1Now the Lordיְהוָ֤הYah.wehH3068saidוַיֹּ֨אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559to Joshuaיְהוֹשֻׁ֙עַ֙ye.ho.Shu.a'H3091, “Do not fearתִּירָ֣אti.Ra'H3372or be dismayedתֵּחָ֔תte.ChatH2865.Takeקַ֣חkachH3947allכָּל־kol-H3605the peopleעַ֣ם'amH5971of warהַמִּלְחָמָ֔הha.mil.cha.MahH4421with you. Ariseוְק֖וּםve.KumH6965,goעֲלֵ֣ה'a.LehH5927upH5927to Aiהָעָ֑יha.'AiH5857;seeרְאֵ֣ה׀re.'EhH7200,I have handedבְיָדְךָ֗ve.ya.de.KhaH5414H3027overH5414to you the kingמֶ֤לֶךְMe.lekhH4428of Aiהָעַי֙ha.'AiH5857,his peopleעַמּ֔וֹa.MoH5971,his cityעִיר֖וֹi.RoH5892,and his landאַרְצֽוֹ׃'ar.TzoH776.
2You shall doוְעָשִׂ֨יתָve.'a.Si.taH6213to Aiלָעַ֜יla.'AiH5857and its kingוּלְמַלְכָּ֗הּu.le.mal.KahH4428justH3512asH3512you didעָשִׂ֤יתָ'a.Si.taH6213to Jerichoלִֽירִיחוֹ֙li.ri.ChoH3405and its kingוּלְמַלְכָּ֔הּu.le.mal.KahH4428; you shalltakeH962onlyH7534its spoilsשְׁלָלָ֥הּshe.la.LahH7998and its cattleוּבְהֶמְתָּ֖הּu.ve.hem.TahH929as plunderתָּבֹ֣זּוּta.Vo.zuH962for yourselves.Setשִׂים־sim-H7760an ambushאֹרֵ֛ב'o.RevH693for the cityלָעִ֖ירla.'IrH5892behindמֵאַחֲרֶֽיהָ׃me.'a.cha.Rei.haH4480H310it.”
3So Joshuaיְהוֹשֻׁ֛עַye.ho.Shu.a'H3091roseH6965upH6965with allוְכָל־ve.kholH3605the peopleעַ֥ם'amH5971of warהַמִּלְחָמָ֖הha.mil.cha.MahH4421to goלַעֲל֣וֹתla.'a.LotH5927upH5927to Aiהָעָ֑יha.'AiH5857;and Joshuaיְ֠הוֹשֻׁעַYe.ho.shu.a'H3091choseוַיִּבְחַ֣רvai.yiv.CharH977thirtyשְׁלֹשִׁ֨יםshe.lo.ShimH7970thousandאֶ֤לֶף'E.lefH505menאִישׁ֙'ishH376,valiantהַחַ֔יִלha.Cha.yilH2428warriorsגִּבּוֹרֵ֣יgi.bo.ReiH1368,and sentH7971them outH7971at nightלָֽיְלָה׃La.ye.lahH3915.
4He commandedוַיְצַ֨וvay.TzavH6680them, sayingלֵאמֹ֗רle.MorH559, “Seeרְ֠אוּRe.'uH7200, you aregoing to ambushאֹרְבִ֤ים'o.re.VimH693the cityH5892from behindמֵאַחֲרֵ֣יme.'a.cha.ReiH310it. Do not goH7368veryמְאֹ֑דme.'OdH3966farתַּרְחִ֥יקוּtar.Chi.kuH7368from the cityH5892,but allכֻּלְּכֶ֖םku.le.KhemH3605of you be readyנְכֹנִֽים׃ne.kho.NimH3559.
5Then I and allוְכָל־ve.kholH3605the peopleהָעָם֙ha.'AmH5971whoH834are with me will approachנִקְרַ֖בnik.RavH7126the cityהָעִ֑ירha.'IrH5892.And whenכִּֽי־ki-H3588they comeיֵצְא֤וּye.tze.'UH3318outH3318to meetלִקְרָאתֵ֙נוּ֙lik.ra.Te.nuH7122us as they didthe firstבָּרִֽאשֹׁנָ֔הba.ri.sho.NahH7223time,we will fleeוְנַ֖סְנוּve.Nas.nuH5127beforeלִפְנֵיהֶֽם׃lif.nei.HemH6440them.
