Numbers 11

The People Complain

1Now the peopleH5971 becameH1961 like 1those who complainH596 of adversityH7451 2in the hearingH241 of the LordH3068; and when the LordH3068 heardH8085 it, His angerH639 was kindledH2734, and the fireH784 of the LordH3068 burnedH1197 among them and consumedH398 some of the outskirtsH7097 of the campH4264. 23The peopleH5971 therefore criedH6817 out to MosesH4872, and MosesH4872 prayedH6419 to the LordH3068 and the fireH784 4diedH8257 out. 3So the nameH8034 of that placeH4725 was calledH7121 56TaberahH8404, becauseH3588 the fireH784 of the LordH3068 burnedH1197 among them.

4The 7rabbleH628 whoH834 were amongH7130 them 8hadH183 greedyH8378 desiresH183H8378; and alsoH1571 the sonsH1121 of IsraelH3478 weptH1058 againH7725 and saidH559, “9WhoH4310 will give us 10meatH1320 to eatH398? 511We rememberH2142 the fishH1710 whichH834 we used to eatH398 freeH2600 in EgyptH4714, the cucumbersH7180 and the melonsH20 and the leeksH2682 and the onionsH1211 and the garlicH7762, 6but nowH6258 12our 13appetiteH5315 is goneH3002. ThereH369 is nothingH369 at allH3605 14to lookH5869 at exceptH1115 this mannaH4478.”

715Now the mannaH4478 was like corianderH1407 seedH2233, and its appearanceH5869 like that of 16bdelliumH916. 8The peopleH5971 would goH7751 aboutH7751 and gatherH3950 it and grindH2912 it 17between two millstonesH7347 orH176 beatH1743 it in the mortarH4085, and boilH1310 it in the potH6517 and makeH6213 cakesH5692 with it; and its tasteH2940 was as the tasteH2940 of 18cakesH3955 bakedH3955 with oilH8081. 919When the dewH2919 fellH3381 on the campH4264 at nightH3915, the mannaH4478 would fallH3381 20with it.

The Complaint of Moses

10Now MosesH4872 heardH8085 the peopleH5971 weepingH1058 throughout their familiesH4940, eachH376 manH376 at the doorwayH6607 of his tentH168; and the angerH639 of the LordH3068 was kindledH2734 greatlyH3966, and 21MosesH4872 was displeasedH7489H5869. 1122So MosesH4872 saidH559 to the LordH3068, “WhyH4100 have You 23been so hardH7489 on Your servantH5650? And whyH4100 have I not foundH4672 favorH2580 in Your sightH5869, that You have laidH7760 the burdenH4853 of allH3605 thisH2088 peopleH5971 on me? 12Was it I who conceivedH2029 allH3605 thisH2088 peopleH5971? Was it I who broughtH3205 them forthH3205, that You should sayH559 to me, ‘CarryH5375 them in your bosomH2436 as a 2425nurseH539 carriesH5375 a nursingH3243 infantH3243, to the landH127 whichH834 26You sworeH7650 to their fathersH1’? 13WhereH4480H370 am I to get meatH1320 to giveH5414 to 27allH3605 thisH2088 peopleH5971? For they weepH1058 beforeH5921 me, sayingH559, ‘GiveH5414 us meatH1320 that we may eatH398!’ 1428I aloneH905 am not ableH3201 to carryH5375 allH3605 thisH2088 peopleH5971, becauseH3588 it is tooH4480 29burdensomeH3515 for me. 1530So ifH518 You are going to dealH6213 thusH3602 with me, pleaseH4994 killH2026 me at onceH2026, ifH518 I have foundH4672 favorH2580 in Your sightH5869, and do not let me seeH7200 my wretchednessH7463.”

