8He capturedוַיִּתְפֹּ֛שׂvai.yit.PosH8610אֶת־'et-H853Agagאֲגַ֥ג'a.GagH90kingמֶֽלֶךְ־Me.lekh-H4428of Amalekעֲמָלֵ֖ק'a.ma.LekH6002aliveחָ֑יChaiH2416וְאֶת־ve.'EtH853,but devotedהֶחֱרִ֥ים לְפִי־he.che.Rim le.fi-H2763 H6310allכָּל־kol-H3605the others to destructionהָעָ֖םha.'AmH5971with the swordחָֽרֶב׃Cha.revH2719.

9Saulשָׁא֨וּלsha.'UlH7586and his troopsוְהָעָ֜ם עַל־ve.ha.'Am 'al-H5971 H5921sparedוַיַּחְמֹל֩vai.yach.MolH2550Agagאֲגָ֗ג'a.GagH90,along withוְעַל־ve.'al-H5921the bestמֵיטַ֣בmei.TavH4315of the sheepהַצֹּאן֩ha.tzoNH6629and cattleוְהַבָּקָ֨רve.ha.ba.KarH1241,the fat calvesוְהַמִּשְׁנִ֤יםve.ha.mish.NimH4932andוְעַל־ve.'al-H5921lambsהַכָּרִים֙ha.ka.RimH3733,andוְעַל־ve.'al-H5921the bestהַטּ֔וֹבha.TovH2896of everything elseכָּל־kol-H3605.They were unwillingוְלֹ֥א אָב֖וּve.Lo' 'a.VuH3808 H14to devote them to destructionהַחֲרִימָ֑םha.cha.ri.MamH2763,but they devoted to destructionהֶחֱרִֽימוּ׃ פhe.che.Ri.muH2763allוְכָל־ve.kholH3605that was despisedהַמְּלָאכָ֛ה נְמִבְזָ֥הha.me.la.Khah ne.miv.ZahH4399 H5240and worthlessוְנָמֵ֖סve.na.MesH4549אֹתָ֥הּ'o.TahH853.

10Then the wordדְּבַר־de.var-H1697of the LORDיְהוָ֔הYah.wehH3068cameוַֽיְהִי֙vay.HiH1961toאֶל־'el-H413Samuelשְׁמוּאֵ֖לshe.mu.'ElH8050,sayingלֵאמֹֽר׃le.MorH559,

11“I regretנִחַ֗מְתִּיni.Cham.tiH5162thatכִּֽי־ki-H3588I have made Saulשָׁאוּל֙sha.'UlH7586kingהִמְלַ֤כְתִּיhim.Lakh.tiH4427אֶת־'et-H853לְמֶ֔לֶךְle.Me.lekhH4428,forכִּֽי־ki-H3588he has turned awayשָׁב֙shavH7725from following Meמֵאַֽחֲרַ֔יme.'a.cha.RaiH310andוְאֶת־ve.'EtH853has notלֹ֣אlo'H3808carried outהֵקִ֑יםhe.KimH6965My instructionsדְּבָרַ֖יde.va.RaiH1697.”And Samuelלִשְׁמוּאֵ֔לlish.mu.'ElH8050was distressedוַיִּ֙חַר֙vai.Yi.charH2734and cried outוַיִּזְעַ֥קvai.yiz.'AkH2199toאֶל־'el-H413the LORDיְהוָ֖הYah.wehH3068allכָּל־kol-H3605that nightהַלָּֽיְלָה׃ha.La.ye.lahH3915.

12Early in the morningבַּבֹּ֑קֶרba.Bo.kerH1242Samuelשְׁמוּאֵ֛לshe.mu.'ElH8050got upוַיַּשְׁכֵּ֧םvai.yash.KemH7925to confrontלִקְרַ֥אתlik.RatH7122Saulשָׁא֖וּלsha.'UlH7586,but he was toldוַיֻּגַּ֨ד לִשְׁמוּאֵ֜ל לֵאמֹ֗רvai.yu.Gad lish.mu.'El le.MorH5046 H8050 H559, “Saulשָׁא֤וּלsha.'UlH7586has goneבָּֽא־ba'-H935to Carmelהַכַּרְמֶ֙לָה֙ha.kar.Me.lahH3760,and beholdוְהִנֵּ֨הve.hi.NehH2009,he has set upמַצִּ֥יבma.TzivH5324a monumentיָ֔דYadH3027for himselfand has turnedוַיִּסֹּב֙ וַֽיַּעֲבֹ֔רvai.yi.So vai.ya.'a.VorH5437 H5674and gone downוַיֵּ֖רֶדvai.Ye.redH3381to Gilgalהַגִּלְגָּֽל׃ha.gil.GalH1537.”

