On Defilement

1Then the LordH3068 spokeH1696 to MosesH4872, sayingH559, 2“CommandH6680 the sonsH1121 of IsraelH3478 that they 1sendH7971 awayH7971 from the campH4264 everyoneH3605 withH6879 leprosyH6879, everyoneH3605 having a 2dischargeH2100, and everyoneH3605 who is 3uncleanH2931 because of contact with a dead personH5315. 3You shall sendH7971 awayH7971 bothH4480 maleH2145 and femaleH5347; you shall sendH7971 them outsideH413H4480H2351 the campH4264 so that they do not defileH2930 their campH4264 whereH834 I dwellH7931 4in their midstH8432.” 4And the sonsH1121 of IsraelH3478 didH6213 soH3651 and sentH7971 them outsideH413H4480H2351 the campH4264; justH3512 asH3512 the LordH3068 had spokenH1696 to MosesH4872, thatH3651 isH3651 whatH3651 the sonsH1121 of IsraelH3478 didH6213.

5Then the LordH3068 spokeH1696 to MosesH4872, sayingH559, 6“SpeakH1696 to the sonsH1121 of IsraelH3478: ‘5WhenH3588 a manH376 orH176 womanH802 commitsH6213 anyH4480H3605 of the sinsH2403 of mankindH120, actingH4603 unfaithfullyH4603H4604 against the LordH3068, and that personH5315 is guiltyH816, 7then 6he shall 7confessH3034 8his sinH2403 whichH834 9he has committedH6213, and he 10shall makeH7725 restitutionH7725 inH7218 fullH7218 for his wrongH817 and addH3254 to it a fifthH2549 of it, and giveH5414 it to him whomH834 he has wrongedH816. 8But ifH518 the personH376 hasH369 noH369 11redeemerH1350 to whom restitutionH7725 may be madeH7725 for the wrongH817, the restitutionH7725 which is madeH7725 for the wrongH817 must go to the LordH3068 for the priestH3548, besidesH4480H905 the ramH352 of atonementH3725, by whichH834 atonementH3722 is madeH3722 for him. 912Also everyH3605 13contributionH8641 pertaining to allH3605 the holyH6944 gifts of the sonsH1121 of IsraelH3478, whichH834 they offerH7126 to the priestH3548, shall be his. 10So everyH376 person’sH376 holyH6944 gifts shall be his; whateverH834 anyoneH376 givesH5414 to the priestH3548, it 14becomesH1961 his.’”

The Adultery Test

11Then the LordH3068 spokeH1696 to MosesH4872, sayingH559, 12“SpeakH1696 to the sonsH1121 of IsraelH3478 and sayH559 to them, ‘IfH3588 anyH376 man’sH376 wifeH802 15goesH7847 astrayH7847 and is unfaithfulH4604 to him, 13and a manH376 hasH7901 16sexualH2233H7901 relationsH2233H7902 with her and it is hiddenH5956 from the eyesH5869 of her husbandH376 and she remainsH5641 undiscoveredH5641, although she has defiledH2930 herselfH1931, and thereH369 isH369 noH369 witnessH5707 against her and she has not been caughtH8610 in the act, 1417if 18an attitudeH7307 of 19jealousyH7068 comesH5674 overH5921 him and he isH7065 jealousH7065 of his wifeH802 when she has defiledH2930 herself, orH176 if 20an attitudeH7307 of jealousyH7068 comesH5674 overH5921 him and he isH7065 jealousH7065 of his wifeH802 when she has not defiledH2930 herself, 15the manH376 shall then bringH935 his wifeH802 to the priestH3548, and shall bringH935 as 21an offeringH7133 for her a tenthH6224 of an 22ephahH374 of barleyH8184 mealH7058; he shall not pourH3332 oilH8081 on it norH3808 putH5414 frankincenseH3828 on it, becauseH3588 it is a grain offeringH4503 of jealousyH7068, a grain offeringH4503 of reminderH2146, 23a reminderH2142 of wrongdoingH5771.

