2Allכֹּ֖לkolH3605the sonsבְּנֵ֣יbe.NeiH1121of Israelיִשְׂרָאֵ֑לYis.ra.'ElH3478grumbledוַיִּלֹּ֙נוּ֙vai.yi.Lo.nuH3885againstH5921Mosesמֹשֶׁ֣הmo.ShehH4872and Aaronאַהֲרֹ֔ן'a.ha.RonH175;and the wholeכָּל־kol-H3605congregationהָעֵדָ֗הha.'e.DahH5712saidוַֽיֹּאמְר֨וּvai.yo.me.RuH559to them, “Wouldלוּ־lu-H3863that we had diedמַ֙תְנוּ֙mat.nuH4191in the landבְּאֶ֣רֶץbe.'E.retzH776of Egyptמִצְרַ֔יִםmitz.Ra.yimH4714!Orא֛וֹ'oH176wouldלוּ־lu-H3863that we had diedמָֽתְנוּ׃Ma.te.nuH4191in thisהַזֶּ֖הha.ZehH2088wildernessבַּמִּדְבָּ֥רba.mid.BarH4057!

3Whyוְלָמָ֣הve.la.MahH4100is the Lordיְ֠הוָהYah.wehH3068bringingמֵבִ֨יאme.Vi'H935us into thisH2088landהָאָ֤רֶץha.'A.retzH776,to fallלִנְפֹּ֣לlin.PolH5307by the swordבַּחֶ֔רֶבba.Che.revH2719?Our wivesנָשֵׁ֥ינוּna.Shei.nuH802and our littleוְטַפֵּ֖נוּve.ta.Pe.nuH2945onesH2945will becomeיִהְי֣וּyih.YuH1961plunderלָבַ֑זla.VazH957;would it not be betterט֦וֹבTovH2896for us to returnשׁ֥וּבshuvH7725to Egyptמִצְרָֽיְמָה׃mitz.Ra.ye.mahH4714?”

4So they saidוַיֹּאמְר֖וּvai.yo.me.RuH559to oneאִ֣ישׁ'ishH376anotherאָחִ֑יו'a.ChivH251, “Let us appointנִתְּנָ֥הni.te.NahH5414a leaderרֹ֖אשׁroshH7218and returnוְנָשׁ֥וּבָהve.na.Shu.vahH7725to Egyptמִצְרָֽיְמָה׃mitz.Ra.ye.mahH4714.”

5Then Mosesמֹשֶׁ֛הmo.ShehH4872and Aaronוְאַהֲרֹ֖ןve.'a.ha.RonH175fellוַיִּפֹּ֥לvai.yi.PolH5307on their facesפְּנֵיהֶ֑םpe.nei.HemH6440in the presenceלִפְנֵ֕יlif.NeiH6440of allכָּל־kol-H3605the assemblyקְהַ֥לke.HalH6951of the congregationעֲדַ֖ת'a.DatH5712of the sonsבְּנֵ֥יbe.NeiH1121of Israelיִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃Yis.ra.'ElH3478.

6Joshuaוִיהוֹשֻׁ֣עַvi.ho.Shu.a'H3091the sonבִּן־bin-H1121of Nunנ֗וּןNunH5126and Calebוְכָלֵב֙ve.kha.LevH3612the sonבֶּן־ben-H1121of Jephunnehיְפֻנֶּ֔הye.fu.NehH3312,of those who had spiedהַתָּרִ֖יםha.ta.RimH8446out the landהָאָ֑רֶץha.'A.retzH776,toreקָרְע֖וּka.re.'UH7167their clothesבִּגְדֵיהֶֽם׃big.dei.HemH899;

7and they spokeוַיֹּ֣אמְר֔וּvai.Yo.me.RuH559to allכָּל־kol-H3605the congregationעֲדַ֥ת'a.DatH5712of the sonsבְּנֵֽי־be.nei-H1121of Israelיִשְׂרָאֵ֖לYis.ra.'ElH3478,sayingלֵאמֹ֑רle.MorH559, “The landהָאָ֗רֶץha.'A.retzH776whichאֲשֶׁ֨ר'a.SherH834we passedH5674throughH5674to spyלָת֣וּרla.TurH8446out is an exceedinglyH3966goodטוֹבָ֥הto.VahH2896landהָאָ֖רֶץha.'A.retzH776.

