The Jews Destroy Their Enemies
1Now 1in the twelfthH8147H6240 monthH2320 (that is, the monthH2320 AdarH143), on 2the thirteenthH7969H6240 3dayH3117, 4whenH834 the king’sH4428 commandH1697 and edictH1881 were to be putH6213 intoH6213 effectH6213, on the dayH3117 whenH834 the enemiesH340 of the JewsH3064 hopedH7663 to gainH7980 the masteryH7980 overH7980 them, it turnedH2015 outH2015 to the contraryH2015 soH834 thatH834 the JewsH3064 themselvesH1992 gainedH7980 masteryH7980 overH7980 those who hatedH8130 them. 25The JewsH3064 assembledH6950 in their citiesH5892 throughoutH3605 the provincesH4082 of KingH4428 AhasuerusH325 to 6attackH7971H3027 those who soughtH1245 7to harmH7463 them; and noH3808 oneH376 could standH5975 againstH6440 them, 8becauseH3588 the dreadH6343 of them had fallenH5307 on allH3605 the peoplesH5971. 3Even allH3605 the officialsH8269 of the provincesH4082, 9the satrapsH323, the governorsH6346, and those who were doingH6213 the king’sH4428 businessH4399 were supportingH5375 the JewsH3064, becauseH3588 the dreadH6343 of MordecaiH4782 had fallenH5307 on them. 4For MordecaiH4782 was greatH1419 in the king’sH4428 houseH1004, and the newsH8089 about him spreadH1980 throughoutH3605 the provincesH4082; for the manH376 MordecaiH4782 10becameH1980 greaterH1980 and greaterH1419. 5So 11the JewsH3064 struckH5221 allH3605 their enemiesH340 with 12the swordH2719, killingH2027 and destroyingH12; and they didH6213 as they pleasedH7522 to those who hatedH8130 them. 6At the citadelH1002 in SusaH7800 the JewsH3064 killedH2026 and eliminatedH6 fiveH2568 hundredH3967 menH376, 7and they killedH2026 ParshandathaH6577, DalphonH1813, AspathaH630, 8PorathaH6334, AdaliaH118, AridathaH743, 9ParmashtaH6534, ArisaiH747, AridaiH742, and VaizathaH2055, 1013the tenH6235 sonsH1121 of HamanH2001 the sonH1121 of HammedathaH1992, the Jews’H3064 enemyH6887; but 14they did not layH7971 their handsH3027 on the plunderH961.
11On that dayH3117 the numberH4557 of those who were killedH2026 at the citadelH1002 in SusaH7800 15was reportedH935 to the kingH4428. 12And the kingH4428 saidH559 to QueenH4436 EstherH635, “The JewsH3064 have killedH2026 and eliminatedH6 fiveH2568 hundredH3967 menH376 and the tenH6235 sonsH1121 of HamanH2001 at the citadelH1002 in SusaH7800. WhatH4100 have they doneH6213 in the restH7605 of the king’sH4428 provincesH4082! 16Now whatH4100 is your requestH7596? It shall also be grantedH5414 you. And whatH4100 is your furtherH5750 wishH1246? It shall also be doneH6213.” 13Then EstherH635 saidH559, “IfH518 it pleasesH5921H2895 the kingH4428, 17let tomorrowH4279 alsoH1571 be grantedH5414 to the JewsH3064 whoH834 are in SusaH7800 to doH6213 according to the edictH1881 of todayH3117; and let Haman’sH2001 tenH6235 sonsH1121 be hangedH8518 on the woodenH6086 gallows.” 14So the kingH4428 commandedH559 that it was to be doneH6213 soH3651; and an edictH1881 was issuedH5414 in SusaH7800, and Haman’sH2001 tenH6235 sonsH1121 were hangedH8518. 15The JewsH3064 whoH834 were in SusaH7800 assembledH6950 alsoH1571 on the fourteenthH702H6240 dayH3117 of the monthH2320 AdarH143 and killedH2026 18threeH7969 hundredH3967 menH376 in SusaH7800, but 19they did not layH7971 their handsH3027 on the plunderH961.
16Now 20the restH7605 of the JewsH3064 whoH834 were in the king’sH4428 provincesH4082 21assembledH6950, to defendH5975 their livesH5315 and 22ridH5117 themselvesH5117 of their enemiesH340, and to killH2026 seventy-fiveH2568H7657 thousandH505 of those who hatedH8130 them; but they did not layH7971 their handsH3027 on the plunderH961. 17This was done on 23the thirteenthH7969H6240 dayH3117 of the monthH2320 AdarH143, and 24on the fourteenthH702H6240 25day they restedH5117 and madeH6213 it a dayH3117 of feastingH4960 and rejoicingH8057.
