1Then Nahashנָחָשׁ֙na.ChashH5176the Ammoniteהָֽעַמּוֹנִ֔יha.'a.mo.NiH5984came upוַיַּ֗עַלvai.Ya.'alH5927and laid siegeוַיִּ֖חַןvai.Yi.chanH2583toעַל־'al-H5921Jabesh-gileadיָבֵ֣שׁ גִּלְעָ֑דya.Vesh gil.'AdH3003 H1568.Allכָּל־kol-H3605the menאַנְשֵׁ֤י'an.SheiH582of Jabeshיָבֵישׁ֙ya.VeishH3003saidוַיֹּ֨אמְר֜וּvai.Yo.me.RuH559toאֶל־'el-H413himנָחָ֔שׁna.ChashH5176, “Makeכְּרָת־ke.rot-H3772a treatyבְרִ֖יתve.RitH1285with us,and we will serve youוְנַעַבְדֶֽךָּ׃ve.na.'av.De.kaH5647.”

2But Nahashנָחָשׁ֙na.ChashH5176the Ammoniteהָעַמּוֹנִ֔יha.'a.mo.NiH5984repliedוַיֹּ֣אמֶר אֲלֵיהֶ֗םvai.Yo.mer 'a.lei.HemH559 H413, “I will makeאֶכְרֹ֣ת'ekh.RotH3772a treaty with youon oneבְּזֹאת֙be.zoTH2063condition,that I may put outבִּנְק֥וֹרbin.KorH5365everyone’sכָּל־kol-H3605rightיָמִ֑יןya.MinH3225eyeעֵ֣ין'einH5869and bringוְשַׂמְתִּ֥יהָve.sam.Ti.haH7760reproachחֶרְפָּ֖הcher.PahH2781uponעַל־'al-H5921allכָּל־kol-H3605Israelיִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃Yis.ra.'ElH3478.”

3“Hold offהֶ֤רֶףHe.refH7503forsevenשִׁבְעַ֣תshiv.'AtH7651daysיָמִ֔יםya.MimH3117,”repliedוַיֹּאמְר֨וּvai.yo.me.RuH559אֵלָ֜יו'e.LavH413the eldersזִקְנֵ֣יzik.NeiH2205of Jabeshיָבֵ֗ישׁya.VeishH3003, “and let us sendוְנִשְׁלְחָה֙ve.nish.le.ChahH7971messengersמַלְאָכִ֔יםmal.'a.KhimH4397throughoutבְּכֹ֖לbe.KholH3605גְּב֣וּלge.VulH1366Israelיִשְׂרָאֵ֑לYis.ra.'ElH3478.Ifוְאִם־ve.'im-H518there isno oneאֵ֥ין'einH369to saveמוֹשִׁ֛יעַmo.Shi.a'H3467usאֹתָ֖נוּ'o.Ta.nuH853,we will surrenderוְיָצָ֥אנוּve.ya.Tza.nuH3318to youאֵלֶֽיךָ׃'e.Lei.khaH413.”

4When the messengersהַמַּלְאָכִים֙ha.mal.'a.KhimH4397cameוַיָּבֹ֤אוּvai.ya.Vo.'uH935to Gibeahגִּבְעַ֣תgiv.'AtH1390of Saulשָׁא֔וּלsha.'UlH7586and relayedוַיְדַבְּר֥וּvay.da.be.RuH1696these wordsהַדְּבָרִ֖יםha.de.va.RimH1697in the hearingבְּאָזְנֵ֣יbe.'a.ze.NeiH241of the peopleהָעָ֑םha.'AmH5971,they allכָל־ הָעָ֛םkhol- ha.'AmH3605 H5971אֶת־'et-H853weptוַיִּבְכּֽוּ׃vai.yiv.KuH1058aloudוַיִּשְׂא֧וּ קוֹלָ֖םvai.yis.'U ko.LamH5375 H6963.

5Just thenוְהִנֵּ֣הve.hi.NehH2009Saulשָׁא֗וּלsha.'UlH7586was returningבָּ֣אba'H935fromמִן־min-H4480the fieldהַשָּׂדֶ֔הha.sa.DehH7704,behindאַחֲרֵ֤י'a.cha.ReiH310his oxenהַבָּקָר֙ha.ba.KarH1241. “Whatמַה־mah-H4100troublesthe peopleלָּעָ֖םla.'AmH5971?”askedוַיֹּ֣אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559Saulשָׁא֔וּלsha.'UlH7586. “Whyכִּ֣יkiH3588are they weepingיִבְכּ֑וּyiv.KuH1058?”And they relayedוַיְסַ֨פְּרוּ־vay.Sa.pe.ru-H5608to himאֶת־'et-H853the words ofדִּבְרֵ֖יdiv.ReiH1697the menאַנְשֵׁ֥י'an.SheiH582from Jabeshיָבֵֽישׁ׃ya.VeishH3003.

