptH4714.” 18Therefore GodH430 ledH5437 the peopleH5971 aroundH5437 by wayH1870 of the wildernessH4057 to the 41RedH5488 SeaH3220; and the sonsH1121 of IsraelH3478 wentH5927 upH5927 42in battleH2571 formationH2571 from the landH776 of EgyptH4714. 19And MosesH4872 tookH3947 43the bonesH6106 of JosephH3130 with him, for he had made the sonsH1121 of IsraelH3478 solemnlyH7650 swearH7650, sayingH559, “GodH430 will certainlyH6485 44takeH6485 careH6485 ofH6485 you, and you shall carryH5927 my bonesH6106 from hereH2088 with you.” 20Then they setH5265 outH5265 from 45SuccothH5523 and campedH2583 in EthamH864, on the edgeH7097 of the wildernessH4057. 21And 46the LordH3068 was goingH1980 beforeH6440 them in a pillarH5982 of cloudH6051 by dayH3119 to leadH5148 them on the wayH1870, and in a pillarH5982 of fireH784 by nightH3915 to giveH215 them lightH215, so that they might 47travelH1980 by dayH3119 and by nightH3915. 2248He 49did not takeH4185 awayH4185 the pillarH5982 of cloudH6051 by dayH3119, norH3808 the pillarH5982 of fireH784 by nightH3915, from the presenceH6440 of the peopleH5971.
