Deuteronomy 25:5-9
5WhenH3588 brothersH251 dwellH3427 togetherH3162 and oneH259 of them diesH4191 withoutH369 a sonH1121, the widowH802H4191 must notH3808 marryH1961H376 outsideH2114H2351 the family. Her husband’s brotherH2993 is to take herH3947 as his wifeH802 and fulfill the duty of a brother-in-law for herH935H5921H2992.1 6The first sonH1060 she bearsH3205 will carryH6965 onH5921 the nameH8034 of the deadH4191 brotherH251, so that his nameH8034 will notH3808 be blotted outH4229 from IsraelH3478.
7But ifH518 the manH376 does notH3808 wantH2654 to marryH3947 his brother’s widowH2994, sheH2994 is to goH5927 toH413 the eldersH2205 at the city gateH8179 and sayH559, “My husband’s brotherH2993 refusesH3985 to preserveH6965 his brother’sH251 nameH8034 in IsraelH3478. He is notH3808 willingH14 to perform the duty of a brother-in-law for meH2992.”
8Then the eldersH2205 of his cityH5892 shall summonH7121 him and speakH1696 with himH413. If he persistsH5975 and saysH559, “I do notH3808 wantH2654 to marry herH3947,” 9his brother’s widowH2994 shall go upH5066 to himH413 in the presenceH5869 of the eldersH2205, removeH2502 his sandalH5275, spitH3417 in his faceH6440H6030, and declareH559, “This is whatH3602 is doneH6213 to the manH376 whoH834 will notH3808 maintainH1129 his brother’sH251 lineH1004.”
