1 Samuel 13
Revised Version 1895
1SaulH7586 was thirty yearsH8141 oldH1121 when he began to reignH4427; and he reignedH4427 twoH8147 yearsH8141 over IsraelH3478. 2And SaulH7586 choseH977 him threeH7969 thousandH505 menH376 of IsraelH3478; whereof two thousandH505 were with SaulH7586 in MichmashH4363 and in the mountH2022 of Beth-el, and a thousandH505 were with JonathanH3129 in GibeahH1390 of BenjaminH1144: and the restH3499 of the peopleH5971 he sentH7971 everyH376 manH376 to his tentH168. 3And JonathanH3129 smoteH5221 the garrisonH5333 of the PhilistinesH6430 that was in GebaH1387, and the PhilistinesH6430 heardH8085 of it. And SaulH7586 blewH8628 the trumpetH7782 throughoutH3605 allH3605 the landH776, sayingH559, Let the HebrewsH5680 hearH8085. 4And allH3605 IsraelH3478 heardH8085 sayH559 that SaulH7586 had smittenH5221 the garrisonH5333 of the PhilistinesH6430, and that IsraelH3478 also was had in abomination with the PhilistinesH6430. And the peopleH5971 were gathered togetherH1571 afterH310 SaulH7586 to GilgalH1537. 5And the PhilistinesH6430 assembledH622 themselvesH622 togetherH622 to fightH3898 with IsraelH3478, thirtyH7970 thousandH505 chariotsH7393, and sixH8337 thousandH505 horsemenH6571, and peopleH5971 as the sandH2344 whichH834 is on the seaH3220 shoreH8193 in multitudeH7230: and they cameH5927 upH5927, and pitchedH2583 in MichmashH4363, eastward of Beth-aven. 6When the menH376 of IsraelH3478 sawH7200 that they were in a strait, (for the peopleH5971 were distressed,) then the peopleH5971 didH376 hideH2244 themselvesH2244 in cavesH4631, and in thickets, and in rocksH5553, and in holds, and in pitsH953. 7NowH310 someH3605 of the HebrewsH5680 had gone over JordanH3383 to the landH776 of GadH1410 and GileadH1568; but as for SaulH7586, he was yet in GilgalH1537, and allH3605 the peopleH5971 followedH310 him tremblingH2729. 8And he tarried sevenH7651 daysH3117, accordingH5921 to the setH935 time that SamuelH8050 had appointedH4150: but SamuelH8050 cameH935 notH3808 to GilgalH1537; and the peopleH5971 were scatteredH6327 from him. 9And SaulH7586 saidH559, BringH5927 hither the burntH5930 offering to meH413, and the peaceH8002 offeringsH8002. And he offeredH5927 the burntH5930 offering. 10And it cameH935 to passH935 that, as soon as he had madeH1961 an endH3615 of offering the burntH5930 offering, beholdH2009, SamuelH8050 cameH935; and SaulH7586 wentH3318 outH3318 to meetH7122 him, that he might saluteH1288 him. 11And SamuelH8050 saidH559, WhatH4100 hast thou doneH6213? And SaulH7586 saidH559, BecauseH3588 I sawH7200 that the peopleH5971 were scatteredH5310 from meH5921, and that thou camest notH3808 withinH5921 the daysH3117 appointedH4150, and that the PhilistinesH6430 assembledH622 themselvesH622 togetherH622 at MichmashH4363; 12therefore saidH559 I, NowH6258 will the PhilistinesH6430 comeH5927 downH3381 uponH413 meH413 to GilgalH1537, and I have notH3808 entreated the favour of the LORDH3068: I forcedH662 myself therefore, and offeredH5927 the burntH5930 offering. 13And SamuelH8050 saidH559 to SaulH7586, Thou hast doneH3559 foolishlyH5528: thou hast notH3808 keptH8104 the commandmentH4687 of the LORDH3068 thy GodH430, whichH834 he commandedH6680 thee: for nowH6258 would the LORDH3068 have establishedH3559 thy kingdomH4467 uponH413 IsraelH3478 for everH5769. 14But nowH6258 thy kingdomH4467 shall notH3808 continueH6965: the LORDH3068 hath soughtH1245 him a manH376 afterH5921 his ownH376 heartH3824, and the LORDH3068 hath appointedH6680 him to be princeH5057 over his peopleH5971, becauseH3588 thou hast notH3808 keptH8104 that whichH834 the LORDH3068 commandedH6680 thee. 15And SamuelH8050 aroseH6965, and gat him upH5927 from GilgalH1537 unto GibeahH1390 of BenjaminH1144. And SaulH7586 numberedH6485 the peopleH5971 that were presentH4672 with him, aboutH4480 sixH8337 hundredH3967 menH376. 16And SaulH7586, and JonathanH3129 his sonH1121, and the peopleH5971 that were presentH4672 with them, abodeH3427 in GebaH1387 of BenjaminH1144: but the PhilistinesH6430 encampedH2583 in MichmashH4363. 17And the spoilers cameH3318 outH3318 of the campH4264 of the PhilistinesH6430 in threeH7969 companiesH7218: one companyH4264 turnedH6437 unto the wayH1870 that leadeth to OphrahH6084, unto the landH776 of ShualH7777: 18and anotherH259 companyH7218 turnedH6437 the wayH1870 to Beth-horonH1032: and anotherH259 companyH7218 turnedH6437 the wayH1870 of the borderH1366 that looketh downH8259 uponH5921 the valleyH1516 of ZeboimH6650 towardH1870 the wildernessH4057. 19NowH3588 there was noH3808 smithH2796 foundH4672 throughoutH3605 allH3605 the landH776 of IsraelH3478: for the PhilistinesH6430 saidH559, LestH6435 the HebrewsH5680 makeH6213 them swordsH2719 or spearsH2595: 20but allH3605 the IsraelitesH3478 wentH3381 downH3381 to the PhilistinesH6430, to sharpenH3913 everyH3605 manH376 his share, and his coulter, and his axeH7134, and his mattock; 21yet they had a file for the mattocks, and for the coulters, and for the forks, and for the axesH7134; and to setH5324 the goads. 22SoH1961 it cameH1961 to passH1961 in the dayH3117 of battleH4421, that there was neitherH3808 swordH2719 norH3808 spearH2595 foundH4672 in the handH3027 of anyH3605 of the peopleH5971 that were with SaulH7586 and JonathanH3129: but with SaulH7586 and with JonathanH3129 his sonH1121 was there foundH4672. 23And the garrisonH4673 of the PhilistinesH6430 wentH3318 outH3318 unto the pass of MichmashH4363.