6They will comeוְיָצְא֣וּve.ya.tze.'UH3318outH3318afterאַחֲרֵ֗ינוּ'a.cha.Rei.nuH310us untilעַ֣ד'adH5704we have luredH5423them awayH5423from the cityהָעִ֔ירha.'IrH5892,for they will sayיֹֽאמְר֔וּyo.me.RuH559, ‘Theyare fleeingנָסִ֣יםna.SimH5127beforeלְפָנֵ֔ינוּle.fa.Nei.nuH6440us justH3512asH3512they didthe firstבָּרִֽאשֹׁנָ֑הba.ri.sho.NahH7223timeH7223.’So we will fleeוְנַ֖סְנוּve.Nas.nuH5127beforeלִפְנֵיהֶֽם׃lif.nei.HemH6440them.
7Then you shall riseתָּקֻ֙מוּ֙ta.Ku.muH6965from yourambushמֵהָ֣אוֹרֵ֔בme.Ha.'o.RevH693and takeוְהוֹרַשְׁתֶּ֖םve.ho.rash.TemH3423possessionH3423of the cityהָעִ֑ירha.'IrH5892,for the Lordיְהוָ֥הYah.wehH3068your Godאֱלֹֽהֵיכֶ֖ם'e.lo.hei.KhemH430will handבְּיֶדְכֶֽם׃be.yed.KhemH3027H5414it overH5414to you.
8Then it will be when you have seizedכְּתָפְשְׂכֶ֣םke.ta.fe.se.KhemH8610the cityהָעִ֗ירha.'IrH5892,that you shall setתַּצִּ֤יתוּta.Tzi.tuH3341the cityהָעִיר֙ha.'IrH5892on fireבָּאֵ֔שׁba.'EshH784.You shall doתַּעֲשׂ֑וּta.'a.SuH6213itin accordance with the wordכִּדְבַ֥רkid.VarH1697of the Lordיְהוָ֖הYah.wehH3068.Seeרְא֖וּre.'UH7200,I have commandedצִוִּ֥יתִיtzi.Vi.tiH6680you.”
9So Joshuaיְהוֹשֻׁ֗עַye.ho.Shu.a'H3091sentH7971them awayH7971,and they wentוַיֵּֽלְכוּ֙vai.ye.le.KhuH1980to the place ofambushהַמַּאְרָ֔בha.ma'.RavH3993and remainedוַיֵּשְׁב֗וּvai.ye.she.VuH3427betweenH996BethelH1008and Aiהָעַ֖יha.'AiH5857,on the westמִיָּ֣םmi.YamH3220sideH3220of Aiלָעָ֑יla.'AiH5857;but Joshuaיְהוֹשֻׁ֛עַye.ho.Shu.a'H3091spentוַיָּ֧לֶןvai.Ya.lenH3885that nightבַּלַּ֥יְלָהba.Lay.lahH3915amongבְּת֥וֹךְbe.TokhH8432the peopleהָעָֽם׃ha.'AmH5971.
10Now Joshuaיְהוֹשֻׁ֙עַ֙ye.ho.Shu.a'H3091gotH7925upH7925earlyוַיַּשְׁכֵּ֤םvai.yash.KemH7925in the morningבַּבֹּ֔קֶרba.Bo.kerH1242and musteredוַיִּפְקֹ֖דvai.yif.KodH6485the peopleהָעָ֑םha.'AmH5971,and he wentH5927upH5927with the eldersוְזִקְנֵ֧יve.zik.NeiH2205of Israelיִשְׂרָאֵ֛לYis.ra.'ElH3478beforeלִפְנֵ֥יlif.NeiH6440the peopleהָעָ֖םha.'AmH5971to Aiהָעָֽי׃ha.'AiH5857.
11Then allוְכָל־ve.kholH3605the peopleהָעָ֨םha.'AmH5971of warהַמִּלְחָמָ֜הha.mil.cha.MahH4421whoאֲשֶׁ֣ר'a.SherH834werewith him wentH5927upH5927and approachedוַֽיִּגְּשׁ֔וּvai.yi.ge.ShuH5066,and arrivedוַיָּבֹ֖אוּvai.ya.Vo.'uH935in frontנֶ֣גֶדNe.gedH5048of the cityהָעִ֑ירha.'IrH5892;and they campedוַֽיַּחֲנוּ֙vai.ya.cha.NuH2583on the northמִצְּפ֣וֹןmi.tze.FonH6828sideH6828of Aiלָעַ֔יla.'AiH5857. And there wasa valleyוְהַגַּ֖יve.ha.GaiH1516betweenH996him and Aiהָעָֽי׃ha.'AiH5857.
