14And it cameH1961aboutH1961,when the kingמֶֽלֶךְ־Me.lekh-H4428of Aiהָעַ֗יha.'AiH5857sawכִּרְא֣וֹתkir.'otH7200them,that the menH376of the cityהָעִ֣ירha.'IrH5892hurriedוַֽיְמַהֲר֡וּvay.ma.ha.RuH4116and gotH7925upH7925earlyוַיַּשְׁכִּ֡ימוּvai.yash.Ki.muH7925,and wentH3318outH3318to meetלִקְרַֽאת־lik.rat-H7122Israelיִ֠שְׂרָאֵלYis.ra.'elH3478in battleלַֽמִּלְחָמָ֞הla.mil.cha.MahH4421,he and allוְכָל־ve.kholH3605his peopleעַמּ֛וֹa.MoH5971at the appointedלַמּוֹעֵ֖דla.mo.'EdH4150placeH4150beforeלִפְנֵ֣יlif.NeiH6440the desertH6160plainH6160.But he did not knowיָדַ֔עya.Da'H3045that there wasan ambushאֹרֵ֥ב'o.RevH693against him behindמֵאַחֲרֵ֥יme.'a.cha.ReiH4480 H310the cityהָעִֽיר׃ha.'IrH5892.

15Then Joshuaיְהוֹשֻׁ֥עַye.ho.Shu.a'H3091and allוְכָל־ve.kholH3605Israelיִשְׂרָאֵ֖לYis.ra.'ElH3478pretendedH5060toH5060beH5060defeatedH5060beforeלִפְנֵיהֶ֑םlif.nei.HemH6440them, and fledוַיָּנֻ֖סוּvai.ya.Nu.suH5127by the wayדֶּ֥רֶךְDe.rekhH1870of the wildernessהַמִּדְבָּֽר׃ha.mid.BarH4057.

16And allכָּל־kol-H3605the peopleהָעָם֙ha.'AmH5971whoאֲשֶׁ֣ר'a.SherH834were in the cityהָעִֽיר׃ha.'IrH5892were calledH2199togetherוַיִּזָּעֲק֗וּvai.yi.za.'a.KuH2199to pursueלִרְדֹּ֖ףlir.DofH7291them, and they pursuedוַֽיִּרְדְּפוּ֙vai.yir.de.FuH7291Joshuaיְהוֹשֻׁ֔עַye.ho.Shu.a'H3091andwere luredH5423awayH5423from the cityH5892.

17So not a manאִ֗ישׁ'IshH376was leftנִשְׁאַ֣רnish.'ArH7604in Aiבָּעַי֙ba.'AiH5857or BethelH1008,but they had all goneH3318outH3318afterH310Israelיִשְׂרָאֵ֑לYis.ra.'ElH3478,and they leftוַיַּעַזְב֤וּvai.ya.'az.VuH5800the cityהָעִיר֙ha.'IrH5892unguardedפְּתוּחָ֔הpe.tu.ChahH6605and pursuedוַֽיִּרְדְּפ֖וּvai.yir.de.FuH7291Israelיִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ פYis.ra.'ElH3478.

18Then the Lordיְהוָ֜הYah.wehH3068saidוַיֹּ֨אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559to Joshuaיְהוֹשֻׁ֗עַye.ho.Shu.a'H3091, “ReachH5186outH5186with the swordבַּכִּיד֤וֹןba.ki.DonH3591that is in your handבְּיָֽדְךָ֙be.ya.de.KhaH3027towardH413Aiהָעַ֔יha.'AiH5857,for I will handבְיָדְךָ֖ve.ya.de.KhaH5414 H3027it overH5414to you.” So Joshuaיְהוֹשֻׁ֛עַye.ho.Shu.a'H3091reachedH5186outH5186with the swordבַּכִּיד֥וֹןba.ki.DonH3591that was in his handבְּיָד֖וֹbe.ya.DoH3027towardH413the cityהָעִֽיר׃ha.'IrH5892.