8Ifאִם־'im-H518the Lordיְהוָ֔הYah.wehH3068is pleasedחָפֵ֥ץcha.FetzH2654with us, then He will bringוְהֵבִ֤יאve.he.Vi'H935us into thisH2088landהָאָ֣רֶץha.'A.retzH776and giveוּנְתָנָ֖הּu.ne.ta.NahH5414it to us--a landאֶ֕רֶץ'E.retzH776whichאֲשֶׁר־'a.Sher-H834flowsזָבַ֥תza.VatH2100with milkחָלָ֖בcha.LavH2461and honeyוּדְבָֽשׁ׃u.de.VashH1706.

9Onlyאַ֣ךְ'akhH389do not rebelתִּמְרֹדוּ֒tim.ro.DuH4775against the Lordבַּֽיהוָה֮ba.Yah.wehH3068; and do notfearתִּֽירְאוּ֙ti.re.'UH3372the peopleעַ֣ם'amH5971of the landהָאָ֔רֶץha.'A.retzH776, for they will be ourpreyלַחְמֵ֖נוּlach.Me.nuH3899. Theirprotectionצִלָּ֧םtzi.LamH6738has been removedסָ֣רsarH5493from them, and the Lordוַֽיהוָ֥הva.Yah.wehH3068is with us; do not fearתִּירָאֻֽם׃ti.ra.'UmH3372them.”

10But allכָּל־kol-H3605the congregationהָ֣עֵדָ֔הha.'e.DahH5712saidוַיֹּֽאמְרוּ֙vai.yo.me.RuH559to stoneלִרְגּ֥וֹםlir.GomH7275them with stonesבָּאֲבָנִ֑יםba.'a.va.NimH68. Thenthe gloryוּכְב֣וֹדu.khe.VodH3519of the Lordיְהוָ֗הYah.wehH3068appearedנִרְאָה֙nir.'AhH7200in the tentבְּאֹ֣הֶלbe.'O.helH168of meetingמוֹעֵ֔דmo.'EdH4150to allכָּל־kol-H3605the sonsבְּנֵ֖יbe.NeiH1121of Israelיִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ פYis.ra.'ElH3478.

Moses Pleads for the People

11The Lordיְהוָה֙Yah.wehH3068saidוַיֹּ֤אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559to Mosesמֹשֶׁ֔הmo.ShehH4872, “Howאָ֥נָה'A.nahH575longעַד־'ad-H5704will thisהַזֶּ֑הha.ZehH2088peopleהָעָ֣םha.'AmH5971spurnיְנַאֲצֻ֖נִיye.na.'a.Tzu.niH5006Me? And howאָ֙נָה֙'a.nahH575longוְעַד־ve.'ad-H5704willthey not believeיַאֲמִ֣ינוּya.'a.Mi.nuH539in Me, despite allבְּכֹל֙be.KholH3605the signsהָֽאֹת֔וֹתha.'o.TotH226whichאֲשֶׁ֥ר'a.SherH834I have performedעָשִׂ֖יתִי'a.Si.tiH6213in their midstבְּקִרְבּֽוֹ׃be.kir.BoH7130?

12I will smiteאַכֶּ֥נּוּ'ak.Ke.nuH5221them withpestilenceבַדֶּ֖בֶרva.De.verH1698and dispossessוְאוֹרִשֶׁ֑נּוּve.'o.ri.She.nuH3423them, and Iwill makeוְאֶֽעֱשֶׂה֙ve.'e.'e.SehH6213you into a nationלְגוֹי־le.goy-H1471greaterגָּד֥וֹלga.DolH1419and mightierוְעָצ֖וּםve.'a.TzumH6099thanמִמֶּֽנּוּ׃mi.Me.nuH4480they.”

