Esther 9
Darby Bible
1And in the twelfth monthH2320, that is, the monthH2320 AdarH143, on the thirteenth dayH3117 thereof, when the king's commandment and his decree drew near to be put in execution, in the dayH3117 that the enemiesH341 of the JewsH3064 hoped to have power over them (but it was turnedH2015 to the contrary, that the JewsH3064 had power over them that hatedH8130 them), 2the JewsH3064 gathered themselves together in their citiesH5892 throughout the provincesH4082 of kingH4428 AhasuerusH325, to lay handH3027 on such as soughtH1245 their hurt. And no manH376 could withstand them; for the fearH6343 of them had fallenH5307 upon all the peoplesH5971. 3And all the princesH8269 of the provincesH4082, and the satrapsH323, and the governorsH6346 and officers of the kingH4428, helped the JewsH3064; for the fearH6343 of MordecaiH4782 had fallenH5307 upon them. 4For MordecaiH4782 was greatH1419 in the king's houseH1004, and his fame wentH1980 forth throughout the provincesH4082; for the manH376 MordecaiH4782 became continually greaterH1419. 5And the JewsH3064 smote all their enemiesH341 with the stroke of the swordH2719 and slaughterH4347 and destruction, and did what they would to those that hatedH8130 them. 6And in Shushan the fortress the JewsH3064 slewH2026 and destroyedH6 fiveH2568 hundredH3967 menH376. 7And Parshandatha, and Dalphon, and Aspatha, 8and Poratha, and Adalia, and Aridatha, 9and Parmashta, and Arisai, and Aridai, and Vajezatha, 10the tenH6235 sonsH1121 of HamanH2001 the sonH1121 of Hammedatha, the oppressor of the JewsH3064, they slewH2026; but they laid not their handsH3027 on the prey. 11On that dayH3117 the numberH4557 of those that were slainH2026 in Shushan the fortress was broughtH935 before the kingH4428. 12And the kingH4428 saidH559 to EstherH635 the queenH4436, The JewsH3064 have slainH2026 and destroyedH6 fiveH2568 hundredH3967 menH376 in Shushan the fortress, and the tenH6235 sonsH1121 of HamanH2001; what have they done in the restH7605 of the king's provincesH4082? And what is thy petitionH7596? and it shall be granted thee; and what is thy requestH1246 further? and it shall be done. 13And EstherH635 saidH559, If it please the kingH4428, let it be granted to the JewsH3064 that are in Shushan to do to-morrow alsoH1571 according to this day's decree, and let Haman's tenH6235 sonsH1121 be hangedH8518 upon the gallowsH6086. 14And the kingH4428 commanded it soH3651 to be done: and the decree was givenH5414 at Shushan; and they hangedH8518 Haman's tenH6235 sonsH1121. 15And the JewsH3064 that were in Shushan gathered themselves together on the fourteenth dayH3117 alsoH1571 of the monthH2320 AdarH143, and slewH2026 threeH7969 hundredH3967 menH376 at Shushan; but they laid not their handH3027 on the prey. 16And the other JewsH3064 that were in the king's provincesH4082 gathered themselves together, and stoodH5975 for their lifeH5315, and had restH7605 from their enemiesH341; and they slewH2026 of them that hatedH8130 them seventy-fiveH7657 thousandH505 (but they laid not their handH3027 on the prey), 17on the thirteenth dayH3117 of the monthH2320 AdarH143; and on the fourteenth of the same they restedH5117, and madeH6213 it a dayH3117 of feastingH4960 and joyH8057. 18But the JewsH3064 that were at Shushan gathered themselves togetherH6950 on the thirteenth [dayH3117] thereof, and on the fourteenth thereof; and on the fifteenth of the same they restedH5117, and madeH6213 it a dayH3117 of feastingH4960 and joyH8057. 19ThereforeH3651 the JewsH3064 of the villages that dwellH3427 in the country towns makeH6213 the fourteenth of the monthH2320 AdarH143 a dayH3117 of joyH8057 and feastingH4960, and a goodH2896 dayH3117, and on which they send portionsH4490 oneH376 to another. 20And MordecaiH4782 wroteH3789 these thingsH1697, and sentH7971 lettersH5612 to all the JewsH3064 near and farH7350 that were in all the provincesH4082 of kingH4428 AhasuerusH325, 21to establishH6965 [this] among them, that they should keep the fourteenth dayH3117 of the monthH2320 AdarH143, and the fifteenth dayH3117 of the same, yearly, 22as the daysH3117 on which the JewsH3064 restedH5117 from their enemiesH341, and the monthH2320 that was turnedH2015 to them from sorrowH3015 to joyH8057, and from mourningH60 into a goodH2896 dayH3117; that they should makeH6213 them daysH3117 of feastingH4960 and joyH8057, and of sendingH4916 portionsH4490 oneH376 to another, and giftsH4979 to the poor. 23And the JewsH3064 undertook to do as they had begunH2490, and as MordecaiH4782 had writtenH3789 to them. 24For HamanH2001 the sonH1121 of Hammedatha the AgagiteH91, the oppressor of all the JewsH3064, had devised against the JewsH3064 to destroyH6 them, and had castH5307 PurH6332, that is, the lotH1486, to consume them and to destroyH6 them; 25and whenH834 [Esther] cameH935 before the kingH4428, he commanded by lettersH5612 that his wickedH7451 device, which he had devised against the JewsH3064, should returnH7725 upon his own headH7218; and they hangedH8518 him and his sonsH1121 on the gallowsH6086. 26ThereforeH3651 they calledH7121 these daysH3117 PurimH6332 after the nameH8034 of PurH6332. ThereforeH3651, according to all the wordsH1697 of this letterH107, and for what they had seenH7200 concerning this matterH1697 and what had happened to them, 27the JewsH3064 ordained and took upon them, and upon their seedH2233, and upon all such as joined themselves to them, so that it should not fail, that they would observeH6213 these twoH8147 daysH3117 according to their writing and according to their fixed time, every yearH8141; 28and that these daysH3117 should be rememberedH2142 and observedH6213 throughout every generationH1755, in every familyH4940, every provinceH4082, and every cityH5892, and that these daysH3117 of PurimH6332 should not fail from among the JewsH3064, nor the memorial of them cease from among their seedH2233. 29And queenH4436 EstherH635 the daughterH1323 of AbihailH32, and MordecaiH4782 the JewH3064, wroteH3789 with all authority to confirm this secondH8145 letterH107 of PurimH6332. 30And he sentH7971 lettersH5612 to all the JewsH3064, to the hundredH3967 and twenty-seven provincesH4082 of the kingdomH4438 of AhasuerusH325, wordsH1697 of peaceH7965 and truthH571, 31to confirm these daysH3117 of PurimH6332 in their fixed times, according as MordecaiH4782 the JewH3064 and queenH4436 EstherH635 had enjoined them, and as they had decreed for themselves and for their seedH2233, as to the mattersH1697 of the fastings and their cryH2201. 32And the decree of EstherH635 confirmed these mattersH1697 of PurimH6332; and it was writtenH3789 in the bookH5612.