19Then the men inambushוְהָאוֹרֵ֡בve.ha.'o.RevH693roseקָם֩kamH6965quicklyמְהֵרָ֨הme.he.RahH4120from their placeמִמְּקוֹמ֤וֹmi.me.ko.MoH4725,and when he had reachedH5186outH5186with his handיָד֔וֹya.DoH3027,they ranוַיָּר֙וּצוּ֙vai.ya.Ru.tzuH7323and enteredוַיָּבֹ֥אוּvai.ya.Vo.'uH935the cityהָעִ֖ירha.'IrH5892and capturedוַֽיִּלְכְּד֑וּהָvai.yil.ke.Du.haH3920it, and they quicklyוַֽיְמַהֲר֔וּvay.ma.ha.RuH4116setוַיַּצִּ֥יתוּvai.ya.Tzi.tuH3341the cityהָעִ֖ירha.'IrH5892on fireבָּאֵֽשׁ׃ba.'EshH784.

20When the menH376of Aiהָעַ֨יha.'AiH5857turnedוַיִּפְנ֣וּvai.yif.NuH6437backאַחֲרֵיהֶ֜ם'a.cha.rei.HemH310and lookedוַיִּרְא֗וּvai.yir.'UH7200,beholdוְהִנֵּ֨הve.hi.NehH2009,the smokeעֲשַׁ֤ן'a.ShanH6227of the cityהָעִיר֙ha.'IrH5892ascendedעָלָ֜ה'a.LahH5927to the skyהַשָּׁמַ֔יְמָהha.sha.May.mahH8064,and they hadהָיָ֨הha.YahH1961noוְלֹא־ve.lo'-H3808placeיָדַ֛יִםya.Da.yimH3027to fleeלָנ֖וּסla.NusH5127thisהֵ֣נָּהHe.nahH2008wayוָהֵ֑נָּהva.He.nahH2008or that, for the peopleוְהָעָם֙ve.ha.'AmH5971who had been fleeingהַנָּ֣סha.NasH5127to the wildernessהַמִּדְבָּ֔רha.mid.BarH4057turnedנֶהְפַּ֖ךְneh.PakhH2015againstאֶל־'el-H413the pursuersהָרוֹדֵֽף׃ha.ro.DefH7291.

21When Joshuaוִיהוֹשֻׁ֨עַvi.ho.Shu.a'H3091and allוְכָֽל־ve.kholH3605Israelיִשְׂרָאֵ֜לYis.ra.'ElH3478sawרָא֗וּra.'UH7200that the men inambushהָֽאֹרֵב֙ha.'o.RevH693had capturedלָכַ֤דla.KhadH3920the cityהָעִ֔ירha.'IrH5892and that the smokeעֲשַׁ֣ן'a.ShanH6227of the cityהָעִ֑ירha.'IrH5892ascendedעָלָ֖ה'a.LahH5927,they turnedH7725backוַיָּשֻׁ֕בוּvai.ya.Shu.vuH7725andkilledוַיַּכּ֖וּvai.ya.KuH5221the menH376of Aiהָעָֽי׃ha.'AiH5857.

22The othersוְאֵ֨לֶּהve.'E.lehH428cameH3318outH3318from the cityהָעִיר֙ha.'IrH5892to confrontלִקְרָאתָ֔םlik.ra.TamH7122them, so that they were trappedin the midstבַּתָּ֔וֶךְba.Ta.vekhH8432of Israelלְיִשְׂרָאֵל֙le.Yis.ra.'ElH3478,someאֵ֥לֶּה'E.lehH428on thisH2088sideH2088and someוְאֵ֣לֶּהve.'E.lehH428on that sideH2088; and theykilledוַיַּכּ֣וּvai.ya.KuH5221them untilעַד־'ad-H5704there was not oneleftהִשְׁאִֽיר־hish.'ir-H7604whoH8300escapedH8300or survivedוּפָלִֽיט׃u.fa.LitH6412.

23But they capturedתָּ֣פְשׂוּTa.fe.suH8610the kingמֶ֥לֶךְMe.lekhH4428of Aiהָעַ֖יha.'AiH5857aliveחָ֑יChaiH2416and broughtוַיַּקְרִ֥בוּvai.yak.Ri.vuH7126him to Joshuaיְהוֹשֻֽׁעַ׃ye.ho.Shu.a'H3091.