6When Saul heardכְּשָׁמְע֖וֹke.sha.me.'ovH8085אֶת־'et-H853theirהָאֵ֑לֶּהha.'E.lehH428wordsהַדְּבָרִ֣יםha.de.va.RimH1697,the Spiritרֽוּחַ־Ru.ach-H7307of Godאֱלֹהִים֙'E.lo.HimH430rushedוַתִּצְלַ֤חva.titz.LachH6743uponעַל־'al-H5921himשָׁא֔וּלsha.'UlH7586,and he burned with great angerוַיִּ֥חַר אַפּ֖וֹ מְאֹֽד׃vai.Yi.char 'a.Po me.'OdH639 H2734 H3966.

7He tookוַיִּקַּח֩vai.yi.KachH3947a pairצֶ֨מֶדTze.medH6776of oxenבָּקָ֜רba.KarH1241,cut them into piecesוַֽיְנַתְּחֵ֗הוּvay.na.te.Che.huH5408,and sentוַיְשַׁלַּ֞חvay.sha.LachH7971thembyבְּיַ֣דbe.YadH3027messengersהַמַּלְאָכִ֣ים׀ha.mal.'a.KhimH4397throughoutבְּכָל־be.kholH3605the landגְּב֣וּלge.VulH1366of Israelיִשְׂרָאֵל֮Yis.ra.'ElH3478,proclaimingלֵאמֹר֒le.MorH559, “This is whatכֹּ֥הkohH3541will be doneיֵעָשֶׂ֖הye.'a.SehH6213to the oxenלִבְקָר֑וֹliv.ka.RoH1241of anyone whoאֲשֶׁר֩'a.SherH834does notאֵינֶ֨נּוּ'ei.Ne.nuH369marchיֹצֵ֜אyo.Tze'H3318behindאַחֲרֵ֤י'a.cha.ReiH310Saulשָׁאוּל֙ וְאַחַ֣רsha.'Ul ve.'a.CharH7586 H310and Samuelשְׁמוּאֵ֔לshe.mu.'ElH8050.”Then the terrorפַּֽחַד־pa.chad-H6343of the LORDיְהוָה֙Yah.wehH3068fellוַיִּפֹּ֤לvai.yi.PolH5307uponעַל־'al-H5921the peopleהָעָ֔םha.'AmH5971,and they came out togetherוַיֵּצְא֖וּvai.ye.tze.'UH3318as oneאֶחָֽד׃'e.ChadH259manכְּאִ֥ישׁke.'IshH376.

8And when Saul numbered themוַֽיִּפְקְדֵ֖םvai.yif.ke.DemH6485at Bezekבְּבָ֑זֶקbe.Va.zekH966,there wereוַיִּהְי֤וּvai.yih.YuH1961300,000שְׁלֹ֣שׁ מֵא֣וֹת אֶ֔לֶףshe.Losh me.'ot 'E.lefH7969 H3967 H505Israelitesבְנֵֽי־ יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ve.nei- Yis.ra.'ElH1121 H3478and 30,000שְׁלֹשִׁ֥ים אָֽלֶף׃she.lo.Shim 'A.lefH7970 H505menוְאִ֥ישׁve.'IshH376of Judahיְהוּדָ֖הye.hu.DahH3063.

9So they saidוַיֹּאמְר֞וּvai.yo.me.RuH559to the messengersלַמַּלְאָכִ֣יםla.mal.'a.KhimH4397who had comeהַבָּאִ֗יםha.ba.'ImH935, “Tellתֹֽאמְרוּן֙to.me.RunH559כֹּ֤הkohH3541the menלְאִישׁ֙le.'IshH376of Jabesh-gileadיָבֵ֣ישׁ גִּלְעָ֔דya.Veish gil.'AdH3003 H1568: ‘Deliveranceתְּשׁוּעָ֖הte.shu.'AhH8668will beתִּהְיֶֽה־tih.yeh-H1961yourstomorrowמָחָ֛רma.CharH4279by the time the sunהַשָּׁ֑מֶשׁ וַיָּבֹ֣אוּha.Sha.mesh vai.ya.Vo.'uH8121 H935is hotכְּחֹ֣םke.chomH2527.’”And when the messengersהַמַּלְאָכִ֗יםha.mal.'a.KhimH4397relayedוַיַּגִּ֛ידוּvai.ya.Gi.duH5046thisto the menלְאַנְשֵׁ֥יle.'an.SheiH582of Jabeshיָבֵ֖ישׁya.VeishH3003,they rejoicedוַיִּשְׂמָֽחוּ׃vai.yis.Ma.chuH8055.