Seventy Elders to Assist

16The LordH3068 therefore saidH559 to MosesH4872, “GatherH622 for Me 31seventyH7657 menH376 from the eldersH2205 of IsraelH3478, 32whomH834 you knowH3045 to be the eldersH2205 of the peopleH5971 and their officersH7860 and bringH3947 them to the tentH168 of meetingH4150, and let them takeH3320 their standH3320 thereH8033 with you. 1733Then I will comeH3381 downH3381 and speakH1696 with you thereH8033, and I will takeH680 of 34the SpiritH7307 whoH834 is upon you, and will putH7760 Him upon them; and they shall bearH5375 the burdenH4853 of the peopleH5971 with you, so that you will not bearH5375 it all aloneH905. 18SayH559 to the peopleH5971, ‘35ConsecrateH6942 yourselves for tomorrowH4279, and you shall eatH398 meatH1320; for you have weptH1058 36in the earsH241 of the LordH3068, sayingH559, “OhH4310 that someoneH4310 would give us meatH1320 to eatH398! For we were well-offH2895 in EgyptH4714.” Therefore the LordH3068 will giveH5414 you meatH1320 and you shall eatH398. 19You shall eatH398, not oneH259 dayH3117, norH3808 two daysH3117, norH3808 fiveH2568 daysH3117, norH3808 tenH6235 daysH3117, norH3808 twentyH6242 daysH3117, 2037but a wholeH3117 monthH2320, untilH5704H834 it comesH3318 out of your nostrilsH639 and becomesH1961 loathsomeH2214 to you; becauseH3282H3588 38you have rejectedH3988 the LordH3068 whoH834 is amongH7130 you and have weptH1058 beforeH6440 Him, sayingH559, “WhyH4100 did we everH2088 leaveH3318H4480 EgyptH4714?”’” 21But MosesH4872 saidH559, “The peopleH5971, amongH7130 whomH834 I am, are 600,000H8337H3967H505 on footH7273; yet You have saidH559, ‘I will giveH5414 them meatH1320, so that they may eatH398 for a wholeH3117 monthH2320.’ 22Should flocksH6629 and herdsH1241 be slaughteredH7819 for them, to be sufficientH4672 for them? OrH518 should allH3605 the fishH1709 of the seaH3220 be gatheredH622 together for them, to be sufficientH4672 for them?” 23The LordH3068 saidH559 to MosesH4872, “Is 39the Lord’sH3068 40powerH3027 limitedH7114? NowH6258 you shall seeH7200 whether 41My wordH1697 will 42comeH7136 trueH7136 for you orH518 not.”

24So MosesH4872 wentH3318 out and 43toldH1696 the peopleH5971 the wordsH1697 of the LordH3068. Also, he gatheredH622 seventyH7657 menH376 of the eldersH2205 of the peopleH5971, and stationedH5975 them aroundH5439 the tentH168. 2544Then the LordH3068 cameH3381 downH3381 in the cloudH6051 and spokeH1696 to him; and He tookH680 of the SpiritH7307 whoH834 was upon him and placedH5414 Him upon the seventyH7657 eldersH2205. And when the SpiritH7307 restedH5117 upon them, they prophesiedH5012. But they did not doH3254 it againH3254.

26But twoH8147 menH376 had remainedH7604 in the campH4264; the nameH8034 of oneH259 was EldadH419 and the nameH8034 of the 45otherH8145 MedadH4312. And 46the SpiritH7307 restedH5117 upon them (now they were among those who had been registeredH3789, but had not goneH3318 out to the tentH168), and they prophesiedH5012 in the campH4264. 27So a youngH5288 manH5288 ranH7323 and toldH5046 MosesH4872 and saidH559, “EldadH419 and MedadH4312 are prophesyingH5012 in the campH4264.” 28Then 47JoshuaH3091 the sonH1121 of NunH5126, the attendantH8334 of MosesH4872 from his youthH979, saidH559, “48MosesH4872, my lordH113, restrainH3607 them.” 29But MosesH4872 saidH559 to him, “Are you jealousH7065 for my sake? 49WouldH4310H5414 that allH3605 the Lord’sH3068 peopleH5971 were prophetsH5030, that the LordH3068 would putH5414 His SpiritH7307 upon them!” 30Then MosesH4872 50returnedH622 to the campH4264, both he and the eldersH2205 of IsraelH3478.

The Quail and the Plague

3151Now there wentH5265 forthH5265 a windH7307 from the LordH3068 and it broughtH1468 quailH7958 from the seaH3220, and let them fallH5203 besideH5921 the campH4264, about a day’sH3117 journeyH1870 on thisH3541 sideH3541 and a day’sH3117 journeyH1870 on the otherH3541 sideH3541, allH5439 aroundH5439 the campH4264 and 52about two 53cubitsH520 deep on the surfaceH6440 of the groundH776. 32The peopleH5971 54spentH6965 allH3605 dayH3117 and allH3605 nightH3915 and allH3605 the nextH4283 dayH3117, and gatheredH622 the quailH7958 (he who gathered leastH4591 gatheredH622 tenH6235 5556homersH2563) and they spreadH7849 them out for themselves allH5439 aroundH5439 the campH4264. 3357While the meatH1320 was stillH5750 betweenH996 their teethH8127, beforeH2962 it was chewedH3772, the angerH639 of the LordH3068 was kindledH2734 against the peopleH5971, and the LordH3068 struckH5221 the peopleH5971 with a veryH3966 severeH7227 plagueH4347. 34So the nameH8034 of that placeH4725 was calledH7121 5859Kibroth-hattaavahH6914, becauseH3588 thereH8033 they buriedH6912 the peopleH5971 who had beenH183 greedyH183. 35From Kibroth-hattaavahH6914 60the peopleH5971 setH5265 out for HazerothH2698, and they 61remainedH1961 at HazerothH2698.