13But Mosesמֹשֶׁ֖הmo.ShehH4872saidוַיֹּ֥אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559to the Lordיְהוָ֑הYah.wehH3068, “Then the EgyptiansH4714will hearוְשָׁמְע֣וּve.sha.me.'UH8085of it, for by Your strengthבְכֹחֲךָ֛ve.kho.cha.KhaH3581You broughtהֶעֱלִ֧יתָhe.'e.Li.taH5927up thisהַזֶּ֖הha.ZehH2088peopleהָעָ֥םha.'AmH5971from their midstמִקִּרְבּֽוֹ׃mi.kir.BoH7130,

14and they will tellוְאָמְר֗וּve.'a.me.RuH559itto the inhabitantsיוֹשֵׁב֮yo.ShevH3427of thisH2088landהָאָ֣רֶץha.'A.retzH776.They have heardשָֽׁמְעוּ֙sha.me.'UH8085that You, O Lordיְהוָ֔הYah.wehH3068,are in the midstבְּקֶ֖רֶבbe.Ke.revH7130of thisH2088peopleהָעָ֣םha.'AmH5971, forYou, O Lordיְהוָ֗הYah.wehH3068,are seenנִרְאָ֣ה׀nir.'AhH7200eyeעַ֨יִן'A.yinH5869to eyeבְּעַ֜יִןbe.'A.yinH5869,while Your cloudוַעֲנָֽנְךָ֙va.'a.na.ne.KhaH6051standsעֹמֵ֣ד'o.MedH5975overעֲלֵהֶ֔ם'a.le.HemH5921them; and You goהֹלֵ֤ךְho.LekhH1980beforeלִפְנֵיהֶם֙lif.nei.HemH6440them in a pillarוּבְעַמֻּ֣דu.ve.'a.MudH5982of cloudעָנָ֗ן'a.NanH6051by dayיוֹמָ֔םyo.MamH3119and in a pillarוּבְעַמּ֥וּדu.ve.'a.MudH5982of fireאֵ֖שׁ'eshH784by nightלָֽיְלָה׃La.ye.lahH3915.

15Now if You slayH5221thisהַזֶּ֖הha.ZehH2088peopleהָעָ֥םha.'AmH5971as oneאֶחָ֑ד'e.ChadH259manכְּאִ֣ישׁke.'IshH376,then the nationsהַגּוֹיִ֔םha.go.YimH1471whoאֲשֶׁר־'a.Sher-H834have heardשָׁמְע֥וּsha.me.'UH8085of Your fameשִׁמְעֲךָ֖shim.'a.KhaH8088willsayH559,

16‘BecauseH4480the Lordיְהוָ֗הYah.wehH3068couldיְכֹ֣לֶתye.Kho.letH3201not bringלְהָבִיא֙le.ha.Vi'H935thisהַזֶּ֔הha.ZehH2088peopleהָעָ֣םha.'AmH5971into the landהָאָ֖רֶץha.'A.retzH776whichאֲשֶׁר־'a.Sher-H834He promisedH7650them by oathH7650,therefore He slaughteredוַיִּשְׁחָטֵ֖םvai.yish.cha.TemH7819them in the wildernessבַּמִּדְבָּֽר׃ba.mid.BarH4057.’

17But nowוְעַתָּ֕הve.'a.TahH6258,I prayנָ֖אna'H4994,let the powerכֹּ֣חַKo.achH3581of the Lordאֲדֹנָ֑י'a.do.NaiH136be greatיִגְדַּל־yig.dal-H1431,justH3512as You havedeclaredדִּבַּ֖רְתָּ לֵאמֹֽר׃di.Bar.ta le.MorH1696 H559,