12Then he tookוַיִּקַּ֕חvai.yi.KachH3947about fiveכַּחֲמֵ֥שֶׁתka.cha.Me.shetH2568thousandאֲלָפִ֖ים'a.la.FimH505menאִ֑ישׁ'IshH376and setוַיָּ֨שֶׂםvai.Ya.semH7760them inH693ambushאֹרֵ֗ב'o.RevH693betweenH996BethelH1008and Aiהָעַ֖יha.'AiH5857,on the westמִיָּ֥םmi.YamH3220sideH3220of thecityלָעִֽיר׃la.'IrH5892.
13So they stationedוַיָּשִׂ֨ימוּvai.ya.Si.muH7760the peopleהָעָ֜םha.'AmH5971,allכָּל־kol-H3605the armyהַֽמַּחֲנֶ֗הha.ma.cha.NehH4264that was on the northH6828sideH6828of the cityלָעִ֔ירla.'IrH5892,and its rearH6119guardH6119on the westמִיָּ֣םmi.YamH3220sideH3220of the cityלָעִ֑ירla.'IrH5892,and Joshuaיְהוֹשֻׁ֛עַye.ho.Shu.a'H3091spentוַיֵּ֧לֶךְvai.Ye.lekhH1980that nightבַּלַּ֥יְלָהba.Lay.lahH3915in the midstבְּת֥וֹךְbe.TokhH8432of the valleyהָעֵֽמֶק׃ha.'E.mekH6010.
14And it cameH1961aboutH1961,when the kingמֶֽלֶךְ־Me.lekh-H4428of Aiהָעַ֗יha.'AiH5857sawכִּרְא֣וֹתkir.'otH7200them,that the menH376of the cityהָעִ֣ירha.'IrH5892hurriedוַֽיְמַהֲר֡וּvay.ma.ha.RuH4116and gotH7925upH7925earlyוַיַּשְׁכִּ֡ימוּvai.yash.Ki.muH7925,and wentH3318outH3318to meetלִקְרַֽאת־lik.rat-H7122Israelיִ֠שְׂרָאֵלYis.ra.'elH3478in battleלַֽמִּלְחָמָ֞הla.mil.cha.MahH4421,he and allוְכָל־ve.kholH3605his peopleעַמּ֛וֹa.MoH5971at the appointedלַמּוֹעֵ֖דla.mo.'EdH4150placeH4150beforeלִפְנֵ֣יlif.NeiH6440the desertH6160plainH6160.But he did not knowיָדַ֔עya.Da'H3045that there wasan ambushאֹרֵ֥ב'o.RevH693against him behindמֵאַחֲרֵ֥יme.'a.cha.ReiH4480H310the cityהָעִֽיר׃ha.'IrH5892.
16And allכָּל־kol-H3605the peopleהָעָם֙ha.'AmH5971whoאֲשֶׁ֣ר'a.SherH834were in the cityהָעִֽיר׃ha.'IrH5892were calledH2199togetherוַיִּזָּעֲק֗וּvai.yi.za.'a.KuH2199to pursueלִרְדֹּ֖ףlir.DofH7291them, and they pursuedוַֽיִּרְדְּפוּ֙vai.yir.de.FuH7291Joshuaיְהוֹשֻׁ֔עַye.ho.Shu.a'H3091andwere luredH5423awayH5423from the cityH5892.
17So not a manאִ֗ישׁ'IshH376was leftנִשְׁאַ֣רnish.'ArH7604in Aiבָּעַי֙ba.'AiH5857or BethelH1008,but they had all goneH3318outH3318afterH310Israelיִשְׂרָאֵ֑לYis.ra.'ElH3478,and they leftוַיַּעַזְב֤וּvai.ya.'az.VuH5800the cityהָעִיר֙ha.'IrH5892unguardedפְּתוּחָ֔הpe.tu.ChahH6605and pursuedוַֽיִּרְדְּפ֖וּvai.yir.de.FuH7291Israelיִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ פYis.ra.'ElH3478.
18Then the Lordיְהוָ֜הYah.wehH3068saidוַיֹּ֨אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559to Joshuaיְהוֹשֻׁ֗עַye.ho.Shu.a'H3091, “ReachH5186outH5186with the swordבַּכִּיד֤וֹןba.ki.DonH3591that is in your handבְּיָֽדְךָ֙be.ya.de.KhaH3027towardH413Aiהָעַ֔יha.'AiH5857,for I will handבְיָדְךָ֖ve.ya.de.KhaH5414H3027it overH5414to you.” So Joshuaיְהוֹשֻׁ֛עַye.ho.Shu.a'H3091reachedH5186outH5186with the swordבַּכִּיד֥וֹןba.ki.DonH3591that was in his handבְּיָד֖וֹbe.ya.DoH3027towardH413the cityהָעִֽיר׃ha.'IrH5892.