16‘Then the priestH3548 shall bringH7126 her forwardH7126 and have her standH5975 beforeH6440 the LordH3068, 17and the priestH3548 shall takeH3947 holyH6918 waterH4325 in an earthenwareH2789 containerH3627; and 24he shall takeH3947 someH4480 of the dustH6083 that is on the floorH7172 of the tabernacleH4908 and putH5414 it in the waterH4325. 18The priestH3548 shall then have the womanH802 standH5975 beforeH6440 the LordH3068 and letH6544 downH6544 the hair of the woman’sH802 headH7218, and placeH5414 the grain offeringH4503 of reminderH2146 25in her handsH3709, that is, the grain offeringH4503 of jealousyH7068; and in the handH3027 of the priestH3548 is to be the waterH4325 of bitternessH4751 that bringsH779 aH779 curseH779. 19And the priestH3548 shall have her takeH7650 anH7650 oathH7650 and shall sayH559 to the womanH802, “IfH518 noH3808 manH376 has hadH7901 sexualH7901 relationsH7901 with you and ifH518 you have not 26goneH7847 astrayH7847 into uncleannessH2932, as you are underH8478 the authority of your husbandH376, beH5352 27immuneH5352 to thisH428 waterH4325 of bitternessH4751 that bringsH779 aH779 curseH779; 20ifH3588, however, you have 28goneH7847 astrayH7847, though underH8478 the authority of your husbandH376, and ifH3588 you have defiledH2930 yourself and a manH376 otherH1107 thanH1107 your husbandH376 has hadH5414H7903 sexualH5414H7903 intercourseH5414H7903 with you” 21(then the priestH3548 shall have the womanH802 29swearH7650 with the oathH7621 of the curseH423, and the priestH3548 shall sayH559 to the womanH802), “may the LordH3068 makeH5414 you a curseH423 and an oathH7621 amongH8432 your peopleH5971 by the Lord’sH3068 makingH5414 your thighH3409 30shriveledH5307 and your 31bellyH990 swollenH6639; 22and thisH428 waterH4325 that bringsH779 a curseH779 shall goH935 into your 32stomachH4578, to make your bellyH990 swellH6638 upH6638 and your thighH3409 33shrivelH5307.” And the womanH802 34shall sayH559, “AmenH543, AmenH543.”

23‘The priestH3548 shall then writeH3789 theseH428 cursesH423 on a scrollH5612, and he shall 35washH4229 them offH4229 into the waterH4325 of bitternessH4751. 24Then he shall makeH8248 the womanH802 drinkH8248 the waterH4325 of bitternessH4751 that bringsH779 a curseH779, so that the waterH4325 which bringsH779 a curseH779 will goH935 into her 36and cause bitternessH4751. 25And the priestH3548 shall takeH3947 the grain offeringH4503 of jealousyH7068 from the woman’sH802 handH3027, and he shall waveH5130 the grain offeringH4503 beforeH6440 the LordH3068 and bringH7126 it to the altarH4196; 26and 37the priestH3548 shall takeH7061 aH7061 handfulH7061 of the grain offeringH4503 as its reminderH234 offeringH234 and offerH6999 it upH6999 inH6999 smokeH6999 on the altarH4196, and afterwardH310 he shall makeH8248 the womanH802 drinkH8248 the waterH4325. 27When he has madeH8248 her drinkH8248 the waterH4325, then it will comeH1961 aboutH1961, ifH518 she has defiledH2930 herself and has beenH4603 unfaithfulH4603H4604 to her husbandH376, that the waterH4325 which bringsH779 a curseH779 will goH935 into her 38and cause bitternessH4751, and her bellyH990 will swellH6638 upH6638 and her thighH3409 will 39shrivelH5307, and the womanH802 will becomeH1961 40a curseH423 amongH7130 her peopleH5971. 28But ifH518 the womanH802 has not defiledH2930 herself and is cleanH2889, she will beH5352 41immuneH5352 and conceiveH2232 42childrenH2233.

29‘ThisH2088 is the lawH8451 of jealousyH7068: whenH834 a wifeH802, who is underH8478 the authority of her husbandH376, 43goesH7847 astrayH7847 and defilesH2930 herself, 30orH176 whenH834 44an attitudeH7307 of jealousyH7068 comesH5674 overH5921 a manH376 and he isH7065 jealousH7065 of his wifeH802, he shall then have the womanH802 standH5975 beforeH6440 the LordH3068, and the priestH3548 shall applyH6213 allH3605 of thisH2088 lawH8451 to her. 31The manH376, moreover, will beH5352 freeH5352 of 45guiltH5771, but that womanH802 shall 46bearH5375 the consequences of her 47guiltH5771.’”