18‘The Lordיְהוָ֗הYah.wehH3068is slowאֶ֤רֶךְ'E.rekhH750to angerאַפַּ֙יִם֙'a.Pa.yimH639and abundantוְרַב־ve.rav-H7227in lovingkindnessחֶ֔סֶדChe.sedH2617,forgivingנֹשֵׂ֥אno.Se'H5375iniquityעָוֹ֖ן'a.VonH5771and transgressionוָפָ֑שַׁעva.Fa.sha'H6588; butHe will by noלֹ֣אlo'H3808meansוְנַקֵּה֙ve.na.KehH5352clearיְנַקֶּ֔הye.na.KehH5352the guilty,visitingפֹּקֵ֞דpo.KedH6485the iniquityעֲוֹ֤ן'a.VonH5771of the fathersאָבוֹת֙'a.VotH1on the childrenבָּנִ֔יםba.NimH1121to the thirdשִׁלֵּשִׁ֖יםshi.le.ShimH8029and the fourthרִבֵּעִֽים׃ri.be.'ImH7256generations.’

19Pardonסְלַֽח־se.lach-H5545,I prayנָ֗אNa'H4994,the iniquityלַעֲוֹ֛ןla.'a.VonH5771of thisהַזֶּ֖הha.ZehH2088peopleהָעָ֥םha.'AmH5971according to the greatnessכְּגֹ֣דֶלke.Go.delH1433of Your lovingkindnessחַסְדֶּ֑ךָchas.De.khaH2617,justH3512as You also have forgivenנָשָׂ֙אתָה֙na.Sa.tahH5375thisהַזֶּ֔הha.ZehH2088peopleלָעָ֣םla.'AmH5971,from Egyptמִמִּצְרַ֖יִםmi.mitz.Ra.yimH4714even untilוְעַד־ve.'ad-H5704nowהֵֽנָּה׃He.nahH2008.”

The Lord Pardons and Rebukes

20So the Lordיְהוָ֔הYah.wehH3068saidוַיֹּ֣אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559, “I have pardonedסָלַ֖חְתִּיsa.Lach.tiH5545themaccording to your wordכִּדְבָרֶֽךָ׃kid.va.Re.khaH1697;

21but indeedוְאוּלָ֖םve.'u.LamH199,as I liveחַי־chai-H2416,allכָּל־kol-H3605the earthהָאָֽרֶץ׃ha.'A.retzH776will be filledוְיִמָּלֵ֥אve.yi.ma.Le'H4390with the gloryכְבוֹד־khe.Vod-H3519of the Lordיְהוָ֖הYah.wehH3068.

22Surelyכִּ֣יkiH3588allכָל־khol-H3605the menH376who have seenהָרֹאִ֤יםha.ro.'ImH7200My gloryכְּבֹדִי֙ke.vo.DiH3519and My signsאֹ֣תֹתַ֔י'o.to.TaiH226whichאֲשֶׁר־'a.Sher-H834I performedעָשִׂ֥יתִי'a.Si.tiH6213in Egyptבְמִצְרַ֖יִםve.mitz.Ra.yimH4714and in the wildernessוּבַמִּדְבָּ֑רu.va.mid.BarH4057, yethave putוַיְנַסּ֣וּvay.na.SuH5254Me to the testH5254theseזֶ֚הzehH2088tenעֶ֣שֶׂר'E.serH6235timesפְּעָמִ֔יםpe.'a.MimH6471and have not listenedשָׁמְע֖וּsha.me.'UH8085to My voiceבְּקוֹלִֽי׃be.ko.LiH6963,

23shall by noH518meansH518seeיִרְאוּ֙yir.'UH7200the landהָאָ֔רֶץha.'A.retzH776whichאֲשֶׁ֥ר'a.SherH834I sworeנִשְׁבַּ֖עְתִּיnish.Ba'.tiH7650to their fathersלַאֲבֹתָ֑םla.'a.vo.TamH1,norלֹ֥אlo'H3808shall anyוְכָל־ve.kholH3605of those who spurnedמְנַאֲצַ֖יme.na.'a.TzaiH5006Me seeיִרְאֽוּהָ׃yir.'U.haH7200it.