19Then the men inambushוְהָאוֹרֵ֡בve.ha.'o.RevH693roseקָם֩kamH6965quicklyמְהֵרָ֨הme.he.RahH4120from their placeמִמְּקוֹמ֤וֹmi.me.ko.MoH4725,and when he had reachedH5186outH5186with his handיָד֔וֹya.DoH3027,they ranוַיָּר֙וּצוּ֙vai.ya.Ru.tzuH7323and enteredוַיָּבֹ֥אוּvai.ya.Vo.'uH935the cityהָעִ֖ירha.'IrH5892and capturedוַֽיִּלְכְּד֑וּהָvai.yil.ke.Du.haH3920it, and they quicklyוַֽיְמַהֲר֔וּvay.ma.ha.RuH4116setוַיַּצִּ֥יתוּvai.ya.Tzi.tuH3341the cityהָעִ֖ירha.'IrH5892on fireבָּאֵֽשׁ׃ba.'EshH784.
20When the menH376of Aiהָעַ֨יha.'AiH5857turnedוַיִּפְנ֣וּvai.yif.NuH6437backאַחֲרֵיהֶ֜ם'a.cha.rei.HemH310and lookedוַיִּרְא֗וּvai.yir.'UH7200,beholdוְהִנֵּ֨הve.hi.NehH2009,the smokeעֲשַׁ֤ן'a.ShanH6227of the cityהָעִיר֙ha.'IrH5892ascendedעָלָ֜ה'a.LahH5927to the skyהַשָּׁמַ֔יְמָהha.sha.May.mahH8064,and they hadהָיָ֨הha.YahH1961noוְלֹא־ve.lo'-H3808placeיָדַ֛יִםya.Da.yimH3027to fleeלָנ֖וּסla.NusH5127thisהֵ֣נָּהHe.nahH2008wayוָהֵ֑נָּהva.He.nahH2008or that, for the peopleוְהָעָם֙ve.ha.'AmH5971who had been fleeingהַנָּ֣סha.NasH5127to the wildernessהַמִּדְבָּ֔רha.mid.BarH4057turnedנֶהְפַּ֖ךְneh.PakhH2015againstאֶל־'el-H413the pursuersהָרוֹדֵֽף׃ha.ro.DefH7291.
21When Joshuaוִיהוֹשֻׁ֨עַvi.ho.Shu.a'H3091and allוְכָֽל־ve.kholH3605Israelיִשְׂרָאֵ֜לYis.ra.'ElH3478sawרָא֗וּra.'UH7200that the men inambushהָֽאֹרֵב֙ha.'o.RevH693had capturedלָכַ֤דla.KhadH3920the cityהָעִ֔ירha.'IrH5892and that the smokeעֲשַׁ֣ן'a.ShanH6227of the cityהָעִ֑ירha.'IrH5892ascendedעָלָ֖ה'a.LahH5927,they turnedH7725backוַיָּשֻׁ֕בוּvai.ya.Shu.vuH7725andkilledוַיַּכּ֖וּvai.ya.KuH5221the menH376of Aiהָעָֽי׃ha.'AiH5857.
22The othersוְאֵ֨לֶּהve.'E.lehH428cameH3318outH3318from the cityהָעִיר֙ha.'IrH5892to confrontלִקְרָאתָ֔םlik.ra.TamH7122them, so that they were trappedin the midstבַּתָּ֔וֶךְba.Ta.vekhH8432of Israelלְיִשְׂרָאֵל֙le.Yis.ra.'ElH3478,someאֵ֥לֶּה'E.lehH428on thisH2088sideH2088and someוְאֵ֣לֶּהve.'E.lehH428on that sideH2088; and theykilledוַיַּכּ֣וּvai.ya.KuH5221them untilעַד־'ad-H5704there was not oneleftהִשְׁאִֽיר־hish.'ir-H7604whoH8300escapedH8300or survivedוּפָלִֽיט׃u.fa.LitH6412.
