The Broken Jar
1ThusH3541 saysH559 the LordH3068, “GoH1980 and buyH7069 a 1potter’sH3335 earthenwareH2789 2jarH1228, and take someH4480 of the 3eldersH2205 of the peopleH5971 and someH4480 of the 45seniorH2205 priestsH3548. 2Then goH3318 out to the 6valleyH1516 of Ben-hinnomH1121H2011, whichH834 is by the entranceH6607 of the potsherdH2777 gateH8179, and 7proclaimH7121 thereH8033 the wordsH1697 that I tellH1696 you, 3and sayH559, ‘HearH8085 the wordH1697 of the LordH3068, O 8kingsH4428 of JudahH3063 and inhabitantsH3427 of JerusalemH3389: thusH3541 saysH559 the LordH3068 of hostsH6635, the GodH430 of IsraelH3478, “BeholdH2009 I am about to bringH935 a 9calamityH7463 upon thisH2088 placeH4725, at whichH834 the 10earsH241 of everyoneH3605 that hearsH8085 of it will tingleH6750. 4BecauseH3282H834 they have 11forsakenH5800 Me and have 12madeH5235 thisH2088 an alienH5235 placeH4725 and have burnedH6999 13sacrificesH6999 in it to 14otherH312 godsH430, that neitherH3808 they norH3808 their forefathersH1 norH3808 the kingsH4428 of JudahH3063 had ever knownH3045, and because they have filledH4390 thisH2088 placeH4725 with the 15bloodH1818 of the innocentH5355 5and have builtH1129 the 16highH1116 placesH1116 of BaalH1168 to burnH8313 their 17sonsH1121 in the fireH784 as burntH5930 offeringsH5930 to BaalH1168, a thing whichH834 I neverH3808 commandedH6680 or spokeH1696 of, norH3808 did it ever enterH5927 My 18mindH3820; 6thereforeH3651, beholdH2009, 19daysH3117 are comingH935,” declaresH5002 the LordH3068, “when thisH2088 placeH4725 will noH3808 longerH5750 be calledH7121 20TophethH8612 or 21the valleyH1516 of Ben-hinnomH1121H2011, but ratherH3588H518 the valleyH1516 of SlaughterH2028. 7I will 22makeH1238 voidH1238 the counselH6098 of JudahH3063 and JerusalemH3389 in thisH2088 placeH4725, and 23I will cause them to fallH5307 by the swordH2719 beforeH6440 their enemiesH340 and by the handH3027 of those who seekH1245 their lifeH5315; and I will giveH5414 over their 24carcassesH5038 as foodH3978 for the birdsH5775 of the skyH8064 and the beastsH929 of the earthH776. 8I will also makeH7760 thisH2088 cityH5892 a 25desolationH8047 and an object of hissingH8322; 26everyoneH3605 who passesH5674 by it will be astonishedH8074 and hissH8319 becauseH5921 of allH3605 its 27disastersH4347. 9I will make them 28eatH398 the fleshH1320 of their sonsH1121 and the fleshH1320 of their daughtersH1323, and they will eatH398 oneH376 another’sH7453 fleshH1320 in the siegeH4692 and in the distressH4689 with whichH834 their enemiesH340 and those who seekH1245 their lifeH5315 will distressH6693 them.”’
10“Then you are to breakH7665 the 29jarH1228 in the sightH5869 of the menH376 who accompanyH1980H854 you 11and sayH559 to them, ‘ThusH3541 saysH559 the LordH3068 of hostsH6635, “JustH3602 soH3602 will I 30breakH7665 thisH2088 peopleH5971 and thisH2088 cityH5892, evenH3512 as one breaksH7665 a potter’sH3335 vesselH3627, whichH834 cannotH3201H3808 againH5750 be repairedH7495; and they will 31buryH6912 in TophethH8612 32becauseH4480 thereH369 is noH369 other placeH4725 for burialH6912. 12ThisH3651 is howH3651 I will treatH6213 thisH2088 placeH4725 and its inhabitantsH3427,” declaresH5002 the LordH3068, “so as to makeH5414 thisH2088 cityH5892 like TophethH8612. 13The 33housesH1004 of JerusalemH3389 and the housesH1004 of the kingsH4428 of JudahH3063 will be 34defiledH2931 like the placeH4725 TophethH8612, because of allH3605 the 35housesH1004 on whoseH834 rooftopsH1406 they burnedH6999 36sacrificesH6999 to 37allH3605 the heavenlyH8064 hostH6635 and 38pouredH5258 out drinkH5262 offeringsH5262 to otherH312 godsH430.”’”
14Then JeremiahH3414 cameH935 from TophethH8612, whereH834H8033 the LordH3068 had sentH7971 him to prophesyH5012; and he stoodH5975 in the 39courtH2691 of the Lord’sH3068 houseH1004 and saidH559 to allH3605 the peopleH5971: 15“ThusH3541 saysH559 the LordH3068 of hostsH6635, the GodH430 of IsraelH3478, ‘BeholdH2009, I am about to bringH935 on thisH2088 cityH5892 and allH3605 its townsH5892 the entireH3605 calamityH7463 that I have declaredH1696 againstH5921 it, becauseH3588 they have 40stiffenedH7185 their necksH6203 so 41as not to heedH8085 My wordsH1697.’”
