1Now the peopleהָעָם֙ha.'AmH5971becameוַיְהִ֤יvay.HiH1961likethose who complainכְּמִתְאֹ֣נְנִ֔יםke.mit.'O.ne.NimH596of adversityרַ֖עra'H7451in the hearingבְּאָזְנֵ֣יbe.'a.ze.NeiH241of the Lordיְהוָ֑הYah.wehH3068;and when the Lordיְהוָה֙Yah.wehH3068heardוַיִּשְׁמַ֤עvai.yish.Ma'H8085it,His angerאַפּ֔וֹ'a.PoH639was kindledוַיִּ֣חַרvai.Yi.charH2734,and the fireאֵ֣שׁ'eshH784of the Lordיְהוָ֔הYah.wehH3068burnedוַתִּבְעַר־va.tiv.'ar-H1197among them and consumedוַתֹּ֖אכַלva.To.khalH398someof the outskirtsבִּקְצֵ֥הbik.TzehH7097of the campהַֽמַּחֲנֶֽה׃Ha.ma.cha.NehH4264.

2The peopleהָעָ֖םha.'AmH5971therefore criedוַיִּצְעַ֥קvai.yitz.'AkH6817out to Mosesמֹשֶׁ֑הmo.ShehH4872,and Mosesמֹשֶׁה֙mo.ShehH4872prayedוַיִּתְפַּלֵּ֤לvai.yit.pa.LelH6419to the Lordיְהוָ֔הYah.wehH3068and the fireהָאֵֽשׁ׃ha.'EshH784diedוַתִּשְׁקַ֖עva.tish.Ka'H8257out.

3So the nameשֵֽׁם־shem-H8034of that placeהַמָּק֥וֹםha.ma.KomH4725was calledוַיִּקְרָ֛אvai.yik.Ra'H7121Taberahתַּבְעֵרָ֑הtav.'e.RahH8404,becauseכִּֽי־ki-H3588the fireאֵ֥שׁ'eshH784of the Lordיְהוָֽה׃Yah.wehH3068burnedבָעֲרָ֥הva.'a.RahH1197among them.

4Therabbleוְהָֽאסַפְסֻף֙ve.ha.saf.SufH628whoאֲשֶׁ֣ר'a.SherH834were amongבְּקִרְבּ֔וֹbe.kir.BoH7130themhadH183greedyH8378desiresH183 H8378;and alsoגַּ֚םgamH1571the sonsבְּנֵ֣יbe.NeiH1121of Israelיִשְׂרָאֵ֔לYis.ra.'ElH3478weptוַיִּבְכּ֗וּvai.yiv.KuH1058againוַיָּשֻׁ֣בוּvai.ya.Shu.vuH7725and saidוַיֹּ֣אמְר֔וּvai.Yo.me.RuH559, “Whoמִ֥יmiH4310will give usmeatבָּשָֽׂר׃ba.SarH1320to eatיַאֲכִלֵ֖נוּya.'a.khi.Le.nuH398?

5We rememberזָכַ֙רְנוּ֙za.Khar.nuH2142the fishהַדָּגָ֔הha.da.GahH1710whichאֲשֶׁר־'a.Sher-H834we used to eatנֹאכַ֥לno.KhalH398freeחִנָּ֑םchi.NamH2600in Egyptבְּמִצְרַ֖יִםbe.mitz.Ra.yimH4714,the cucumbersהַקִּשֻּׁאִ֗יםha.ki.shu.'ImH7180and the melonsהָֽאֲבַטִּחִ֔יםha.'a.va.ti.ChimH20and the leeksהֶחָצִ֥ירhe.cha.TzirH2682and the onionsהַבְּצָלִ֖יםha.be.tza.LimH1211and the garlicהַשּׁוּמִֽים׃ha.shu.MimH7762,

6but nowוְעַתָּ֛הve.'a.TahH6258ourappetiteנַפְשֵׁ֥נוּnaf.She.nuH5315is goneיְבֵשָׁ֖הye.ve.ShahH3002.ThereH369is nothingH369at allכֹּ֑לKolH3605to lookעֵינֵֽינוּ׃'ei.Nei.nuH5869at exceptבִּלְתִּ֖יbil.TiH1115this mannaהַמָּ֥ןha.ManH4478.”