18But the JewsH3064 whoH834 were in SusaH7800 26assembledH6950 on the thirteenthH7969H6240 and 27the fourteenthH702H6240 28of the same month, and they restedH5117 on the fifteenthH2568H6240 29day and madeH6213 it a dayH3117 of feastingH4960 and rejoicingH8057. 19ThereforeH5921H3651 the JewsH3064 of the ruralH6521 areasH6521, who liveH3427 in 30the ruralH6519 townsH5892, makeH6213 the fourteenthH702H6240 dayH3117 of the monthH2320 AdarH143 a 3132holidayH2896H3117 for rejoicingH8057 and feastingH4960 and 33sendingH4916 portionsH4490 of food to oneH376 anotherH7453.
The Feast of Purim Instituted
20Then MordecaiH4782 recordedH3789 theseH428 eventsH1697, and he sentH7971 lettersH5612 to allH3605 the JewsH3064 whoH834 were in allH3605 the provincesH4082 of KingH4428 AhasuerusH325, both nearH7138 and farH7350, 21obligingH6965H5921 them to celebrateH6213 the fourteenthH702H6240 dayH3117 of the monthH2320 AdarH143, and the fifteenthH2568H6240 dayH3117 34of the same month, annuallyH3605H8141, 22because on those daysH3117 the JewsH3064 35ridH5117 themselvesH5117 of their enemiesH340, and it was a monthH2320 whichH834 was 36turnedH2015 for them from griefH3015 into joyH8057, and from mourningH60 into a 37holidayH2896H3117; that they were to makeH6213 them daysH3117 of feastingH4960 and rejoicingH8057, and 38sendingH4916 portionsH4490 of food to oneH376 anotherH7453, and giftsH4979 to the poorH34.
23So the JewsH3064 undertookH6901 whatH834 they had startedH2490 to doH6213, and whatH834 MordecaiH4782 had writtenH3789 to them. 24For HamanH2001 the sonH1121 of HammedathaH1992, the AgagiteH91, the adversaryH6887 of allH3605 the JewsH3064, had schemedH2803 againstH5921 the JewsH3064 to eliminateH6 them, and 39had castH5307 PurH6332, that is the lotH1486, to disturbH2000 them and eliminateH6 them. 25But 40when it cameH935 41to the king’sH4428 attentionH6440, he commandedH559 by letterH5612 42that his wickedH7451 schemeH4284 whichH834 he had devisedH2803 againstH5921 the JewsH3064 43was to returnH7725 on his own headH7218, and that he and his sonsH1121 were to be hangedH8518 on the woodenH6086 gallows. 26ThereforeH5921H3651 they calledH7121 theseH428 daysH3117 PurimH6332 afterH5921 the nameH8034 of 44PurH6332. 45And 46becauseH5921 of the instructionsH1697 in thisH2088 letterH107, both whatH4100 they had seenH7200 in thisH3602 regardH3602 and whatH4100 had happenedH5060 to them, 27the JewsH3064 establishedH6965 and 47madeH6901 aH6901 customH6901 for themselves, their 48descendantsH2233, and for 49allH3605 those who alliedH3867 themselves with them, so that 50they would not failH5674 51to celebrateH6213 theseH428 twoH8147 daysH3117 according to their 52regulationH3791 and according to their appointedH2163 timeH2165 annuallyH3605H8141. 28So theseH428 daysH3117 were to be rememberedH2142 and celebratedH6213 throughout everyH1755 generationH1755, everyH4940 familyH4940, everyH4082 provinceH4082, and everyH5892 cityH5892; and theseH428 daysH3117 of PurimH6332 were not to 53be neglectedH5674 by the JewsH3064, or their memoryH2143 54fadeH5486 from their 55descendantsH2233.
29Then QueenH4436 EstherH635, 56daughterH1323 of AbihailH32, with MordecaiH4782 the JewH3064, wroteH3789 with fullH3605 authorityH8633 to confirmH6965 57thisH2088 secondH8145 letterH107 about PurimH6332. 30He sentH7971 lettersH5612 to allH3605 the JewsH3064, 58to the 127H7651H6242H3967 provincesH4082 of the kingdomH4438 of AhasuerusH325, namely, wordsH1697 of peaceH7965 and truthH571, 31to establishH6965 theseH428 daysH3117 of PurimH6332 at their appointedH2163 timesH2165, justH3512 asH3512 MordecaiH4782 the JewH3064 and QueenH4436 EstherH635 had establishedH6965 for them, and justH3512 asH3512 they had establishedH6965 for themselvesH5315 and for their 59descendantsH2233, with 60instructionsH1697 61for their timesH6685 ofH6685 fastingH6685 and their mourningH2201. 32The commandH3982 of EstherH635 establishedH6965 theseH428 62customsH1697 for 63PurimH6332, and it was writtenH3789 in the bookH5612.
