War with the Philistines

1SaulH7586 was 1thirty yearsH8141 oldH1121 when he began to reignH4427, and he reignedH4427 2forty twoH8147 yearsH8141 overH5921 IsraelH3478.

2Now SaulH7586 choseH977 for himself 3,000H7969H505 men of IsraelH3478, of which 2,000H505 were with SaulH7586 in 3MichmashH4363 and in the hillH2022 countryH2022 of BethelH1008, while 1,000H505 were with JonathanH3083 at 4GibeahH1390 of BenjaminH1144. But he sentH7971 awayH7971 the restH3499 of the peopleH5971, eachH376 to his tentH168. 3JonathanH3083 smoteH5221 5the garrisonH5333 of the PhilistinesH6430 that was in 6GebaH1387, and the PhilistinesH6430 heardH8085 of it. Then SaulH7586 7blewH8628 the trumpetH7782 throughoutH3605 the landH776, sayingH559, “Let the HebrewsH5680 hearH8085.” 4AllH3605 IsraelH3478 heardH8085 8the newsH559 that SaulH7586 had smittenH5221 the garrisonH5333 of the PhilistinesH6430, and alsoH1571 that IsraelH3478 9had becomeH887 odiousH887 to the PhilistinesH6430. The peopleH5971 were then summonedH6817 10to SaulH7586 at GilgalH1537.

5Now the PhilistinesH6430 assembledH622 to fightH3898 with IsraelH3478, 30,000H7970H505 chariotsH7393 and 6,000H8337H505 horsemenH6571, and 11peopleH5971 like the sandH2344 whichH834 is on the seashoreH3220H8193 in abundanceH7230; and they cameH5927 up and campedH2583 in MichmashH4363, eastH6926 of 12Beth-avenH1007. 6When the menH376 of IsraelH3478 sawH7200 that they were in a straitH6862 (for the peopleH5971 were hard-pressedH5065), then 13the peopleH5971 hidH2244 themselves in cavesH4631, in thicketsH2336, in cliffsH5553, in cellarsH6877, and in pitsH953. 7Also some of the HebrewsH5680 crossedH5674 the JordanH3383 into the landH776 of 14GadH1410 and GileadH1568. But as for SaulH7586, he was stillH5750 in GilgalH1537, and allH3605 the peopleH5971 followedH310 him tremblingH2729.

8Now 15he waitedH3176 sevenH7651 daysH3117, according to the appointedH4150 timeH4150 setH834 by SamuelH8050, but SamuelH8050 did not comeH935 to GilgalH1537; and the peopleH5971 were scatteringH6327 from him. 9So SaulH7586 saidH559, “BringH5066 to me the burntH5930 offeringH5930 and the peaceH8002 offeringsH8002.” And 16he offeredH5927 the burntH5930 offeringH5930. 10As soon as he finishedH3615 offeringH5927 the burntH5930 offeringH5930, beholdH2009, SamuelH8050 cameH935; and 17SaulH7586 wentH3318 out to meetH7122 him and to 18greetH1288 him. 11But SamuelH8050 saidH559, “WhatH4100 have you doneH6213?” And SaulH7586 saidH559, “BecauseH3588 I sawH7200 that the peopleH5971 were scatteringH5310 from me, and that you did not comeH935 within the appointedH4150 daysH3117, and that 19the PhilistinesH6430 were assemblingH622 at MichmashH4363, 12therefore I saidH559, ‘NowH6258 the PhilistinesH6430 will comeH3381 downH3381 againstH413 me at GilgalH1537, and I have not askedH2470 the favorH6440 of the LordH3068.’ So I forcedH662 myself and offeredH5927 the burntH5930 offeringH5930.” 13SamuelH8050 saidH559 to SaulH7586, “20You have actedH5528 foolishlyH5528; 21you have not keptH8104 the commandmentH4687 of the LordH3068 your GodH430, whichH834 He commandedH6680 you, for nowH6258 the LordH3068 would have establishedH3559 your kingdomH4467 22overH413 IsraelH3478 23foreverH5704H5769. 14But 24nowH6258 your kingdomH4467 shall not endureH6965. 25The LordH3068 has soughtH1245 out for Himself a manH376 after His own heartH3824, and the LordH3068 has appointedH6680 him as rulerH5057 overH5921 His peopleH5971, becauseH3588 you have not keptH8104 whatH834 the LordH3068 commandedH6680 you.”

15Then SamuelH8050 aroseH6965 and wentH5927 up from GilgalH1537 to 26GibeahH1390 of BenjaminH1144. And SaulH7586 27numberedH6485 the peopleH5971 who were presentH4672 with him, 28about sixH8337 hundredH3967 menH376. 16Now SaulH7586 and his sonH1121 JonathanH3083 and the peopleH5971 who were presentH4672 with them were stayingH3427 in 29GebaH1387 of BenjaminH1144 while the PhilistinesH6430 campedH2583 at MichmashH4363. 17And 30the 31raidersH7843 cameH3318 from the campH4264 of the PhilistinesH6430 in threeH7969 32companiesH7218: oneH259 33companyH7218 turnedH6437 34towardH413H1870 35OphrahH6084, to the landH776 of ShualH7777, 18and anotherH259 36companyH7218 turnedH6437 37towardH1870 38Beth-horonH1032, and anotherH259 39companyH7218 turnedH6437 40towardH1870 the borderH1366 which overlooksH8259H5921 the valleyH1516 of 41ZeboimH6650 toward the wildernessH4057.

19Now 42noH3808 blacksmithH2796 could be foundH4672 in allH3605 the landH776 of IsraelH3478, for the PhilistinesH6430 saidH559, “OtherwiseH6435 the HebrewsH5680 will makeH6213 4344swordsH2719 orH176 spearsH2595.” 20So allH3605 IsraelH3478 wentH3381 downH3381 to the PhilistinesH6430, eachH376 to sharpenH3913 his plowshareH4281, his mattockH855, his axeH7134, and his hoeH4281. 21The chargeH6477 was 45two-thirdsH6371 of a shekel for the plowsharesH4281, the mattocksH855, the forksH7969H7053, and the axesH7134, and to fixH5324 the hoesH1861. 22So it cameH1961 about on the dayH3117 of battleH4421 that 46neitherH3808 swordH2719 norH3808 spearH2595 was foundH4672 in the handsH3027 of anyH3605 of the peopleH5971 whoH834 were with SaulH7586 and JonathanH3083, but they were foundH4672 with SaulH7586 and his sonH1121 JonathanH3083. 23And 47the garrisonH4673 of the PhilistinesH6430 wentH3318 out to 48the passH4569 of MichmashH4363.