10Then the menאַנְשֵׁ֣י'an.SheiH582of Jabeshיָבֵ֔ישׁya.VeishH3003saidוַֽיֹּאמְרוּ֙vai.yo.me.RuH559to Nahash, “Tomorrowמָחָ֖רma.CharH4279we will come outנֵצֵ֣א אֲלֵיכֶ֑םne.Tze' 'a.lei.KhemH3318 H413,and you can doוַעֲשִׂיתֶ֣םva.'a.si.TemH6213with uswhateverכְּכָל־ke.khol-H3605seems goodהַטּ֖וֹבha.TovH2896to youבְּעֵינֵיכֶֽם׃ סbe.'ei.nei.KhemH5869.”

11וַיְהִ֣יvay.HiH1961The next dayמִֽמָּחֳרָ֗תmi.mo.cho.RatH4283Saulשָׁא֣וּלsha.'UlH7586אֶת־'et-H853organizedוַיָּ֨שֶׂםvai.Ya.semH7760the troopsהָעָם֮ha.'AmH5971into threeשְׁלֹשָׁ֣הshe.lo.ShahH7969divisionsרָאשִׁים֒ra.ShimH7218,and during the morningהַבֹּ֔קֶרha.Bo.kerH1242watchבְּאַשְׁמֹ֣רֶתbe.'ash.Mo.retH821they invadedוַיָּבֹ֤אוּ בְתוֹךְ־vai.ya.Vo.'u ve.tokh-H935 H8432the campהַֽמַּחֲנֶה֙ha.ma.cha.NehH4264of the Ammonitesעַמּ֖וֹןa.MonH5983and slaughtered themוַיַּכּ֥וּvai.ya.KuH5221אֶת־'et-H853,untilעַד־'ad-H5704the hottest partחֹ֣םchomH2527of the dayהַיּ֑וֹםhai.YomH3117.Andוַיְהִ֤יvay.HiH1961the survivorsהַנִּשְׁאָרִים֙ha.nish.'a.RimH7604were so scatteredוַיָּפֻ֔צוּvai.ya.Fu.tzuH6327that noוְלֹ֥אve.Lo'H3808twoשְׁנַ֥יִםshe.Na.yimH8147of themwere leftנִשְׁאֲרוּ־nish.'a.ru-H7604togetherיָֽחַד׃Ya.chadH3162.

12Then the peopleהָעָם֙ha.'AmH5971saidוַיֹּ֤אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559toאֶל־'el-H413Samuelשְׁמוּאֵ֔לshe.mu.'ElH8050, “Whoמִ֣יmiH4310saidהָאֹמֵ֔רha.'o.MerH559that Saulשָׁא֖וּלsha.'UlH7586should not reignיִמְלֹ֣ךְyim.LokhH4427over usעָלֵ֑ינוּ'a.Lei.nuH5921?Bringתְּנ֥וּte.NuH5414those men hereהָאֲנָשִׁ֖יםha.'a.na.ShimH582so we can kill themוּנְמִיתֵֽם׃u.ne.mi.TemH4191!”

13But Saulשָׁא֔וּלsha.'UlH7586orderedוַיֹּ֣אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559, “Noלֹֽא־lo'-H3808oneאִ֖ישׁ'ishH376shall be put to deathיוּמַ֥תyu.MatH4191thisהַזֶּ֑הha.ZehH2088dayבַּיּ֣וֹםbai.YomH3117,forכִּ֥יkiH3588todayהַיּ֛וֹםhai.YomH3117the LORDיְהוָ֥הYah.wehH3068has workedעָשָֽׂה־'a.sah-H6213salvationתְּשׁוּעָ֖הte.shu.'AhH8668in Israelבְּיִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ סbe.Yis.ra.'ElH3478.”

14Then Samuelשְׁמוּאֵל֙she.mu.'ElH8050saidוַיֹּ֤אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559toאֶל־'el-H413the peopleהָעָ֔םha.'AmH5971, “Comeלְכ֖וּle.KhuH1980,let us goוְנֵלְכָ֣הve.ne.le.KhahH1980to Gilgalהַגִּלְגָּ֑לha.gil.GalH1537and renewוּנְחַדֵּ֥שׁu.ne.cha.DeshH2318the kingshipהַמְּלוּכָֽה׃ha.me.lu.KhahH4410thereשָׁ֖םshamH8033.”