7Now the mannaוְהַמָּ֕ןve.ha.ManH4478was like corianderגַּ֖דgadH1407seedכִּזְרַע־kiz.ra'-H2233,and its appearanceH5869like that ofbdelliumהַבְּדֹֽלַח׃ha.be.Do.lachH916.

9When the dewהַטַּ֛לha.TalH2919fellוּבְרֶ֧דֶתu.ve.Re.detH3381on the campהַֽמַּחֲנֶ֖הha.ma.cha.NehH4264at nightלָ֑יְלָהLa.ye.lahH3915,the mannaהַמָּ֖ןha.ManH4478would fallיֵרֵ֥דye.RedH3381with it.

The Complaint of Moses

10Now Mosesמֹשֶׁ֜הmo.ShehH4872heardוַיִּשְׁמַ֨עvai.yish.Ma'H8085the peopleהָעָ֗םha.'AmH5971weepingבֹּכֶה֙bo.KhehH1058throughout their familiesלְמִשְׁפְּחֹתָ֔יוle.mish.pe.cho.TavH4940,eachH376manH376at the doorwayלְפֶ֣תַחle.Fe.tachH6607of his tentאָהֳל֑וֹ'o.ho.LoH168;and the angerאַ֤ף'afH639of the Lordיְהוָה֙Yah.wehH3068was kindledוַיִּֽחַר־vai.yi.char-H2734greatlyמְאֹ֔דme.'OdH3966, andMosesמֹשֶׁ֖הmo.ShehH4872was displeasedוּבְעֵינֵ֥י רָֽע׃u.ve.'ei.Nei Ra'H7489 H5869.

11So Mosesמֹשֶׁ֜הmo.ShehH4872saidוַיֹּ֨אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559to the Lordיְהוָ֗הYah.wehH3068, “Whyלָמָ֤הla.MahH4100have Youbeen so hardהֲרֵעֹ֙תָ֙ha.re.'O.taH7489on Your servantלְעַבְדֶּ֔ךָle.'av.De.khaH5650?And whyוְלָ֛מָּהve.La.mahH4100have I not foundמָצָ֥תִיma.Tza.tiH4672favorחֵ֖ןchenH2580in Your sightבְּעֵינֶ֑יךָbe.'ei.Nei.khaH5869,that You have laidלָשׂ֗וּםla.SumH7760the burdenמַשָּׂ֛אma.Sa'H4853of allכָּל־kol-H3605thisהַזֶּ֖הha.ZehH2088peopleהָעָ֥םha.'AmH5971on me?

14I aloneלְבַדִּ֔יle.va.DiH905am not ableאוּכַ֤ל'u.KhalH3201to carryלָשֵׂ֖אתla.SetH5375allכָּל־kol-H3605thisהַזֶּ֑הha.ZehH2088peopleהָעָ֣םha.'AmH5971,becauseכִּ֥יkiH3588it is tooמִמֶּֽנִּי׃mi.Me.niH4480burdensomeכָבֵ֖דkha.VedH3515for me.

15So ifוְאִם־ve.'im-H518You are going to dealעֹ֣שֶׂה'O.sehH6213thusכָּ֣כָה׀Ka.khahH3602with me, pleaseנָא֙na'H4994killהָרְגֵ֤נִיha.re.Ge.niH2026me at onceהָרֹ֔גha.RogH2026,ifאִם־'im-H518I have foundמָצָ֥אתִיma.Tza.tiH4672favorחֵ֖ןchenH2580in Your sightבְּעֵינֶ֑יךָbe.'ei.Nei.khaH5869,and do not let me seeאֶרְאֶ֖ה'er.'EhH7200my wretchednessH7463.”

Seventy Elders to Assist

16The Lordיְהוָ֜הYah.wehH3068therefore saidוַיֹּ֨אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559to Mosesמֹשֶׁ֗הmo.ShehH4872, “Gatherאֶסְפָה־'es.fah-H622for Meseventyשִׁבְעִ֣יםshiv.'ImH7657menאִישׁ֮'ishH376from the eldersמִזִּקְנֵ֣יmi.zik.NeiH2205of Israelיִשְׂרָאֵל֒Yis.ra.'ElH3478,whomאֲשֶׁ֣ר'a.SherH834you knowיָדַ֔עְתָּya.Da'.taH3045to be the eldersזִקְנֵ֥יzik.NeiH2205of the peopleהָעָ֖םha.'AmH5971and their officersוְשֹׁטְרָ֑יוve.sho.te.RavH7860and bringוְלָקַחְתָּ֤ve.la.kach.TaH3947them to the tentאֹ֣הֶל'O.helH168of meetingמוֹעֵ֔דmo.'EdH4150,and let them takeH3320their standH3320thereשָׁ֖םshamH8033with you.

