Isaac Settles in Gerar
1Now there was 1a famineH7458 in the landH776, besidesH4480H905 the previousH7223 famineH7458 that had occurredH1961 in the daysH3117 of AbrahamH85. So IsaacH3327 wentH1980 to GerarH1642, to 2AbimelechH40 kingH4428 of the PhilistinesH6430. 2And the LordH3068 3appearedH7200 to him and saidH559, “Do not goH3381 downH3381 to EgyptH4714; 4stayH7931 in the landH776 of whichH834 I shall tellH559 you. 3LiveH1481 forH1481 aH1481 timeH1481 in thisH2088 landH776 and 5I will be with you and 6blessH1288 you, for 7to you and to your 8descendantsH2233 I will giveH5414 allH3605 theseH411 landsH776, and I will establishH6965 9the oathH7621 whichH834 I sworeH7650 to your fatherH1 AbrahamH85. 410I will multiplyH7235 your 11descendantsH2233 as the starsH3556 of heavenH8064, and will giveH5414 your 12descendantsH2233 allH3605 theseH411 landsH776; and 13by your 14descendantsH2233 allH3605 the nationsH1471 of the earthH776 15shall be blessedH1288, 5becauseH6118H834 AbrahamH85 1617obeyedH8085H6963 Me and fulfilledH8104 his dutyH4931 to Me, and kept My commandmentsH4687, My statutesH2708, and My lawsH8451.”
6So IsaacH3327 livedH3427 in GerarH1642. 7When the menH376 of the placeH4725 askedH7592 about his wifeH802, he saidH559, “18She is my sisterH269,” for he wasH3372 19afraidH3372 to sayH559, “my wifeH802,” thinking, “20the menH376 of the placeH4725 might killH2026 me onH5921 accountH5921 ofH5921 RebekahH7259, sinceH3588 she is 21beautifulH2896.” 8Now it cameH1961 aboutH1961, whenH3588 he had been thereH8033 a longH748 timeH3117, that AbimelechH40 kingH4428 of the PhilistinesH6430 lookedH8259 downH8259 throughH1157 a windowH2474, and sawH7200 them, and beholdH2009, IsaacH3327 was caressingH6711 his wifeH802 RebekahH7259. 9Then AbimelechH40 calledH7121 IsaacH3327 and saidH559, “BeholdH2009, she certainlyH389 is your wifeH802! So howH349 is it that you saidH559, ‘She is my sisterH269’?” And IsaacH3327 saidH559 to him, “BecauseH3588 I thoughtH559, ‘otherwiseH6435 I mightH6435 be killedH4191 onH5921 accountH5921 ofH5921 her.’” 10And 22AbimelechH40 saidH559, “WhatH4100 is thisH2088 that you have doneH6213 to us? OneH259 of the peopleH5971 might easilyH4592 have sleptH7901 with your wifeH802, and you would have broughtH935 guiltH817 upon us.” 11So AbimelechH40 commandedH6680 allH3605 the peopleH5971, sayingH559, “He who 23touchesH5060 thisH2088 manH376 or his wifeH802 will certainlyH4191 be putH4191 toH4191 deathH4191.”
12Now IsaacH3327 sowedH2232 in that landH776 and 24reapedH4672 in the sameH1931 yearH8141 a hundredH3967 timesH8180 as much. And 25the LordH3068 blessedH1288 him, 13and the manH376 26becameH1431 richH1431, and continuedH1980 to growH1432 27richerH1432 untilH5704 he becameH1431 veryH3966 28wealthyH1431; 14for 29he hadH1961 possessionsH4735 of flocksH6629 30and herdsH1241, and a greatH7227 householdH5657, so that the PhilistinesH6430 enviedH7065 him. 15Now 31allH3605 the wellsH875 whichH834 his father’sH1 servantsH5650 had dugH2658 in the daysH3117 of his fatherH1 AbrahamH85, the PhilistinesH6430 stoppedH5640 upH5640 32by fillingH4390 them with dirtH6083. 16Then AbimelechH40 saidH559 to IsaacH3327, “GoH1980 away from us, for you areH6105 3334tooH3966 powerfulH6105 for us.” 17So IsaacH3327 departedH1980 from thereH8033 and campedH2583 in the ValleyH5158 of GerarH1642, and 35settledH3427 thereH8033.