13When Samuelשְׁמוּאֵ֖לshe.mu.'ElH8050reachedוַיָּבֹ֥א אֶל־vai.ya.Vo' 'el-H935 H413himשָׁא֑וּלsha.'UlH7586,Saulשָׁא֗וּלsha.'UlH7586saidוַיֹּ֧אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559to him, “May the LORDלַֽיהוָ֔הla.Yah.wehH3068blessבָּר֤וּךְba.RukhH1288youאַתָּה֙'a.TahH859.I have carried outהֲקִימֹ֖תִיha.ki.Mo.tiH6965אֶת־'et-H853the LORD’sיְהוָֽה׃Yah.wehH3068instructionsדְּבַ֥רde.VarH1697.”

14But Samuelשְׁמוּאֵ֔לshe.mu.'ElH8050repliedוַיֹּ֣אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559, “Then whatוּמֶ֛הu.MehH4100isthisהַזֶּ֖הha.ZehH2088בְּאָזְנָ֑יbe.'a.ze.NaiH241bleatingקֽוֹל־kol-H6963of sheepהַצֹּ֥אןha.TzonH6629and lowingוְק֣וֹלve.KolH6963of cattleהַבָּקָ֔רha.ba.KarH1241thatאֲשֶׁ֥ר'a.SherH834Iאָנֹכִ֖י'a.no.KhiH595hearשֹׁמֵֽעַ׃sho.Me.a'H8085?”

15Saulשָׁא֜וּלsha.'UlH7586answeredוַיֹּ֨אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559, “The troopsהָעָם֙ עַל־ha.'Am 'al-H5971 H5921brought themהֱבִיא֗וּםhe.vi.'UmH935אֲשֶׁ֨ר'a.SherH834from the Amalekitesמֵעֲמָלֵקִ֣יme.'a.mal.KiH6003;they sparedחָמַ֤לcha.MalH2550the bestמֵיטַ֤בmei.TavH4315sheepהַצֹּאן֙ha.tzoNH6629and cattleוְהַבָּקָ֔רve.ha.ba.KarH1241toלְמַ֥עַןle.Ma.'anH4616sacrificeזְבֹ֖חַze.Vo.achH2076to the LORDלַיהוָ֣הla.Yah.wehH3068your Godאֱלֹהֶ֑יךָ'e.lo.Hei.khaH430,butוְאֶת־ve.'EtH853the restהַיּוֹתֵ֖רhai.yo.TerH3148we devoted to destructionהֶחֱרַֽמְנוּ׃ סhe.che.Ram.nuH2763.”

16“Stopהֶ֚רֶףHe.refH7503!”exclaimedוַיֹּ֤אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559Samuelשְׁמוּאֵל֙she.mu.'ElH8050אֶל־'el-H413שָׁא֔וּלsha.'UlH7586. “Let me tellוְאַגִּ֣ידָהve.'a.Gi.dahH5046youאֵת֩'etH853whatאֲשֶׁ֨ר'a.SherH834the LORDיְהוָ֛הYah.wehH3068saidדִּבֶּ֧רdi.BerH1696to meאֵלַ֖י'e.LaiH413last nightהַלָּ֑יְלָהha.La.ye.lahH3915.” “Tell meדַּבֵּֽר׃ סda.BerH1696,”Saul repliedוַיֹּ֥אמֶרvai.yo.me.ruH559.

17And Samuelשְׁמוּאֵ֔לshe.mu.'ElH8050saidוַיֹּ֣אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559, “Althoughאִם־'im-H518youאַתָּה֙'a.TahH859were oncesmallקָטֹ֤ןka.TonH6996in your own eyesבְּעֵינֶ֔יךָbe.'ei.Nei.khaH5869,have youאָ֑תָּה'A.tahH859notהֲל֗וֹאha.Lo'H3808become the headרֹ֛אשׁroshH7218of the tribesשִׁבְטֵ֥יshiv.TeiH7626of Israelיִשְׂרָאֵ֖לYis.ra.'ElH3478?The LORDיְהוָ֛הYah.wehH3068anointedוַיִּמְשָׁחֲךָ֧vai.yim.sha.cha.KhaH4886you kingלְמֶ֖לֶךְle.Me.lekhH4428overעַל־'al-H5921Israelיִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃Yis.ra.'ElH3478

