Ammon and Aram Defeated

11Now it happenedH1961 afterwardsH310H3651 that 2the kingH4428 of the AmmonitesH1121H5983 diedH4191, and HanunH2586 his sonH1121 becameH4427 kingH4427 in his placeH8478. 2Then DavidH1732 saidH559, “I will showH6213 kindnessH2617 to HanunH2586 the sonH1121 of 3NahashH5176, justH3512 as his fatherH1 showedH6213 kindnessH2617 to me.” So DavidH1732 sentH7971 4someH3027 of his servantsH5650 to consoleH5162 him concerningH413 his fatherH1. But when David’sH1732 servantsH5650 cameH935 to the landH776 of the AmmonitesH1121H5983, 3the princesH8269 of the AmmonitesH1121H5983 saidH559 to HanunH2586 their lordH113, “5Do you thinkH5869 that DavidH1732 is honoringH3513 your fatherH1 becauseH3588 he has sentH7971 consolersH5162 to you? 6Has DavidH1732 not sentH7971 his servantsH5650 to you in orderH5668 to searchH2713 the cityH5892, to spyH7270 it out and overthrowH2015 it?” 4So HanunH2586 tookH3947 David’sH1732 servantsH5650 and 7shavedH1548 offH1548 halfH2677 of their beardsH2206, and 8cutH3772 offH3772 their garmentsH4063 in the middleH2677 as farH5704 as their hipsH8351, and sentH7971 them awayH7971. 5When they toldH5046 it to DavidH1732, he sentH7971 to meetH7122 them, for the menH376 were greatlyH3966 humiliatedH3637. And the kingH4428 saidH559, “9StayH3427 at JerichoH3405 untilH5704 your beardsH2206 growH6779, and then returnH7725.”

6Now when the sonsH1121 of AmmonH5983 sawH7200 that 10they had becomeH887 odiousH887 to DavidH1732, the sonsH1121 of AmmonH5983 sentH7971 and 11hiredH7936 the ArameansH758 of 12Beth-rehobH1050 and the 13ArameansH758 of ZobahH6678, 20,000H6242H505 footH7273 soldiersH7273, and the kingH4428 of 14MaacahH4601 with 1,000H505 menH376, and the menH382 of TobH382 with 12,000H8147H6240H505 menH376. 7When DavidH1732 heardH8085 of it, he sentH7971 JoabH3097 and allH3605 the armyH6635, the mightyH1368 menH1368. 8The sonsH1121 of AmmonH5983 cameH3318 out and drewH6186 up in battleH4421 array 15at the entranceH6607 of the 16cityH8179, while the ArameansH758 of ZobahH6678 and of RehobH7340 and the menH382 of 17TobH382 and MaacahH4601 were by themselvesH905 in the fieldH7704.

9Now when JoabH3097 sawH7200 that 18the battleH6440H4421 was set againstH413 him in frontH6440 and in the rearH268, he selectedH977 from allH3605 the choiceH977 men of IsraelH3478, and arrayedH6186 them againstH7122 the ArameansH758. 10But the remainderH3499 of the peopleH5971 he placedH5414 in the handH3027 of AbishaiH52 his brotherH251, and he arrayedH6186 them againstH7122 the sonsH1121 of AmmonH5983. 11He saidH559, “IfH518 the ArameansH758 are tooH4480 strongH2388 for me, then you shall helpH3444 me, but ifH518 the sonsH1121 of AmmonH5983 are tooH4480 strongH2388 for you, then I will comeH1980 to helpH3467 you. 1219Be strongH2388, and let us showH2388 ourselves courageousH2388 for the sakeH1157 of our peopleH5971 and for the citiesH5892 of our GodH430; and 20may the LordH3068 doH6213 whatH2896 is goodH2896 in His sightH5869.” 13So JoabH3097 and the peopleH5971 whoH834 were with him drewH5066 nearH5066 to the battleH4421 against the ArameansH758, and 21they fledH5127 beforeH4480H6440 him. 14When the sonsH1121 of AmmonH5983 sawH7200 that the ArameansH758 fledH5127, they also fledH5127 beforeH4480H6440 AbishaiH52 and enteredH935 the cityH5892. 22Then JoabH3097 returnedH7725 from fighting againstH5921 the sonsH1121 of AmmonH5983 and cameH935 to JerusalemH3389.

15When the ArameansH758 sawH7200 that they had been 23defeatedH5062 by IsraelH3478, they gatheredH622 themselves togetherH3162. 1624And HadadezerH1909 sentH7971 and broughtH3318 out the ArameansH758 whoH834 were beyondH4480H5676 the 25RiverH5104, and they cameH935 to HelamH2431; and 26ShobachH7731 the commanderH8269 of the armyH6635 of HadadezerH1909 27ledH6440 them. 17Now when it was toldH5046 DavidH1732, he gatheredH622 allH3605 IsraelH3478 together and crossedH5674 the JordanH3383, and cameH935 to HelamH2431. And the ArameansH758 arrayedH6186 themselves to meetH7122 DavidH1732 and foughtH3898 againstH5973 him. 18But the ArameansH758 fledH5127 beforeH4480H6440 IsraelH3478, and DavidH1732 killedH2026 28700H7651H3967 charioteersH7393 of the ArameansH758 and 40,000H705H505 horsemenH6571 and struckH5221 downH5221 ShobachH7731 the commanderH8269 of their armyH6635, and he diedH4191 thereH8033. 19When allH3605 the kingsH4428, servantsH5650 of HadadezerH1909, sawH7200 that they were 29defeatedH5062 by IsraelH3478, 30they madeH7999 peaceH7999 with IsraelH3478 and servedH5647 them. So the ArameansH758 fearedH3372 to helpH3467 the sonsH1121 of AmmonH5983 anymoreH5750.