Argument over the Wells
18Then IsaacH3327 dugH2658 againH7725 the wellsH875 of waterH4325 whichH834 36had been dugH2658 in the daysH3117 of his fatherH1 AbrahamH85, for the PhilistinesH6430 had stoppedH5640 them upH5640 afterH310 the deathH4194 of AbrahamH85; and he 37gaveH7121 them the sameH8034 namesH8034 whichH834 his fatherH1 had 38givenH7121 them. 19But when Isaac’sH3327 servantsH5650 dugH2658 in the valleyH5158 and foundH4672 thereH8033 a wellH875 of 39flowingH2416 waterH4325, 20the herdsmenH7462 of GerarH1642 40quarreledH7378 with the herdsmenH7462 of IsaacH3327, sayingH559, “The waterH4325 is ours!” So he namedH7121H8034 the wellH875 41EsekH6230, becauseH3588 they arguedH6229 with him. 21Then they dugH2658 anotherH312 wellH875, and they quarreledH7378 overH5921 it tooH1571, so he namedH7121H8034 it 42SitnahH7856. 22Then he movedH6275 awayH6275 from thereH8033 and dugH2658 anotherH312 wellH875, and they did not quarrelH7378 overH5921 it; so he namedH7121H8034 it 43RehobothH7344, for he saidH559, “4445AtH3588H6258 lastH3588H6258 the LordH3068 has madeH7337 46roomH7337 for us, and we will beH6509 47fruitfulH6509 in the landH776.”
23And he wentH5927 upH5927 from thereH8033 to 48BeershebaH884. 24And the LordH3068 49appearedH7200 to him the sameH1931 nightH3915 and saidH559, “50I am the GodH430 of your fatherH1 AbrahamH85; 51Do not fearH3372, for I am with you. I 52will blessH1288 you and multiplyH7235 your 53descendantsH2233, For the sakeH5668 of My servantH5650 AbrahamH85.” 25So he builtH1129 an 54altarH4196 thereH8033 and calledH7121 upon the nameH8034 of the LordH3068, and pitchedH5186 his tentH168 thereH8033; and thereH8033 Isaac’sH3327 servantsH5650 dugH3738 a wellH875.
Covenant with Abimelech
26Then 55AbimelechH40 cameH1980 to him from GerarH1642 56with his adviserH4828 AhuzzathH276, and PhicolH6369 the commanderH8269 of his armyH6635. 27IsaacH3327 saidH559 to them, “57WhyH4069 have you comeH935 to me, since you hateH8130 me and have sentH7971 me awayH7971 from you?” 28They saidH559, “We have seenH7200 plainlyH7200 58that the LordH3068 has beenH1961 with you; so we saidH559, ‘An oathH423 must nowH4994 be taken 59by us,’ that is, 60by you and us. So let us makeH3772 a covenantH1285 with you, 29that you will doH6213 us noH518 harmH7463, justH3512 asH3512 we have not touchedH5060 you 61and have doneH6213 to you nothingH7534 butH7534 goodH2896, and have sentH7971 you awayH7971 in peaceH7965. You are nowH6258 the 62blessedH1288 of the LordH3068.” 30Then 63he madeH6213 them a feastH4960, and they ateH398 and drankH8354. 31In the morningH1242 they gotH7925 upH7925 earlyH7925 and 6465exchangedH7650 oathsH7650; then IsaacH3327 sentH7971 them awayH7971, and they leftH1980 him in peaceH7965. 32Now it cameH1961 aboutH1961 on the sameH1931 dayH3117, that Isaac’sH3327 servantsH5650 cameH935 inH935 and toldH5046 him aboutH5921H182 the wellH875 whichH834 they had dugH2658, and saidH559 to him, “We have foundH4672 waterH4325.” 33So he calledH7121 it 66ShibahH7656; thereforeH5921H3651 the nameH8034 of the cityH5892 is 67BeershebaH884 to thisH2088 dayH3117.
34When EsauH6215 was fortyH705 yearsH8141 oldH1121 68he 69marriedH3947H802 JudithH3067 the daughterH1323 of BeeriH882 the HittiteH2850, and BasemathH1315 the daughterH1323 of ElonH356 the HittiteH2850; 35and 70they 71broughtH1961 griefH4786H7307 to IsaacH3327 and RebekahH7259.