17Then I will comeוְיָרַדְתִּ֗יve.ya.rad.TiH3381downH3381and speakוְדִבַּרְתִּ֣יve.di.bar.TiH1696with you thereשָׁם֒shamH8033,and I will takeוְאָצַלְתִּ֗יve.'a.tzal.TiH680ofthe Spiritהָר֛וּחַha.Ru.achH7307whoאֲשֶׁ֥ר'a.SherH834is upon you, and will putוְשַׂמְתִּ֣יve.sam.TiH7760Himupon them; and they shall bearוְנָשְׂא֤וּve.na.se.'UH5375the burdenבְּמַשָּׂ֣אbe.ma.Sa'H4853of the peopleהָעָ֔םha.'AmH5971with you, so that you will not bearתִשָּׂ֥אti.Sa'H5375itall aloneלְבַדֶּֽךָ׃le.va.De.khaH905.

21But Mosesמֹשֶׁה֒mo.ShehH4872saidוַיֹּאמֶר֮vai.yo.MerH559, “The peopleהָעָ֕םha.'AmH5971,amongבְּקִרְבּ֑וֹbe.kir.BoH7130whomאֲשֶׁ֥ר'a.SherH834I am, are 600,000שֵׁשׁ־ מֵא֥וֹת אֶ֙לֶף֙shesh- me.'ot 'e.lefH8337 H3967 H505on footרַגְלִ֔יrag.LiH7273;yet You have saidאָמַ֗רְתָּ'a.Mar.taH559, ‘I will giveאֶתֵּ֣ן'e.TenH5414them meatבָּשָׂר֙ba.SarH1320,so that they may eatוְאָכְל֖וּve.'a.khe.LuH398for a wholeיָמִֽים׃ya.MimH3117monthחֹ֥דֶשׁCho.deshH2320.’

22Should flocksהֲצֹ֧אןha.TzonH6629and herdsוּבָקָ֛רu.va.KarH1241be slaughteredיִשָּׁחֵ֥טyi.sha.ChetH7819for them, to be sufficientוּמָצָ֣אu.ma.Tza'H4672for them? Orאִ֣ם'imH518should allכָּל־kol-H3605the fishדְּגֵ֥יde.GeiH1709of the seaהַיָּ֛םhai.YamH3220be gatheredיֵאָסֵ֥ףye.'a.SefH622together for them, to be sufficientוּמָצָ֥אu.ma.Tza'H4672for them?”

23The Lordיְהוָה֙Yah.wehH3068saidוַיֹּ֤אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559to Mosesמֹשֶׁ֔הmo.ShehH4872, “Isthe Lord’sיְהוָ֖הYah.wehH3068powerהֲיַ֥דha.YadH3027limitedתִּקְצָ֑רtik.TzarH7114?Nowעַתָּ֥ה'a.TahH6258you shall seeתִרְאֶ֛הtir.'EhH7200whetherMy wordדְבָרִ֖יde.va.RiH1697willcomeH7136trueH7136for you orאִם־'im-H518not.”

24So Mosesמֹשֶׁ֗הmo.ShehH4872wentוַיֵּצֵ֣אvai.ye.Tze'H3318out andtoldוַיְדַבֵּר֙vay.da.BerH1696the peopleהָעָ֔םha.'AmH5971the wordsדִּבְרֵ֣יdiv.ReiH1697of the Lordיְהוָ֑הYah.wehH3068.Also, he gatheredוַיֶּאֱסֹ֞ףvai.ye.'e.SofH622seventyשִׁבְעִ֥יםshiv.'ImH7657menאִישׁ֙'ishH376of the eldersמִזִּקְנֵ֣יmi.zik.NeiH2205of the peopleהָעָ֔םha.'AmH5971,and stationedוַֽיַּעֲמֵ֥דvai.ya.'a.MedH5975them aroundסְבִיבֹ֥תse.vi.VotH5439the tentהָאֹֽהֶל׃ha.'O.helH168.

