The Brothers Are Brought Back
11Then he commandedH6680 his houseH1004 stewardH834H5921, sayingH559, “FillH4390 the men’sH376 sacksH572 with foodH400, asH3512 muchH3512 asH3512 they canH3201 carryH5375, and putH7760 eachH376 man’sH376 moneyH3701 in the openingH6310 of his sackH572. 2And putH7760 my cupH1375, the silverH3701 cupH1375, in the openingH6310 of the sackH572 of the youngestH6996, and his moneyH3701 for the grainH7668.” And he didH6213 2as JosephH3130 had toldH1696 him. 33As soonH1242 as it was lightH215, the menH376 were sentH7971 awayH7971, they with their donkeysH2543. 4They had just leftH3318 4the cityH5892, and wereH7368 not farH7368 awayH7368, when JosephH3130 saidH559 to his houseH1004 stewardH834H5921, “Up, followH7291H310 the menH376; and when you overtakeH5381 them, sayH559 to them, ‘WhyH4100 have you repaidH7999 evilH7463 for goodH2899? 5Is thisH2088 not that from whichH834 my lordH113 drinksH8354, and which he indeedH5172 usesH5172 forH5172 5divinationH5172? You have doneH7489 wrongH7489 in doingH6213 thisH834!’”
6So 6he overtookH5381 them and spokeH1696 theseH428 wordsH1697 to them. 7And they saidH559 to him, “WhyH4100 does my lordH113 sayH1696 such wordsH1697 as theseH428? FarH2486 be it from your servantsH5650 to doH6213 suchH2088 a thingH1697! 8BeholdH2005, 7the moneyH3701 whichH834 we foundH4672 in the openingH6310 of our sacksH572 we have broughtH7725 backH7725 to you from the landH776 of CanaanH3667. HowH349 then could we stealH1589 silverH3701 orH176 goldH2091 from your lord’sH113 houseH1004? 98With whomeverH834 of your servantsH5650 it is foundH4672, he shall dieH4191, and we alsoH1571 shall be my lord’sH113 9slavesH5650.” 10So he saidH559, “NowH6258 let it indeedH1571 be according to your wordsH1697; he with whomH834 it is foundH4672 shall be my slaveH5650, but the rest of you shall be considered innocentH5355.” 11Then they hurriedH4116, eachH376 manH376 loweredH3381 his sackH572 to the groundH776, and eachH376 manH376 openedH6605 his sackH572. 12And he searchedH2664, beginningH2490 with the oldestH1419 and endingH3615 with the youngestH6996; and 10the cupH1375 was foundH4672 in Benjamin’sH1144 sackH572. 13Then they 11toreH7167 their clothesH8071 in grief, and when eachH376 manH376 had loadedH6006 his donkeyH2543, they returnedH7725 to 12the cityH5892.
14When JudahH3063 and his brothersH251 cameH935 to Joseph’sH3130 houseH1004, he was stillH5750 thereH8033, and 13they fellH5307 downH5307 to the groundH776 beforeH6440 him. 15JosephH3130 saidH559 to them, “WhatH4100 is thisH2088 thingH4639 that you have doneH6213? Do you not knowH3045 that a manH376 whoH834 is likeH3644 me can indeedH5172 practiceH5172 14divinationH5172?” 16So JudahH3063 saidH559, “WhatH4100 can we sayH559 to my lordH113? WhatH4100 words can we speakH1696? And howH4100 can we justifyH6663 ourselves? GodH430 has foundH4672 outH4672 the guiltH5771 of your servantsH5650; beholdH2009, we are my lord’sH113 15slavesH5650, bothH1571 we and the one in whoseH834 16possessionH3027 the cupH1375 has been foundH4672.” 17But he saidH559, “FarH2486 be it from me to doH6213 thisH2088. The manH376 in whoseH834 17possessionH3027 the cupH1375 has been foundH4672, he shall be my slaveH5650; but as for you, goH5927 upH5927 in peaceH7965 to your fatherH1.”
18Then JudahH3063 approachedH5066 him and saidH559, “OhH994 my lordH113, may your servantH5650 pleaseH4994 speakH1696 a wordH1697 in my lord’sH113 earsH241, and 1819do not beH2734 angryH639H2734 with your servantH5650; for 20you are equal to PharaohH6547. 1921My lordH113 askedH7592 his servantsH5650, sayingH559, ‘HaveH3426 you a fatherH1 orH176 a brotherH251?’ 20And we saidH559 to my lordH113, ‘We haveH3426 an oldH2205 fatherH1 and 22a littleH6996 boyH3206 born in our father’s oldH2208 ageH2208. Now 23his brotherH251 is deadH4191, so he aloneH905 is leftH3498 of his motherH517, and his fatherH1 lovesH157 him.’ 21Then you saidH559 to your servantsH5650, ‘24BringH3381 him downH3381 to me so that I may setH7760 my eyesH5869 on him.’ 22But we saidH559 to my lordH113, ‘The boyH5288 cannotH3201H3808 leaveH5800 his fatherH1, for if he should leaveH5800 his fatherH1, 25his father would dieH4191.’ 23You saidH559 to your servantsH5650, however, ‘26UnlessH518H3808 your youngestH6996 brotherH251 comesH3381 downH3381 with you, you will not seeH7200 my faceH6440 againH3254.’ 24So it cameH1961 aboutH1961 whenH3588 we wentH5927 upH5927 to your servantH5650 my fatherH1, we toldH5046 him the wordsH1697 of my lordH113. 25And 27our fatherH1 saidH559, ‘GoH7725 backH7725, buyH7666 us a littleH4592 foodH400.’ 26But we saidH559, ‘We cannotH3201H3808 goH3381 downH3381. IfH518 our youngestH6996 brotherH251 is with us, then we will goH3381 downH3381; for we cannotH3201H3808 seeH7200 the man’sH376 faceH6440 unlessH369 our youngestH6996 brotherH251 is with us.’ 27Then your servantH5650 my fatherH1 saidH559 to us, ‘You knowH3045 that 28my wifeH802 boreH3205 me twoH8147 sons; 28and the oneH259 leftH3318 me, and 29I saidH559, “SurelyH389 he is tornH2963 toH2963 piecesH2963,” and I have not seenH7200 him sinceH5704H2008. 29If you alsoH1571 takeH3947 thisH2088 oneH2088 from 30me, and harmH611 happensH7136 to him, you will 31bringH3381 my grayH7872 hairH7872 downH3381 to SheolH7585 in 32sorrowH7463.’ 30So nowH6258, when I comeH935 to your servantH5650, my fatherH1, and the boyH5288 is not with us--since 3334our father’s lifeH5315 is soH7194 attachedH7194 to the boy’s lifeH5315-- 31when he seesH7200 that the boyH5288 is not with us, he will dieH4191. So your servantsH5650 will 35bringH3381 the grayH7872 hairH7872 of your servantH5650, our fatherH1, downH3381 to SheolH7585 in sorrowH3015. 32For your servantH5650 36acceptedH6148 responsibilityH6148 for the boyH5288 from my fatherH1, sayingH559, ‘IfH518 I do not bringH935 him back to you, then 37my fatherH1 can let me takeH2398 the blameH2398 foreverH3605H3117.’ 33So nowH6258, pleaseH4994 let your servantH5650 remainH3427 as a slaveH5650 to my lordH113 insteadH8478 ofH8478 the boyH5288, and let the boyH5288 goH5927 upH5927 with his brothersH251. 34For howH349 shall I goH5927 upH5927 to my fatherH1 if the boyH5288 is not with me? I fear that I may seeH7200 the evilH7451 that would 38overtakeH4672 my fatherH1.”