24Now when Israelיִשְׂרָאֵ֡לYis.ra.'ElH3478had finishedכְּכַלּ֣וֹתke.kha.LotH3615killingלַהֲרֹג֩la.ha.RogH2026allכָּל־kol-H3605the inhabitantsיֹשְׁבֵ֨יyo.she.VeiH3427of Aiהָעַ֜יha.'AiH5857in the fieldבַּשָּׂדֶ֗הba.sa.DehH7704in the wildernessבַּמִּדְבָּר֙ba.mid.BarH4057whereאֲשֶׁ֣ר'a.SherH834they pursuedרְדָפ֣וּםre.da.FumH7291them, and allכֻלָּ֛םkhu.LamH3605of them had fallenוַֽיִּפְּל֥וּvai.yi.pe.LuH5307by the edgeלְפִי־le.fi-H6310of the swordחֶ֖רֶבChe.revH2719untilעַד־'ad-H5704they were destroyedתֻּמָּ֑םtu.MamH8552,then allכָל־khol-H3605Israelיִשְׂרָאֵל֙Yis.ra.'ElH3478returnedוַיָּשֻׁ֤בוּvai.ya.Shu.vuH7725to Aiהָעַ֔יha.'AiH5857and struckוַיַּכּ֥וּvai.ya.KuH5221it with the edgeלְפִי־le.fi-H6310of the swordחָֽרֶב׃Cha.revH2719.
26For Joshuaוִיהוֹשֻׁ֙עַ֙vi.ho.Shu.a'H3091did not withdrawהֵשִׁ֣יבhe.ShivH7725his handיָד֔וֹya.DoH3027with whichH834he reachedH5186outH5186with the swordבַּכִּיד֑וֹןba.ki.DonH3591untilעַ֚ד'adH5704he hadutterlyH2763destroyedהֶחֱרִ֔יםhe.che.RimH2763allכָּל־kol-H3605the inhabitantsיֹשְׁבֵ֥יyo.she.VeiH3427of Aiהָעָֽי׃ha.'AiH5857.
27Israelיִשְׂרָאֵ֑לYis.ra.'ElH3478tookH962onlyH7534the cattleהַבְּהֵמָ֗הha.be.he.MahH929and the spoilsוּשְׁלַל֙u.she.LalH7998of that cityהָעִ֣ירha.'IrH5892as plunderבָּזְז֥וּba.ze.ZuH962for themselves, in accordance with the wordכִּדְבַ֣רkid.VarH1697of the Lordיְהוָ֔הYah.wehH3068whichאֲשֶׁ֥ר'a.SherH834He had commandedצִוָּ֖הtzi.VahH6680Joshuaיְהוֹשֻֽׁעַ׃ye.ho.Shu.a'H3091.
29Andhe hangedתָּלָ֥הta.LahH8518the kingמֶ֧לֶךְMe.lekhH4428of Aiהָעַ֛יha.'AiH5857ona treeהָעֵ֖ץha.'EtzH6086untilH5704eveningהָעָ֑רֶבha.'A.revH6153;but at sunsetוּכְב֣וֹא הַשֶּׁמֶשׁ֩u.khe.Vo' ha.she.MeshH8121H935Joshuaיְהוֹשֻׁ֜עַye.ho.Shu.a'H3091gaveH6680the commandצִוָּ֨הtzi.VahH6680and they tookH3381his bodyנִבְלָת֣וֹniv.la.ToH5038downוַיֹּרִ֧ידוּvai.yo.Ri.duH3381fromthe treeהָעֵ֗ץha.'EtzH6086and threwוַיַּשְׁלִ֤יכוּvai.yash.Li.khuH7993it at the entranceפֶּ֙תַח֙pe.tachH6607of the cityהָעִ֔ירha.'IrH5892gateשַׁ֣עַרSha.'arH8179,and erectedוַיָּקִ֤ימוּvai.ya.Ki.muH6965overH5921it a largeגָּד֔וֹלga.DolH1419heapגַּל־gal-H1530of stonesאֲבָנִ֣ים'a.va.NimH68that standsto thisהַזֶּֽה׃ פha.ZehH2088dayהַיּ֥וֹםhai.YomH3117.

32And hewroteוַיִּכְתָּב־vai.yikh.tov-H3789thereשָׁ֖םshamH8033on the stonesהָאֲבָנִ֑יםha.'a.va.NimH68a copyמִשְׁנֵה֙mish.NehH4932of the Lawתּוֹרַ֣תto.RatH8451of Mosesמֹשֶׁ֔הmo.ShehH4872,whichאֲשֶׁ֣ר'a.SherH834he had writtenכָּתַ֔בka.TavH3789,in the presenceלִפְנֵ֖יlif.NeiH6440of the sonsבְּנֵ֥יbe.NeiH1121of Israelיִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃Yis.ra.'ElH3478.