24But My servantוְעַבְדִּ֣יve.'av.DiH5650Calebכָלֵ֗בkha.LevH3612,becauseעֵ֣קֶב'E.kevH6118he hasעִמּ֔וֹi.MoH5973hadהָֽיְתָ֞הha.ye.TahH1961a differentאַחֶ֙רֶת֙'a.Che.retH312spiritר֤וּחַRu.achH7307and has followedאַחֲרָ֑י'a.cha.RaiH310Me fullyוַיְמַלֵּ֖אvay.ma.Le'H4390,I will bringוַהֲבִֽיאֹתִ֗יוva.ha.vi.'o.TivH935into the landהָאָ֙רֶץ֙ha.'A.retzH776whichאֲשֶׁר־'a.Sher-H834he enteredבָּ֣אba'H935, and hisdescendantsוְזַרְע֖וֹve.zar.'OH2233shall takeיוֹרִשֶֽׁנָּה׃yo.ri.She.nahH3423possessionH3423of it.

25Now the Amalekitesוְהָֽעֲמָלֵקִ֥יve.ha.'a.mal.KiH6003and the Canaanitesוְהַֽכְּנַעֲנִ֖יve.ha.ke.na.'a.NiH3669liveיוֹשֵׁ֣בyo.ShevH3427in the valleysבָּעֵ֑מֶקba.'E.mekH6010;turnפְּנ֨וּpe.NuH6437tomorrowמָחָ֗רma.CharH4279and setוּסְע֥וּu.se.'UH5265out to the wildernessהַמִּדְבָּ֖רha.mid.BarH4057by the wayדֶּ֥רֶךְDe.rekhH1870of theRedסֽוּף׃ פSufH5488 H3220Seaיַם־yam-H3220.”

26The Lordיְהוָ֔הYah.wehH3068spokeוַיְדַבֵּ֣רvay.da.BerH1696to Mosesמֹשֶׁ֥הmo.ShehH4872and Aaronאַהֲרֹ֖ן'a.ha.RonH175,sayingלֵאמֹֽר׃le.MorH559,

27“HowH4970longעַד־'ad-H5704 H4970shall I bearwith thisH2088evilהָֽרָעָה֙ha.ra.'AhH7451congregationלָעֵדָ֤הla.'e.DahH5712whoאֲשֶׁ֛ר'a.SherH834aregrumblingמַלִּינִ֖יםma.li.NimH3885againstעָלָ֑י'a.LaiH5921Me? I have heardשָׁמָֽעְתִּי׃sha.Ma.'e.tiH8085the complaintsתְּלֻנּ֞וֹתte.lu.NotH8519of the sonsבְּנֵ֣יbe.NeiH1121of Israelיִשְׂרָאֵ֗לYis.ra.'ElH3478,whichאֲשֶׁ֨ר'a.SherH834they aremakingמַלִּינִ֛יםma.li.NimH3885againstעָלַ֖י'a.LaiH5921Me.

28Sayאֱמֹ֣ר'e.MorH559to them, ‘As I liveחַי־chai-H2416,’saysנְאֻם־ne.'um-H5002the Lordיְהוָ֔הYah.wehH3068, ‘justH3512asyou have spokenדִּבַּרְתֶּ֖םdi.bar.TemH1696in My hearingבְּאָזְנָ֑יbe.'a.ze.NaiH241,soכֵּ֖ןkenH3651I will surely doאֶֽעֱשֶׂ֥ה'e.'e.SehH6213to you;

29your corpsesפִגְרֵיכֶ֜םfig.rei.KhemH6297will fallיִפְּל֨וּyi.pe.LuH5307in thisהַ֠זֶּהHa.zehH2088wildernessבַּמִּדְבָּ֣רba.mid.BarH4057,even allוְכָל־ve.kholH3605yournumberedפְּקֻדֵיכֶם֙pe.ku.dei.KhemH6485men, according to your completeלְכָל־le.kholH3605numberמִסְפַּרְכֶ֔םmis.par.KhemH4557from twentyעֶשְׂרִ֥ים'es.RimH6242yearsשָׁנָ֖הsha.NahH8141oldמִבֶּ֛ןmi.BenH1121and upwardוָמָ֑עְלָהva.Ma.'e.lahH4605,whoאֲשֶׁ֥ר'a.SherH834have grumbledהֲלִֽינֹתֶ֖םha.li.no.TemH3885againstעָלָֽי׃'a.LaiH5921Me.