18and sentוַיִּשְׁלָחֲךָ֥ יְהוָ֖הvai.yish.la.cha.Kha Yah.wehH7971 H3068you on a missionבְּדָ֑רֶךְbe.Da.rekhH1870,sayingוַיֹּ֗אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559, ‘Goלֵ֣ךְlekhH1980and devote to destructionוְהַחֲרַמְתָּ֞הve.ha.cha.ram.TahH2763אֶת־'et-H853the sinfulהַֽחַטָּאִים֙ha.cha.ta.'ImH2400אֶת־'et-H853Amalekitesעֲמָלֵ֔ק'a.ma.LekH6002.Fightוְנִלְחַמְתָּ֣ve.nil.cham.TaH3898against themuntilעַ֥ד'adH5704you have wiped them outכַּלּוֹתָ֖םka.lo.TamH3615אֹתָֽם׃'o.TamH853.’

19So whyוְלָ֥מָּהve.La.mahH4100did you notלֹא־lo'-H3808obeyשָׁמַ֖עְתָּ בְּק֣וֹלsha.Ma'.ta be.KolH8085 H6963the LORDיְהוָ֑הYah.wehH3068?Why did you rushוַתַּ֙עַט֙va.Ta.'atH5860uponאֶל־'el-H413the plunderהַשָּׁלָ֔לha.sha.LalH7998and doוַתַּ֥עַשׂva.Ta.'asH6213evilהָרַ֖עha.Ra'H7451in the sightבְּעֵינֵ֥יbe.'ei.NeiH5869of the LORDיְהוָֽה׃ סYah.wehH3068?”

20“But I did obeyשָׁמַ֙עְתִּי֙ בְּק֣וֹלsha.Ma'.ti be.KolH8085 H6963the LORDיְהוָ֔הYah.wehH3068,”Saulשָׁא֜וּלsha.'UlH7586אֶל־'el-H413שְׁמוּאֵ֗לshe.mu.'ElH8050אֲשֶׁ֤ר'a.SherH834repliedוַיֹּ֨אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559. “I wentוָאֵלֵ֕ךְva.'e.LekhH1980on the missionבַּדֶּ֖רֶךְba.De.rekhH1870thatאֲשֶׁר־'a.Sher-H834the LORDיְהוָ֑הYah.wehH3068gave meשְׁלָחַ֣נִיshe.la.Cha.niH7971.I brought backוָאָבִ֗יאva.'a.Vi'H935אֶת־'et-H853Agagאֲגַג֙'a.GagH90kingמֶ֣לֶךְMe.lekhH4428of Amalekעֲמָלֵ֔ק'a.ma.LekH6002וְאֶת־ve.'EtH853and devotedהֶחֱרַֽמְתִּי׃he.che.Ram.tiH2763the Amalekites to destructionעֲמָלֵ֖ק'a.ma.LekH6002.

21The troopsהָעָ֧םha.'AmH5971tookוַיִּקַּ֨חvai.yi.KachH3947sheepצֹ֥אןtzonH6629and cattleוּבָקָ֖רu.va.KarH1241from the plunderמֵהַשָּׁלָ֛לme.ha.sha.LalH7998,the best ofרֵאשִׁ֣יתre.ShitH7225the things devoted to destructionהַחֵ֑רֶםha.Che.remH2764,in order to sacrificeלִזְבֹּ֛חַliz.Bo.achH2076themto the LORDלַֽיהוָ֥הla.Yah.wehH3068your Godאֱלֹהֶ֖יךָ'e.lo.Hei.khaH430at Gilgalבַּגִּלְגָּֽל׃ba.gil.GalH1537.”

22But Samuelשְׁמוּאֵ֗לshe.mu.'ElH8050declaredוַיֹּ֣אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559: “Does the LORDלַֽיהוָה֙la.Yah.wehH3068delightהַחֵ֤פֶץha.Che.fetzH2656in burnt offeringsבְּעֹל֣וֹתbe.'o.LotH5930and sacrificesוּזְבָחִ֔יםu.ze.va.ChimH2077as much as in obedienceכִּשְׁמֹ֖עַkish.Mo.a'H8085to His voiceבְּק֣וֹל יְהוָ֑הbe.Kol Yah.wehH6963 H3068?Beholdהִנֵּ֤הhi.NehH2009,obedienceשְׁמֹ֙עַ֙she.Mo.a'H8085is betterט֔וֹבTovH2896than sacrificeמִזֶּ֣בַחmi.Ze.vachH2077, andattentivenessלְהַקְשִׁ֖יבle.hak.ShivH7181is better than the fatמֵחֵ֥לֶבme.Che.levH2459of ramsאֵילִֽים׃'ei.LimH352.