25Then the Lordיְהוָ֥ה׀Yah.wehH3068cameH3381downוַיֵּ֨רֶדvai.Ye.redH3381in the cloudבֶּעָנָן֮be.'a.NanH6051and spokeוַיְדַבֵּ֣רvay.da.BerH1696to him; and He tookוַיָּ֗אצֶלvai.Ya.tzelH680of the Spiritהָר֙וּחַ֙ha.Ru.achH7307whoאֲשֶׁ֣ר'a.SherH834was upon him and placedוַיִּתֵּ֕ןvai.yi.TenH5414Himupon the seventyשִׁבְעִ֥יםshiv.'ImH7657eldersהַזְּקֵנִ֑יםha.ze.ke.NimH2205.And when the Spiritהָר֔וּחַha.Ru.achH7307restedכְּנ֤וֹחַke.No.achH5117upon them, they prophesiedוַיִּֽתְנַבְּא֖וּvai.yit.na.be.'UH5012.But they did not doH3254itagainH3254.

26But twoשְׁנֵֽי־she.nei-H8147menH376had remainedוַיִּשָּׁאֲר֣וּvai.yi.sha.'a.RuH7604in the campבַּֽמַּחֲנֶ֡הba.ma.cha.NehH4264;the nameשֵׁ֣םshemH8034of oneהָאֶחָ֣ד׀ha.'e.ChadH259was Eldadאֶלְדָּ֡ד'el.DadH419and the nameוְשֵׁם֩ve.ShemH8034of theotherהַשֵּׁנִ֨יha.she.NiH8145Medadמֵידָ֜דmei.DadH4312. Andthe Spiritהָר֗וּחַha.Ru.achH7307restedוַתָּ֧נַחva.Ta.nachH5117upon them (now they were among those who had been registeredבַּכְּתֻבִ֔יםba.ke.tu.VimH3789,but had not goneיָצְא֖וּya.tze.'UH3318out to the tentהָאֹ֑הֱלָהha.'O.he.lahH168),and they prophesiedוַיִּֽתְנַבְּא֖וּvai.yit.na.be.'UH5012in the campבַּֽמַּחֲנֶֽה׃Ba.ma.cha.NehH4264.

27So a youngהַנַּ֔עַרha.Na.'arH5288manH5288ranוַיָּ֣רָץvai.Ya.rotzH7323and toldוַיַּגֵּ֥דvai.ya.GedH5046Mosesלְמֹשֶׁ֖הle.mo.ShehH4872and saidוַיֹּאמַ֑רvai.yo.MarH559, “Eldadאֶלְדָּ֣ד'el.DadH419and Medadוּמֵידָ֔דu.mei.DadH4312are prophesyingמִֽתְנַבְּאִ֖יםmit.na.be.'ImH5012in the campבַּֽמַּחֲנֶֽה׃Ba.ma.cha.NehH4264.”

28ThenJoshuaיְהוֹשֻׁ֣עַye.ho.Shu.a'H3091the sonבִּן־bin-H1121of Nunנ֗וּןNunH5126,the attendantמְשָׁרֵ֥תme.sha.RetH8334of Mosesמֹשֶׁ֛הmo.ShehH4872from his youthמִבְּחֻרָ֖יוmi.be.chu.RavH979,saidוַיֹּאמַ֑רvai.yo.MarH559, “Mosesמֹשֶׁ֖הmo.ShehH4872,my lordאֲדֹנִ֥י'a.do.NiH113,restrainכְּלָאֵֽם׃ke.la.'EmH3607them.”

29But Mosesמֹשֶׁ֔הmo.ShehH4872saidוַיֹּ֤אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559to him, “Are you jealousהַֽמְקַנֵּ֥אham.ka.Ne'H7065for my sake?Wouldוּמִ֨י יִתֵּ֜ןu.Mi yi.TenH4310 H5414that allכָּל־kol-H3605the Lord’sיְהוָה֙Yah.wehH3068peopleעַ֤ם'amH5971were prophetsנְבִיאִ֔יםne.vi.'ImH5030,that the Lordיְהוָ֛הYah.wehH3068would putיִתֵּ֧ןyi.TenH5414His Spiritרוּח֖וֹru.ChoH7307upon them!”

30Then Mosesמֹשֶׁ֖הmo.ShehH4872returnedוַיֵּאָסֵ֥ףvai.ye.'a.SefH622to the campהַֽמַּחֲנֶ֑הha.ma.cha.NehH4264, bothhe and the eldersוְזִקְנֵ֥יve.zik.NeiH2205of Israelיִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃Yis.ra.'ElH3478.

The Quail and the Plague