30Surelyאִם־'im-H518you shall not comeתָּבֹ֣אוּta.Vo.'uH935into the landהָאָ֔רֶץha.'A.retzH776in whichאֲשֶׁ֤ר'a.SherH834Isworeנָשָׂ֙אתִי֙ יָדִ֔יna.Sa.ti ya.DiH5375 H3027to settleלְשַׁכֵּ֥ןle.sha.KenH7931you,exceptכִּ֚י אִם־ki 'im-H3588 H518Calebכָּלֵ֣בka.LevH3612the sonבֶּן־ben-H1121of Jephunnehיְפֻנֶּ֔הye.fu.NehH3312and Joshuaוִיהוֹשֻׁ֖עַvi.ho.Shu.a'H3091the sonבִּן־bin-H1121of Nunנֽוּן׃NunH5126.

31Your childrenוְטַ֨פְּכֶ֔םve.Ta.pe.KhemH2945,however, whomאֲשֶׁ֥ר'a.SherH834you saidאֲמַרְתֶּ֖ם'a.mar.TemH559would becomeיִהְיֶ֑הyih.YehH1961a preyלָבַ֣זla.VazH957--I will bringוְהֵבֵיאתִ֣יve.he.vei.TiH935them in, and they will knowוְיָֽדְעוּ֙ve.ya.de.'UH3045the landהָאָ֔רֶץha.'A.retzH776whichאֲשֶׁ֥ר'a.SherH834you have rejectedמְאַסְתֶּ֖םme.'as.TemH3988.

32But as for you, your corpsesוּפִגְרֵיכֶ֖םu.fig.rei.KhemH6297will fallיִפְּל֖וּyi.pe.LuH5307in thisהַזֶּֽה׃ha.ZehH2088wildernessבַּמִּדְבָּ֥רba.mid.BarH4057.

33Your sonsוּ֠בְנֵיכֶםU.ve.nei.khemH1121shall be shepherdsרֹעִ֤יםro.'ImH7462forfortyאַרְבָּעִ֣ים'ar.ba.'ImH705yearsשָׁנָ֔הsha.NahH8141in the wildernessבַּמִּדְבָּר֙ba.mid.BarH4057, and they willsufferוְנָשְׂא֖וּve.na.se.'UH5375for yourunfaithfulnessזְנוּתֵיכֶ֑םze.nu.tei.KhemH2184,untilעַד־'ad-H5704your corpsesפִּגְרֵיכֶ֖םpig.rei.KhemH6297lieתֹּ֥םtomH8552in the wildernessבַּמִּדְבָּֽר׃ba.mid.BarH4057.

35I, the Lordיְהוָה֮Yah.wehH3068,have spokenדִּבַּרְתִּי֒di.bar.TiH1696,surelyאִם־ לֹ֣א׀'im- lo'H518 H3808thisH2088I will doאֶֽעֱשֶׂ֗ה'e.'e.SehH6213to allלְכָל־le.kholH3605thisH2088evilהָֽרָעָה֙ha.ra.'AhH7451congregationהָעֵדָ֤הha.'e.DahH5712who are gatheredהַנּוֹעָדִ֖יםha.no.'a.DimH3259together againstעָלָ֑י'a.LaiH5921Me. In thisH2088wildernessבַּמִּדְבָּ֥רba.mid.BarH4057they shall be destroyedיִתַּ֖מּוּyi.Ta.muH8552,and thereוְשָׁ֥םve.ShamH8033they will dieיָמֻֽתוּ׃ya.Mu.tuH4191.’”
